High Gain Boss Katana and Nextone vs Mesa/Boogie Rectifier

  • I needed to record some guitar parts today and thought it would be fun to do a comparison between a Boss Katana mk1, a Boss Nextone, and a Mesa/Boogie rectifier. On paper, the two Boss amps shouldn't be able to compete with the Mesa Boogie, oh how wrong I was. The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

Thanks, Paul. I am the owner of KATANA 100 and I love her, I also like NEXTONE and at the same time I have never been a fan of MESA/BOOGIE. But I must admit that MESA/BOOGIE sounded more fuller, which is very cool! Whereas NEXTONE and KATANA were emphasized in the middle of the range. I liked the song!

Yeah I definitely feel the Nextone and Katana held up. Cheers for the comment.

Wow, amazing how well the Boss amps hold up. I have a Katana MKI 100 and MKII Artist - I find they REALLY come alive with a booster in front (my favorite is a Wampler Tumnus).

recorded in a mix, you don't need to use expensive amps. there's so much post production that can turn any tone into a monster. i tried a boss Katana as a back up to my mesa single rec for live gigs, but couldn't feel/hear an inspirational tone. that's where the mesa blows away the little boss. i don't record much, and just need a great, plug in and play tone for live, with incredible reliability. this is why i've stuck with mesa for 25+ years. great show case of what you can do in a recording situation.

I really tried not to listen with my eyes, but yeah the rectifier sounded so full while the Katana also cut through. Nice song btw!

Nice demo. I find it interesting people feel a need to say one is better than the other... If enough time is spent tweaking them they'll be very close and that's the key takeaway. As a bonus I would've liked to see the Katana and Nextone run through the UA box as well so the speaker was out of the equation... or at least through their dedicated USB interfaces.
Bottom line... I can make them all sound bad and make none of them sound as good as Paul!

The Nextone and Katana sat in the mix better. The Mesa has the fullness needed for live stage work with less instrumentation.

Proud owner of a katana 100mk2 and have been looking at you tips and tricks and love it! I was just wondering about metal tones like children of bodom with alexis high gain soloing/riffing and so on. How close can you actualy get with just the katana it self? I know its not your favorite territory but asking anyways 😂

Great video Paul. All 3 amps sounded great. I have a Katana 50 mkII (which I bought after watching a bunch of your videos)...I do feel the amp has great tone and cheap as chips. The song sounded really nice and your playing is as always fantastic. By the way, how well do you think the katana takes dirt pedals up front? Thanks.
