Hello Peter! Thank you for watching and posting a question. Ok the Johnson motor may be able to plane the boat if you're by yourself. If you bring somene with you it is not going to happen. If you plan to bring someone with you I recommend getting a used 9.8/9.9 outboard. If you still would like to use the 6hp outboard and the boat still does not plane, getting a propeller with a smaller pitch may help. As for the drain plug, if you have the boat on your trailer, unplug the drain plug and as you drive forward the intetia should move the water back towards the plug and come out. The drain plug should remain in place when in the water.
Hey Erick I followed recommend outputs and after your review I picked up the SD385 13’ boat I have a 6hp I saw your review on water you got it to plane in 10 seconds but my Yamaha 6hp revs out didn’t plane I got a 8.5”x6.5” about so I was thinking of moving up more pitch for speed what do you think? As yours was able to plane but I found out my trim was wrong I was missing a trim pin now it’s in but before I go back out I wanted your opinion. Thanks ! Keep up the vids Bro!
I'll give you my honest opinion. Try what you can without spending money. If needed then yes change the prop to 1 level higher pitch. If it's reving very high and not a lot of speed is coming out then that prop is meant for a bigger boat. Probably used on a sail boat.
Sorry im late for the party. Just got my boat and waiting for my motor, tomorrow. So did you ever try a dolphin thingy on the motor to help with planning? I used to have an inboard outboard and a dolphin worked great to achieve plane faster.
What about 7.8x6 do you try it? Maybe go to plane with 2 people and luggage for fishing? Or speed must be under that speed, we need for plane? Sorry for my english, i hope you understand me....
I do understand yes. It is possible that the 7.8x6 may cause the engine to over rev in a small boat. It could work as a back up motor for a larger boat with that propeller.
Hey man im watching your videos for almost like a month , you are the best, i got a saturn 15' and a 4 hp 4 stroke mercury and just upgrade the prop and carburetor for 6hp, just tried once, just ordered the launching wheels and hopefully going this sunday to the water for second time.

