Hi Callum, been watching you videos throughout my application, I was wondering what sort of clothing you take with you on your phase 1 including the suit and if your shoes will be used or not throughout your career or if you get given new shoes.
Great video! I passed my interview last September, I’m currently 17 years old awaiting my official date to go and do my phase 1 training. I have applied to be a weapons technician (submariner) I was wondering if you had any insight on the submarine branch and any insight on weapons engineering. I am also curious as to what the daily fitness routines in phase 1, 10 week training is like? Keep up the good work👍
Weapon engineer covers a massive spectrum. We have Communication, sensors and weapons on a surface ships and these 3 groups usually stick to there area of expertise. On a submarine you will be doing slightly more of a mixture of those 3 when it come to maintenance. You will have a much better understanding of all systems on board compared to a surface ship. Phase 1 fitness training is a mixed bag of outdoor activities to gym hall circuits. Lots of running is involved as you can imagine. You will usually do 4/5 sessions a week.
@Anns Ssa, I did write a detailed reply to you but there is an error in sending it so I will give the short answer. YES as long as you are eligible to join the Royal Navy then you will do your phase 1 and 2 in England. Cornwall and collingwood
How much are the general bills? Accommodations, food, travel etc etc? Love all the content, joining in June so these videos have been really insightful
Living on a ship doesn't cost anything and your three main meals are provided. Shore establishment are slightly different depending on what type of accommodation you get, I don't think I have ever paid more than £90 for my accommodation. That comes straight from your paycheck. If you ten go to the galley for your 3 core meals then you won't be spending more than £10 a day on food, unless you get a chefs special or anything other than the core meal. Food during phase 1 is free
Tough one really, it's all about what you prefer to do and what you are capable of doing. The results of the psychometric test will show you what branches you can do. Its all down to preferences each branch has elements of getting hands on. Pay wise engineers are on a higher tier of pay due to the complexity of the job. Its all about what you want to do and seeing what roles within the armed forces fit that!
A question to your careers office they should be able to supply you with that, if not then have a look online there are usually sites with info like this available!

Warfare officers have many important roles on board, this can range from fighting the ship using its vast range of weapon systems to navigating it through some of the world's busiest channels. Your beginning as a young officer will see you completing many hours on the bridge shadowing an officer of the watch in order for you to gain the experience needed to take control of the bridge team and navigate the ship yourself. Further career aspect can see you becoming a Principle Warfare Officer (PWO), Fleet navigator, Gunnery officer (small ships), Executive officer or even Commanding Officer of a vessel.
Hi Callum, I've been watching your videos as I'm going through the recruitment process (I'm at the very beginning of it), and wanted to thank you for your content as I've found it really helpful to have a better idea of what it's going to be like. I did have another couple of questions that haven't really been answered. - What kind of jobs do you do when you're off ship? Only asking as you've mentioned before that you find it boring. - Once you've done all your basis training, phase 1 and 2, how quickly are you being deployed? - On average, how often do you get deployed within a year? - When on ship, do you have your own room or is it shared? - What is the phone policy like off and on ship (Communication with family/friends)? - What clothing are you given during phase 1 training (what uniform do you get) and what are you due to bring to HMS Raleigh? Thank you for your great videos and I'll be looking forward to the rest of your content and hopefully you could answer some of my questions😅. Thanks Callum.
Hi there and thank you for your kind words. I like the questions you have raised and I shall do a video based on these as I feel alone of people may be thinking the same thing. You shall have my answers by the end of the week :D
@@CallumFrogley There was another question that came up that you might be able to answer, if it's not too late. If you join as a rating and progress to the highest level as a rating, could you still become an officer and then keep progressing from there? Not sure that makes any sense? Thanks

Hi there, please feel free to check out my channel as there are alot of videos that will help to answer these your questions, if there is anything else I can help you with then please let me know :)
Costs vary depending on what type of accommodation you get, it starts in phase 2 I believe but comes straight out of your wage anyway. Roughly 70 quid a month
@@nevn3162 fitness test you must pass. Other things like kit muster is mostly pass or fail regardless of effort, but also if your instructor likes/ dislikes can have an effect. Weekly phys is purely off effort.
