      American cars cost half of what European cars cost. In America an ordinary person can have a 5 liter V8. In Europe you are talking 100,000 dollars plus to own such a car. That is the difference.

    • @LeshVAuto
      @LeshVAuto 9 років тому +1

      +Flávio Coimbra best part is that you don't have to pay for service (oil change, tire rotation, etc) for 4 year/ 50k miles.

      Cost to fill the gas tank on a CTS-V in Germany €79.86 - $87.73
      Cost to fill the gas tank on a CTS-v in Michigan €29.85 - $32.80
      I think european gas tax has a lot to do with the fact that average Americans can afford bigger engines. As I write this comment (July 24th 2016) gas here in Michigan is $2.05 per gallon while the price of gas in Frankfurt is about $5.57 per gallon.

      "Not being an American car fan" was so 15 years ago bro. Since then the 2006 Z06 held the record for fastest Nurburgring lap then 2008 ACR then 2009 ZR1 held the record while the 2009 CTS-V was the fastest sedan in the world. Then the 2016 ACR was as fast as the Porsche 918, Laferrari and P1.
      "Not an American car fan" because you drove a 1999 Buick?
      Get in this century, bro.

    GM's 8 speed keeps getting slack because in manual mode it is not as fast in shift speed as reviewers would like,. But here is the thing. Its perfectly fine in automatic mode were you have the car setup in track mode. The computer is so intuitive and always has the car in its perfect gear. You simply can not be involved in the automatic 8 SPEED. If you want driver involvement then buy the manual transmission.

      That's what I was thinking too, if you buy the 8 speed AUTO is because you want an AUTO, If you are going to complain that your paddles aren't responsive than why didn't you get a Manual?.. Right?.

    The ATS has the basics done right. Like Matt stated Cadillac just need to address the small details to make a top class car. And given GM's focus on Cadillac these past few years I say they are doing a good job so far.

    I have had the ats-v for about a month now and I love the car. Very fast. Handles amazing and the 8 speed auto is not so bad when you learn how to use it. When you are in manual mode you need to learn the correct times to downshift and it will respond very fast. The upshifts are fast when you are on the gas and hits hard. Very solid car and the acceleration is nasty. Very nice powerband. This has a big turbo type is high rpm pull that you don't get from other cars. Builds power the whole way up the rpm range. Tons of torque

    Cadillac completed their mission with the ATS. They created a car that can compete neck and neck with the Germans at a lower price. None of them handle like the ATS. Like people have said the transmission is smart all by itself..if you want to drive it fast leave it in auto. Its only the first generation and will only get better.

    +thesmokingtire I was hoping for your standard out (shift with paddles) and back (let the auto shift) comparison. I've noticed that a lot of others have stated the trans downshifts better in auto than with the paddles. I don't know it you were pressed for time or if you noticed if it wasn't that different. I realize its stupid to offer paddles if they're basically useless just because the other guy offers paddle because if theirs works and your's doesn't you just look bad. I was also hoping for better cooling with more frontal area for flow through the radiator. Do you think it was undersized for fitment and cost because they gambled on it not being driven that hard by most?

    • @wobblysauce

      Built to a price for where most people are, if you live some where Hot you can change it up.

    • @stigmsr1
      @stigmsr1 9 років тому

      +wobbly sauce I really hope that not the case though you're probably right. A stock car should be able to be driven at speed without severely cutting power. If it were modified and can't keep up with the heat then upgrading cooling would be understandable. If Cadi wants to do this and knows they can't handle the heat maybe do an over-boost function for short busts of extra power then back down to help keep the temps in check. Just my opinion but when your car gets known for going into limp mode on every test you dropped the ball somewhere.

    • @TheSmokingTire
      @TheSmokingTire  9 років тому +6

      It's a little better in auto, yeah, but I still would rather shift myself most of the time. I'm sure there are ways to keep that engine cooler but you probably have to get a real expensive series of coolers that GM didn't want to buy.

    • @stigmsr1
      @stigmsr1 9 років тому +2

      TheSmokingTire Sounds like they should have tried to work out a bulk deal for more efficient ones that could work in the Vette too since it sounds like it needs them as well. Work it into the performance package price even though I truly think if it has the V or Z06 badge it should come standard. Thanks for your input.

    • @vernonprice5986
      @vernonprice5986 9 років тому +1

      +Barry Blackstone Yeah I feel like Matt is unreasonably harsh about CUE, I mean I'm not saying it's the best system at all, but it is really not that hard to use. There are also tricks I think a lot of people aren't aware of, like to change the volume quickly you can swipe left or right on the volume slider in the center console. The new Cadillacs are also getting a 4X bump in processing power which fixes the lag, which I think was one of the worst parts of CUE.
      There are also steering wheel controls for phone, voice commands, volume, track up/down, DIC settings etc which means you don't actually have to use the CUE interface itself for most of the things you want to do while you're actually driving. So I just can't see the justification for the hate it gets.

