I've never cooked dahl like this before. I like the idea of adding tinned tomatoes to the lentils to be cooked together. Also the simplicity of only being flavoured by cumin seeds, turmeric and chillis with additional lime juice. Quick, easy and tasty. Thank you Nisha.
I just wanna say thanks to you, I had no idea how I may cook for dal,but after watching your this video. I proudly can say I have cooked some awesome for myself , cause being living abroad out of family it's hard to knows the method for smile and healthy food to cook.
Im with you-Dahl is the only place I use ghee in the kitchen and such a small amount dissipated into a big pan of wholesomeness surely cannot be bad! good luck with it
I kid yo not, I have attempted dahl over the past 10 years and the end result is never reliable so I always avoided making it. But your method worked like a charm!! Was soooo easy and tasted and looked really authentic. Cheers xx
Thank you, I have just bought an electric roti maker as my hands are sore, so tonight I am going to try your daal recipe to go with my roti . I am looking forward to more easy ideas for one person , I am 67 and looking for different things to eat now.
Hi Nisha, I just discovered your channel. I made this tonight after watching the video. I didn't have ghee so I clarified my own butter. This is the best dahl I have ever tasted!!! Thank-you so much for putting this out the tube. looking forward to watching your other videos.
i made the best dal today because of this i added some red chilli powder which gave the dal a little kick i also added chopped onions with black Peblackand choped lemons the dal turned out sooo amazing. thanks for teaching the bass of the dall
Thank you! I have been looking for a really basic foundation dahl dish but all the recipes I found have all the spice flavourings already thrown in. Now I know how to do the basics, I can add my own combinations of flavourings. Thank you.
Thanks for making this so easy to try, I've just cooked it with everything you suggested - lemon squeeze, coriander & about to eat it with a fresh salad :)
Done your recipe tonight, Easy very pleasant, Thankyou so much for sharing you Knowledge,,, I've only started cooking 3 months and it's became a passion, Especially Indian,Chinese and Thai, I'm not great but I try,
This is one of my favourite Dahls! 😊 very healthy, nutritious, tasty and quick to make. I never thought of adding lemon zest with the fresh corriander. Will definitely have to try 🙏 thank you
So useful to have this basic recipe which you can than add to. A lot of Dahl recipes seem to add coconut milk which I love but I have never use in Dahl. I prefer to use the milk in another veggie curry which I serve alongside the Dahl.
Thanks for this - I just cooked to that method and had a delicious home made dahl in 30 mins. Was always wary of dahl, as cooks would tell me how easy it ease to mess up. This seems bullet proof and the basis of much experimentation.
My mother-in-law is Bangladeshi and she told me never to use Olive Oil as it messes with the spices so I'm glad that you say its okay as its much healthier although I do love the smell of Ghee as its spitting !!!! I was suprised you didn't use any onions or garlic so I'm going to try your recipe this afternoon as my kids love dal everyday !!!!
Excellent tutorial. I've made it this way for years. I hold back on the coriander though as I find it a bit overpowering and it can mask the other flavours in dishes.
Ahhh this looks so good. I can almost smell it through the screen haha. I've seen some recipes online replace the ghee with sesame oil to make it vegan but keep the flavor. Would you recommend the sesame oil as a replacement? Or something else?
I use this as my basic dhal (or vary with chana). I've been making this weekly for at least a year and now got my own version - but thanks for getting me started Nisha!
I am a horrible cook. I hate it, I burn everything or the food ends up tasteless. This is one of the few things I made that actually turned out delicious. Thank you! :*
Thank you for posting, Ghee is actually very very healthy, its fatty, but its all good fats not bad. After researching and its mostly all I use now. xxxx
Hi Nisha. Thank you for such a simple recipe. There was one thing however that surprised me. You showed the bowl of dhal. Maybe its wishful thinking but did that dhal come from one cup of raw lentils. Please let me know.
Just had some in a delicious Indian takeout place here. I may just make some, but I don't have cumin seeds in the house. I might have to pick up some groceries to make this! Delicious on rice and or premade naan. You make it look simple as heck!
Thank you for this. Discovered half way through that I didn't have onion at home 😱 But it was still good! Better next time. Used olive oil to make it vegan.
Substitute first cold pressing extra-virgin olive oil from a vetted source, if you're concerned about the health impact of Ghee. No, it won't taste the same, but it's easy to adapt ourselves to it. Dishes are still good when substituting in this manner. California Olive Ranch produces tested, trustworthy first cold pressing extra-virgin olive oil that's also reasonably priced. Otherwise, if it's cheap, it's very likely to be cut with unhealthy oils.
seems i used the wrong lentil, the green one, it s not buttery like the orange lentil at all. back to the start, tomorrow I am cooking the orange lentil...I didnt know the orange lentil can turn so mashy....how much do I need for dahl? thanks
I'll skip the salt and the sugar when making this. I get far too much sugar in all those biscuits I eat. However I had this dish a while back and desperately wanted to know how to make it. For some reason my previous attempts at making Dahl have been a disaster. Here's to hoping I won't repeat those mistakes. Thanks for the video.

