@@madFame i do have one question/peculiarity...i swear my amplitude modulation sensitivity doesn't behave in the same way as yours...is there anything i need to do in the function settings to match up? even with the mod wheel all the way up it tends to cut out some of the growl you get in your patches when you do assign amp mod sens to 3
mamsk Same here, its sounds slightly different on mine, im using a dx7s which is newer than the original one shown here. Mine also doesnt have an eg bias “on” setting that i can see, just eg bias with range zero to 99
I think this is the third time (or even fourth) I using this video for programming solid bass. This time I will do in dexed and later send it to tx7. So, thank you very much for super useful tutorials! I've done others aswell 😀 thanks!
Very good explanation. Since my DX100 stopped working, I have missed the solid bass patch. But recently i downloaded the Arturia DX V synth demo, and at patch 4-OP Bass is a good version of solid bass.
Thank you so much for guiding me into making patches... Its been something I’ve been frightened of for years. This massively opens up my world inside the DX7! Thanks man
My pleasure Matt! You got skills man, please keep recording and making music. I checked out your song "I Just Wanna Love Ya" - it's a jam! I'm happy to keep making tutorials and patches so long as musicians like you keep making dope music. Thanks bro. Other people check it out: ua-cam.com/video/50LQbX9TXCo/v-deo.html
this is such a nice teaching tool i have a volca fm ive been ignoring for a while because the synthesis is just so unfamiliar to me , but watching these is making me want to give it another shot
@jkandclark Yeah, I thought it would be interesting to recreate using only 4 Ops on the DX7 and a similar algorithm. The frequency values and envelopes are a little different than on the DX100 but the sound came out well eventually. Thanks for watching!
Hey man, I appreciate the kind words. I sometimes wonder if the content is working for people, so thanks for sharing your thoughts! Forest of Fallen Giants is dope btw, love that you recorded through a Fostex. I have a Fostex 320S that needs more use, you've inspired me.
Please, man, would you mind sharing the .syx? I'm trying to make it on my FM8 copy, but the terms, names, and windows (screens) are really different here...
I think this patch sounds a bit more analog if you set the OSC keysync setting off. I means each keypress sounds slightly different as the operators waveforms are at different phases. It's subtle though.
Awesome tutorial!! I now have Solid Bass on my SY77. I took your DX7 conversion and converted it to SY77, which not only have different algorithms, it also differs in level settings. I used algorithm 31 on my SY77. Will you please make a tutorial on how to convert the DX100:s "Tease - Jazz organ" used on "I like to move it, move it..." Big thanks!!!
These videos are great, @madFame. I always wonder how you arrive at the numbers. Can you expand on your thinking behind each choice? It would help in learning to design patches. Maybe for future custom patch tutorials...
Hi Pete, thanks for watching. I think that's a great question, so I'll dedicate the next video to answering it. I'll have something done in the next week because I'm sure there are others out there wondering how I work my way through a patch. Cheers!
Hey man I really love your videos, not a lot of people go into depth about making patches on the dx7 from scratch like you do, I'm curious to know if you have ever made a Wurlitzer sounding patch and what the process of obtaining that sound would be ? Thanks !
Hey there, thanks for the kind words! It's funny, I spent most of last month programming Rhodes and Hammond sounds. I've tweaked one of them just now after reading your comment and it's a pretty decent Wurli. I'll do a video in the next few weeks with the result. I used Algorithm 5 if you want a place to start. Thanks for watching!
Ohhhh man, you changed my life! I had never thought it was possible mimic a solid/lately using a dx7 , and for sure not realistic like this (almost 100%) , well about the digital distortion missed maybe a bit crusher could be usefull ?
Yes, the FM chips in DX7 are different to the DX100. DX100 is a lot clearer but has less programming capabilities. The DX7 can emulate Solid Bass very well but it has a slightly softer tone.
There's no Patreon page anymore... I would try your patch here... By far, this is the best Solid/Lately Bass I've found... ...but there's no way to get it anymore... 😟
I got lost here too at first, but after rewatching it realised i'd misunderstood. If you open up the Envelope tab-on the right side you can see where you change rate 1,2,3,4 and level1,2,3,4 - he goes through them seperately for operator 3, 4, 5 + 6
Please guys, all those operators are with sine waves or there are some with different ones? I'm trying to figure out how to get to this same patch om FM8 here and the terms and names seem to be different. It has even the Tx81Z waves if I need them. But I have no idea what waves those operators are using... Any of you could give me some help, please?
@davedagreat69 That's a great question. In this case you can experiment and see what happens with OP1 and OP2. Anytime you have spare operators that occupy their own space and are not connected to the operators currently being used (in this case a two-op stack: OP1 = Carrier OP2 = Modulator) you can program anything you like with them and see how that sits with this sound the other operators are making. A good tip for this patch would be to use OP1 Output level to balance it's volume against the Solid Bass sound as it may come out a bit loud with an output level of 99. I suggest around 90 - 95 and then mess around with OP2 output level and both of their frequencies to start getting some tones going.
@@madFame Great. My DX is at the menders at the moment, but I have a TX802 and SY99, so I might try it on those. It's very similar to what I do with my SQ80. It has three oscillators, so I make a standard sawtooth bass patch with two of them, then use the third to add interesting attack transients to the sound to change the feel of it.
I copied Op3 to Op1 and Op4 to Op2 then detuned them and it gives a nice thick sound. I've heard people used to do that with two TX81Z units using this same patch.
Great videos! :-) Just one question: it seems the modwheel parameters on the DX7-IIFD are different... Is that correct? Where can I find them? The manual is not very helpful. Thanks!
Hi Roman, I'm not sure actually, I haven't programmed with a DX7 IIFD yet. Hopefully one of our viewers might have the answer for you. Thanks for watching!
Hey man, sorry I only have this quick recipe format. All you need is to know where the buttons are. Then just copy which ones I press, saves the long winded explanations.
While these distortion add to the character of the sound for sure, I don't see how anybody would really like that. My TX7 has some of these artifacts and even that gets on my nerves sometimes
Can anyone please point me to good tutorials (preferably 4 operator) for the following FM patches: steel drum, human voice/choir, musical saw and, harpsichord? There appears to be no shortage of FM synth tutorials for bass, brass and electric piano sounds but not for the instruments/sounds I desire. Thanks.
Any time I'm DJing a club and this lately bass starts coming through the speakers...people get to jerkin'. Not sure why, not sure how...but you can't argue with results 🤷♂
Yup, by default the DX7 generates sine waves. If you transpose the keyboard to lower octaves and play the low keys you'll definitely hear sine sub bass.
never stop my dude...just snagged myself a dx7 and your videos are an absolute joy to learn from.
Thanks mamsk! I'm glad you're enjoying the tutorials with your new DX7!

