i have never read a better review of a game in my entire game.
Seeing this footage just makes me appreciate the movement of 3D Mario games even more.
More 3D platformers need to put as much effort into the movement as Mario does, it just makes the game so fun to play no matter the level design
Astrobot and sackboy are both up there now, both feel like nintendo quality platformers
Honestly, even compared to some lackluster c-list platformers i've played the movement here was just horrendous and makes those games look like mario in comparison!

So much looks familiar and yet so wrong compared to sonic
The only thing I can really compliment is how nice the icons looks, but whenever there's a screen of dialogue it also reminds me of Sonic Unleashed and that was one of the reason I didnt like playing unleashed

"Why are they dancing John? Why dont they stop?" I love it.
lol 😂 thats what i thought too
there's a weird flaw which i can't imagine how they overlooked it but if you're left with a single costume, you can't take it off. if you have a costume that can't jump and you're in an area where you can't progress without jumping, then you have to go get hit by an enemy to remove your costume. but if there are no enemies, which there are barely any anyway, then you're just...stuck?
which gives you more time to admire the dancing of the NPCs as long as you stay far away from them
Which was kind of interesting to watch in this video. I didn't even consider that possibility until I saw it and I was thinking. "This was an awful idea."
@Darling Vexa Art Oh don't get me wrong, I am well aware of its untapped potential, but if it stays like this, that is all it will ever be is untapped potential.
They should have just made this an animated movie.

I was so excited after watching that opening! Balan was so cool, and it had this Alice in Wonderland vibe (obviously). The second the game started proper however..... wow
Where they really that good though? They are beautiful but barely tell you anything. All style and no substance.
@@shir0azure339 even the gameplay explains nothing. There's next to no dialogue. "What am I doing, what is this? What are you. Who are you- oh you're gone now okay uhhh..." Sums up my playtime
@@shir0azure339 yeah, the intro cutscene looks like they wanna pull up a “Friend Like Me” a la Genie, but the lack of context makes it look more like the kids just fell on Balan’s trap and he proceeded to mind blow the ever heck of them with madness in colors while sending them to the shadow realm, all disguised in lights and rainbows to make it look like it’s not a kidnapping, especially with how confused and annoyed the kids look during the whole number
Before you ever animate your characters
Before you design your levels
Before you adjust the lighting
Before you bump map the fucking ground textures
You make sure your platformer _feels good to play_
We learned this lesson all the way back during Mario 64. Make your character’s movement your _first_ priority.
And they messed that up. Just absolutely baffling
Its so fucking sad, I couldnt even continue to the second world because the game controls made me so aggravated. And thats coming from someone who was so so excited and hyped for the game, it’s always a pipe dream with games like these :(
I honestly don't get it. Didn't they test their own game? There's no way you could play this and think "yup this is good platforming". It just feels so bad. I'm not even big into platformers, I've played A Hat in Time and some of Odyssey and that's it. And even I can tell that this game is bad.
And it's not even just the platforming, all of the gameplay just feels bad and disjointed. Nothing makes sense or has any context and the little side minigames if you want to call them that are just strange and it's jarring how they just immediately take you out of the main gameplay without any warning.
The thing that bugs me the most is the run animation, which you’ll be staring at the WHOLE TIME. This game needs much more time in the oven.
it looks like the character should be going faster given the speed of the run animation.
It makes running seem that much slower, and also slipperier.
@@spoon7053 exactly!
It needs much more time of someone going on the market and looking for the right ingredients, just on the oven would still be weird
"PUT ME BACK IN! I'M NOT DONE!"
@@psicopato2460 Exactly!!!They either have to tweek the movement all together giving us more moves without costumes(that ''GENERIC JUMP'' is literrary the only move you ve got and it gives you jaringly less momentum than it should)OR they have to tweek their focus mechanic:the power ups.The game would be much much better if you were moving faster and had like 8 powerup slots available assigned to different buttons on the controler so can switch them on the fly.Having only 3 available at all times with no adequate way to change them than going back to a previous level when needed is WAYYY too limiting....The indIvidual powerups that oftentimes take your ability to jump are stupidly limiting too but if we were able to choose from a wider variety on the go just by pushing a hot key the game would be a servicable puzzle platformer .A puzzle platformer where you could sometimes solve a puzzle in a different way and the challenge would be ''what power up should I choose now in order to surpass this obstacle''.They have chosen the wrong ingredients or at the very least they have mixed the ingredients in a totally wrong way.The game doesnt just need some polish in the oven,it needs deep tweeks on the gameplay department.

How’s this even acceptable tho...

Delay it for a couple months maybe
I hope that maybe they’ll send a survey out asking for feedback like Octopath and BD2 did
Played it for a bit on PS4... a delay isn’t going to do anything. The core of the game isn’t really fun and it’s too far into development to fix. Powers being one-note make it boring, and the level design being so linear for a 3D platformer isn’t fun to traverse even if the player character was fun to jump around with (they’re not). It’s very strictly lock-and-key design where you can’t interact with anything in the world unless you have the specific power for that problem. Seems like you’re supposed to go back with different power ups, but accessing them isn’t clear outside beating a boss (where you can change them) or beating a level with it.

