- In this video I commemorate my 2 1/2 year ownershipt of this amazing outboard. I paid 1200 US dollars back in 2018 and it is worth every penny. I have done so many videos and gone to so many adventures with it that it has become a permanent staple in my gear collection. Hope you guys enjoy this video.

I just bought a used 2019 9.8hp 4 stroke, can't wait to try it, thanks for making the video.
That's a nice one too!!!! Good choice
Hi Erick just found your channel, have the same motor (4HP) as a backup for my main motor. Glad to see it's been a great motor for you. Keep up the great videos.
Thank you kindly and yes what a motor it has been!!
That’s a great motor review. Thanks.
My pleasure and thank you for watching!
Thanks for the review , very helpful
My pleasure. A good little motor
A bought the Evinrude version, for a RIB, a few weeks ago. So far, I love it...
These small little outboard are really something. Glad to see you're happy with yours. Evinrude is a good brand as well.
Great vid! Great review!
Hehe! Glad you like my content Travis
@@ErickMartinSucre Awwwwww Erick! 😊🤗😌Absolutely! I sure do! It's great, fun, informative, and much more!
Fantastic motors and ultra reliable, I have the 15hp and just wouldn't be without it.
Agreed. I got me a 9.8hp recently. Keeping both motors
@@ErickMartinSucre Handles the choppy waters well here in the west coast of Scotland, wish we had the sunny weather you get but summer is on its way.
It's all good. You get the beautiful mountains to look at
Thanks for posting
My pleasure, and thanks for watching.
Great motors, I have the 2018 mercury version lol, same thing. They run amazing, mine is the kicker motor for my bass boat, and it moves the boat pretty well. I use Seafoam in the gas. 1oz per gallon.
Excellent video bro! Greetings from Arizona
Hey!!! That's awesome I did not know sea foam would work as gas stabilizer
Hows the motor vibration using it as a kicker? It being a single cylinder.
It vibrates, but not that badly.
Nice looking engine.
Thank you! 5 years and it's still going strong
Thanks for the sharing Erick! :)
My pleasure and thanks for coming by 8-)
I bought one today, ready for tomorrow 🙌🏻
Very nice!! They are virtually indestructible good choice.
May I ask where did you buy it? and how much you paid for this motor? thanks.
I also have a 6HP but an Yamaha. All great and reliable motors
Yes indeed! Great Japanese engineering
Hey man, Excellent video!! I just ordered my Bris 14.1 ft kaboat. Would you recommend pairing this boat with the tohatsu 6hp long shaft (20") or the short shaft (15")? Love the channel, subscribed!
Thank you! Short shaft are best suited for inflatables
@@ErickMartinSucre thanks, Erick! Keep up with the great content, you're helping me out a lot with my first outboard motor purchase!
Glad I can be of help
Out standing your the best #Honda
Thank you kindly!! 8-)
I just hit 100 hours on my 2020 model in 4 months. These motors get a bad rap, but it's been reliable and very fuel efficient.
Yes I agree!!!! I heard of some having 5k hours on then and still running.
@@ErickMartinSucre the motors where redesigned want to say mid 2009. They removed the expensive CDI box that can fail and replaced it with magneto similar to lawn mowers. There is no Spark advance, or rpm limiter by doing this but spark generation for coil has been simplified. No complicated electronics, just pull and go In theory the motor with oil changes, impellor, thermostat changes could outlast the boat and operators. I had a 1984 Suzuki that with exact same setup it still ran great when I sold it this year.
Very informative videos, im looking at the saturn zk430, do you think a 6 hp will push that boat just fine?
Nice choice! The ZK models are my favorite. As for the speed, the 6hp will push it nicely but if it's just you alone. If you bring someone with you, you may need a 9.8hp Tohatsu instead.
How far will that internal tank take you? We are looking at buying one for our 12 foot boat. Great video!
On the flat water surface, 7 miles. On rough waters maybe 4 miles. Getting a 3-gallon external tank helps a lot.
