- Paul Hanson takes you through a guitar players view of looping with the Boss RC-30 Loop Station. He describes how to set it up, what the buttons do what, external pedals to use with it and he demos a couple songs. Toward the end of the video Paul takes you through a song with a voice over explanation of each pedal press.
Front and back panels are explained and how to set up an empty loop then save it into a preset so it will be ready when you select a preset patch.
Paul also goes through looping basics, getting different sounds and looping vocals for harmonies.
Very nice explanation, i bought i digitech JamMan Delay, and its way worse than this pedal. I´m giving it back just to buy this one. Cheers!!
Does double stomp mute the loop and double tapping again brings the entire loop back?
Hello, thanks, I have recorded water stream on track 1 and birds sound at track 2. for 2 different episodes in the song. How can I swiftly change from 1 to 2 and from 2 to 1 track. Any Tips?
I am asking for help. I am 58 and not computer literate. Would you please make a quick video showing how to add wave files from a computer to the RC-30? If possible how to add Stereo wave files to the RC-30? Do stereo files split between track 1 and 2 or can both tracks be stereo files?
Thanks Paul revisiting the idea of a looper! Now these are out of production. Looking for a used one! A decade later you are still relevant!!!!
Are you a Roland-Boss salesman or do you work for Roland planet, Bye the way I’m a big fan of boss products
I'm having a terrible time getting the right speed on Tap tempo. It will go in between the beats per minute that I want but its either too fast or too slow. sometimes I can get it right or close but it takes a while. I have had this for 4 months. Someone please help.
How do I change from verse to chorus or is that not possible?
im unable to access your website Paul..
Thank you - nice presentation!
Paul... Your video helped me to buy a RC30... I only have one question... I'd like to send the guitar to my guitar amp... And the voice to another amp/PA... How can I separate the outputs?
Hi, sorry, you can't separate the vocals and guitar if they are both plugged into the looper. This is the way many looper experts set up, then they can create vocal harmonies and loop vocals.
When I'm looping, I don't use a guitar amp. I get all my guitar tones from a guitar processor inserted before the amp, then I go out of the looper into my PA. My vocals come out of the looper also so any distortion after the looper will add distortion to everything coming out of the looper. If you use a guitar amp for looping I recommend setting the amp clean and getting any distortion before the looper.
On the other hand, you could always plug the mic directly into the PA and then guitar into the looper and amp. But then you can't loop vocals. That's the only way to separate vocals and guitars. Hmm... I guess you could use an A/B switch on the mic to switch it from either direct to PA or direct to looper? Good luck!
This is the best instruction I've seen so far concerning the Rc30. A very helpful video.
Thx man!
Hi Paul
Can i connect any type of effects pedal to the RC 30? i.e the Line 6 Pod.
Will this allow me to switch to different multi effects without it affecting the drums? Or does it have to be a Boss/ME/GT?
Your soonest response will be appreciated.
Yo Andreas,
You can put any effect in front of a looper!! The drums will not be affected unless you put effect after the looper. And does not have to be a Boss pedal. Line 6 makes cool stuff it'll work fine. Pod is great, can't remember if it has an octave effect for bass though!
so all i need is like a million different things. awesome
Does it have 7/8 and 3/4 drum loops? If not am I able to create a loop on my computer and use it on the RC-30 - please clarify how will I import my loop on the RC30 if possible. Thank you
The RC-30, 50 and 300 will do 3/4. Not 7/8
Great video! Thank you. Do you know if you can connect an ipad to the Boss RC30 and use garageband?
Hi Shelly, the USB feature is for importing and exporting .WAV files. So... if you have, for example, a song or section of a song in Garage band, highlight that section you want to go into the RC-30, then bounce it to disc as a .Wav. (Make sure it's an even number of bars if you want it to loop "in time")
In other words take all the tracks you want and save them as a stereo .WAV on your desktop. Then with a USB cable plug the RC 30 into the computer and follow what the manual describes on page 15. "Writing Individual WAV Files from Your Computer To the RC-30's Phrase Memory".
Be sure to read the manual and follow the instructions because you don't want to erase something in a memory that you want to keep.
Good Luck!
PH
SUPER,Tank You
My mic was plugged into a Boss VE-20 Vocal Processor then plugged into the RC-30's mic input. I did this for both loops at the top and at the end. The VE-20 was set to double my voice making it fatter and add some 'verb and delay to cover up my not too good singing.
