Verdelle Smith - Tar And Cement (Original Stereo)

- Full length version.
A huge Australian hit in 1966 for the talented U.S. R&B singer.
The number was adapted with English lyrics from an original Italian composition, ‘Il ragazzo della via Gluck’ (translated as ‘The Boy From Gluck Street’).
Smith’s haunting vocal and the song’s strong protest theme struck a chord with Australian record buyers and the single was eventually deemed to have peaked at the national #2 position (as an Australia wide top 40 was not compiled at the time, this ranking was published many years later following an analysis of retail sales in 1966).
Although the song was recorded in stereo, two mono mixes of differing length were initially issued in Australia on the ‘Capitol’ label.
This is the complete version (containing the original extended vocal introduction as well as the fadeout to a cold ending), and with a slightly longer running time than is shown on the original 45 single.
The shorter (3.09) mono track (first released on an EP disc) appears to have received the majority of airplay over the years.
Australia release date: Mid 1966.
Highest chart position: #1 (Melbourne)
One the songs i like as young man.
As i turn 62 this year in 2024.it still makes my heart sing. 😊😊.
Its type of song that when your 20 years old you loved the song.
It stills sounds great 40 years later.
Great song 🎵
It made Number One here in Australia in 1966. A lot of people still remember it fondly.
Whitch part of Australia? I live Brisbane. 😊
As a child I loved this song, as an adult I love it more. Such irony in the lyrics is the truth of what is happening to this planet.
A beautifully performed song that has stood the test of time, with words that are still very much relevant to the world we live in.
Thanks for your comments.
The funny thing for me is my childhood home town stayed the same... 40 years later! It is starting to change now though... such a sweet song for those who know... like I said... my home town that I moved from after 11 years stayed almost really almost the same... a dream come true.
Thanks for posting this. The sound is much better than on the video version.
I heard the original Italian version in 1966 when I was 18 and loved it even though I didn’t understand a word but It stayed with me Only just found this version today. Understanding the words makes it even more poignant for me,
A great melody and lyrics so relevant today. Thanks for your comments.
I Remember this song so well. I was 18 and left the Country for the City too start my first Job. Now many Years later the Country is mainly Tar and Cement, where I came from . 🌹
Wow, I was so surprised to find this song today on UA-cam. I remember this song so well from years ago, but the words describe the world today. Songs from our youth in the "60s and "70s bring back so many memories. Wish the world was as I remember it.
Glad you enjoyed it. A great song with lyrics that still ring true.
I was in my Dad's Barber shop on Warren Dr. Detroit Michigan. I was 9 years old in 1966. When I heard this Song, only heard it one time, but determine to fine the song someday. I did in 2010. By typing the words. SOME VERY STRONG WORDS. I wish to, the places. That I went to eat where the real deal and safe.
Just loved it then...still love it now..how true.
It's an Italian song: Il Ragazzo della Via Gluck (Boy from Gluck street), made by Adriano Celentano (he, 83 years old, is like an institution in Italy). I remember the French version, La Maison où j'ai Grandi, performed by Francoise Hardy.
wrong I wrote this songin 1937. The Italians stole it off me.
@@waiata216 You were ahead of your time. Possibly even ahead of yourself.
Françoise Hardy also did the Italian version with a French ending. She was very talented. She passed away two weeks ago. RIP ua-cam.com/video/gbx8ylWZTzQ/v-deo.html
One of the first 45's I heard after getting out of the Navy. LOVED this immediately and went downtown to buy it. Verdelle had an incredible voice and the lyrics are so true for the time. In my old neighborhood, a new highway destroyed it!
I remember. One of my favorite songs from 1966. I was 17
I was 9, working at my Dad's shop.
This song was one of my favorites from long ago. I have been searching for it for years. I’ve seen our city change just like this song depicts. 🥰💖😍
This is easily the best of the two versions released back in 1966. The lyrics really hit the mark and are so relevant to today's world. Thanks for your comments.
ONE of a kind, first song I heard that was not a love song, but what strong words.

A brilliant performance from Verdelle Smith. It never charted in the UK. So many great songs got overlooked in the UK. It boggles my mind.
It was a great recording, . .. yes, but without much airplay. I think I heard it on Top 40 in Minneapolis, MN, for about 1 week in 1966.
A brilliant performance by a great singer
love this record. and is more poignant. And true some 56 years later
Everything changed when I went home it was all gone.
Wonderful record. Should've been a bigger hit in the States.
Yes, a superb rendition of a great song that's been a favourite of mine for many years. Thanks for stopping by!
Love the dip and the trumpet parp.
Me, my Brother and Sister All Loved this song. I heard it was a hit in Boston, MA area.
Yes, a true favourite. A near perfect vocal interpretation by Verdelle. Thanks for watching/listening.

I can I.D. with the lyrics ~ Coming from the green country paddocks to the "Big Smoke" ~ In my case the out-come is now 21-years on, is one liberating experience! Great Song! Thank you to you and UA-cam for the Posting (-:}
Definitely a favourite with lyrics that are so relevant in today's world. Thanks for your comments

Great song
Kari Tapio covered this in Finnish as "Asfalttia ja sementtiä"
I’m such a city girl and this song makes me feel guilty
Great lyrics and a greater vocal. Thanks for watching/listening.
Sounds a little like Dusty Springfield in parts. Number 2 in Australia, but did little elsewhere including the States.