Hello Omar and thank you for watching! A 8hp outboard should be enough unless you're using it on a heavy boat. If you are lacking in power and want to give the outboard a bit more umph thena prop that gives more torque may help. Doing this will reduce your max speed but will increase the ability to get into plane faster. For example my Tohatsu with the original prop 7.8.8 would take me to 17 mph but when I changed it to a 7.8.7 the max speed was recuded to 14 mph but now I could get into plane faster and fight swells better. As for your exact outboard, may I ask what year it is? 4 stroke or 2 stroke
I reseached only a bit and it says that a 4 blade prop would do the trick if you're looking for more torque off the line but again at the sacrifice of top speed. I'll see if I can find any links to one
I have stumbled onto a vast world of information. There are quite a few propellers available for the 8hp Yamaha and aforementioned four blade prop is not suited for 8hp outboards. I bleive it to be best if you visit a boat dealer near you and ask them what you'll like to do with your boat. I personally got my outboard from onlineoutboards.com and they recommended the prop I am using. I don't think they sell Yamahas though.
Hello Vasil and thank you for watching! The boat without the metal floor is 120 pounds. With the metal floor it is 170 pounds. I purchased the inflatable floor that is 10 pounds saving me 40 pounds in total.
Hello again Erick! I was finally able to find an oportunity to get my Saturn SD330-W with Tohatsu 6hp motor out on the water with some friends. I was able to get it on a plane only by myself, but not with another person with a combined weight of no more than 350lb so I think I am definitely going to try the lower pitch propeller! Can you tell me where you ordered yours from and how difficult is it to install? Also would it help if I change the propeller AND also install a hydrofoil so potentially getting the boat to plane with 3 people? Thanks in advance! Duc,
Hey Erick, I have a 12 ft MARS with a new 9.9 Honda outboard. The 4 blade prop seems to drag. What recommendations can you make in regards to hydrofoils and/or possible change in prop. I called my dealer and they recommended a 3 blade 9.25 x 10 prop. Thoughts.
Hello there and thanks for leaving a question. I believe the dealer is telling the truth on this one. The 4 blade props are made for thrust and not speed. Having a 3 blade should help. Hydro foils help getting the boat to plane a little faster but I have never used one yet mainly because I ride by myself most of the time.
Pipo, love your videos, pregunta, we just bought a 10 foot dinghy with a 2005 9.9 Honda 4 stroke, it’s slow as balls as feels like low rpm, previous owners put a 4 blade prop, what should I do to fly and plane, I don’t care about fuel consumption, I just want to go from point A to B in 5 minutes, not half an hour
Wow that's slow for a 9.9. It is possible that the pitch on that prop is too high. I am not familiar with Hondas so I need to do some research and I'll get back with you.
Hi Eric, saw you nice video. Would suggest installing a high quality induction tach as you don't know at which max wot rpm is motor revving up with one or 2 up. With new 7 pitch could be over revving the motor and not knowing anything about it. A Tach will tell...
Yeah it over revs. I can't go over half throttle because the over rev limiter kicks in but that is the reason why I needed it. It actually pushes the boat with me and one person into plane.
Hi Eric, quick question, with 6hp motor, what can be better, replace the propeller for 7.8x7 to get on plane faster and loose some speed or keep the 7.8x8 and add hydrofoil ?
Hello there!! I'll be completely honest with you, hydrofoils bring the best benefits on motors of 10hp or higher. Smaller outboards benefit more exchanging the prop and making adjustments on the trim. The outboard has some trim slots and I put mine on #2 slot.
@@ErickMartinSucre ok sounds good to me, but i'm goint to try the 7.8x8 + hydrofoil and then 7.8x7 + hydrofoil (#2 slot)and see what happens and ofcourse with two people in the boat, thank you so much.
@@ErickMartinSucre thanks A lot, i learn a bunch from you, 2mph is nothing since you cant usually go top speeds anyways when sea is choppy, i ordered same propeller, thank you
@@ErickMartinSucre agree, I just have a 4hp with that prop as a kicker and it still pushes a 1200lb boat 5mph with the main motor still down for steering. If I take it off to use it on a small boat it with still be well suited for than too!
Hi Erick, I have a 6hp Tohatau and have found that in my Zodiac Wave with 2 people I can't seem to get on plane at all. I've watched this video a few times and noticed that the 7 pitch reasonably helped you plane faster. I've wondered what the results would be with a 6 pitch prop for my application. Yes!!!!!!!! That was my issue to begin with. I think the original prop is a 7.8x8 and the one I use is a 7.8x7. It makes a huge difference. I would not go lower than that for it'll make the engine rev to hard.
I changed my prop for a 7.8 x 7 and also added a hydrofoil. tried it today for first time. amazing results 👏. before I changed prop I was struggling to get about 5 knots let alone on plane. now I'm going about 14 knots and on plane.....so happy thank you for all your informative videos.
Glad to be of service my friend. Have an awesome time out there and be safe. If you have Facebook, feel free to share your adventures there if you like. The Muddy Feet Oasis is the name of the group.
Hello Gonzalo! If you lower the pitch it will go slower but will give the boat more "Push" or "Torque" to move heavier loads. For example, the original prop of my Tohatsu was a 7.8x8 and it gave me 17mph but only by myself. When I brought someone with me it bogged down and would not get into plane. I changed the prop to 7.8x7 with a max speed of 14mph by myself but now I could get into plane with an additional passenger with me going 10mph.
Brother, I have a similar lifestyle. I love the water and I'm always out on my Achilles 8ft SIB with a 55lb trolling motor fishing around the shores for years now. Erick Martin Sucre ha that’s funny... do you put it in your trunk or do you trailer it to the lake and put it on the back of the boat? I am having issues with mine bouncing around on the back of the boat and I am afraid it will damage my transom.
@@houston33344 Well I use it on an inflatable that I deflate, roll up and put it on my Prius. I place the outboard right next to the rolled up boat. Now that I think about it I should make a video on how I do it