Delicious😊
Nice , simple and tasty recipe.Thanks.
Nice vid, easy to follow through. I needed to hear someone tell me what to do rather than just show me without any sound.
Hi,Nisha. I like Dahl very much and your vedio. Thank you for sharing it. Can you give the recipe, including the names of the ingredients?
I was so happy to see you finally put some water as it looked extremely thick great job as your channel grows you might want to invest in a tri pot 👍
I've been making this weekly for at least a year and now got my own version - but thanks for getting me started Nisha!
a pleasure-chana is my favourite-give it a go using this recipe
I made this for dinner tonight and it was delicious! I also love The Doors at the end of the video there haha
I am a horrible cook. I hate it, I burn everything or the food ends up tasteless. This is one of the few things I made that actually turned out delicious. Thank you! :*

Hi, you can buy from Asian supermarket
Thank you for posting, Ghee is actually very very healthy, its fatty, but its all good fats not bad. After researching and its mostly all I use now. xxxx
Wow very lovely
I love how the lentils are actually cooked soft. Nothing worse than buying daal & it's crunchy. Will be making this tomorrow. Thanks, chuck!

Hi Nisha. Thank you for such a simple recipe. There was one thing however that surprised me. You showed the bowl of dhal. Maybe its wishful thinking but did that dhal come from one cup of raw lentils. Please let me know.

Thank you very easy 😋🦋

Just had some in a delicious Indian takeout place here.
I may just make some, but I don't have cumin seeds in the house. I might have to pick up some groceries to make this! Delicious on rice and or premade naan.
You make it look simple as heck!
Hi, this looks great, if I make this and add it to a base curry sauce, will that be like a dhansak. thanks johnny.
no-make your curry sauce, then add the washed lentils, top up with water and boil like that to make the dhansak-good luck
Thank you for this. Discovered half way through that I didn't have onion at home 😱 But it was still good! Better next time. Used olive oil to make it vegan.
You can try coconut oil too 🤤 or with a side of pol sambol
Forget the arteries, more Ghee

HOOK IT TO MY VEINS
Don’t fear the fat. Fear the sugars.
glad to hear it! thanks for reporting back
and if you want to thicken it up???
Ok I think this is my level of cooking
awesome, thnx for making it simple :)
Sugar?
England-where it is lush and green because it rains unceasingly! x
seems i used the wrong lentil, the green one, it s not buttery like the orange lentil at all. back to the start, tomorrow I am cooking the orange lentil...I didnt know the orange lentil can turn so mashy....how much do I need for dahl? thanks
how can we pimp it up :D
I don't want to make my Dahl now, I just want to keep looking at Nisha! xx
Did you guys see her skim off the bubbles during the dhal boiling process to remove the bitter taste?
Why canned tomatoes????
What do you do with the rest of the dhal in the glass dish?
Eat it
I'll skip the salt and the sugar when making this. I get far too much sugar in all those biscuits I eat. However I had this dish a while back and desperately wanted to know how to make it. For some reason my previous attempts at making Dahl have been a disaster. Here's to hoping I won't repeat those mistakes.
Thanks for the video.
You did not use all the dal for that amount of ghee.
I can use vegan butter but I cannot use ghee.
Damn I had to play the video so many times for i was just lost in you :) tried it came out ok i guess
Can someone recommend an alternative for the ghee for people who absolutely won't use it? Coconut oil perhaps?
any oil will do-just not extra virgin
Nisha Katona why not extra virgin olive?
I add lime but then I add lime to everything
Mwahhhh xxxxx
