  • In this video I show you how I quickly tune toms for heavy styles of music using used heads.
At gigs we are often in less than ideal conditions in a noisy environment so it’s good to know how to tune drums fast so you can get the kit you’re playing sounding as good as possible, whether that’s your own or a shared or rented kit.
I use the drum key to tap around the edge of the heads to get the pitch next to the tuning rods as close to one another as possible. Not everyone likes using a drum key for this, this is the way I’ve done it for years and it works well for me.
I usually use Remo Emperor clear heads on top, and Remo Ambassador clear on bottom.
The main 3 things I aim for when I’m tuning drums for heavy styles of music are:
The pitch of both heads is not too high - the heads are not too tight
Both heads are roughly the same pitch - bottom head slightly higher in some cases
Each head is in tune with itself - the pitch when tapping next to each tension rod is pretty much the same all around the drum
My drums are Pearl Reference in Granite Sparkle and the tom using in this video is a 12"x9" rack tom.

hearing how awful it sounded with the room mic vs the cleanliness of the close mic was worth the watch in this video. I've been struggling with the in the room sound vs the idealistic recording sound that I'm trying to achieve on my toms

That’s the thing! Any drum with the exact same tuning could sound 100 different ways depending on the room or listening environment, the way it’s hit, which side of the drum you’re standing when you hit it, and so many other factors. And that’s before it gets recorded and send through eq, compression, reverb, and whatever else.

100%. Suddenly I don't think my tuning is that bad

I couldn’t believe the difference with the mic. Sounded great!

@@trailertrashtactics yep! The sound of drums through close mics is very different to what you hear in the room next to it or through a phone mic.
Once you blend the close mics with room mics and overheads etc, the kit ends up sounding more whole, but it all starts with a drum that’s in tune (and hit properly)

i still have issues with this and its the most aggravating part of drumming. ty for posting this it will help with my random out of tune notes

It depends a lot on the drum, the size of it, the type of heads, the condition the heads are in, the room the drum is in, how it’s being hit etc. Also as you can see in the video, it sounds completely different acoustically compared to through a mic. Best way is to keep tweaking and trying different things and you’ll have less issues over time.

Yep, love it! Definitely helps to have quality shells, but you can also achieve a great sound with decent heads on a cheap kit.