Hi Erik, I have done this and it does make a difference! Quick question, has your 6hp tohatsu got the intake under the cavitation plate? Mine is on the cavitation plate and as I get up and going and the boat starts to get going, i get cavitation and the engine stalls... Have you got any idea how to over come this please?
@@ErickMartinSucre it got up on the plane today and as it was going like a bomb, it just started slipping, revving high, all speed dropped and no power. Then it got water back round it again and started to move slowly again.
Erick, I loving the videos! I'm getting an air deck 330 with v floor. I'm yet to decide on a tohatsu outboard - 6hp or 9.8hp. I understand the pros and cons for both but have been caught out by off-water convenience over on-water performance in the past.
Erick I checked tohatsu outboard manuals , they list all the available propellers for each engine. Also I found a formula that calculates the top speed for every propeller, engine rpm and gear reduction ratio. You can easily verify your top speeds with your stock prop and different pitch props. worked for my suzuki 6 and your 2 different propellers on tohatsu 9.8
based on your boat weight, FROM LIGHTEST boat TO HEAVIEST boat, tohatsu 9.8 recommends following propellers. (of course your saturn air floor + only 1 person onboard is the lightest combination possible) (light boat) 8.9x10 - > 8.9x8.3 -> 8.5x7.5 -> 8.9x7.0 -> 8.5x6.5 (heavy boat) remember, your original propeller was 7.5pitch & you reached 16mph, then you tried 8.3 & you reached 19mph if you had used 10pitch, you would get 22mph
the theory is simple : pitch is the distance in inches travelled by 1 rotation of the propeller. however due to slipping in water ,the real distance is reduced by 20% for 3 blade propellers also, engine rpm and propeller rpm are not the same thing, propeller rpm is reduced by the gear reduction ratio, which is 2.08 for tohatsu 9.8
theoretical top speed for your 9.8tohatsu, at 6000rpm, 7.5pitch propeller , 2.08 gear ratio , in mph is (7.5inch * 2.54cm/inch * 0.80) * (6000rpm /2.08gearratio * 60minutes) ÷ (100000cm/km) ÷ (1.6miles/km) = 16.5mph
theoretical top speed for your 9.8tohatsu, at 6000rpm, 8.5pitch propeller, 2.08 gear ratio , in mph is (8.5inch * 2.54cm/inch * 0.80) * (6000rpm /2.08gearratio * 60minutes) ÷ (100000cm/km) ÷ (1.6miles/km) = 18.7mph
I had no idea what cupping a prop was so I looked it up on Google. I can see cupping helping increase speed and lower RPM's, this would be helpful on stronger outboards I think. You're welcome to give your input and experience.
Senor Sucre - Love the videos that you're doing on the Tohatsu 6hp motor. Question re changing the 7.8x8 prop for a 7.8x7. I see you get on plane much faster. That's cool. What is the top speed? Do you still get 17mph like with the 7.8x8? Gracias amigo.
Hi Erik, I have a new Yamaha 6HP paired to a 10’ inflatable - very very similar to your current setup. I just finished the break in, but am struggling to get it to plane with 2 normal adults. The bow just rises and stays up. We are averaging 6mph WOT at displacement speeds with 2 aboard. No fun at all. I tried a few runs with just myself aboard clocked about 14mph once. I didnt stay WOT for too long to see what the max mph could be. Seeing that you had good results with your prop change, what prop would you recommend for me? Currently my OEM 6hp comes with 7.25” x 8.25” prop. Knowing that I’d rather get on plane sooner, my oem choices are either: 7.5x7 or a 7.25x6.5. My motor is rated for 5500 rpm.
I would say the 7.5x7 would do the job but if you could on your next run try and have the other person sit in the front and punch it. There is a chance it may get into plane that way.
Erick, you are the best. Deeply appreciate the time and effort you’ve taken. I’ll try out the 7.5x7. It looks like it should work. I’m surprised at the current 8.25 pitch. Perhaps it’s meant to rev lower to protect the engine. Basically right now there’s almost nothing from 3/4 throttle to full throttle.
@@srileo Yeah the new prop will being all the revs up but I usually get into plane by half throttle. Also check the elevation pin and make sure the propeller is in line with the bottom of the boat and not in an angle. I found out that putting the pin on the 2nd slot slot on my Tohatsu aligns it with the bottom of the boat.
Hello there Jimmy! Glad this video helped you in any way. Changing the prop made a big different. It was either that or buy bigger, heavier and more expensive outboard.
I beieve I got it off of Amazon. Let me see if I can find it. Please check the spam folder on your UA-camr account in the event you don't see the link I will send you.
I will not lie to you. I have not tried a Hidea outboard, so I do not know which pitch would work. If possible, look at the original prop that came with the outboard and see what pitch it has. If you are having a hard time getting to plane with it, I'll say try one pitch below the original.

I'm sitting at the rear with the tiller. I'm just getting huge ventilation and surging engine. I'll have a friend with me in a few days. I'll let ua know.
What in the heck?? Hmm, maybe a hydrofoil may be needed. There are some online that are not expensive, but will require some drilling. I ended up putting one on mine because it vented while using my zk380 kaboat.
Only when using the internal tank. Everytime I was done with a trip, I would shut off the gas line and let the motor run out of gas to prevent gum up. The problem with that is that the motor does not have a primer bulb so you have to pull on it for a while. Once I got an external tank I no longer had that issue since the fuel line has a primer bulb

Yes, I put one on and it does make a difference
What about 7.8x6 do you try it? Maybe go to plane with 2 people and luggage for fishing? Or speed must be under that speed, we need for plane? Sorry for my english, i hope you understand me....
I do understand yes. It is possible that the 7.8x6 may cause the engine to over rev in a small boat. It could work as a back up motor for a larger boat with that propeller.

