I asked him if I can share the email and info and will hopefully share that soon. Unfortunately, the news is that the Rad meter will not be produced. He told me that regardless of the fan base, the retailers were not interested after the 76 problems. Also, it was hard to create due to the reasons I had mentioned. For this reason, I think it is time to move forward in making our own. I think we have very inventive people here and we can make something we can all do. I will be trying to collaborate with a few of our friends here to do this and hopefully share more later. Thanks.

Link here: learn.sparkfun.com/tutorials/hookup-guide-for-the-sparkfun-redboard-artemis-nano/all It's really small, has integrated bluetooth, microphone, lipo charging circuit, and usb C! It's Arduino compliant too, and I ordered it with a QWIIC motor driver breakout board to see if I can cobble up some rad meter action with a small motor to be driven by it. You can connect several sensors etc. to it too via QWIIC connectors, so no soldering required! Link here for supported breakout boards: www.sparkfun.com/qwiic#products Since it has Bluetooth connectivity, it might also work wirelessly with the Blackberry. As it has an USB-C and LiPo charging circuit integrated, you can just use an extension cable to move the port to a better place of your liking, while not having to touch the batteries for the board. I gotta admit, what you said about absorbing a bunch of content about that thing you're really into hit home. I've got my Pip-boy boxed up still because I'd like to give it a repaint before putting it together, so I've been watching a lot of videos on it in the meantime. Seeing the ingenuity that creators like you put into these things is really inspiring, and it's served as a jumping off point for me to look into all sorts of DIY stuff like painting, mechanics, and electronics. What's funny is that my friend got me a Pip Boy 2000... Like, a few years back I forgot when. I just found it again and it's still not assembled. The box was only opened once and I only took out the stickers and construction manual, that was it. xD This puts me in a great position to do this! Although, I probably won't be using the Blackberry, despite Android accessibility being ideal. I'm researching alternatives and in the design stage of the project though, watching what may work best. I have had a Raspberry Pi for about 3 years now or something for school for my BSEET (Just graduated). So I figured I will incorporate that into this project and see what may be possible! It was heavy unfortunately so I made a micro edition using a 1.5 inch Sony B&W CRT Viewfinder from a 1985 Sony Studio camera. Sounds good. Did you see both videos? The third Is about to come out. The only problem with metal, is that it would be much heavier than the one that I made and unfortunately that when I made is very heavy.
Im a blacksmith and i know certain metals are heavy and some are light, if you take aluminum its easy to smelt down, if you add the right ratio of copper you will get a lighter but stronger metal. i did an experiment making a blade, and in the game it is infact heavy, because they use a certain type of steel.

9:30 so far, I've fit a pi zero and momentary button in the top panel for power. I've got an HDMI ribbon cable that is an almost identical match for the dummy cable that connects top panel to screen housing. Coiled telephone wire to connect to radio module, and rotary encoder for radio knob, 12 position switch on the side of the rad meter, as well as momentary switches for the three buttons. Holotape has just enough space for a lipo or li-ion battery. I keep getting hung up on the screen. I don't need touch because I've implemented tactile switches, but a 4:3 4.5" screen is challenging to source. I would have loved to disassemble the flickering screen module and wire the intereupter and smack feature into the backlight of the screen. I feel like I'm like 70% of the way there hardware wise, then would have to figure out some programming in Python to make it function.
Programming is not the hardest part. I think the hardware is. For me, there was nothing that could do all the things I wanted if it wasn't a chipset manufactured for that purpose to fit in that tight space. I also wanted to use the holotape area for a holotape, which is what mine did in the end, as well as .working Geiger counter. I have made the switches work again for the Pipboy 2000, so I can control the screen with the switch, without sacrificing too much space in the working Geiger counter area. Did you see video 3 yet? We have the new Pipboy 3000 we are giving instructions for, so nothing doesn't fit inside the individual modules, but everything works. . You may find a screen that is Pi compatible that is much older. I found one that belongs to a 2013 portable TV. It was exactly to scale.
@@YourGeekFix that's a great lead! I'll look into the portable TV screens next. Watched part 3 earlier today, good content! Makes me less intimidated about mounting the screen

