What do you think of Disney's handling of Star Wars? How should they move forwards?
star wars has been disney's greatest franchise failure. I've checkec out a long time ago and that's coming from a hardcore SW fan. Luckily I saw Dune 2 couple weeks ago.
Atleast there are still some sci-fi epics being treated right
They should cut out the whole wokeness and get rid of Mary Sues.
I have been a hardcore Star Wars fan for 47 years. And I continue to be a hardcore Star Wars fan: of the stories George Lucas created. Episodes I-VI + TCW = Star Wars.
Disney Wars... total fail! Wish I could wipe my memory of it!
I was born during run ot the OT but I had the toys and would watch the films every years for years as they were always on over Christmas so prequels were my first in cinema as well as my sister's generation and she is 10 years younger than me and was 11 when Phantom Menace and her generation were the ones who grew up on them and the characters meant something to her as I'd take her to see them all (she cried twice during episode 3 during Order 66 and the Padme funeral march). She dropped out after Last Jedi and only has the OT and Prequels on DVD. I saw them all and Force Awakens was a family affair in terms of 3 generations going to see them by the time of Rise of Skywalker there was hardly any of the younger generation there at all and I think this is where they failed as the Prequels did bring a new generation where the sequels didn't really.
Honestly, I give them a generous 3 out of 10. They haven’t done jack crap with video games. They completely ruined, beloved characters. 3 garbage movies with terrible plots. And inexcusably poor TV shows on Disney+. Putting extremely divisive political overtones in something that is supposed to be an escape for people.
However, they have had a couple of good things. I’m not unreasonable or unwilling to acknowledge it. Rogue One, Rebels and Clone Wars have been about the only good things that have come out. After 12 years, though, I expected so so much more content and so much better content. It’s just one massive disappointment overall.
8 billion? Then why no theatrical films for five years now? Why has the merch taken a hit?
Kathy is pocketing money for sure
The fact that they earned 8 billion doesn't mean they have to keep producing movies constantly. Look at the state of Marvel...
There were no SW movies so they can plan ahead on how to go forward. Which they didn't do for the sequels. So this is actually a good thing.
Merch taken a hit simply because of the economic recession in the last few years
@@villadavid1997 It's not since their upcoming movies are MAndo and Grogu and the Rey movie
@@villadavid1997 The toys are hugely discounted at dollar/thrift stores and they can't even sell them. You forget that Disney wanted one new movie a year then that changed when they lost money. Also, the recession is not entirely the issue. Reduction in toy quality, unpopular character toys (based on unpopular movie characters), and yes, price hikes due to Bidenflation.
There were no films for sixteen years after the OT.
All that money to destroy a beloved universal fandom.
The toxic fans did that
I was at Walmart, and no one is interested in Star Wars. There are a large number of Star Wars toys stuff sitting on the shelf collecting dust. Not all, but most of the Lego Star Wars is not getting bought. George Lucas screwed up BIG time selling Star Wars to Disney.

yeah, theres a lot of caveats to these numbers. Theres no mention of the hotels and attractions and the series. they might have made 8 billion but what did it cost? This isnt being fully disclosed.
They are reporting Revenue not Profit. They probably spent $8.5b - $9.0b to make that. Also they are probably counting depreciation as profit, knowing Iger.
Yep there is an incredibly FINE print explaining it doesn’t have take into account how much money they put into the hotels and Disney+ shows

With a juggernaut IP like Star Wars, it’s embarrassing it’s only 8 billion
What??? Do you know how much that is based off a single IP? That's more than Star Trek and LoTR combined. Lol
That's what I was thinking as well.
@@epitome1968 yeah but star wars up to that point was a 30 billion dollar property. cant believe george only sold it for 4b

@@achaudhari101 in the actual Disney breakout straight from Disney they have a paragraph of fine print below the chart that explains how this does not factor in the costs of the movies, marketing, theater cuts, foreign theater cuts, the cost of the 2 parks and the failed hotel.