Lol he deleted his comment
I tried the PC version and I just put it down after 10 minutes. I was shocked at how bored I was playing it. However, I didn't think it felt as terrible as you described and it looked and ran fine for the most part on the PC. The core issue for me is that the game is painfully basic in every way. Think Billy Hatcher but way slower and you never have access to the egg. It's somehow below Sonic Forces levels of basic which is insane to me. It's not even the run speed that bugs me all that much. I think that issue is a little overblown honestly. Instead, the problem is the general lack of movement options. Everything relies so heavily on the costume abilities but you can only use 1 move at a time and you can't quickly switch between costumes to pull off interesting maneuvers. All the buttons are tied to a single ability and it's just so boring as a result. I was cautiously optimistic going in but man this game is essentially what a bad 3D Kirby game would look like. Music's alright and I like the designs of the major characters and it looks like we got a new chao garden style thing with the Tims but...man...this game bummed me out

“Billy Hatcher but slower without the egg” is a nice comparison
"A bad 3D Kirby". oof
This game feels a lot worse on Switch, the game runs terribly on there
Yet either the movement or the costumes need more complexity, classic sonic could afford using one button because the movement physics are inherently interesting, but not even with the costumes does playing it feel anything beyond minimal complexity, like I've played fan games with more interesting movement.
I KNEW this game looked off. It looked cool stylistically, but the gameplay looked so BORING in every trailer
Even then I was always annoyed that everything looked more interesting than the protagonist. At first I was thinking you'd actually get to play as balan ala nights but he's just a QTE minigame and a bad one at that
Finally, finally someone who saw the trailer for what it was instead of shock at the demo.
I knew when they were boasting about the number of costumes, that was a mistake dividing platforming features into such minuscule portions for no reason.
@@mechashadow yeah that was a huge red flag at the beginning. Who wants to have to swap between so many costumes while playing?

Stopped playing after 10 minutes as I hated moving - if you hate moving in a platformer you are in trouble
I was so excited because I love platformers, but after my the demo I canceled my preorder from amazon.
Smart. You'd be better off getting Super Mario 3D World instead.
@@digitallovee623 I agree 100%, since octuber I had it preordered.
I just hope online performs better than smmaker.
same here, I canceled the second I beat the demo
@@armandomoncada9551 don’t worry, even if the online is just ok, you can still play Bowser's Fury which is looking to be a substantial addon to the game.
At least in sonic boom rise of lyric you have more than 2 actions your character can do
Lets be honest here, it's basically just an unfinished unity project someone did in college
This looks more stilted, awkward and sluggish than many N64 era platformers.
The fps runs and looks more like a game coming from gamecube or PS2
No joke I felt like I had more speed in mario 64
@@BlaizeTheDragon You definitely did!
Yeah because most N64 platformers actually felt good to play! Mario 64 and Banjo Kazooie honestly look like they were made after this game in terms of movement
@Darling Vexa Art I disagree, while it wasn’t as satisfying as Mario 64, It still felt fun to control
I was so hopeful for this game. 😢 There’s not enough imaginative platformers like what this tried to be.
The game looks pleasant in the trailers, but in actual gameplay…the resolution looks like the game is fit for the aspect ratio of the 3DS
I'm still looking forward to Balan WonderWorld when it releases and I can't wait to play the demo after that I'm going to have a blast playing Citizens Unite Earth x Space all the way.
The costumes could be cool if
A. You had access to all of them and there spread out throughout the game like masks in Majora's Mask.
B. You could do tech like a high jump with the wolf suit and quickly swap to the kangaroo to hover.
Or have multiple moves like Kirby’s copy abilities. Anything better than having 6 different buttons for jumping, why did they think that was a good decision
Honestly I was thinking more like psychonauts where each button is a different costume ability
@@mattkugelman4369 yes that’s what I was feeling. Since all four face buttons do the same function, it would be cool to assign a different power to each and chain them together
I love that you just really get down to the nitty gritty right out the gate 😂
Already I want to watch Arin feel this pain.
Balan's T-Posed World
Well happy to have the demo to know the problems it has, before giving it $60 to try it.
JON
*you missed the cance to say "Hi, i'm someone else!"*
I thought the same 😄
Someone else! Someone else!
What are you guys talking about, this is an amazing looking Dreamcast game
Yo you cant diss dreamcast like that
Yuji Naka was a damn fool for leaving Sonic in the hands of Iizuka. Tried leaving to form his own game company, and it went bankrupt. Yuji and Iizuka are better as a team rather than each of them being apart.
Oh god, is this another id Software style break-up when a schism between the two Johns occurred, which caused Romero to leave and create the craptacular Daikatana while Carmack led the rest of id into mediocrity until he left? Hopefully, the same optimistic fate of id and the Doom franchise happens to Sonic and Sega.
It had so much potential, but it ended up being a generic platformer that looks like a wii game
A Wii game bullshit.
Have you not seen the gameplay videos and shit you act like the graphics are brand new I knew about the graphics from day one this game looks beautiful and is fun UA-camrs like this are dumb and don't know how to play videogames.
@@MadSociety-uy6zg I’m jealous that you can think graphics like these are beautiful
@@MadSociety-uy6zg The graphics look super good in the cut scenes but in general during gameplay they're pretty alright but sometimes looks a bit like wii game
@@dullicecream not really even Wii looks amazing not all obviously but the graphics don't look as bad as Nintendo life is making it out to be and has anyone not seen the announcement trailer this isn't anything new if you seen the announcement trailer you would know what the in game graphics are going to look like
Dont try coop, that is soooo bad. Its 1 camera for 2 players and if you walk too close to each other, you automatically connect to each other so you BOTH control 1ish character.
That running animation...woo buddy.
The characters run like Silver in Sonic 06.
You wanna have a good time with this game? *"It's no use!"*
The game had potential. They picked a fantastic theme for the game. But I played the demo and I wasn't having fun at all. The cutscene was so pretty and the music was nice but everything else feels like a cheap indie game. On full price I can't support this game. Its a shame cause the initial trailer really made me interested on the game.
I feel the exact same way. It’s really a let down. I had high hopes.
Wait for psychonauts 2
This... this looks like something DDI would make...
This does feel like a Data Design game
The run animation reminds me of traversing the chao garden in sonic adventure 2.
Great video. I'm glad you guys did this as it will save me some time with downloading that demo over my crap internet connection.
