After 35 years shooting Canon ( all the way back to the FD system) I found that my most used lens for the last 5 years has been my 24-105mm f4L coupled with my ef85mm f1.8 and old "Magic Drainpipe" 80-200mm f2.8L. Still a super sharp combo on my 5D and only $1,500 total for the great glass
My Top 5: 1. 16-35 f4L IS (f2.8 if you're into Astro) 2. 24mm 1.4L II 3. 24-70 f2.8 II 4. 85mm 1.4L IS 5. 70-200 f2.8 IS USM 2 or 3. Canon 400mm f2.8 IS II usm for Wildlife/Sports stuff.
Why the 24mm when both 16-35 and 24-70 are covering that focal range? Is the 24 substantially that good than the other 2? I get that the aperture is considerably bigger but I'd assume the 24mm is mostly for landscape. Is f/1.4 required for landscape?
Canon 35 f/1.4 II - probably the best lens I've ever used. Fast AF, even in low light. Insanely sharp. Beautiful bokeh. I have the 50 1.2 as well and often this one is used more often in portrait work.
Man. The 11-24 is amazing for architecture, indoors and city travel. I used it last week for running through London and taking snaps of pretty much everything. Just take a small nifty fifty with it for the occasional portrait shot and you are happy. Yes, it is heavy. Yes, it is not cheap - but the images are crazy.
As a close up kinda guy only (8mm-35mm range with L Series Canon and Sigma Glass), its Fun seeing a mid to long range HQ glass user taking some pristine shots. I'm subbed. Clean content. 😎👌
My all time favorite is the 85/1.2L. I also adore Canon's cheaper 35mm, the f/2 IS, and 135/2L (traded for 100L macro), but also the older Nikon 17-35/2.8 and 80-200/2.8.
My favorites: 50mm f/1.2 L, 85mm f/1.2 L ii, 24-70 f/2.8 L ii, 11-24mm f/4 L and 600mm f/4 L ii. And yes, I own them all, and many more. Thank you for another excellent video!
We all have different needs and, just as important, different limitations. Mine are financial and fitness. I frequently photograph motorcycle trials, here in Queensland, where it is mostly hot, humid and hot, occasionally just hot. I find myself hoofing it up and down hills, bashing through forests and wading streams. I may also have to execute the odd ninja move because SNAKE!!! Consequently, my total lens kit on a shoot comprises a 16-35 f/2.8L, a 24-105 f/4L and a 70-200 f/2.8L. For 90% of the time, I will have the 24-105 on one body and the 70-200 on another, hanging from a double-camera harness. This setup produces excellent results, gives me a great working range and creative flexibility, but also reduces lens swaps to an absolute minimum, pretty important in dry and dusty locations. I will usually take the 16-35 along too, which can be a lifesaver in heavily wooded sections, but only when shooting riders I can trust! So for me, the best lenses are those that produce great results, but are also practical and affordable. Boring, eh?
Never get bored of this guy .. I come to him whenever I need some lens therapy! Who needs all that "....and when we go to the corners we need some noticeable lack in sharpness and colour fringing ....bla bla bla....." .. as if your colour printer is gonna start dying trying to print those areas!! Kai makes it far more direct and if you catch his drift you can pick up some good points!
Interesting video.... i am one of those photographers which uses 3 lenses last 13 years... and dont really have desire to buy more so it was nice to see what you use and what is out there... nicely done
I've only started photography a few months ago and I picked up a A6000 for a steal, i recently bought my first Sony lens, the 18-105 and I personally love it, it's really teaching me more than anything, being a lot to do landscapes and a bit of wildlife and even portraits in the same lens, im just learning from my mistakes everywhere. I dont have most most lens knowledge under my belt, but I still felt the need to say I love my 18-105.
My most practical would be the 24-70 and 70-200. I've got the 24-70 f4 IS and the 70-200 2.8 non-IS. But if I had to choose a favorite that would be the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2 That thing is INSANE.
I’m always slightly worried about using this lens out and about, it is slow but such a wide aperture coupled with this focal length allows for some dreamy portraits.