Fabulous -thank you
I liked the clarity and humility of your vib Paul. Thanks
Thx man.
+Paul Hanson Really nice, Paul, thanks a lot!
+Paul Bergin I did too!
perhaps the sound needs to be clean?..and use a pedal for grunt, instead of amp?..
Yep the amp needs to be clean! When I do looping gigs I use a VG-99 plugged into my looper pedal and then direct into a PA. If you plug a guitar into a looper then into an amp the amp needs to be super clean! All distortion and other effects must be before the looper. If you are playing a bass and using drum sounds too a guitar amp is not good at reproducing that stuff… that's the problem with using a amp. I used an amp at low volume and very clean for this demo.
You said you weren't a great singer, but I disagree. your singing style was neutral but that's why I liked it. too many popular singers is the music industry have invasive annoying voices that just muddy up and blot the backbeat and subtleties to what's really happening instrumentally with the track. Your singing had a comfortable pace that suited the song well.
Best I've seen so far,,and I have you in a loop with 49 other demos. Yours is by far and above the others to understand. I watched a few before you, then 8 more after, came back to you. Thank you for making this easier to understand!
Many thanks ~ JVaughn Davis.
The distorted guitar sounds really clean in this video, even with 3 layers. I have a Katana mkII 100 2x12 amp and plug this pedal into the effects loop in the back. When I try to layer distorted rhythm guitar and harmonized leads, it gets really muddy. I'm pretty sure I have everything set up correctly in effects chain (Effects are built into amp)...any advice?
Have you figured it out? My setup is different, have a katana 50, so no effects loop. I was expecting some coloration and little loss of tone quality after going through the RC30, but when playing with distortion/overdrive, the loops sound pretty bad and muddy, as you described.
@@akiratheastronaut I found that not having extreme reverb on helped a bit...and I switched the effects chain to chain 3 in tone studio. The leads sound fine, its just when you get into heavier rhythm stuff it's hard to distinguish. Still doesn't sound ideal.
Nice one my man. Real concise. All killer, no filler. For a real cro-magnon player, i have a 15w valve head,
2x12, out front = wah, overdrives THEN boss. And in fx loop delay and
reverb. Where do I place loopstion if I want to record with all, or
none, of the aboves effects as a rhythm, THEN play on top with all, or
none, of the aboves effects. Cant find a definitive answer so thought
would ask someone who shows explamalary skill. Great tone. Hope you, or
someone, can help. Seen that Paul Hanson asked you the same question.
Place it at the last, after the reverb in the effects loop. This should work, depending on the levels that your fx loop operates.
Loopers in most situations always go last in the chain.
Paul you have this kind of charming/charisma that i could watch this any time again. I buyed the RC30 to record my own and self jamming. My idea isnt exactly for a Guitar jamming but an accordion and some another analogs instruments like bongos, güiro, clave, shaker than i could perform a typical lateinamerican rythmus. For that i buyed an sm57 micro too to obtain the best of the record. Do you think this will work for me when im complete "unpluged"? Thank you for your great video
Thx Rodrigo for the compliment. I think your idea is great.
I think I know what you mean by unplugged, no electric instruments?
You will still need will need some kind of amp or small PA to plug the looper into. The SM 57 will plug into the RC-30, then plug the RC 30 into a powered speaker. If you don't have a PA I think the mic pre in the looper should amplify the mic enough to go direct into a powered speaker. But you should try that it out in a music store before you buy.
I like the speakers below when I am doing an acoustic kind of gig, they are pretty cheap and sound good.

@@ShredGuitarOnline, bookmarked your blog ~ tons of stuff to read there
I'm having issues with phase..one guitar takes over from the other like 2 guitars in one amp..anyone have this problem?
Nope!
The looper outs have to go into a super clean amp or PA. All the distortion must be coming before the looper. Especially if you are adding bass and drums. Imagine a drum set and bass coming out of a distorted amp.
I'm so confused about this loop pedal. I just got mine in, but I've seen so many videos of people doing covers of songs with this pedal and they do exactly what I want to do.
I've seen people make a loop, which is a short loop and they put stuff on top of that, which I know how to do. Then they create another loop, however, this loop is longer. I can't seem to do that, even if I switch tracks. Any help?