    That rotational inertia in the coupling portion of the auto transmission, that is equivalent to the flywheel, is in the torque converter. The flexplate, which some may try to say is the equivalent of the flywheel weighs less than 5 pounds on most cars. Obviously, a 5 lb flywheel in a manual car would be stupid light. So lighter weight torque converter? Then again maybe the problem isn't the coupling portion. Maybe it's in the auto tranny itself. They are called slush boxes for a reason.

And I'm guessing you've never seen one in person, there's nothing "rental" about it. Do your rentals normally have Recaros?

    i was in the atsv and ctsv at laguna seca during a 45min-1 hour session driven by pro drivers for caddy customers.. cars held up very well , air temps were 80-85 degrees ... the ctsv was pretty insane around laguna and atsv very close in ride, speed and handling... also got to drive both vehicles and both very nice... ctsv should come in stick... i actually like the exhaust note in the atsv, sounds good up high in the rev range, i also like the power delivery... after many hot laps you can tell the cts has better brakes.. problem with the infotainment system(i hate that word infotainment btw) is when you touch the buttons you dont know that you actually did anything , the buttons are like fixed plastic and you cant feel them working , they dont click like a button should lol... you just press the thing and wonder if its actually a button...
    i dont know of any force induced engine that stays cool on the track without modification.. how hot was it in texas when the atsv was getting hot? i assume it was on the street and not the track based on what matt was saying

    • @vernonprice5986
      @vernonprice5986 9 років тому

      +RingerRacing The CUE system uses a haptic engine, so you do actually know when you've done something because the surface you're touching vibrates under your finger. Also the ATS-V that got hot was due to a preproduction part that failed, that part never made it into production, and no othre ATS-Vs or CTS-Vs have had any overheating issues.

    ATS and M3/M4 are both 4,64m long. Would you agree that your feeling of the size of a car comes more from the eagerness to turn in, the agility and perhaps the noise insulation of the cabin?

      The width. If the M4 isn't significantly wider than the ATS, it certainly feels it.

      Ah I looked it up, the ATS-V Coupe is around 3cm and the Sedan is around 7cm narrower than the BMW's. Appreciate your quick answer. Lets hope together that the M2 comes with more power than the X4 M40i which it could share the engine with.

      +ViB33 Car and Driver mag shows a width of a rounded 74 inches for the M4 to just over 71 inches for the ATS coupe. The interior space is noticeably smaller more than the 3" of width would seem though too.

      @Magic_Vince 9 років тому

      Sedan is 71.5 and Coupe is 72.5. Got that from cadillac.de . So the numbers shouldn't keep anyone from buying one of these cars. But its the feel that seals the deal.

    Good review. I've had mine for about 2 months now. The gearbox is peculiar as sometimes it wants to behave and have that snappiness of a DCT and other times, it's just downright slow. Hopefully this can all be resolved in tuning via software updates. In terms of overheating, I have to agree as well. According to my PDR, Water Temp: 221(max), Oil Temp: 266 (max), Trans Temp: 243(max). This was after a 1:59.7 running at Buttonwillow CW13. Temps that day were in the high 60's/low 70's. Completely stock. (Footage on my page) Hopefully, some better oil will drop it down a touch in the coming summer months.

    • @SuperNorm02
      @SuperNorm02 9 років тому +1

      +TheSmokingTire. Ok, so in reality you have no factual data to suggest that this is not a good car to buy if you live somewhere that is hot? By the way, I was with Cadillac last month (August 2015) at COTA for a track event. It was 107* outside with track temps above 130*s. Not a single ATS-V or CTS-V over heated and the cars ran on the track from 9am-4pm. If you're going to make an outrageous claim like the one you did, perhaps you should use some data instead of opinions to back it up.

    GM has stated many times the 8 speeds shifts faster than a DCT, The time it spends not in a gear is less, that's totally believable if understand how a planetary transmission shifts vs a cog transmission. (the term automatic, is outdated both types could be either auto or manual) the thing that sucks is the delay from paddle tap to initiation of the shift. They should be able to eliminate that delay, they need to asap. Looks are subjective I think it looks better than m3/4 and way better than a c63. I agree no V6 sounds great, they are all blah.

    • @BBDSmint
      @BBDSmint 9 років тому +1

      if it was as simple as just eliminating paddle delay, don't you think they would have done that already? as it stands, this gearbox gets eaten alive by PDK and S-tronic

      +BBDSmint like somebody stated in another comment, don't buy the auto if you want driver involvement. Matt can complain all he wants about the downshifts because he's trying to involve himself instead of letting the automatic transmission do what it was made to do, be an automatic....