The 1.2 is great for portraits - as long as the subject is patiently posing for you. Forget taking pics of kids, pets etc. Focussing is way too slow. And f1.2 is hardly ever successful. Then you take 1.4 or 1.8 - and can get the much faster (in focussing) new 85mm lens with IS. It's cheaper, too.
Don't understand why this guy doesn't present the point make lot of noise and waste our time to get right information It was like a puzzle instead of a answer,🤔😊
Serious mistake to chose 50mm f/1.2 over the 35mm f/1.4 L II. The later has much better optics and the 50mm suffers from lacking a floating element which effects the AF badly at portrait distances (if you stop down).
I love my EF 100mm Macro, my 50mm f/1.4, and my EF 10-18mm ultra wide. Those are my favorite Canon lenses. My favorite lenses for my Canon made by others are all Lensbaby products: the Velvet 85, Burnside 35, and my Composer Pro II with multiple different front optics (Twist 60 being my favorite).
The best if the best for me would include 85mm f1.2 version 1 and the 135 f2 both very sharp and pricy. Ended up selling the 85 f1.2 a few years ago as it was not being used as much as I thought it would. Coming in down the line is the 50mm f1.4 greats for street photography and some portrait work.
Another great video! I think the 100 macro 2.8L is way more versatile than expected. Most people think it’s just for extreme closeups but also great for portraits and landscapes. Also the cheapest L lens! If you can believe it.
I haven't used a ton of Canon glass but from what I've seen and used I would say: Canon 50mm f/1.2 Sigma 105mm f/1.4 (not native Canon I know but I'm pretty sure I would prefer it to the 85s) Canon 300mm f/2.8 (AKA the beast) Canon 16-35mm f/2.8 Canon 70-200mm f/2.8
Personal favs: 24-105mm f/4L. I know it’s a kit lens for some FF cameras but when I got it I was still using an 18-55mm. The 24-105 is now my go to lens. 70-200mm f/2.8L USM (non-IS). This thing is a beast of a lens, even without IS. Under the appropriate circumstances the images are amazingly sharp. I’d only get rid of it to trade up for the IS II or III. 85mm f/1.8. My gosh. The portraits that I pull from this thing. I’m not a pro but this thing gives me the confidence to think that I could be.
85mm 1.2 ii, 24mm 1.4 ii, 35mm 1.4 ii, 24-70mm 2.8 ii, and 70-200 2.8 IS ii are some amazing lenses. Especially the 85 for its unique look and 24-70 2.8 for it's versatility
Hello. Thank You for the informative video. A quick question - for the first lens, did you colour correct or do any post-processing before including them in this presentation? Thanks, Vik
I run with Canon’s 100-400 LII; 70-200 2.8 LII; 16-35 f4 L1; kit 24-105 f4 LII and the Sigma art 50 1.4. On my 5D mark IV. It all fits in my back pack with ease. Less the 100-400. I swap between it and the 70-200 depending on the activity. Along with three extra batteries, and a Speedlite 430EX III-RT with a foldable soft box. My favorite is the kit lens. It s on my camera for most of my shots.
I'm only missing the 11-24mm in this list. My top favorite is the 135mm, next is 85mm then 50mm. Love them all, awesome video Kai and thank you to Adorama for sponsoring this!
35mm 1.4 II has become my favorite lens. I avoided 35mm lenses for 10 years because I thought they were boring until I realized the 35mm really shines at 1.4 on full frame. It can surprisingly isolate the subject very well, pretty much all the time, which is different that than turning your background into watercolors, but as for composition, it's a real workhorse. Now it is always 1 of the 2 lenses that's always with me. The other one being wider or more telephoto. And sorry to say the 50mm 1.2 rarely makes it out these days now that the 35mm has taken its place.
This might not be a popular choice but I love the 24-105mm f4. I know that if I only have space to take one lens its versatility will cover nearly all situations well enough to get pleasing photographs
I just love my 24-70 and 70-200 L lens combo - the 24-70 lives on the body though, moving out of the L lens, I rate the pancake 40mm STM lens up there. Discrete, fast enough and sharp as a tack for the price :) I'm drooling over that ultrawide zoom though... proper lens envy!