The RC-50 and RC-300 have a mode called "single mode". I use the RC-50 in single mode for gigs. In single mode each of the three loops run only one loop at a time... and I can set the three loops to different lengths. Say, loop 1 for four bars and loop 2 eight bars etc. Running in single mode is not possible on the RC-30 or RC-3. The RC-30 has two separate loops but as soon as you set the length of one, the other loop is set to that length too. This is called Multi mode, on the RC-50 and 300. In multi mode all the loops run parallel... so when you set the length of one, the other loop will run parallel to it, at the same length.
Hope that helps!
PH
Paul Hanson Thanks for the reply. However, I am almost certain that the RC-30 is able to do this. Watch the video with Ed Sheeran I mentioned in my earlier comment. You can see multiple times in the video that he is using the RC-30, but he has two different length tracks
your a nice guy
I would love to hear the tune created in this video replace the standard public announcements at train stations!
Thanks Paul, sorry for the late reply.
Regards
Bryan
Do you know what an acoustic guitar would be like going thru this pedal. or even better an acoustic guitar version.
I believe Ed Sheeran uses this pedal on some videos here on youtube, it works great. I've just bought a used one myself for acoustic playing and singing :)
Adam Sjöberg mine will arrive in a few days , how did you find yours , did you run into any bugs or issues?
Hi Rany. Mine worked nice. It's however more tricky to get into than what you might think. It takes practice. I found myself not using it that much and I'm after a more organic sound when I write, so I have allready sold it again. Hope you find more use for yours! It's really great if you feel it's your thing!
What monitor do you plug the output from RC30 in live performance? It is through a mixer/pa directly or to a guitar amp? Even your doing vocals?
Thanks for your advice paul, sorry for late reply. Works great last in loop, very clear reproduction. However, when i use my attenuator (an old school one, works lovely, between amp to cab but only playing when playing no loop pedal) the looped recording sounds awful, cuts out when playing over a loop, flubby, mush really. However when attenuator is not engaged, the loop pedal works brilliantly but too loud for home practice with a nice pushed amp tone. I know there is a lot of dark arts around fx loops, and i suspect my loop is probably not high end. Any advice welcome
Ha! My main question: If your a guitarist, with the normal gazillion guitar amps, but not a PA in sight...Would plugging a mike into the looper cause my amp to emit expensive blue smoke or sound like someone on helium.... Answered at last ~ Tenk Hue velly much. But you answer that and much more, hope to see more of your clips.
Paul....you are the best I have seen. I like the way you teach/explain. When friends ask me about the RC 30 I say to them...."have you met Paul Hanson yet?"
Hello Paul, thanks for making this common sense high quality video about the Boss Loop Station. It's the best of any out there, I can vouch for that. I got one of these as a present, and now I can make some fun sounds with it, hopefully.
No problem. It was fun, rock on!!!
How do you record and playback instantly without overdubbing?
Very good vibe from you bro, enjoyed your video. I don't have this pedal yet but think it might be a good addition to my pedal board..
This was so informative! How do you delete the second track though? When I record on the second track, if I don't like it, to get rid of it I seem to have to delete all my previous sounds from track 1...which is very annoying
Whic Boss your used for live Vocal loop in a song at the end of these video ?
Great video demo! It was very well organized, thorough, and your explanations were easy to understand!
Great Demo. Well paced, and explained.Your experience as a music instructor shines through here. Thanks so much. It solidified my decision to make the purchase. I left it noting that Boss should have simply included the FS6 otherwise in a live application the performer will have to stoop down and find buttons (in the dark) to change channels/initiate FX. Otherwise a decent pedal. A fade out option would have been great too like with the RC20XL.
Helpful video! One question though: is it also compatible with a foot switch/adapter of a different brand (not Boss)?
thank you so much appreciate it you're the only one on UA-cam who so far gave the best demo. thanks once again.....!!!!!
Excellent work! Ditto on all 3 comments! Nice to see someone clearly explain what we came to the video for. I want to know about the pedal - not how good someone else is at playing their guitar. Hard to get away from the mega egos out there. You should do every type of review you have time for!!!
great video thank you for clarity !
Beautfiully pit together vid and well explained.
Would this work well with my Strymon El Capistan?
Thanks very much, great help!!

Very helpful video! Thank you!!
