Oddly enough (and I imagine you will never see this comment) I heard an interview today discussing the difference between jazz and swing. This is all swing. Apparently most swing is a subset of jazz, but not all of it. Some swing has nothing to do with jazz. One person was the Plank Chair of Physics at Oxford (God knows why he has spent years analyzing the impact of various sounds on human ears, but apparently that counts as high level theoretical physics. Who knew?) The other person was the senior executive of a NYC based world famous jazz association and a professional saxophonist. They actually agreed on every single mechanical aspect of the difference between jazz and swing! (Emphasis on downbeats and that kind of technical precision) Then they agreed on what "good music" was. It was a hell of an interview... if you care, it was part of Science Friday on NPR (American "national public radio").