Thank u
My pleasure 8-)
Do you put fuel treatment? And have you cleaned the carburetor yet..just bought mine yesterday, cant wait to get it.
Great question. Yes I use Stabil fuel treatment and no I have not cleaned the carburator at all. Here is a quick tip: When you're done with your trip unplug the fuel line and let the outboard run dry. This will in turn keep the carburator dry and clean. Run the outboard dry while in the water of course.
Hey Erick, I just got one of these used and your oil change videos are very helpful. I have one issue with mine, the outboard doesn't idle on neutral when I push in the choke. Got a fix for this?
Possibly a dirty carburator
Dirty carberauter from the person before using ethanol gas which gets clogged up in the ports. If you can use non ethanol and if you do have to use ethanol make sure you use ethanol treatment or fuel stabilizer. Doesnt effect the motors performance you made a good buy
im buying the new one 6HP for summer for ocean should be good enough.. should last me over 5+ years or more since ill be using it for when its fishing season
These little engines can last you a lifetime with basic care. Great little motor, so far I've owned mine now close 3 years and still going strong.
@@ErickMartinSucre wow come to think of it now you are right it will last way longer and i take care of my things and always maintain it with the best oils and care.. nice to see how far of a range on the inboard tank and gives me an idea what size external gas tank ill be needing for my needs..ill be good with a 3 gallon since ill probably only go about 20 miles out the most and then back..
@@thatonebeone Oh yeah a 3 gallon will suffice. I've done about 40 miles in the water with just half a tank. Mostly on plane.
@@ErickMartinSucre is it ok to have gas in the internal tank and usethat for back up just in case you run out of gas on the external 3 gallon which likely wont happen in day of use but just for emergency
@@thatonebeone I used to do that but I ended up never needing it and cleaning that gummed-up old gas is a pain. If I ever plan on taking longer trips, I'll just bring an extra 1-gallon tank as backup. Some of my viewers do that on their 8hp+ outboards.
I would buy it if I knew it, but I just bought the Suzuki 6hp.. it's still on break in hour... lol... I don't know how is it but it ok at this time.. I may look for it but it 9.8 hp like the one you had...👍
The 9.8 is a little heavy but not impossible to handle so far.
Hola erick good videos my men God bless you , remember jesus love you my bro .
Thank you kindly and God Bless you as well 8-)
Great for video were did you buy it would like to buy one
Thank you! I got it from onlineoutboards website. They are based in Tenessee I think
Fantastic! Do you still have the 9.9?
I sold it. The damn thing was too damn heavy but this little 6hp has been great.
Hello Erick! Did you ever consider the Yamaha 6hp and why did you chose the Tohatsu over it? Thanks
Yes. I considered Suzuki, Honda, Yamaha and Mercury/Tohatsu. Tohatsu has the solid reputation and best value for your money.
i have the mecury 4hp version, pulls my inflatable and my 12 foot aluminum along pretty well, I got it up to 10mph by myself in the aluminum boat
10 mph is pretty sweet cruising speed. I usually cruise around 12mph
@@ErickMartinSucre yeah usually with my wife and I and our gear we hit about 7, but its a 4hp, its not gonna be much higher
@@jacobbrown9753 It gets the job done and super reliable
@@ErickMartinSucre sure does
Эрик, привет.На мой взгляд сильная вибрация. Как ты думаешь?
Без капота слышен рев двигателя, поэтому
I've got one of the same age and in that time had to replace the carb and now the gear lever
has broken which will need a strip down. I therefore don't have the same experience
as you. I'll replace it with a Honda.
Oh wow! Looks like yours was a lemon. That sucks. Hope the Honda gives your a better experience.
I think I know what happened. Mine is kept indoors while not in use and I run the carburetor dry after every trip so as to not let it get clogged. Yours may have been left outside exposed to the elements when not in use. I believe they do sell a cover that protects outboards when left outside mounted on a sailboat. After you finish a trip, unplug the fuel line from the outboard and let it run until it dies. This will prevent it from getting clogged to hell and having to clean or replace it. Hope this info helps with your new outboard.