My favorite AF lens on Canon full frame DSLR would be Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM. It's sharp, the aberrations are almost non-existing, interestingly the contrast is quite ok and the quality / amount of bokeh is very good. It's not the L-series USM but it's fast focusing and pretty silent. It's fairly compact. It's just a joy to use. If you love EF 85/1.8 USM, I recommend you to try this one. Use it a week or two. Compare the images. Pixel peep. Develope actual prints. See if you fall in love.
It's 2023 and I am just getting into the EOS EF system. Why? I love shooting film, I am getting older, my eye sight is getting weaker and I want to continue shooting 135 film with modern features such as reliable auto-focus and image stabilization. I got myself an EOS 1n and EOS 1v on the cheap, I added the 24-105 f4 L IS (first version), the 50mm f1.2l (it has back focus issues, focuses an inch behind where the focus point is, sent back on warranty), I ordered a 35mm f2 IS USM. I got a 24mm L tilt shift (first version). I am looking into more stabilized glass to allow for sharper images on lower ISO film. I also added a used 5DII to the kit. It's amazing how cheap all of that stuff has become. My Leica setup has competition now.
I just got a Canon EF 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5 II and it is an absolute pleasure to shoot with. Loud as hell but that just goes well with the loud shutter on my Og 5D. For crop it's the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 flat, light, sharp, and fun. I will take just that and my 70D out all day shooting all kinds of stuff. Hands down these are my favourite lenses I own.
My top 5 Canon: Canon 135mm f/2L Canon 11-24mm f/4L Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II Canon 400mm f/2.8 L IS II These lenses do it for me!
Its a pure joy. However I do not use it wide open. the best things are the satisfying weight and balance, really big bright viewfinder, colour reproduction, a focal length I really like, minimal shutter snap. I have a couple other FL lenses - 35mm f2.5 and 85mm f1.8 both really good, but my favourite is the 58mm.
Got it, Richard. When i'm on the go, which used to be always, due to college, I preffered my kit to be reeeally light, now i'm kinda changing that. I don't know how would I perform using that a heavy setup though. The only thing that I felt was a weak point, with my Rebel G, was the fact that the viewfinder isn't as bright and big as other cameras...
GO back and watch all of the OLD Digital REV videos Kai MADE that channel what is was. When he left the it went downhill fast. So glad his own channel is doing well.
My top 5 are: 24mm f/1.4L, 50mm f/1.2L and 135mm f/2.0L. From there is a bit blurry, but it has to be the 24-70mm f/2.8L II, 70-200 f/2.8L III or maybe the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L II.
Cool video and selection of lenses! Here is my own top 5, probably a bit more conservative list than yours, but that's the one I currently own and use happily on a 5D MKIV: 16-35mm f/2.8 III, 24-70mm f/2.8 II, 70-200mm f/2.8 IS II, 35mm f/1.4 II, 85mm f/1.4 IS (I also own a 6th and last lens: the 100mm f/2.8 IS Macro which I enjoy a lot too).
Finally some Canon love! I am sick to death of hearing a about . . . Sony. My Canon camera and lens take fab photos. Getting new Sony gear is not going to make me a better photographer.
i was wondering why he didn't choose that ? may be because he can't select every L prime from 24 to 135mm and one can always crop 24mm image to arrive at 35mm f/2 equivalent on crop sensor, but one can't get a 24mm view from a 35mm. Possibly that could be the reason, even if 35 II L is the latest and 24 II L is very old. Thanks.
I had one and it was one of the best buying decisions I ever did. Beautiful results. But it got stolen together with my 70-200/4 IS and 6D when I travelled with a friend in Canada 😪
Good video as always Kai, I have a few old L series and a 16-35 f/4 L IS but the lens that stays on my camera is the Canon 28-300 f/3.5-5.6 L IS. I seldom go out to shoot anything in specific, if I do it is buildings and I use the 16-35, so the 28-300 is the most practical for me.
@Typisch Norddeutsch TV die 4K Qualität ist ja nicht mal das Problem, sondern der Codec... wenn man 5 128 GB Karten dabei hat kann man schon ein paar Minuten aufzeichnen xD
My current line up consists of the 24LII, 50L, 85L/IS, 100L/IS and 200/2.8 to go with a couple 5DIV's. Perhaps I'll add a 35LII down the road but I feel like I'm covered for now.
