Yes and no. I am Kenyan and we are your toughest competitors. If I was to choose between the two, I will be split into two. Nothing can separate my love for the two.
And back in the pack was a young Daniel Komen, who the following year would defeat Haile at 5,000 and set a mind-boggling and still-standing record of 7:20.67 for 3,000 meters. What a difference a year makes.
I reckon he could've gone even faster but probably didn't want to risk injury. You can tell he's comfortable at that high pace but I think there is even more left.
Steve Ovett opined during the victory lap that nobody would touch this record for a very long time, except for perhaps Haile himself. But as it turned out Daniel Komen broke it soon after, as did Haile again, and then Kenenese Bekele (which turned out to be the one to last 16 years).
That's true ! He even said from 800m to 10.000m. But i remember the year before this when Geb set his world record at 12.56 in Hengelo on 5000m, and shortly afterwards met Morceli at 3000m in Monte Carlo and lost 12 sec in the final 600m when Morceli set his world record at 7.25. I think Morceli lost all motivation after his olympic gold in Atlanta -96 and that's why he started to decline so fast after the olympics, and that was the primary reason he never ran 5000m again.
You don't see a WR get smashed by this much very many times in history. Chepkoech in the women's steeplechase did something similar in the past year. Geb just showed how superior he was in his time.
I'm Ethiopian and I ran 5k in 17 mins. Where I live (in East Canada), I'm considered a special long distance runner. But amongst Ethiopians, 5K in 17 mins is probably bang average for those who can run.
Vengo del futuro a este video y solo les digo que en 2004 bekele rompería este tiempo con 12,37 y en el año 2020 un ugandés bajaría el crono en 12:35 me regreso al futuro en el año 2033
A decent 5,000 time doesn't mean you know anything about Haile and whether he doped. And there's no such thing as "EPO's." EPO stands for erythropoietin. Singular. Just because someone is much faster than you does not mean they're cheating. The list of people who have run faster than you is very long. Haile was tested endlessly over his career, so in all likelihood, he did not dope.
Mr. Evermore, You no nothing to what you allegedly speak! I ran that time in 1980, not recently when it was much faster for that 5,000 meters as I was a senior in College. Obviously, you did NOT absorb that fact! The list of "cheaters" goes on endlessly and just research and investigate how many World Class athletes were caught by the USOC, IOC, and International Track & Field agencies in the Olympic Games and World Championships. In 2012, there were 228 athletes caught and suspended or Banned for life for IPO's, Steroids, and EPO. So there are your hard core Facts, Truth, and Reality. Its your problem if your in denial. I was a World Class runner and nothing you state will convince me otherwise, as I competed against these "Cheaters"! When you run a 29:33.60 10,000 meters, a 1:05:16 second 1/2 Marathon, and a 2:18:16 Boston Marathon. I competed and raced for New Balance, Etonic, and Kangaroos National racing Teams for four years straight out of College. I competed against the BEST and Fastest in the World, and dealing with Ignorant and ill-informed people like yourself is laughable and a derision to the Running World.

Even though Kenenisa Bekele broke his records, Haile, in my opinion, is the best athlete which our country (Ethiopia) ever produced.
It's up for debate
Gebrselassie definitely inspired Bekele to run better
He had style.

Bekele takes the cake. His plethora of XC WC Golds, and his 2:01.41 Marathon at age THIRTY-SEVEN, tips him over the top for me.
The most amazing feat ever in the history of track, in my opinion.
Thanks EPO
