That would definitely be better than no protection at all. I didn’t have a brake either. I clamped the aluminum to a big piece of angle iron and worked a 90* bend into it that way. The way you are talking about would give it protection on the sides and would also give you something to bolt the foam to the boat with (sandwiched).

Think a flat plate with no side fins would work ok?