Hi nice video. what prop. would you recommend for Yamaha 8hp? Thanks
Great video but what is the weight of this boat? Is it with inflatable floor?

I see a few 3 bladed props for it however I do not know which pitch you'll need.
My best bet is to find the original specs for a 2005 9.9 Honda Outboard and it may have the prop size there. Gonna try it and see what I can find
If you look at the propeller on your outboard it may have some makrings showing what the current pitch is.
Erick Martin Sucre thanks man
Hi Eric, saw you nice video.
These motors have over rev protection ,the ignition is cut if the rpm exceeds its max limitation
Wheres video on how you changed propeller? Thanks for sharing

Torque vs horsepower. More torque to push heavier boats, but sacrificing top speed

Hi Erick, if I put a propeller with step 6 for example, it would be even faster, or is it not
Hello Gonzalo!

@@jonathanrae6917 oh yes, that's where they are, but it should be no cause of engine stalling. That is interesting
@@ErickMartinSucre it got up on the plane today and as it was going like a bomb, it just started slipping, revving high, all speed dropped and no power. Then it got water back round it again and started to move slowly again.
Hmm. That has happened to me whenever the prop catches water weeds or debri.
Erick, I loving the videos! I'm getting an air deck 330 with v floor. I'm yet to decide on a tohatsu outboard - 6hp or 9.8hp. I understand the pros and cons for both but have been caught out by off-water convenience over on-water performance in the past.
Thank you!! If the weight is no issue then the 9.8 is an excellent choice. The 6hp is 60 pound with all the liquids in it and the 9.8 is about 85
Erick I checked tohatsu outboard manuals , they list all the available propellers for each engine.
(of course your saturn air floor + only 1 person onboard is the lightest combination possible)
(light boat) 8.9x10 - > 8.9x8.3 -> 8.5x7.5 -> 8.9x7.0 -> 8.5x6.5 (heavy boat)
remember, your original propeller was 7.5pitch & you reached 16mph, then you tried 8.3 & you reached 19mph
if you had used 10pitch, you would get 22mph
formula for top speed is as follows , results are in kmph .
we divide the result by 1.6 to convert to mph , or divide by 1.85 for knots.
the theory is simple : pitch is the distance in inches travelled by 1 rotation of the propeller. however due to slipping in water ,the real distance is reduced by 20% for 3 blade propellers
also, engine rpm and propeller rpm are not the same thing, propeller rpm is reduced by the gear reduction ratio, which is 2.08 for tohatsu 9.8
theoretical top speed for your 9.8tohatsu, at 6000rpm, 7.5pitch propeller , 2.08 gear ratio , in mph is
(7.5inch * 2.54cm/inch * 0.80) * (6000rpm /2.08gearratio * 60minutes) ÷ (100000cm/km) ÷ (1.6miles/km) = 16.5mph
theoretical top speed for your 9.8tohatsu, at 6000rpm, 8.5pitch propeller, 2.08 gear ratio , in mph is
(8.5inch * 2.54cm/inch * 0.80) * (6000rpm /2.08gearratio * 60minutes) ÷ (100000cm/km) ÷ (1.6miles/km) = 18.7mph

Erick - I see that your speed was 14 mph with the new prop. Are you going to leave it on?
Unfortunately no, my speed drops to 14mph. I got a 9.9hp outboard and I still use the Tohatsu more often because it is lighter and easier to use
If you have a heavy boat I recommend getting a 9.8/9.9 outboard. I got one out of curiosity and rarely use it lol
Hi Erik,
I have a new Yamaha 6HP paired to a 10’ inflatable - very very similar to your current setup.
I may need to do some research on this one to.give you a proper answer
I would say the 7.5x7 would do the job but if you could on your next run try and have the other person sit in the front and punch it. There is a chance it may get into plane that way.
Erick, you are the best. Deeply appreciate the time and effort you’ve taken. I’ll try out the 7.5x7. It looks like it should work. I’m surprised at the current 8.25 pitch. Perhaps it’s meant to rev lower to protect the engine. Basically right now there’s almost nothing from 3/4 throttle to full throttle.
Yea i did get my friend to sit up front and punched it. The rose up and that was it. Didn’t get on plane, so dropped back to dispacement speeds.
@@srileo Yeah the new prop will being all the revs up but I usually get into plane by half throttle. Only when using the internal tank. Everytime I was done with a trip, I would shut off the gas line and let the motor run out of gas to prevent gum up.
