  • Rolex Submariner vs GMT Master II - 116610 vs 116710 - Federico Talks Watches
    In this episode of Federico Talks Watches I review the subtle difference between the Rolex Submariner and the GMT Master II. Things like movement, bracelet, bezel, GMT function and water resistance all come in to play. The submariner and GMT master also appreciate/depreciate differently. What is the better everyday watch?

    Keep in mind you can use the GMT's bezel as a minute timer too, just consider each printed number as five minutes.

    I'd take the GMT Master II (though I prefer the 16710 to the newer one). The big reason for me is that, while the Sub is an excellent diver, there are so many very competent dive watches out there that I can find one that suits my needs for far less, while the GMT Master II with the home hour hand jump feature is a relatively unique watch that I'd struggle to find in any other brand.

      The Omega Planet ocean GMT has that feature too, the jumping hour hand. That plus the 60 Hours power reverse, 15.000 Gauss rating, METAS certification (on the new one), fully ceramic two-tone bezel, glide lock clasp...

    The glidelock clasp should be standard on all of the steel Rolex in my opinion.

    I always laugh when people cite the 300m resistance w/o context... 334m is the world record... Your watch will be fine in the shower.

    • @ZCT808
      @ZCT808 6 років тому +3

      Quite right, and also there is almost no non-drowning scenario in which any amateur diver would ever venture beyond 55m; this would be considered very extreme for any non-pro diver. I'd go so far as to say that no one who ever reads this comment has ever or will ever break their GMT watch by diving too deeply with it on (assuming it is reasonably maintained to factory specs).

      Is the fact that they can build a watch with that resistance....

    I went with the GMT Master II BLNR because 1) the bezel, it’s beautiful, 2) the GMT function, very useful, 3) the contrasting finish on the bracelet. I know some dont like the polished links, but I like the combo of both.

  • @alwaysforward28
    @alwaysforward28 8 років тому +8

    This was a tough one, but I ended up getting the sub no date. I love the symmetrical dial of the no date, and I felt that the polished center links of the gmt ii would attract scratches. Nice vid!

    • @ZCT808
      @ZCT808 6 років тому

      Sure if you look closely you're going to see hairline scratches on the polished center links, worse in parts. But under normal use, just looking at your wrist, these don't exactly jump out at you, you really have to be examining the watch close up.
      Say you're driving on a cloudy day and look at your hand on the steering wheel, the polished center links do a great job of providing an extra dimension to the look of the watch. And clearly Rolex is a fan, choosing to put this on most of their high end or precious metal sport watches.
      Bottom line, I don't find it to be an issue at all, and appreciate the extra and different reflective properties of the bracelet in a variety of light conditions.

    Great vid Fed! I would argue that the value depends on whether you're talking about the BLNR GMT or the plain black GMT. The BLNR GMT is holding its value much more than the Sub. The Batman is very hard to find and seems to be more exclusive.

    I'm often timing things, so for me, the bezel on the Sub is more useful. If I want to know what time it is on the east coast, or in London I just do the simple mental arithmetic and add 3 or 8 hours, respectively.

    If you're a Rolex aficionado, then I think a Rolex diver is a must. I made a special effort to get a 14060M almost hot off the line, Parachrom Bleu and all, a few months before the 114060 was introduced at Basel.
    When Rolex introduced the BLRO in WG only, I "settled" for a BLNR, sight unseen, and boy did I get the surprise of my life. The GMTII is a very versatile watch that I think most people would find more useful than a Sub, SD, or DSSD and not only that, but the BLNR bezel is just a sight to behold, changing as it does in varying light.
    I also have a 114270 and a 116200-63600 because, well, Rolex people should have a DJ and the Explorer was my first and it was literally love at first sight and my heart still flutters when I put it on after having run through my watch rotation, which usually takes several months.
    These are probably the only Rolex watches I'll ever own, as I'm well into my 7th decade and because they pretty much fill the bill and even though I love the new SS Daytona, it's too expensive for my tastes. I could have bought one with the money I spent on other Swiss watches just last year, but I didn't know it was coming and there's just something about spending five figures on one watch that makes me balk.
    I should also mention that I discovered Tudor when my AD started selling them last year, so I now have the North Flag and the THC with the black dial. I don't need one, but the BB36 is really tugging at me and if it looks as good in person as it does in pictures, I'll fold in a heartbeat.
    Nice videos, by the way, so I subscribed.

    GMT isn't as common and is more versatile - brilliant for travelling, 100m diver watch with trip lock crown. The easy link is enough unless you're a professional diver. By the way, in UK, GMT Master holds its value very well - they increase in price. I like the Sub...and when I buy one, I'll only wear it with a Pheonix Nato strap.

    Well explained. If I was purchasing brand new, I would go for the 114060 (no date). Pre owned it would have to be the GMT master II. Cannot justify the Sub Date which is also too copied and faked. Even though the Blancpain FF was the original "diver" I believe.

    GMT is my favorite complication due to being the most practical after the date one and before power reserve IMHO. As I travel often tend using GMT hence always choosing watches supporting GMT/Word traveler functionality. SUB as much as it is iconic has less to offer. Higher water resistance does not have too much practical sense. So - GMT all the way!