Paul man, I had a few loopers and I had to sell them as I wasn't happy with them. I just got the boss rc 30 and I find it much better. I understand that the looper will record what goes into it, therefore any pedal should go before it, however....I really like using an overdrive pedal as well as my amp's gain together. Is there any way to capture the whole signal? Loop fx on the amp maybe? Last thing: the more distorted the signal, the lower the volume of the looped track coming out of my amp when I play over it, sometimes to almost non existing. Any tips? Thanks :)
BlueTitan7 Hi, wow I have never put a looper in an FX loop but it makes sense. Try all your fx like distortion, Wah, overdrive before the amp. Then Chorus, Delay, 'verb etc. in the fx loop and then at the end of the effects loop chain insert the RC-30. Let me know if this works, it might work well or may not??
Paul Hanson Ok, thanks for the quick reply. I'll try :)
Just ordered one of these, and am new to looping. Really appreciate the video, excellent examples and info!
Can you put the looper through any amps ?? Great video dude it was really helpful :)
This video is really well done and helpful and I really appreciate you putting it together. Thanks.
Does the Mic In goes to the mono output with the guitar as well? In that case, how can i output the mic in one channel and the guitar in another? Anyone?
Thank you....that was good...juli
Could someone please tell me the name of the song at the beginning?
I've been looping for awhile now and own a few different ones. What I especially liked about this video was the piece about 'presetting' a rhythm in advance and saving it. The basic loop has always been the monkey on my back so that tip along was worth the watch. Great job Paul.
Hi Tim! How are you?
Thx, you know when I first used the RC-30 I thought I might be able to save a rhythm guide to be associated with the patch or preset. Then I realized why not just prerecord empty space. I discussed this with one of the Boss product support guys and he agreed that's the way to do it. Also since there are so many preset patches in there you can save a whole bunch. You could also prerecord drum loops or drum machine parts from external devices. This is getting me to thinking...
Paul Hanson
So, by empty space you mean literally create an empty track at the correct tempo? One or two blank presets at, say 95 bpm, and I could add a rhythm part live know the cut would occur at the precise time. Nice.
What a nice video! I have one of these on the way and this was a friendly look at some things I needed to learn. Thanks for your humility and your willingness to make a simple instructional video!
This was a great review, Paul. It gave me enough of an understanding of what this pedal does that I could figure out where the differences between it and it's predecessors are.Very helpful. Thanks a ton!
Great tutorial.. is it worth getting this now year 2018? Or would you recommend the rc 300 or 505?
It depends... if you want to gig then the RC-300 or the RC-50 gives you more options. I don't think the 505 is for guitar players. (I like the RC-50, it's discontinued but I would buy anything on eBay anyway). If you are new to looping the RC-3 with an optional FS-5U or the RC-30 would be very good. I think a multiple effects processor plugged in right before the looper is a good idea so you can get different sounds with one click of a pedal. I had to do a lot of tap dancing in this video because I was using individual pedals. Also make sure you can get a good bass sound with the fx unit, like an octave effect. Or grab a real bass, it looks good if you change instruments when you are looping in front of an audience!

I LOVE YOU ... IMO, BEST DEMO OF RC30 on UA-cam ! AWESOME JOB ! Thankssss ....
Nice explanation ! thank you.
Best video out there of the RC30 at least that I have seen. Thank you Paul.
Thanks! I'm just starting out and found this very helpful.
Best review/tutorial of these devices I've seen. Great job.
thanx for the reply..I'll try it..
Really good, well done with this.
hey just got a few hrs ago and love it first one i have ever had so new to the looping but love it so far but i cant figure out how to make a new loop without going to a new chanell or unpluging it to start over i know you can hold for 2 sec. and it will remove it but when you go to do a new one it pulls up the last one so how can you do a new loop without unpluging it or going to a ne chanell? thanks
huge help, thanks! i've been only able to do very basic stuff so far with my rc-30 (I'm still trying to master the timing of starting and ending loops) and I was trying to get a handle on this track-switching art, so thank again for this.
that helped so much, thanks mate.
great video!
I just got my RC-30 and it's difficult for me, it's a bit more complex than others loop pedals I used. For example:
a) I noticed you changed the rythm in one of the channels while playing the other. How in earth did you clear it? I try record some loops in one channel and then some other loops in the other channel. Then I want to clear one of them and unless I stop both channels, I can't clear it. That's very annoying because maybe I want to try something else and I'm stuck in the loops I made in that channel. Is there something I'm doing wrong?
b) More annoying than A) is that when I start from scratch, I start playing my guitar, then press left pedal to record the loop, and then I hit left pedal again to save that bars and loop, but it's still recording so the "overlap" between the first note of the loop and the first not of what I played make it hear a bit nasty. In other loops pedals you can stop recording, while the loop would play so you continue smoothly playing and going to something else. Is this clear? I tried stopping recording the loop with right pedal, but It woun't play once I cut, I have to play it with the left later on. Is this clear enough to understand?