If you factor in all that they are sever billion in the hole.
WDW Pro had a great breakdown of this profit claim.
@achaudhari101 well they didn't
First they have interest on the 4 Billion they paid, checked that inflation rate lately...then overhead to operate LucasFilm including separate grounds, executives, producers , creatives ( think JJ or Favreau were free? I'm sure Filoni was )...
Then you got marketing cost, production cost....
Then you have an average of about 45% taken by all releases back to the Studio meaning Solo lost 200-300 million and TROPalpatine barely broke even at 1B with all the reshoots...
TFA made good money and the rest should have increased like Avengers Infinity War and EndGame ( IX was literally a 40 year running EndGame ) but instead of you look from 2nd week on of TLJ NOTHING has performed to expectations and ita ALL trended down since every metric....thats not even counting the "meat left on the bone" which I assure you shareholders view as lost revenue which is why that stock dove to a 20 year low....
Then Disney+ has never been marketable yet they have lost Billions on it as well as the Galactic Star cruiser...that service was launched of Mando which had a chance to revive Star Wars but again KK gets involved and every single season since has declining viewership on a platform that's losing money ( this is all on the books )....nothing aside from Mando season 1 has performed well for them it's steadily killed interest in the IP as they butcher Canon...
No they are WAY under on their original investment when all vectors of acquisition, operation, and returns are actually calculated including marketing cap itself it's been mismanaged and run into the ground they should easily be sitting on 12b in PROFIT with it on tue lips of everyone around the water cooler Ala Game of Thrones.....
Go ahead and watch house or the Dragon and imagine they had light sabers instead of swords thats what we should get....grounded well written, executed and shot Star Wars stories instead we got Rings of Power lol big budget and no substance
All they had to do was take the kotor game and put it on the big screen like for like, put keanu in it as revan and it'd make well over a billion
Unless they had some unknown director who normally makes documentaries or someone who just wants to make their own fan fiction they wrote in high school.
Disney is never going to do what the old fans want them to do.
Nah because they'd made it so Bastila was the hero of the story who had to save Revan, and he was only a useless plot device to help her find out SHE was the one to destroy the sith not him, and face off with Malak where she would easily beat him on the Star Forge, as the counsel on Dantooine was only suppressing her awesome power from the beginning. No lets keep disney away from any EU stuff, they will just massacre that too.
@@mace7077What part of like for like do people not understand
That is a profit of about $650 million/year since they bought the property rights. They could have easily quadrupled that money if they played their cards right.
Even if it was good, people would’ve gotten tired of it because it was never meant to be so saturated. These were meant to be isolated stories with clear beginning, middle and end. You can’t tell a story forever. They’re always needs to be some kind of ending and we need to stick to that ending, otherwise people stop caring.
@@Ash_Reinuh no. No it's not. Hence why do many books lmao

@Ash_Rein wrong, marvel was hugely successful all the way to endgame. Then quality took a nosedive and since then they've been struggling. If u make a good product consistently, people will still show up. If u make a crappy product consistently, people are going to stop supporting.
@@dragondrakage2402 I think you’re missing the point. Endgame was seen by most people as literally the end. It gave them an ending for something they invested in for over a decade. Most people moved on. The actors essentially moved on. Consistency doesn’t matter after a point. everything in the world ends. Stories also need to end. That’s partly why they’re special. Going on and on and on and on and on makes them less special and people stop caring about them.

Something isnt adding up here
Muchisimo dinero gastaron, y es una miseria para disney solo 8mil millones

How do you know its net profit? Because they said so? lol You think a multi-multi billion dollar company wouldnt lie about something like that if they knew the truth would look bad? I mean, theyve had the Star Wars IP for over 10 years now. With how much Star Wars was bringing in before, that number should be a lot higher with all the movies, tv shows, merch, video games and theme parks theyve made over the years. But since everything is falling apart for them, and has been steadily over the years, it should be lower than 8 billion. _If_ its all net.
