DIY Sprinter Van Bed Build | Removable 3-Panel Loft Bed Fits a Queen-size Mattress

  • My last Sprinter van bed was a twin. It served me well, but was a bit small for two people. My new van build sports a queen-sized, three-panel loft bed, which can comfortably sleep two people on top and leaves enough room on bottom to house a couple more guest campers. Check out this video to see the build.

    Looks like a very practical upgrade! Love how everything you do to the van still allows for the interior to be quickly converted back to 'hauling' mode.

    Here we go 👍 Steel is the right stuff for van builds. I don't know why so many use wood.

    Good to know there's a place to get powder coating in Tacoma. Those plus nuts look like mollies that are used for dry wall. Appreciate the details.

    Hi Sergei, I was wondering why you used steel rather than aluminium? Really nice design with 45 degree corners and rounded edges as well as the slanted rear panel, well done. I am going to reach out to Jason about the frame. Thanks oh and i have been scouting and eating many wild plants in my area on Vancouver Island BC

    Hi, nice build. One thing, and I think is very overlooked in vanbuilds is safety. Even in a minor front accident the bolts would shear and if someone is sitting in the back, it takes their heads off. I would end the side rails in an L shape or something similar.

    • @BoutenkoFilms
      @BoutenkoFilms  5 років тому

      Thank you for bringing this important safety concern to light. We planned for this in the build. The bed sits lower than the backseat headrests. In the event of a car accident the bed would hopefully hit the headrests instead of peoples heads.

    why use steel, yes its less expensive however yu are going to powder coat it which brings up the cost, also steel is heavy, almost all th builds I have seen have used aluminium, more original cost however much less time involved in putting t together considering th e powder coating? just curious

    Is there a particular reason you didn’t put holes throughout your plywood? I’ve heard if you don’t you’re liable to have moisture buildup that will cause mildew and ruin both the mattress and the wood.
    Love the powder coat idea! Clean looking build.

    • @BoutenkoFilms
      @BoutenkoFilms  5 років тому

      Yes indeed… I’ve read about the moisture issue but figured it’s much easier to drill holes after-the-fact then undrilled the holes. I’m going to see if moisture does in fact build up and if that’s the case, I’ll be adding holes to the top sheets of the bed.

    • @outlaw7x77

      I had a mattress in the back of my Ford for years with zero moisture issues. No holes are needed. I live in Western Washington so...

    • @Kayte...
      @Kayte... 2 роки тому

      I also had no holes and spent 2 weeks sleeping in van in 90* high humidity weather. Granted it was only 2 weeks, but no mold/mildew. I had unpainted plywood with a cotton flannel sheet on plywood under memory foam 6" mattress. Flannel sheet never felt damp either. 2 sweating adults sleeping on mattress. The mattress has a cover in case that made a difference though I don't think it's water proof.

    Why not, cut the angle iron on an angle at the edge. Then you can't hit them.

    • @BoutenkoFilms
      @BoutenkoFilms  5 років тому +1

      Cutting angle iron precisely seemed like a lot more work. Additionally, we felt that steel tubing would be safer in the long run because it would create a wide, flat edge spanning the entire length of the rail. If you hip check the middle section of an angle iron it doesn't feel good. Trust me, I'm clumsy, I know. :-)

    Is there a reason you went with steel instead aluminum? If so, why?

    • @BoutenkoFilms
      @BoutenkoFilms  5 років тому +1

      Originally I wanted to make it out of aluminum because it’s lighter but after doing some research I decided on steel because the tubes could be thinner. Simply put, steel is a lot stronger.

      @@outlaw7x77 I'm guessing 16g. That is what I use/used in both of my builds. All of my stuff is 16g 1x1. It's not as light as aluminum but TBH it's not really that heavy.

    I see the plus nuts you used on the van, but what tool did you use to set them?

    • @BoutenkoFilms
      @BoutenkoFilms  5 років тому

      There are a few ways to install plus nuts. I used a special bolt tool (not sure what it’s called) and a drill. The bolt tool allows you to grab it with a crescent wrench. In the future I’m going to invest in a plus nut instillation tool for about $100. It’s way more precise.

    More & more are using metal fabrication in place of wood. Think that's good?(!)

    • @cogwun
      @cogwun 5 років тому

      Less material can obtain the same strength, so it can save on space and weight. Wood can change shape over time but metal won't really. I'd probably want to involve metal work in a van build if I knew how to work with it and had the tools. But I don't, so I'll be using wood.
