  • We take a look at Canon's updated 24-70mm f/2.8 L USM lens(bit.ly/1ro1BwT). The Mark II(bit.ly/Canon5Dmk2) seems pretty good on paper, but is it worth the extra cash?

    I currently own the 70-200 ii It is an INCREDIBLE lens The build quality is all metal so I would say its better in that part. The optical quality can not be beat period. I have pictures of horses at 15+ yards and when you crop you can pick out flies and gnats in detail buzzing about.

    At that focal length, you are usually doing landscape or portrait photography. If you really stop down below 1/8 second shutter speed, you get a tripod for landscape or a flash gun for portrait. Alternatively increase the ISO to add extra stops of light

    All they had to do was add IS and this would be a dream lens!

    The original 24-70 2.8 I is a great lens. If you have it don't bother upgrading. I did but the new one isn't, looking at the prints, enough sharper to see any improvement. But it is lighter so that's a good point.
    Bottom line is the 24-70 either version is in the bag of just about every pro Canon shooter. Both are outstanding. I just wish that I had kept the original and saved the extra expense. If you don't already have one, go for the II version. Just my .02 worth:)

    Nice comparison - I have the old 24-70L, and it's a great lens. From what I've seen so far from various reviews, there's little incentive for me to upgrade.
    It's 2x the old price, no IS, and although it does have more resolution (to be expected after 10 years), it makes it tough to justify purchasing. The Tamron version is literally 1/2 the price of the new lens and has IS, which makes it a nice alternative.

    The last of the 24-70mm v1's were $1599, $2299-$1599 = $700, not a grand, and it's a huge improvement over the v1. I understand it's expensive if you're just a hobbyist, but if you're a professional it's absolutely worth it. I normally only shoot with primes, but with this I can easily switch focal lengths quickly and not miss a shot, but also not have to worry about compromising the quality by using a zoom over a prime.

    I really don't know why Canon changed the lens from the reverse zoom. it was such a brilliant design. Not only did it give the hood the right coverage for the focal length you were at but it protected the lens much better and fixed it's length when a hood was attached.

    Lensrentals did that comparison already. The Tamron did better than the 24-70 v1 but the 24-70 II creamed both of them. 24mm (center)- EF24-70II - (954), Tamron - (815), 24-70v1 - (730). The kicker is the 24mm TS-E scored a 915 at the center, and that's the sharpest canon 24mm around. At 70mm(center) EF24-70II - (950), Tamron - (735), 24-70v1 - (705). While the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II @70mm scored an 885 and that is arguably the best zoom in the world (maybe not anymore though).

    One of your last comments was something like "This is the new version so it is bound to be more expensive."
    In what other industry do the manufacturers get away with producing new versions - virtually indistinguishable from previous versions - and charge more, let alone DOUBLE!!! Look at computers for example, Apple adds a lot of extra features and charges more or less the same, or maybe a bit more. Lower down the food chain PC manufacturers add lots of features and generally charge less.

  • @samuelluar
    @samuelluar 12 років тому +1

    Speaking from personal experience, the Tamron equivalent is good for about a few months before you start to feel it falling apart. I.E. the zoom will feel rickety, and the bits in focus will begin to fringe uncontrollably in certain lights. I bought a Canon 85mm f/1.8 to replace my Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 as my 5D Mk.II's walk-around lens, and I haven't turned back since.

  • @Axilrod
    @Axilrod 12 років тому

    I shoot with nothing but primes normally, but use this lens for a day yourself instead of listening to a bunch of people trying to marginalize it because they're angry about the price. It's sharper than the 24mm TS-E@24mm and sharper than the 70-200 f/2.8 IS II @ 70mm, if you've used either of those lenses you should be impressed. This thing is stupid sharp, but aside from that the color rendition and bokeh are excellent and the AF is insanely fast.

  • @whitehaze05

    Enjoyable video DRTV.
    Regarding this lens; people are far too concerned about the sharpness of a lens instead of going out and just taking a good photo. Sharpness doesn't equal perfection. The older 24-70 is still a fabulous lens that comes up for sale quite often in the used departments of many photo stores or online sites such as Kijiji or Ebay.

    And I'm sure the majority of people who look at and admire a Ferrari can't afford one either, but what does it matter? At any rate, this is a good video that shows some comparisons to the original lens and some real world tests proving that they really aren't all that different! However, I'm sure those who purchase it will enjoy it and get a lot of good shots out of it.

    My buddy has the 24-70 I have the 50mm 1.4. 24-70 is sharper in day light but at night obviously the 50 was sharper because of the extra stop down to 1.4 while to get the same lighting, the 24 -70 needed increase ISO which causes a lot more noise. The 50 is harder to use and causes camera shake because it takes kind of long to focus, where as the 24-70 focus' faster and gives you better result and reduces camera shake. Bottomline, 24-70 is sharper for general purpose.

      My suggestion is something that has a minimum aperture of 2.8.
      This lens has a perfect range, but you can't go wider than 4.0, which is too limiting I would think.
      Sigma and Tamron have some competitive offerings in your price range, but I have one of those Tamron lenses (24-70 f/2.8) and it's not quite up to L-glass standards. Plus, it has a track record of focusing issues (see reviews on most websites).

    • @smokey267
      @smokey267 7 років тому +1

      if you're not fussed about upgrading to full frame anytime soon then I'd recommend sigma art 50-100 f1.8 or 18-35 f1.8. very sharp lenses and the wide apertures take in allot of light.

    but the AF-D lenses are old ones aren't they? These days Nikon only produces the AF-S and manual focusing lenses. So, no one produces metal lenses anymore except for carl zeiss etc.
    I only would like to say that this L lenses or the pro lens gear from nikon is not built out of metal but they are still very well built and much lighter... my opinion..

    Canon EF 24-70mm f / 2.8L II I decided to buy this lens; But esta has no image Stabilization and my question is not recorded on camera video Much would affect me to take pictures? Or stabilization is only for movies

    Maybe if you used a 24-70mk1 that has not been dropped down a flight of stairs it might produce a better image. It would be nice to see the mk2 compared to a nice mk1.

    Of course & yes, it affects the quality. The quality will be vastly improved compared to EF-S lenses.

    7:44 - Did you have lens abberration correction turned on during the shoot? Perhaps color fringing was corrected at the camera level. I would like to know if the fringing is apparent without correction.

    deciding on a standard zoom lens is pretty tough. ive been trying to figure out what to get for 2 weeks now. the tamron has IS and is much cheaper, but the canon is sharper and has FAR less distortion. i know i can fix distortion but you can't fix sharpness.