All that aside, Disney is factoring things in like _projected_ profits of currently running products. In other words, the number is made up.
The problem with Disney is that they prioritize money above quality stories/ movies
They are different from marvel studios and Lucasfilm, bob iger told feige to refocus on marvel movies and tv shows and less but when it comes to Star Wars it’s the opposite
One of the problems
That’s how all of corporate America is unfortunately.
No, lol. Money is definitely not the priority. The priority has been to undermine and rewrite George Lucas stories to create a new female-centric property. It's purely an ESG, DEI effort.

Your right. They got to that number by just stating what they purchased LucasFilm for and the total gross profit. Or in english, they left out any production cost or marketing or literally any other expendatures for the movies, shows, books, toys, parks and more.
The headline news of "Disney made 8 billion from Star Wars" doesn't hit as hard once you realize Disney has spent 7 billion (minimum) on top of the initial 4 billion and are in the best case scenario, a 1/4th into breaking even on the initial investment.
To put it into perspective, candy crush makes 20 billion a year
Candy Crush revenue was $1.21 billion in 2021, dipped slightly in 2022 to $1 billion.
I don't know where you found those numbers, but they are wrong.
When you think that to date, Marval has brought in about 30 billion and that's Movies only. 8 Billion is an embarrassment for one of the most well none franchises on earth. This is what mismanagement will get you. We saw what Disney thought of Star Wars when they opened Galaxies' edge. Almost no advertising. Just expecting the fan base to respond and hand over their money. And on opening day know one showed up. Disney scrambled to get enough advertising out there, but the damage was done when they created a land that no one could relate to. When you go to Universal Studios and go to Harry Potter Land. You can put yourself in places you've seen in the movies. Nothing but the Falcon in relatable in Star Wars land. This is sad.

You’re spot on about the piles of toys(clearance) when it comes to Star Wars and Marvel. It’s really sad honestly. You can create multiple bonfires with that. We’re just not seeing the same amount of collection madness that happened from the 90s to early 2000s with the prequel‘s. Disney can keep saying that they’ve made money but I don’t believe them. Going by their foolish business decisions in the past, they’ve lost a LOT of money.
You could make bonfires out of the toys that never sold in the 90s and 2000s as well. Loads if that stuff never got sold and got put in the bargin bin.
@@mrbubbles6468 You’re downplaying the absolute failure of Disney's perversion of Star Wars by saying 'Uhhh, some toys didn’t sell well when Lucas owned the series too.'
@@mrbubbles6468 True some toys didn’t sell too well like Jar Jar Binks for example. However the more popular characters sold extremely well: Qui Gon, Obi Wan, Maul, Mace Windu, Yoda, etc etc. back then a lot of times they were sold out because of scalpers, parents wanting to buy toys during the holidays, and of course people just wanting to collect. *Much of Disney's gains from Endgame, Avatar 2 and The Force Awakens have been lost through a lot of the recent bombs or break evens from live action and animation -- of course She Hulk's total budget of $220 million + didn't exactly help matters, too ~*
No solo marvel, star wars sus series tenia altos presupuesto tambien
Force Awakens cost a lot of money to make and market and the same with Avatar 2 which had half a billion budget.
I think the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy is overall better than the Sequel Trilogy.
Not really a contest is it. Prequels had at least 2 films that were good being AOTC and ROTS good films in their own right but the meme potential allows them to get referenced long after their initial releases. The TV series, books/EU helps them greatly and the game adaptations adds to their success plus everyone now liking them a lot more than they did. Sequels could get this but the damage is irreversible.
Sequels had nothing outside of its trilogy and TFA was it's best film and being critical it's very similar to ANH, TLJ was terrible and TROS tried it's hardest to repair the damage.
The sequel also have no dedicated games just content in others BF2, Minecraft, Fortnite and Lego remakes, the animated TV series bombed as who watched Resistance, no one did. There were barely any Books or comics exploring characters further. They didn't try with the sequels or have a plan.