  • @ZCT808
    @ZCT808 8 років тому

    I think this is a fair comparison. If you do travel not only is the GMT function useful, but remember to change the timezone on a Sub, even if you are not bothered with tracking home time, you have to stop the movement, reset the time. Whereas the GMT keeps on ticking when you change the local time zone (the hour hand).
    I used to have the original Planet Ocean and then the 8500 Planet Ocean, and Omega added that quick set hour hand on the latter, which was so handy.
    While the Sub may have the slight edge in resale value, the BLNR is doing amazing in that department. Even the gray dealers are offering no discount on it right now, whereas the Sub and regular GMT gets a discount.
    I might also argue that there are more Subs out there than GMT, so when you come to sell it you might be selling it against a bunch of other people selling the exact same watch.
    As a constant traveller, the GMT function won out for me. If I never travelled, I'd go Sub probably.

    I considered buying both and went for the GMT LN first. Now that I own this I dont see a reason to get a submariner for anything other than for wearing it at the beach/wakeboarding/surfing and stuff like that, but I just cant get myself to wear an 8k watch as a sports watch like that because I know I'm an idiot and will damage it somehow. I decided to buy a cheap homage (steinhart ocean one), slap it on a rubber strap and use that as my toolwatch without having to worry about it the slightest bit. It's not a sub, but definitely suitable and it wears great imo.

    Love both watches, you can't go wrong with either. I own both ver. of subs - pre ceramic and ceramic and love them both equally. I think Submariner makes a better daily beater watch than the GMT Master because of the GMT function that you would actually really need only when you travel. So if you really have to pick one watch as your daily watch the Sub makes a better choice IMO. However, if you can afford them both then the GMT Master is a wonderful watch to have, a true beauty and a classic. Thank you for the video. How about a comparison between Omega SMP and a Submariner? A truly iconic battle of the dive watches.

    With economies of scale and the fact that they use the same case how much money are Rolex saving by not having the GMT Master water resistant to 300m? To me it seems stupid that they don't. I would make the watches identical except of the movement, extra hand and bezel.

    • @JungleEddie
      @JungleEddie 6 років тому

      As for my choice, I am much more likely to time an event than to track a separate timezone. I do have family one hour different but if I can't figure that out in my head I shouldn't be allowed a mechanical watch. That said, I think both are too small for me and too expensive. I currently wear an Orient Ray II which is a bit on the small side for my 8-8.25 inch wrist. I wouldn't want to drop down 1.5mm unless I was also losing the rotating bezel.

    The GMT Master is a much more useful watch than the Sub. Effectively 3 time zones, bi-directional bezel, and thinner case (less weight). The GMT also wears more comfortably because it's not as thick as the Sub. Don't care about the polished centre links - I think they look ugly and would be a decision changer for me if I were to look to purchase a GMT. As for the Sub, the Glidelock system may be useful, but to I don't think many people would need to adjust the bracelet very often, you set it once and then forget about it, (unless you happen to gain (or lose) a lot of weight. I have been wearing the same watch for over 10 years, and I never once had to adjust the clasps to enlarge or reduce the bracelet.

    GMT for sure, I'm an office guy who is constantly in contact with folks in Asia and I set my GMT hand to Japan time on my Squale. The only way I'd get the sub over the GMT is if it was the Bruce Banner one.

    I own both watches. In my opinion the GMT is a superior watch.
    Now that the GMT has the triplock crown they are pretty much the same watch, but the GMT has a way better movement with a super useful complication.

    the 116710. not as common & great bang for buck. can't time bbq as well however. if it only had the sub bracelet...heaven, as i'm not a shiny center link guy. i do have a DSSD and am just nutso over it's bracelet. you mentioned the pepsi. weren't you buying a replacement with the proceeds? don't you dare pay back taxes and a seiko instead!

    Nice... I bought the Sub... Because of the 300mtrs which is I can't really use to that depth even though I'm a diver but it's cool to know my watch could do farther down... And the glide lock... No tools requires man!!!

      I was in Vancouver Canada recently, and drove up to Whistler. On the way back I was standing at a look out point, and noticed the height to sea level was 320m. I thought to myself, WOW, that's a long way down. I could not imagine diving even 10% of that depth!
      I suspect less than 1% of Submariner owners ever dive deeper than a GMT could go.
      I do love the glidelock clasp though.

      +Gerald Dy I don't think you can go wrong. I use the time zone feature several times a month. So had to lean that way. But if I didn't travel like I do the Sub would be awesome too.

    Hello Federico ! Greetings from Romania
    I currently own a AP Royal Oak Yellow Gold White Dial 39mm & an AP Royal Oak Offshore Rose Gold 42mm Rubberclad.I want to add an everyday sport watch but i want it to fit into my collection.My toughts are Platinum Daytona ( but i don t really like the brown on the dial ),116619 WG Submariner ( i think the blue is too blue),Submariner 116610 i love it but the brushed bracelet makes it too raw,GMT Batman (it looks kind of like a toy),and my favourite is Platinum Day Date 40 ( i really like this one but it isn t too sporty)
    Overall I am considering a white coloured Rolex ( steel,wg,platinum ) to fit the collection.Preferably with a touch of baby blue.I would like to know what would you choose and what other ideas do you have. love your channel
    Thank you in advance,
    Andrei Orban