I use a DT7 and DX-Alyzer on the Atari. Thank you for the patch and direction on this.
I just programmed this into an FM layer on my Kurzweil K2700... It sounds BANG ON exact! Orbital Chime here we come.... lolol
Always loved that patch on the 100. Never thought about trying to recreate it on the 7 - or any other patch for that matter

There are lots of good DX7 videos out there but I think yours are the best. Short simple and too the point. Plenty of info too. Keep it up!

Ahhh thank you :D!
I think this patch sounds a bit more analog if you set the OSC keysync setting off. I means each keypress sounds slightly different as the operators waveforms are at different phases. It's subtle though.
Yes indeed! The DX7 is very well thought out to allow programmers the flexibility to achieve more variability in a patch.
Amazing!!!!
Also just watching you programme the dx at that speed is inspirational!

When you change the amplitude mod sens don’t forget to change the pitch mod sens to 0 as well

Could you post a tutorial to make this same patch, preset, sound on Vital synth?
Following along on the DX7 V. Got lost at 3:50 when you started talking about EG levels. How is this done on the vst?
I got lost here too at first, but after rewatching it realised i'd misunderstood. If you open up the Envelope tab-on the right side you can see where you change rate 1,2,3,4 and level1,2,3,4 - he goes through them seperately for operator 3, 4, 5 + 6
Also it turns out the patch exists on the vst anyway! - check out lately bass
The DX7 V has the Solid Bass as a preset. It's called 'Lately Bass'. Since the Bass originated from the TX81Z.
I wonder if there’s a way to use Op 1&2 to add in that digital noise?
Excellent!
Wondering if we can do that on Vital or Dexed...
I was able to do it on dexed
Your videos r fucking amazing
Thank you sir! New custom patch vid coming out in a week :)
nice now I need to replicate this with fm8
Initialize
-1 octave,
Algorithm 14,
Feedback = 7
op 1 volume = 0,
op 3 : volume = 99, coarse = 0.5, detune = +1, EGL1 = 99, EGL2 = 0, EGL3 = 0, EGL4 = 0, R1 = 99, R2 = 35, R3 = 99, R4 = 90, amplitude mod sens = 3
op 4 : volume = 70, coarse = 0.5, EGL1 = 99, EGL2 = 0, EGL3 = 0, EGL4 = 0, R1 = 99, R2 = 35, R3 = 99, R4 = 50
op 5 : volume = 70, detune = -1, EGL1 = 99, EGL2 = 0, EGL3 = 0, EGL4 = 0, R1 = 99, R2 = 50, R3 = 99, R4 = 50
op 6 : volume = 79, coarse = 1.01, detune = -7, EGL1 = 99, EGL2 = 0, EGL3 = 0, EGL4 = 0, R1 = 99, R2 = 55, R3 = 99, R4 = 99
Mod Wheel range = 99
EG bias = On
I have my own copy of it for the CZ-1000 ;)

Is there an explanation of how the modulators shape the sound?
Can you use Operators 1 and 2 to add interesting variations to the solid bass sound, or does it ruin the punchy effect of the patch?
@davedagreat69 That's a great question. In this case you can experiment and see what happens with OP1 and OP2.

TX81Z and it's newer than the DX7 and Dx100 not older.
