A reply 9 years later :) Although low compression diesel does produce less emissions, Mazda spent most of the year between 2012 and 2017 working hard on ensuring that their diesel actually did meet the very strict EPA emission requirements. What we weren't to know was that Mazda's honesty, although it paid of (for a very short lifespan in the US and also with degraded specs), paralleled with VW dishonesty in emissions (other brands like VW use higher compression, which is naturally higher in emissions). The German and Japanese governments audited all brands after the VW diesel emissions scandal. The german government refused to publish results, although it's well known that any brand using high compression diesel was also cheating emissions (i.e. all of them). Japan also audits but did publish results. In Japan, the only brand that was seen to be matching emissions was Mazda. To be fair though, it's also the only one to utilise the lower emission low compression diesel.

hah, that's a far cry from my '87 diesel. sounds like a locomotive. :D