Eric how are you. You are my to go for practical info on small outboards. Do you use regular gas that contains 10 percent ethanol or do you recommend using rec90 for best long term performance. I have a mercury 2.5 four stroke that I'm breaking in and I'm not sure which is the way to go? please give me your honest opinion about this subject. I dont mind paying a little more for a gallon of rec 90 if will prevent any gunk building up in the carburetor. thank you in advance for all you help. we couldnt do it without you!!!!!
I would have said to go regular if you had an external tank because you could always unplug the fuel line and let the engine run until dry, keeping the carburetor clean. Since the 2.5 likely just has an internal tank, ethanol-free fuel would be your best choice.
@@ErickMartinSucre you are the man. couldnt do it without you broski!!!
Anytime
ctdvargas , since you don't have an external tank, you have another problem to take care of. whatever fuel you use, there will be water accumulating in your internal tank. that water comes with the humidity or wave spray through the fuel tank's air vent.
make sure you siphon all the fuel tank into a cocacola bottle time to time, let's say every 20hours, and observe any blurry fuel-water mixture.
@@boatsandoutboards9070 this is something I hadn't considered. Is there a solution? Perhaps an additive you recommend?
Hi Erick. Thanks for the video. This may not be anything you can help with, but I have a similar 3 gallon gas can for my inflatable boat with an outboard motor, but I am unable to store the gas at my current residence due to the fire hazard and I don't have a garage/shed. Do you have any friends who have to store gasoline away from their home and know what they do with theirs, or know of any solutions? It seems that if you live somewhere where you can't store your gas, you're out of luck!
That sucks. I currently have it below the outboard stand in my room.
@@ErickMartinSucre Yeah it turned out to be a trickier problem than I realized it would be. Even local nearby storage centers or parking spaces for rent won't take it, as gasoline is normally on their banned items list. My 9.9 hp mercury is too fuel efficient so I always come back with some gas left in the tank- will need to find somewhere to store it safely!
@@NDfan369 disguise it as a cardboard box lol
@@NDfan369 When you get back, dump it in your car's fuel tank
@upspirate that would work but I don’t even have a car right now! I’m living in a city, which is a limitation in this case. I was able to pour it into a friend’s car last time but need to find a long term solution
I just got a 2002 Nissan 4 stroke 6hp, is pretty much the same as your motor? and if so what kind of oil do they use?
I use 10w30 Royal Purple. It has good water inhibitors and great lubrication. The lower gear unit uses basic gear oil.
Will it plane with 2 people I have a 4hp mercury and will be upgrading to a 6hp with hydro foil attatched .My 2.7m v keel sib planes with me at about 15knot sat forward with a 7 inche prop
It's possible that it might. I manage to 0lane with a friend of mine bit no gear just us 2
I am looking to buy the same engine, do you know what kind of Shaft Length is required for the Saturn Kaboat?
Yes, short shaft or 15 inches. The same goes for other roll-up inflatables.
I try to buy same motor but on the link you sugest on the video is not able can you tell me another webside i can buy a boat and motor pleasee i will thanks a lot 🙏
I bought it on this site onlineoutboards.com/
You can also try your local marine shops and see what kind of selection they have.
Have the same engine, but I am new to this. Can you show how you connected the extra tank?
I don't have a video showing that but I'll see of i can find one
Even though this video is for an 8hp outboard, it is still the same ua-cam.com/video/1opCpFQwVL0/v-deo.html
@@ErickMartinSucre Thanks Erick.
@@feldgrauesehrenkleid My pleasure!
Hey Erick, it's me again. Does your Tohatsu 6HP propeller spin in neutral?
Hello again!! Yes it does a little and there is a reason why. You see, the drive shaft is connected to a gear inside the gear case that its always spinning and stirring the gear oil constantly when on. This in turn causes the prop to move a little but there is no force behind it though since you can actually stop with with your hand.
Does this motor needs battery to start or only needs gas?