Thank you The Joney. You are awesome! I think 4 was the culmination to me. Bigger world and story, without the hupe of 76. I do like the VR of 76 though. New Vegas was good too. What is your favorite The Joney? Do you have a pip-boy?
@@YourGeekFix I love all fallouts games but if had to choose it would be New Vegas, I love the story and that game had such a unique atmosphere and soundtrack... I'm also a big fan of the ranger helmet!
Kudos for your build. Mad respect. You learn more when you fail in comparison to when you suceed. Working around the limitations and finding a solution it´s never easy. I would love something similar to a Pipboy in real life, even if it doesnt look like one. Im more interested in the practical aspects and applications of a wrist mounted computer. A cellphone is a good starting point, but in some aspects is way too advanced and in others limited (battery life comes to mind or the lack of certain enviromental sensors).
In April I contacted the wand company about the rad counter and got this response. “Hi Malachi, Thanks so much for your email. We have been working on the sensor module, and would love to make it. Unfortunately we don’t have enough commitment from our retailers at the moment, so any plans are on hold. We really hope that we are able to make it for the near future. Sorry not to have any better news at this for you. Kindest Charlotte” after that I gave up hope for it
Charlotte is awesome. The company is working on the tricorder from star trek. If you watch the interview I did with Chris Barnardo, he discusses all this. They may revisit it at a much later date.
Ok. That intro was amazing,!! Congratulations on almost 11K when you get 1mil don’t forget me lol 😂 i just reached 3k! 😄 don’t forget about the wall.e lol. Also can you open an instagram? Keep up the amazing job!
Thanks wolfpackYT. I haven't forgotten the Wall.e project. Congrats on 3k. I haven't been the best at keeping up on the social media, but I will look into doing instagram.
I can't believe I just discovered these both of your videos and your channel tonight and I'm just shocked!! considering all the factors and small little things you went through to get it working, I think rooting the device and getting a unrestricted version of android could work better, especially considering its all custom anyway, though I'm not knowledgeable enough into modding android and don't know what kind of issues you would have with such or if you would be sacrificing stability
your main issue with the pie being too tall and the display module taking up too much space could be solved by removing 90% of the IO and directly wiring the Pie's screen to the IO pin area, but that would require a bunch of complex soldering, would be hella cool tho.
Next problem is finding a screen that is square and exactly that size. Surprisingly hard to impossible to find. Also, hard to find one that will work with the pi. Next, the battery is difficult. Remember, my challenge is that it also all needed to fit behind the screen... Battery, module, and screen. Easy with smart phone tech.
hey man i am thinking about getting a real military grade geiger counter it's big as a key and it fits. so i thought to unmake it and cover the circuits in lead tape, and when the "rad counter" comes out i will split it. because the counter is two seprit parts one is the counter and the other is the actual counter so i planed to hot wire the meter to the military grade geiger counter.
A friend of mine detected loads of radiation on tiles in the hardware store here in germany... thats both disturbing and interesting. Thanks for the vid
Kind of like what is mentioned in the video, I couldn't use the same strategies, because I cannot sell a modified device. If you are wanting to dress up a model, I think you should jump into doing it. Happy to consult. I promise it will only turn out to be something you love. Good luck. I'll be excited to hear about it.
The meaning of life? Is the sum of 42! Thought everybody knowed that Plus you aughta reveal that real technology to the Game developer team For Fallout! That would make for a spectacular video
You know the more you said that the problem was space the more I think about how I kept telling my friends the design wouldn't work in the game because they were probably using a cathode ray tube for the screen and that it would be nearly impossible to get one to fit inside
@@ksukat87 I think it was the S1. The first rounded screen, very large, and worked independent of your phone for calls long before apple or anyone else tried it.

“There upgrade modules you can buy for it” Well in theory anyway. Because when they launched they instantly sold out and most of those sales reappeared on places like eBay for a 6billion% markup. So unless you’re bill gates it’s just a nice idea.