I see you master this pedal very smoothly so I thought maybe you can help.
Thanx in advance!
a) Okay from memory... while TRACK 2 is playing hold the right pedal for a few seconds to make TRACK 1 active, or just press the TRACK 1 lighted button. Now TRACK 1 is active and the button is lighted, as I recall if you hold the left pedal for a few seconds the the active TRACK, TRACK 1 will be cleared. All this time TRACK 2 is playing.
b) The RC-30 has two modes, one: it starts recording imediately after you set the end of the loop. Or two: it will not start recording when you set the end of the loop. The manual tells you how to set the RC-30 to the second mode. I think that's what you need. Once you set it it will always stay in that mode. I just checked it's: "Changing Switching Order of Recording" on page 17 of the manual, hold tap tempo, power up and select RP with the up/down buttons.
great video, thanks for making that, keep on rockin!
I grew up with some methods of P. Hanson, I have beautiful memories ... great the clear way in which he explains the things. Great video.
Thank you for your demo, it's really clear and catchy!
i guess Im asking randomly but does anyone know of a trick to get back into an Instagram account..?
I was stupid forgot the account password. I would love any tricks you can give me
@Kamari Jordy instablaster =)
@Isaiah Ivan i really appreciate your reply. I got to the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
Takes a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Isaiah Ivan it did the trick and I actually got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thanks so much, you really help me out :D
@Kamari Jordy happy to help :)
thank you, really well explained
Thank you, Paul! This was very helpful!!!
well explained mate, cheers
Found this extremely helpful
Hey Paul, can I use my Engl Amps' Distortion and the effects from the tc electronics g-major 2? all over an engl 1x12" box..
Not shure how to connect this.. don't want to buy the rc-30 just to realize it doesn't work. :-)
Sorry for the late response. I missed your question. I've never done this but I'll bet you could run the looper in your fx-loop at the end of the fx chain. Do you run the G-Major in the FX loop? Btw, sounds like a cool rig! Is the 1x12 open or closed back?
Wow John, you made my day! Thx!!
PH
Are you Hanson's Dad?
Thanks Paul. Excellent demo. Just what I needed to know about the RC-30. You chose a great way to show the pedal's potentials. I've been making loops for many years - I even made tape loops for reel to reel in the late 70s ! Still rockin' ! LOL. Want a good live looper to play guitar over Fruity Loops. live ... this looks like a good choice.
Dokta Bob I can sell it to you, brand New 170 euros (+sending costs), i can send u some pics if you like
please do. doctorlupai@gmail.com thanks :)
Great tutorial!!
daggy
you're awesome
Glad this vid helps! Rock on!!
Thx, the RC-30 is pretty cool.
Excellent demo! I’ve had this pedal for a while and I still learned a few things from you... Thank you for posting!
I remember I did a lot of tap dancing on this video because I used separate pedals."Turning off one pedal, then turning another on" while playing, singing etc. really gets hard. That's why I've always used a multi FX when looping, then using presets, just one pedal push can change multiple effects paramiters!
Rock on!
PH
@@ShredGuitarOnline This is the direction I'm heading toward as well. I bought a Line 6 M5 to add to my other two FX pedals and once I got it all set up I thought, "you know, I should just get a multi FX so I can switch everything in one fell swoop." If you have any multi FX suggestions, I'd love to hear 'em. Thanks again!
@@precisionsoundworksstudio I say try out a bunch of multi FX units. My favorite is the Roland VG-99 with just a regular guitar input. ( The VG-99 also has the 13 pin input and can model other instruments.) It's crazy, all modeling multis sound different!! But I like Line-6 and Boss.
@@ShredGuitarOnline Thank you for the suggestion... I appreciate the reply!
Lots of commen sence thank you.
how would you use the vocal effects pedal and the mic input on the rc30 at the same time??
Yo Michael, I used a Boss VE-5, it goes between the mic and the looper's mic-in. Just like inserting an effect between guitar and amp.
Thanks Paul, That's sweet, my voice could use some extra help. :)