@@Thomas-kc5wo No battery needed. You pull cord to get it started
I have Tohatsu 6hp engine and I have a problem. When engine warms up to working temperature white smokes comes from water. on any gears and RPMS. And the smell is not good. What could couse this type of problems? Not a lot of smokes but everyone can see it when i am going out of the shore. Do you have any advice where to search the problem?
Initially you'll have some slight amount of oil in the cylinder. This happens when you lay the motor on its side. It does not hurt it but this can happen. Also, when you pump the fuel line, some extra gets burnt out while warming up as well.
No problems at all. Both my 6 and 9.8hp do it.
I like Mercury and Tohasto but Today I would buy the Suzuki df6 I think they are very light, quiet and excellent quality as well!! What do you think? Have you seen them?? They are awesome bro!!
Yeah, Suzuki, Honda, Tohatsu/Merc/Mariner, and Yamaha are a solid choice
Regulasion de balbukas al motor
Yo no e tenido problemas con las valvulas.
...for the $2,000 Cdn I paid for mine (Merc-badged), it's probably the best quality item I own, considering what I paid for it...look at the throttle cables, for example...makes the old 2001 Yammy 4hp 2-stroke look cheap by comparison...a crying shame that the generator kits are incredibly spendy, and only factory-available on the long-shaft SailPro model..
Yes, they are of solid quality. This little motor has been stellar and reliable.
OMG you should be hitting rocks at all
I do mainly because I don't pay attentiont to shallow areas
Did you have a chance to compare 6hp performance on different size boats?
Some people claim that with a 210cm (7ft) boat they can reach 20kmph (12mph) , but with a 330cm (11ft) boat they can reach 27kmph(16mph)
I have a 270 and I saw 25kmph(15mph) maximum.
Yeah, it all comes down to weight.
@@ErickMartinSucre I mean, they say larger boat goes faster. Did you observe such a thing?
@@boatsandoutboards9070 Not really. I get about 16-17mph with my Saturn SK385XL Kaboat, and around 15mph with my Saturn ZK380 Kaboat
@@boatsandoutboards9070The ZK model is bigger.
@@ErickMartinSucre kaboats are longer, thinner and lighter compared to standard wood/alluminum floor boats , but still you get the same speed. So ,the myth is busted. No matter which boat you choose, you get approximately the same speed with the same weight.. as you said, it all comes down to weight
I bought the white one. Which external gas tank and hose you recommend?
Mercury/Yamaha one. Here is the link amzn.to/3oXptgw
@@ErickMartinSucre thank you for sharing. I had a question do you know if I can keep my gas tank 1ft away from the outboard 6hp? Also I will be using your set up do I keep the bleed screw open while the engine is running or how do you set it up I’m new to this.
I keep my tank near the middle of the boat, so a foot away is fine. Not sure what you mean about the bleed screw.
Ok. Ya my gas tank has a vent line screw that’s On top of the gas cap should that be open when the engine is running?
Yes, it let's the tank get air as the gas depletes. Close it once you are done for the day
does she have a shear pin for the prop?
No not this one.
Hi did you buy the outboard from new .
Yeah, I purchased it back in March of 2018. It's been with me for close to 3 years now, a really solid motor.
Do you know anyone using this on a sailboat?
I've used it once on my friends sail boat. It's not fast bit it does get you to shore.
I have it on my 23 ft sailboat ( weight 1500 lb) and frankly don't like it. Firstly, the carb needed replacing recently and then the gear lever snapped off ( it's plastic). I think Honda or Yamaha have better outboards. Max speed ~ 5 kts and fuel consumption seems ok.
7 days to go lol
Haha
I love this little outboard.
If I go Tohatsu Im going propane.
I've heard the technology has not been perfected yet. Some folks report leaks and startup problems.
@@ErickMartinSucre leaks is no good
Nope! Maybe in a few more years, the tech may improve
Hey, I have the same motor. What external gas tank and fuel line/connector do you have? If you have a link that would be great. Thank you
Sure thing: amzn.to/3ASBcBt
Both ends are the same so they fit on the tank and the outboard for Tohatsu/Nissan/Mercury and Hangkai 6.5hp 4 stroke