@@YourGeekFix Just finished watching part III. I was impressed by each iteration and the improvements made as you learned from your mistakes- which I agree is a critical step in the process of making anything great. Honestly don't know what else you could do for improvements, since you proved the rotating clock/date was just not realistically possible to make without an enormous budget to get it past whatever hurdles that arose. if those Power Armor helmets weren't recalled I'd ponder whether it's possible to make your Pip-Boy communicate with a type of interface in the helmet, maybe another raspberry pi with screen mirroring used to send the Pip-Boy onto a screen inside? Regardless, subbed and looking forward to what you engineer/mod next!! 😁
i am appalled at your lack of subscribers. when i watched these videos, i went to subscribe, expecting you to have a good 500k at least, more likely 1 mil. but to only see 16k??? these are such high quality high effort videos! its amazing how much you do for them!
You mentioned a AAA battery device to use possibly in lieu of the AAA alkaline batteries that would allow a modder to externally recharge power for the FM radio mod kit from Wand. You did not mention where to find it or what the kit is called? You provided pictures of it however. Why didn't you use this mod again? Thanks
I use the Gerson Power Supply three AAA battery. It was around $10. Only one battery carries a charge, the other two are just for completing the circuit. I am a little leery the radio may burn out being on all the time. with that particular set. Another option is the old three AAA battery that is lithium ion that was made for cameras 10 years ago or more. That one would charge and could be taken on the go.
I mean you would have to desolder alot of connections while hard soldering all the ones that are needed with wires (similar to how ben heck builds portable consoles and routes the wiring). Not to mention you would have to have a board that doesnt get too hot and require thermal cooling. I think its doable though plus ill be damned if I dont get a pi in one of those. I would probably have to rig the case together outside of its original build. Anyways what you have done is impressive/really cool. Im not sure I even have the time to do everything I want :/
Understood. The 4 b cannot compete with the processor and do all the things this does. However, if you are determined to do it, you can. Sounds like you have the know how.
No funding. One week to film and another to edit. In this case we was my family and zap wizard loaned his Geiger counter clips. I did all the effects and filming.

Planning on September. Bethesda, the wand company, and gamestop are involved. There is frame animation. A full size piece to the fallout set. And of course, the pipboy with geigercounter. Thanks for asking.
Galaxy S watch with fallout interface. It was great, first watch to make calls without needing a phone and had a rounded screen. Huge for playing video.
I just found this video, and was pretty disappointed to hear they cancelled the Electromagnetic Meter (which is what the upgrade would actually have been). I still take issue with the idea of 'If we gave it any real functionality, we'd have to make it interact with the game'... I don't agree with that. At all. I feel if they made a fully working game-accurate Pipboy, it would sell just fine as a Stand-alone device. Especially if it actually goes for Game Accuracy (as in every menu is 1:1 with the game, without assigning unneeded functionality to areas that don't need it like with the Bluetooth Pipboy 3000) with SOME Bluetooth tech in it (so you can connect your favorite UA-cam Fallout Playlist to it, or Fallout Radio) to expand said functionality just a bit... but it doesn't need to interact with the game, honestly. Sell it as a pure Cosplay item.
Chris addresses this in our interview and video 3. I show hw to make a working Geiger counter, clock, and holotape easy and cheep in video 3 coming very soon
Any chance you would revisit this topic wuth the Spirit of halloween pipboy 3000? I'm looking at useing a raspberry pi and a screen in the pipboy 3000.
Soon. So, here is the update. The upgrades have been made, including a real working Geiger counter and clock. @@YourGeekFix just watched, found a screen for $15, now the challenge will be making the connections work between it and the pi zero. Thanks!

Thanks so much for your email.
We have been working on the sensor module, and would love to make it. Unfortunately we don’t have enough commitment from our retailers at the moment, so any plans are on hold.
We really hope that we are able to make it for the near future.

@@WolfPackYT Thanks.
Ok
your main issue with the pie being too tall and the display module taking up too much space could be solved by removing 90% of the IO and directly wiring the Pie's screen to the IO pin area, but that would require a bunch of complex soldering, would be hella cool tho.
Love these pip boy vids and the little sketches at the start
You should see video 3! Major production!

hey man i am thinking about getting a real military grade geiger counter it's big as a key and it fits. so i thought to unmake it and cover the circuits in lead tape, and when the "rad counter" comes out i will split it. because the counter is two seprit parts one is the counter and the other is the actual counter so i planed to hot wire the meter to the military grade geiger counter.
Do you have a link where you got it?

@@ModernOddity728 thanks! I didn't know the helmets were recalled.