To be quite honest i dont understand why you only chose canon glass, the title is 5 best lenses for canon FF cameras, not 5 best canon lenses for canon FF cameras.... Why didnt you include third party manufacturers like Sigma, Samyang, Tamron....etc , the Sigma Art lineup is often said to be better than their canon counterparts, while at the same time being cheaper, so isnt a better value for money lens better ?
After 35 years shooting Canon ( all the way back to the FD system) I found that my most used lens for the last 5 years has been my 24-105mm f4L coupled with my ef85mm f1.8 and old "Magic Drainpipe" 80-200mm f2.8L. Still a super sharp combo on my 5D and only $1,500 total for the great glass

My Top 5:
1. 16-35 f4L IS (f2.8 if you're into Astro)
2. 24mm 1.4L II
3. 24-70 f2.8 II
4. 85mm 1.4L IS
5. 70-200 f2.8 IS USM 2 or 3.
Canon 400mm f2.8 IS II usm for Wildlife/Sports stuff.
Why the 24mm when both 16-35 and 24-70 are covering that focal range?

This lens rocks. The first lens everyone canon should buy after the kit lens.
Best lens ever

Raymond Timothy haha 50mm 1.2 right here
Why? I love mine.

Canon 35 f/1.4 II - probably the best lens I've ever used. Fast AF, even in low light. Insanely sharp. Beautiful bokeh. I have the 50 1.2 as well and often this one is used more often in portrait work.

25-105L f/4 I’ve used that lens an almost every situation!

A really underrated lens. The 100 is fantastic, flexible and amazing value for money.
Yep to all you wrote, I put it on the top 3 best lenses.
The 16-35m=m f2.8L is a great lens. When I need to go even wider, I use the 8.15mm f4L fisheye. That lens is truly crazy.
I have 35 1.4 II and 85 1.4 IS and don’t need nothing more

Please top 5 lenses for canon crop)))
The Cano 85mm 1.8 is awesome. My favorite lens in my bag.
Is the Sony version next?
KaiManWong Do IT !!!
Loving the American Psycho reference, superb Kai.
16-35 f2.8, most versatile focal length, a lens you can get for under $1k
I just love my 24-70 and 70-200 L lens combo - the 24-70 lives on the body though, moving out of the L lens, I rate the pancake 40mm STM lens up there. Discrete, fast enough and sharp as a tack for the price :) I'm drooling over that ultrawide zoom though... proper lens envy!
Can you do top 5 for Sony?
That´s impossible
No because now Sigma is in the game for full frame Sony. Don't be a naysayer :)
easy
35 Distagon
55/1.8
85GM
135 Batis
70-200GM
with sigma, you may add 24/1.4 which is cool... or 35/1.4 as a cheap alternative
Easy.
This video + MC-11.
Drew noooooo Lol
My favorite AF lens on Canon full frame DSLR would be Canon EF 100mm f/2 USM. It's sharp, the aberrations are almost non-existing, interestingly the contrast is quite ok and the quality / amount of bokeh is very good. It's not the L-series USM but it's fast focusing and pretty silent. It's fairly compact. It's just a joy to use. If you love EF 85/1.8 USM, I recommend you to try this one. Use it a week or two. Compare the images. Pixel peep. Develope actual prints. See if you fall in love.
Great one - as usual. And today I bought a Sigma 20mm 1.4 Art at an 80% discount, THAT will be interesting to try out... Any experience Kai?
incredibly jealous
They're a work of art. Well, it says 'art' on them. Seriously, I really like the Sigmas.
Kai W That's good to hear! Thanks.
Where did you get it ?? And how can I get the same discount?
Julius julius would love to know too
It's 2023 and I am just getting into the EOS EF system.
The Canon EOS 5D Mark IV is still a very effective all-purpose full frame DSLR for professionals.
5 seconds in and you're chucking shit at the Nikon users...
I agree with all you´ve mentioned. But the 16-35 F/4 and the 35 F/1.4 II are also amazing.
Chromatic aberration at 2:46 😶
I really enjoy the f/2.8 70-200 IS II USM. It’s been my go-to for YEARS in my sports photography and general news photography.