You would have to bring it up at your medical review during your recruitment process, unfortunately I cannot answer this question as I am not qualified in this area.
I'm 14 and wanting to join the Royal Navy. Since gyms are closed do you recommend runs also any other training I could do at home which would help me for my future
Run more than the 1.5 miles do 3 miles at least. RNFT is actually easy if you train for it. Run at least three times a week for at least 35 minutes. Remember to dress for the occasion and wear trainers designed for sport not fashion. Remember you are aiming for a 10 minute run at best effort, if you have already doubled that distance you will be laughing. I can still pass it with a time of 9.44 and I am officially old.
Yes everyone gets the same initial issue of uniform...some branches like pilots, divers and submariners get extra equipment as they progress through their career
Hi Callum, I’m thinking of joining the navy in a year or 2 with a couple of my mates as an engineer on a accelerated apprenticeship scheme for air engineering is there any information you could give me about that branch please ?
How you doing Callum, thinking of joining as an aircrewman but there isn’t much information around it. Just wondering if you’ve got any experience or information? Cheers pal
highly doubt your going to see this as it’s being 8 months shippers but i was just wondering if you have ever being on it or heard any dits about it joining in jan and it’s my first ship
Hi Callum, looking to join as a weapons engineer and can see there's the surface fleet branch or the submarine branch, is there any movement between the two as they have the same core purpose of weapons engineering? Or is it either or?
Go skimmer first, you can volunteer Submariner later. If you can’t handle boats it’s easier to transfer back after taking your golden hello. You will have to do three years in boats at least. WESM do more work than there surface counterparts.
Hi I know this is a late comment but would you be able to tell me abit about the warfare intelligence specialist job role? Its caught my eye and I was wondering if you could give me some incite thank you:)
What’s the longest you’ve been on deployment for Also how long does it take for pay to rise eg aircrewman can earn up to 51k how long would it take to achieve that
That would take a while to reach that sort of pay, probably a Senior Warrant Officer or Lt.Cdr....but if you are super keen you can rise through the ranks quickly....
nearly finished year 11 and want to be a marine engineering specialist submariner. im 6'4 and im worried about being in the needed BMI range, do you have any tips?
Will I get tested for pot use at the medical test? I smoked a few joints these past few weeks and my test is coming up. I'm worried I may fail and not be given a chance to join the Navy.
Engineers Retention pay. You get an extra few quid a day on top of your core salary that increases with rank. I believe it starts at Leading Hand. Also certain jobs such as being an Aircraft Engineer Technician puts you in the third tier pay band, which will see you earn slightly more than other branches in the Navy.
@@K7UK do they have this engineer retention pay just because it’s a higher skilled harder job, or do they have a lot of problems with engineers quitting so have to pay them more to stop them leaving?
@@d-paddan5393 It's based on a few things. One major aspect to why a branch is placed in a certain pay band is what the individual has to overcome to achieve their task. For instance certain engineers are paid in a higher pay band due to signing for work that could potentially put the air/sea vehicle at risk. Also due to the length of training and qualifications attained, it's in the best interest of the Royal Navy to hold onto highly trained personnel in fear of them leaving for jobs that pay similar in civilian street. This extra pay also offsets the salary to match competitive jobs in civilian street.
Seaman specialist can be limiting, you do some good jobs like driving the small boats, however you are a cleaner/painter also. Go for the most intelligent job your test will allow you to do. Engineering role is good for when you leave.
hello! i’m 16 and starting my full application process but was wondering you anyone has any inside info on what a WS really does and what they really do- my recruitment officer said that there were better things but none of his recommendations are for me- can anyone help? :)
It is a possibility, especially if you are a casualty. Sometimes it is required due to the ships programme that you are flown from a shore base to a ship
Anything as long as it can be stowed away in a locker where you aren't in the accommodation. I've seen people bring TVs and consoles....no pets though haha
I live on base or on ship during the week and return home on the weekends. Some people who live closer to the base or ship return home after work and commute daily

I've been watching your videos as I'm going through the recruitment process (I'm at the very beginning of it), and wanted to thank you for your content as I've found it really helpful to have a better idea of what it's going to be like.