Hello, Captain Obvious!
and water is wet. what's your point?
That's a low bar lol. Doesn't mean prequels are particularly good.
Love the idea of jumping ahead after 9 or back before 1. Use brand new characters and tie them into the original films by referencing a character or event that happened, but still have a brand new story.
I remember George Lucas saying that Star Wars wasn't about sci-fi, cool ships, inter-galactic battle, etc. but it was all about FAMILY. I think that's why Star Wars was a huge success because he was able to create a universe that had all those cool aspects of sci-fi, but he kept the theme around family. People want to watch movies that relate to them, and family is probably the #1 thing everyone can relate to.

Yeah, I call BS that they made any significant profit, their toys sold so badly Hasbro was like nah we ain't making any more. Galaxies Edge and the Hotel Star Cruiser both did way under what they should and the hotel was shutting down last I saw. While TFA made money, TLJ and RoS did bad and worse. Disney+ had 2 good seasons of The Mandalorian and everything else SW was an unmitigated disaster. Only the games and Clone Wars/rebels have found any real success and they have not done nearly as good as older LA games. BF1 did ok, BF2 was a disastrous launch, squadrons did well for a small game, Jedi Survivor did good, and 2 did ok as its kinda of buggy and unoptimized. Oh and Andor and Rogue One were fantastic but neither was super popular sadly went fairly unnoticed by the masses.
They could've made a lot more if they treated the franchise right.
The beginning of the Disney plus shows gave us so much false hope it’s insane, the amount of potential they have with Star Wars with billions of dollars and thousands of talented people working for Disney, it’s absolutely absurd what they have done to the franchise. Yes! You're so right about how Galaxy's Edge would be so much more profitable if it were set in an actual place from the original trilogy, or the prequels. How cool would that be? To actually feel like you're there, like Pandora at Animal Kingdom, or Diagon Alley at Universal. I want to feel like I'm visiting the places we've seen in the movies, to feel fully immersed in them. Preferably the original trilogy.
The fact that Diagon Alley has its own place and Galaxy’s Edge has this little corner in the bigger park shows how Disney really feels about Star Wars, and how little they understand or are willing or able to grasp its impact on pop-culture and filmmaking, alone. This is if it wasn’t obvious enough by Disney hiring directors who didn’t find it necessary to prioritize their Star Wars movie, when they don’t bring in people who openly don’t like Star Wars. Much of the technology Disney takes for granted for when they make movies exists because George pushed for them to be made while working as a director, knowledge they probably have or had no idea about, and this is how they thank him.
The prequel era would be hard to set the tone for that era because just in the 3 movies alone the expansion of planets, lore, & themes was massive. The original trilogy & trash sequels have just one general tone overall. Original trilogy after ROTJ is the best bet.
The prequel era would be cool.. but would require a lot of effort.

“8 billion dollars? All you care about, is good STAR WARS. Hollywood deserves a better class of criminal and I’m gonna give it to them!”
- Bob Iger & Disney
Very clever. Now give me any Shakespeare quote. Give me any quote from any book. Without actually looking it up.
Imagine how much money they'd have made if their products were actually good.
Possible:
-3 trilogy films, 2 stand alone films
- theme park merchandise,
- Disney+ shows
- Star Wars day if is done by Disney.
- online merchandise
Yeah it’s possible to get that much, I agree with the other comments that is low. They could have made alot more
Curious on how the net income looks afterwards
My dream scene is Luke talking to Anakin's ghost about Order 66 over a campfire, with dramatic slow motion flashbacks of Anakin destroying Jedi at the temple, walking through fire, choking out guys, I want it so bad!
that sounds so cool man. see this is what fans can create.
Luke: "Father, I feel the pull of the Dark Side. I felt it when I fought you on the Death Star. I sensed it again when I saved Grogu and his friends. I fear its power, its influence over me. I'm failing as a Jedi."