2:16 Kai, you're glowing!
The 24-70 f/2.8 Lii should be in the list. AF and IQ is just awesome! I don’t use my 50mm and 20mm after I bought the 24-70
55mm f/1.8 - It's light and inexpensive and good as a starter
24-70 & 70-200 f/2.8L IS USM
100mm MACRO
I think this is a really good choice.
My top 5 Canon:
Canon 135mm f/2L
Canon 11-24mm f/4L
Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L II
Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II
Canon 400mm f/2.8 L IS II
These lenses do it for me!
Nowadays I shoot more film, and there is no combo better than my trusty EOS Rebel G with the nifty 50 and the 24-105mm imo
I still shoot plenty of film and my favourite combination is the FL 58mm F1.2 and the FT QL.
Richard Hale that's an awesome setup, dude! I wonder how it's like to shoot with such a fast aperture lens.
It is not really that heavy, and it is well balanced. If you want heavy you should try my Bronica ETRS with prism finder!
Nicely produced video ~ very informative but also entertaining at same time
0:40 was the best CG Effect ever!
Got the 24 - 105 L and some of the shots just jump out at me as surprisingly amazing
nice work i am watching your channel 4 months and you inspire me. Before 1 month i got my first dslr nikon d 3400
GO back and watch all of the OLD Digital REV videos Kai MADE that channel what is was. When he left the it went downhill fast. So glad his own channel is doing well.
I did also 2 mounths ago (But the 1300D)
Im not watching on channel 4
George FTW I just got my first DSLR last week Canon T6. Canon All day feel me?
BlackEntrepreneur24 i have the same (But the international 1300D version) it is great you will love it
I use the old Canon 50mm f1.8 lens on my mirrorless camera and the results are so good. I love it.I need to find more FD mount lenses.
Yay, I own one of these lenses. 135 f2.
I love my Canon 100-400 II and Canon 70-200 F2.8 II for sports and wildlife photos. Love Kai's videos!
135L 50L 24L cool vid kai W
My top 5 are: 24mm f/1.4L, 50mm f/1.2L and 135mm f/2.0L. From there is a bit blurry, but it has to be the 24-70mm f/2.8L II, 70-200 f/2.8L III or maybe the 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L II.
No better travel-telezoom than 70-300 L: smaller and more reach than 70-200 2.8
Cool video and selection of lenses!
Mint video Kai! Mine tops are 50mm f1.4 and 135mm f2!
Don't forget the 35mm f1.4LII it is best 35mm ever made it surpasses zeiss glasses
i was wondering why he didn't choose that ? may be because he can't select every L prime from 24 to 135mm and one can always crop 24mm image to arrive at 35mm f/2 equivalent on crop sensor, but one can't get a 24mm view from a 35mm. Possibly that could be the reason, even if 35 II L is the latest and 24 II L is very old. Thanks.
You are right, the 135 f2 is just stunning... also, the 35mm 1.4 is just great!!
6:01 Guy in the middle: "Ok guys, you need to help me. I can't find my Laowa 24mm F/14 2x Macro lens."
I have the old FD 50mm f/1.2L.
It’s nice, but I usually don’t open anything up past f/1.8.
It’s fun on my Sony and Fuji though.
The 35mm f/2 IS is growing on me
Cover Slaves I want one
It's pretty spicy :)
have one. love it
I've got one and damn it's such a good lens.
Kai posts, I enjoy the video, I give it a thumbs up, he rewards me with another video in the future. How'd I get so lucky?
I love 28-70mm f/2.8 USM L for it's price to performance ratio. It's fairy cheap pro lens (Given it's a bit old but still great!)
Canon 4thewin! 👍 Nice Video!
CANON TS-E 24MM F3.5 L II needs some love. Fantastic lens if you are actually into the artistic composition side of photography.
*Next: Top 5 clip on lenses for your cell phone!*
But Kai, what about the 40mm f/2.8?!
I think the Sigma 50mm is better than the Canon equivalent. I don´t need f1,2 anyway!
Love my 50 1.2, was my first lens with my 5D MK III
Darren van y do u like it. What would be a good used price