Thank you@@CallumFrogley! I'll be looking forward to seeing that video.
@@CallumFrogley There was another question that came up that you might be able to answer, if it's not too late. If you join as a rating and progress to the highest level as a rating, could you still become an officer and then keep progressing from there? Not sure that makes any sense?
Thanks
@@franchella94 oh absolutely you can, all will be explained
@@CallumFrogley I’m very much looking forward to this video.
Hey ur videos have helped me so much in deciding if the navy is for me. Im slightly stressed about the interview you need to do. How difficult is it pass? Do you need do alot of studying of the royal navy beforehand? Thanks!
Hey thanks for watching, I have a video all about the interview on my channel, feel free to have a look. I didnt find it hard to pass at all. Just know the basics about what the navy is today which my video will help with and relax....they want to recruit you so show them why 😁

What are the navy's rules on couples quarters, are you able to choose where you live?
Hi Callum, any tips for home workouts and exercises to be ready for phase 1.
Also your videos are helping a lot and are a good for motivation during this pandemic. Cheers
Awh thanks so much! I'm glad you are enjoying them. Plenty of HIIT circuits which you can find online or on a fitness app. Press ups, sit ups and running. They are the main focuses really!
@@CallumFrogley cheers mate nice one
Hi Callum , I’m currently applying for a weapon engineering technician role in the navy , do you have any advice for the joining process and also the physical requirements as I need to prepare for the process of joining

What are the costs of living (accomodation etc) and in what phase does it start ?
Costs vary depending on what type of accommodation you get, it starts in phase 2 I believe but comes straight out of your wage anyway. Roughly 70 quid a month
@@CallumFrogley thanks for your response mate! 👍🏽
im quite a big guy, im in the middle of a weightloss journey and im at 32bmi, are they really strict about it?
To pass your medical your BMI must be under 28, there are some exeptions though. Once you're in you just need to pass a yearly fitness test.
@@evan390 thank you mate, If you struggle to do things in training will you be kicked ? Even if your giving your all ?
@@nevn3162 fitness test you must pass. Other things like kit muster is mostly pass or fail regardless of effort, but also if your instructor likes/ dislikes can have an effect. Weekly phys is purely off effort.
I just watched a video of when you went for your first medical 7 years ago you have well changed now and ovbs that fitness test went well lol
It did go well thank you! And yes my body has changed a lot since I first joined and continues to change
Hey Callum, is it likely that you can join as an engineer if you used to take antidepressants? I've heard mixed answers.
You would have to bring it up at your medical review during your recruitment process, unfortunately I cannot answer this question as I am not qualified in this area.
How different is the life as a submariners to the rest of the navy? And are they as revered and seen as "elite" as they portray themselves?
Hey long did you wait before getting ur start date for phase one , I've currently been waiting for about a month
i waited 7 months for a start date cause of corona. i am due to start 24th may i got the email about 2 weeks ago.
@@chloe-mariabird894 thanks for the reply
I'm 14 and wanting to join the Royal Navy. Since gyms are closed do you recommend runs also any other training I could do at home which would help me for my future
Have you got any tips on completing a 1.5 mile run in the limited time?
It's actually one I struggle with myself but I have a playlist on my channel all about the RNFT, take a look.
@@CallumFrogley thank you!
Does everyone across all branches get the same uniform or does it change for what branch you’re in
Yes everyone gets the same initial issue of uniform...some branches like pilots, divers and submariners get extra equipment as they progress through their career
@@CallumFrogley okay thank you so much mate 👍
Great vid bro, BTW APEX is dog toffee!