Anakin: "Luke, do you remember when I told you it was too late for me? I was wrong. You were right about me. You saw the good in me where I could not. You saved me. That is a power far greater than even the Dark Side itself. Use that power. Embrace the courage within you. Draw strength from it just as you did when you faced the Emperor without a weapon. And if that is not enough and you find yourself lost, lean upon your sister. Let her help you just as you have helped her countless times. That bond is special, and it will shield you both from evil."
Luke: "Thank you, father. Will I ever see you again?"
Anakin: "Remember your training with Obi-Wan. The Force is not seeing; it is feeling. Trust your instincts. Know that wherever your journey takes you, the Force will be with you...and I shall always be with you, my son."
No, you don’t. Let it go. Nothing‘s gonna be your imagination. Just let it go goddamnit let it go. We don’t need more Star Wars. We don’t need more Star Trek. We don’t need more marvel. We don’t need more DC. We need these things to stop. We need much less. Things are precious because they’re rare.
@@Ash_Rein No. We the fans will fight for the cultural stories that inspire us. Get lost.
@@Hylanvahr fans will literally be abused and taken advantage of and kept stupid until all your money is gone, and there’s nothing left to take from you. Because that’s what these capitalist corporations do. And that’s what you guys are willing to let happen to you. There’s more than one way to be assaulted. And they are literally assaulting you; and everyone that thinks that it’s OK for a story to go on forever. Let it go. Enjoy some thing for what it is when it’s comes. And then let it go and move on. And if you were actually inspired by any of these characters, you would be fighting and revolting the same way the rebellion went against the Empire. If you were actually inspired, you wouldn’t be one of the emperors pons letting literal genocide happen. 30,000+ women and children slaughtered so far just so they could build condos. And people being herded into camps to be processed and systematically murdered. Yeah, you’re so inspired. Shame on you. And shame on us all.
Hell yea Theory :D I agree 100% with you and thank you for being so consistent no matter what you do bro.. Best entertainer on the internet
I cam confirm as a regular at Star Wars Celebration, there is almost little to none Sequel trilogy merchandise. Aside from a few paintings here and there, everything is OG/Prequel merch, accessories, etc.
ray charles can see this is BS
There were a lot of great books that they decided weren't canon out of the blue. Too bad, would've loved to see Darth Bane on the big screen. Oh well.
It’s up to the fans now
If disney didn't sh!t on the fans they could have made 108 billion.....but noooo, they went with catering to the people that are barely a % of viewers of their product.....so yes disney deserves this sh!tstorm
They're doing fine without you.
A financial success is very different from a critical success
"Made" seems to be the crucial word here.
The real question is how much they earned.
I would have no problem with a ray movie. If ben Solo was in the movie. And And wasn't killed off an episode nine
All things considered that's not as much as they should
We went to Disney World and Galaxys Edge. My kid wanted Luke Skywalker stuff which they have next to none of there, but man, do they have Sequel garbage everywhere.
That's the one thing I never understood after Disney bought Star Wars they just canceled upcoming star wars games and I remember reading an article saying Lucas flims or Arts didn't get any communication from higher ups a after Star Wars was sold. Like bro half of those canceled games were supposedly almost finished how Disney decide canceling them was a bright idea is beyond me
Real quick- what does all the licensing for merch sold at the theme parks count as? Or even LEGO set licensing.
Universal is about to make a brand new state of the art park and Disney is shoveling money into Disney+. Yes the Mandolorian was good but also realize how much they are focused on pumping out shows vs the route of Star Wars.
We were suppose to get a whole New Republic saga over books and comics that could’ve been a great transition. No offense to Bad Batch fans but it doesn’t interest me, nor Rogue Squadron.
Lo mismo pienso, Kathleen kennedy solo acepta a mujeres como guionistas y pelis pero rogue squadron, acolyte y mas se veen nefastas
In this economy, they barely broke even. Disney has dropped the ball on this beloved franchise. They have stained the legacy of star wars and I hope they can turn this around with the new movies coming up. Hope is all we have for us fans.
