    Non programmers are usually the first to condemn it and get rid of it
    Savvy Programmers know better then to sell this mathematical wonder machine

    Thank you for this! I've been searching for anyone actually making a patch in the DX7 just so I can actually learn FM synthesis hands on (via the Dexed software). Now I have a home base starting point to tweak things and see how this machine works. Awesome stuff.

    I think this is my favorite patch of yours! Very warm and expressive, emotional. I love the expressive harmonies that you go through in your videos to show how your patches sound, and this one very makes them shine.
    Very complicated to translate to Reface DX imo, as the left stack used as LFO uses 2 operators. I tried three options with reface algo 8, one with algo 9 :
    - For algo 8, the three choices of two stacks among three
    - With algo 9 : Operator 1 at frequency .50. Operator 2 a fixed frequency 1 Hz. Operator 3 at frequency .51. Operator 4 modulating 2 and 3, at frequency .50. So operator 3 modulated by 4 looks a little bit like your second stack, and operator 2 modulated by 4 is like your first LFO stack.

      Thank you Ti! Yes, I put a bit of effort into the intros, to not only demonstrate the patch but also present the DX7 and FM synthesis in a way that usually isn't done. Normally people think FM is harsh and aggressive but it can be very soft and lush too. Great work converting my patches to the reface!

    Algorithm 5 is a great one. Seriously. You can turn off operators till you need them for additional layers and it's a great one for practice programming.

    This sounds great, reminds me of the band JUNGLE, it sounds pretty similar to Lemonade Lake, Casio or Cherry. Best tutorial so far.

    Love your vids! For me, menu diving on the DX7 is the main reason why I lean towards using the massive collection of user patches instead of creating my own. Your patches are some of my favorites though! Would you consider making a patch that could rival that of a vintage string machine like a Solina String Ensemble?

    Love the videos man! I just started getting into Synths! As I'm mainly a guitar guy, Im having some troubles "recreating" sounds I like. This is really helping me! Any idea on how to do the Maniac By Michael Sembello

  •  3 роки тому

    Thank you so much! I am Recreating those sounds in Reason with the "Algoritm" Instrument. As i did not get the Dexed to interface with Reason. and the PX7 Rack Extension is no longer available.
    My Problem is still the Envelopes.
    Envelope Level and Envelope Rates are not so easy to understand and Translate into ADSR Envelopes

    Hey dude I’m loving these patches and just getting into FM! I’m trying to recreate this patch but I’m using a korg opsix which has an adsr envelope so I’m missing out on translating that from the envelope rate settings you’re dialling in here. Any advice would be welcome! Cheers

    Love this patch! When I programmed it in my DX7, there is a very faint lingering of the last few tones played. Any ideas on how to remedy this?

    hey, great sound as always. just wondering if you’ve ever looked into casio cz synths? slightly similar to a dx7 but has different waveforms to choose from and the controls are more approachable than the dx7

    • @madFame
      @madFame  3 роки тому +4

      Surprisingly I only just tried my first CZ early this year. It was a CZ-101 I was repairing for a friend. While I'm not completely familiar with the workflow, I hope to get one for myself in the future. I love analogue synths, but I'm developing a lot more respect for the digital synths of the 80s, very underrated.

      The arturia CZ is actually quite good. I've been using it a ton lately.

      @@madFame nice to hear you’ve played one, i’m sure you could program some amazing sounds in no time on it. I managed to figure it out in about a day or two, you’ve got 8 stage envelopes for the pitch, waveform (essentially filter, like adjusting the envelopes on a dx7 modulator) and amplitude. That’s attack, sustain, release and as many decays as you want from 0 to 5. You can set the rates really slow too so the sound evolves over a long time like up to a minute. Check out Satoshi & Makoto on youtube, they’re the best programmer of the cz on youtube i’ve found.
      I’m a fan of analog and digital synths, digital just gives you completely unique and often unpredictable sounds and lets you edit sounds much more intricately.
      It’s a shame people think of the dx7 as impossible to program as it’s just like working from the other way round to analog, you build the sound upwards rather than subtractive synthesis. Luckily your videos are helping people get into programming the dx7, they certainly have helped me so thank you 👍

    • @madFame
      @madFame  3 роки тому +1

      @ Louis Day I feel the same way about digital as you. I started with subtractive and heard the same bad comments about FM but was totally surprised at how much I enjoyed the sound when I learned how to program it.
      Of course it took time to figure out, but I wanted unique sounds that subtractive couldn't give me. I'm glad that my simplified method is helping synth-fans and musicians like yourself learn a better method for creating great sounds with FM.
      Thanks for taking the time to watch my videos and to share your kind words.

    Hi, your channel is simply the best to speak about dx7 fm engine..
    I have modx6, I would like to reproduce your tuto but algorythm's are not the same cause 8 operator. I don't know which one choose to start fm Co struction... How can I remedy to this?

    • @madFame
      @madFame  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Alex, although the FM-X algorithms have an extra 2 operators, you can still match DX7 algorithms with them. I use DX7 ALG5 and the closest MODX algorithm is ALG13, but you would have to program the operators in reverse order.
      EG:
      DX7 ALG5 = OP1, OP2, OP3, OP4, OP5, and OP6
      MODX ALG13 = OP8, OP7, OP6, OP5, OP4, and OP3.
      Note: DX7 OP6 and MODX OP3 have the feedback loop. MODX OP1 and OP2 are not used.
      It can be confusing but this one for one transfer should allow your MODX to program this patch.