🙄
Hi Callum, I’m thinking of joining the navy in a year or 2 with a couple of my mates as an engineer on a accelerated apprenticeship scheme for air engineering is there any information you could give me about that branch please ?
The accelerated apprenticeship is very competitive, I applied almost 2 years ago and only got my intake date a few weeks ago for May
strange question but do you get Dog tags at any point or if you have your own are you allowed to wear them?
You do receive ID Discs during phase 1
what qualifications do you need before enlisting as a marine engineer
5 GCSEs C and above I believe and a high score on the psychometrics test
@@CallumFrogley thanks
Can you go home on weekends phase 2
Yes you can
I’m intrigued, why the thumbs down for warefare specialist? I’m interested in this role, is it not a good role to go for?
The role is perfectly fine it's just an inside joke if you like. Obviosuly I'm bias towards weapon engineering haha
Oh I see haha
How you doing Callum, thinking of joining as an aircrewman but there isn’t much information around it. Just wondering if you’ve got any experience or information? Cheers pal
highly doubt your going to see this as it’s being 8 months shippers but i was just wondering if you have ever being on it or heard any dits about it joining in jan and it’s my first ship
Would you suggesting joining the Royal navy or the Royal Fleet auxiliary and why?
I’m joining royal fleet auxiliary first and then Royal Navy after 4 years
@@eliselawless5410 why?
What rank are you and what is the best way to get promoted Ik it's probably different for each role
Why do you not like the warfare specialist role tbh, is there something bad about it?
Nothing wrong with the warfare specialist role, it is vital for fighting the ship and reconnaissance! Its just interdepartmental banter 😁
Can you choose your deployments
You can state preferences but you can be sent anywhere
What happens after phase 2 for engineers, do you get put on a ship or stay at your phase 2 establishment until you do?
After training to will receive your first assignment. That may either be a ship or shore establishment.
nearly finished year 11 and want to be a marine engineering specialist submariner. im 6'4 and im worried about being in the needed BMI range, do you have any tips?
Will I get tested for pot use at the medical test? I smoked a few joints these past few weeks and my test is coming up. I'm worried I may fail and not be given a chance to join the Navy.
They do usually ask for a urine sample. Honesty is the best policy
Can any branch be a gunner or ship guard when you're visiting a port
No the warfare branch and seamen specialists take that role
Different ships run things differently though
How many years do you serve in the navy before you retire?
Depends on your contract but mine is 24 years
If I join as a royal navy aircrewman when on shore will I be at a navy or raf base ?
You can be at either. Tri service
Really interested in your role coming from IT myself, what is your role called?
Engineer Technician Weapons Engineer.....but you would be interested in CIS (Communication Information Specialist)
In your interview video you said about "mechanics pay" what is this.
How many sit ups and press ups does a woman 19 yr old I can’t find the exact number anywhere on the websites
From what I have seen (and I may be wrong) it looks like it's a best effort kinda thing, it isn't pass or fail.
I am thinking about joining up after sixth form in year 12 now. Do you think that it is better to apply now or wait till I finish.
Apply now as process can take longer due to covid
I’m 16, Just applied for seaman specialist role in the warfare branch. Is that a good branch choice or do you suggest otherwise?
Your branch choice is completely up to you, they all have great qualities!
Seaman specialist can be limiting, you do some good jobs like driving the small boats, however you are a cleaner/painter also. Go for the most intelligent job your test will allow you to do. Engineering role is good for when you leave.
Hi i heard ss get a lot if shit for there role but i like what it has to offer
Is it right you train with women? What's that like and how much trouble can you get into as a result?
Yes we do train alongside the women as a class...not sure what you mean by trouble?
Dont fratanise and its fine.
I’m 16 thinking about going into the navy. Do you think I should apply now or do A levels or get an apprenticeship? Also what’s the fitness test like?
You can get Alevels and apprenticeships while your in the navy , I would just go for it , fitness standards should be on the navy website