They didn't drop the ball. That would mean they made mistakes. There were no mistakes. It was all done intentionally.
Cope
@@Globalo45
Seeing Disney lose billions is a good coping mechanism
only way they can save it is to retcon the sequels and act as if palpatines whole cloning plan didnt happen
@@alexsaraceno6144Precisely. Anyone who doesn’t see at this point that the awful handling of Star Wars and Disney's other IPs was 100% deliberate on their end is a fool.
The fine print in the report said they excluded production costs on D+ shows and construction of Galaxy's Edge and Galactic Starcruiser
Classic collection is working! (Kinda)
Could be alot more but no they have agendas with the property.
Merchandise mostly
Great analysis, Theory 🌟 Double down on what the audience cherishes. Building in on where the Love is
Guys… Imagine a Hoth themed ICE BAR
It’s honestly not that much money, for being since 2012… They’re one of the largest companies in the world. It should be more than 10x that. Tesla’s annual revenue for 2023 was $96.773B for reference.
Theory i am so glad you are here to speak for all us fans.
I was at a Kohl's a few weeks back and I remember an older couple browsing the novelty shirts looking for a Grogu one. Star Wars' intake is more than just money from the hardcore fans.
It's Star Wars, regardless of quality it's going to make money.
It's so great that they didn't continue in Legends and ruined only their new timeline 👌
They woulda made so much money if the sequels weee good… shit planets, shit characters, no future after the sequels…. Barely any video games, weird shows. That 8 billion is nothin
WdW pro and Valiant Renagage went thru this claim and the math doesn't add up. This is DISNEY up to Disney things.... haha
Alternative facts on their end?
@achaudhari101 nah just disney leaving stuff out.
@@SillyCreations That depends on what is being left out.
Hey Theory, can you do a breakdown on the Acolyte trailer?
From what I've been able to gather, no more than $1.2 billion of this $12 figure was profit from the movies themselves. Since blu ray sales are atrophying and disney itself has minimized its physical media strategy that means the vast majority of the remaining $10.8 billion is from merchandise sales.
Honestly, hearing the fact that Palpatine becoming a Sith Lord, because he is an incel and got broken up with is both hilarious and completely within his character
Sheev and Plagueis fell in love with each other but Sheev's dad didn't approve of it because he's racist to aliens
@@dereklopez9060 i’m talking about what George Lucas said about his Star Wars underworld series. That’s apparently Holte Palpatine turn to the dark side in his vision.
I would love to see the spreadsheet for that. Intuitively, it seems unlikely that they turned a note worthy amount of profit on Star Wars media. Also, having a lot of Star Wars shows be a part of a streaming service also provides a lot of room to play around with the numbers. I suspect the vast majority of that profit, if accurate, is made from merchandise and llicensing deals, and not necessarily from core of the Star Wars franchise, such as movies and shows.
VADER EPISODE 2 👀
No amount of money in the world can save them from their own aspirations🤷♂️
$12 billion is the correct number.
Doubt a lot of that is actually profit. If Star Wars was doing fine then that ridiculous Starcruiser hotel would still be running strong and all the dozen+ projects would’ve been out by now. You also wouldn’t be hearing about studios straight up canceling games based on the “moneymaking ip” now would ya?
love your channel bro , dont always agree with you , but much like yourself its been really hard seeing star wars pulled through a ringer
I think a major problem with how they merchandise, is they only want to sell toys of their newest film they have coming out. Lucas era Star Wars you got toys from every era, Ewoks were on sale right next to Wato, you also had EU characters like Dash Rendar. But Disney doesn't want you thinking about anything but their latest film or show. So they hamstring their own sales. It was almost impossible to find classic or Prequel era Star Wars figures for my nephews a few years back. Because all you could find were Poe, Rose Tiko, and a bunch of Snokes.
