It is so inspiring and wonderful to see him at the height of his powers! He ran those last 6 laps or so all alone and had to make up time! Yes, 3:59 for the last mile? ASTONISHING! The greatest runner ever and a great man. I saw him in Boston indoors a few years ago when he ran the fastest 3000 on U.S. soil and I cried like a baby.
@ 7:15. Imagine if that other runner hadn't moved slightly out of the way for Haile in the inner lane. It's the little things like this that could determine a WR or not!
He is breaking the world record for the fourth time in the 5,000m (Henglo 1994, Zurich 1995,1997 , and Helsinki 1998) after his compatriot Kenenisa Bekele broke the record at Hengelo in 2004, and still the record is held by Kenenisa for the last 15 years and counting..
The guy is simply the best, and I proved it right here. His pace setters dropped out early, and he was left running alone for the second half of the race. Running next to someone or behind someone is 100% easier than running alone, and yet he displayed comfortable strides the entire time (sorta). The announcers were totally writing him off, and he still pulled through.
This is beyond inspirational. Despite the commentator (might be Seb Coe not sure) doubting him the entire time he did it. Just goes to show, that even the best have their skeptics and critics. I understand the announcer was just doing his job and it did seem unlikely at the time to run that fast for the last 3 laps but... 3:59.36 for the last 4 laps...whoa. And years later he's still putting up scary times in the Marathon...you're amazing Geb.
Even today, almost 20 years later, nobody is running close to that speed. Gebrselassie, Bekele, Komen and Tergat were all better than the 5000 runners of today. I don't know why.
+pukulu It's a strategic race. You can get some very slow paced races which tends to be the trend these days, when Farah won 10,000m at the Olympics in 2012 the lead pack did 5,000m in 12:50... which is about 20 seconds faster than second place in this race
I wouldn't accuse Bekele, Gebrselassie, Komen or Tergat of doping, although it's not out of the question. Just a couple weeks ago in the 2016 olympics Almaz Ayana ran a time so fast in the 10000 meters that suspicions were immediately aroused, but Cheruiyat's time in that race was also hard to believe. Genzebe Dibaba's coach was detained due to blood doping allegations and could not be in Rio de Janeiro, so it appears that blood doping is not yet a thing of the past.
@@Stacie45 ---fast forward---Daniel Komen's 2 sub 8:00 2miles & 7:55 3200! Sub 4 -1 mile is rather common now a days-over 500 Americans so far............Bekele runs sub 4 on his 3rd 5000 mile!!!
@Cmastamega That would be great, except for one thing: the current world record is 12:37.35 by Kenenisa Bekele. 12:38.54 would be the 2nd fastest of all time.
Does anyone have the video where Daniel Komen ran his 7:58 2 mile. I've wanted to see this for years and I have not found the video anywhere on the internet. If you have it can you please post it!!!!!
Does anyone know where I can watch Bekele's 5000 world record? I've searched youtube all up and down and the only vids I can find aren't enabled for the United States.
The truth is slowly coming out, now that people are finally realizing the E. Africans have been able to avoid all out of season testing for three decades, unlike everyone else in the world. Jama Aden, Gabriele Rosa, Jos Hermens (Geb's main man) and the rest are a bunch of vile turds, doping athletes to the gills. Geb was one of the filthiest cheats of all time, an incredible shame because he was so popular for so long. And now it turns out it was all a lie. He was just a great responder to EPO and other drugs.
Dear Bemo: With hard work and once-in-a-generation talent like his, Haile did not need to dope, not to mention the environmental factors such as having to run every day to school and having had unlimited access to altitude for most of his life time. You're a sad man who denies arguably the greatest runner in history.
Amazing how Haile made the commentator eat his own words, he kept saying that a sub-4 minute mile was beyond him, glad Haile proved him wrong and made history
They do for some big races (i.e. Midwest Distance gala, one person usually takes the runners to halfway at 4 minute pace). Then again, this was a meet set up as a WR attempt by one man whose best time was over 25 seconds faster than the second best man.
"Even if he runs a 60 here he would need a 57 second final lap and I think that's beyond him"..... And then that's exactly what he does:) Total announcer ownage!
Well, it depends. In high school, national record times are around mid to high 13's. Like I think for 2012, 13:58 or so was the national winning time for high school cross country by Edward Cheserek (spelling?), who is only a junior, going to be a senior this year.
@fungames2 because you don't see someone like gabresellasie that often. If you noticed, he was lapping everyone, which puts him at least a minute ahead. 13:41 is at least what everyone else was running
Unlike sprinting, you don't just run balls to the wall every race. From both a mental and physical standpoint, its extremely difficult to run at a near-world-record pace out front all alone, even if you are capable of running that pace. It's much easier to run in a pack and then kick for the last lap or so. This is why almost all distance world records these days are planned out ahead of time with designated pace setters. Haile knew he was gonna win, it was just a matter of what time he got.
Eric , Sorry that you thought I was aggressive as I was not trying to be so . It is just that you made a statement that was incorrect . He is probably one of our great runners but John Landy, Herb Elliot and a couple of others are probably as good or better . Just a little hint for future reference , please base your statements on fact for if they are not based on fact they are merely your opinion and like arse holes we all have one of those . ( sorry not being aggressive just having a joke )

That performance is just unbelievable. He makes me wanna go out on a track and do a few laps
An absolute legend, he will always be remembered as one of the greatest runners ever.
The GREATEST
YES The Greatest
Haile really pushed the limits to what was possible. Sub 12:40 in 1998 is just absurd. No fancy tech, no fancy shoes. GOAT!
Greatest I have ever seen. At all distances too. His attitude was a joy to watch. Big smile always.

In 2003, he ran 12:58 as a split for the second half of the World 10K, doing much of the pacing himself. Yeah, I'd think 12:50 is accurate enough.
