Amazing video, an in depth guide on how to get started in blender, the amount of detail in those few seconds animation clips put all throughout the video, it so engaging and it slowly allows the viewer to visualize it so well! Keep up the great work.
Not only was this video genuinely useful, it reminded me of a long lost childhood game I forgot the name of! Blinx the time sweeper was amazing and i've always wondered where some of the oddly familiar music you use in your videos came from. Thank you so much 😭

What a great approach with the videogame analogy, Smeaf! I used to play a lot of World of Warcraft, but I never thought about how the quests and leveling up really work to dive into the world of not just Blender but 3D in general and even any other skill anyone should dare to learn! Great video, as always! 🔥🙌
In an amazing twist of fate I stumbled upon this in the middle of absolute frustration trying to model a snail and I'm glad I did. Still fighting this snail, but I have the drive to keep going as well as adding in what I learned from this video. The biggest hurdle for me at the moment is sharing my work, I've always been that person that doesn't show a painting until it's perfect (and now learning 3d my ass is getting kicked repeatedly...every day 😅) but I also know I need to share to grow, so going to start sharing my pieces as I go along knowing full well they are super amateurish and one day I can look back and cringe and be so thankful for how far I made it. Sorry for the absolute ramble, I just wanted to thank you even though I now have an insane urge to play skyrim
A big problem with this system is you don't know what the milestones are on your map, the things you need to learn in order to reach your goal. If you did, you probably already know it and are already there. If I want to model characters but know very little about the concepts regarding this then I cannot plan out a path for myself to reach it. They only thing I know is that I want to model and texture characters. Now figuring out the first steps isn't really that hard, you get yourself familiarized with the program, it's UI etc but beyond that, no friggin clue. I've followed blender guru's donut tutorial and I've modeled a donut and a plate which was doable with step by step instruction, but I have no idea what to tackle next. I don't even know what my daily practise is supposed to be. What am I supposed to model next? Or do I even need to start with modeling something else, maybe there are others things that are more important? I don't know any of this which leaves me stuck. BTW That is not what a habit stack means, that's just being consistent. A habit stack is when you have an activity (something you always need to do) and saying to yourself that you're always going to do X after this activity for a certain amount of time. Since you always need to do the initial activity you should always do X and progress towards your goals. For example: If i have eaten breakfast I will always go for a walk for 20 minutes after. The cue of ''breakfast'' is now connected with ''walking''. Saying to yourself instead: ''I'm going to work on this every day'' then... well you're just lying to yourself, lol.
That’s the thing, with tutorials you only learn how to do the stuff that they show you. Too often without telling why this and that technique, they just tell you use that modifier, these numbers without telling you what they do or why these numbers exactly. What you really wanna learn is the principles behind soft surface modelling and hard surface modelling techniques and how to do it in blender. Skills that will apply to anything you wanna make
This is just wonderful goal setting. The first part is the vision of your blender experience. Then you over arching big goals then more specific goals to achieve then then your plan on how to do it. It can also add in the schedule.
Smeaf, I remember watching some of your videos last year when I was getting into Blender, I enjoyed them but believe that this is your best one by far! Couldn't be more right with the "pit of dispare" as that's where I am at the moment, really wanting to get back into it again so after this video I will jump back down the rabbit hole 😅
I finally completed a 9-month bootcamp learning Maya and Unreal to get a job in 3D design. Coming to find out that only HALF the jobs I was look for used Maya and Blender was favored hit me like a ton of bricks. I near had a panic attack every time I opened the blender app to practice because it was way too different to comprehend. Fast forward to today, I have learned the basics after painfully pushing through with repetitive practice. Still, it doesn't feel like I know anything. This video really helped to change my perspective. I was taught to go the normal route and the incentive to finish would just be the satisfaction of having learned something. I've never played Skyrim, but, your message got through. That doesn't work, and I need to start to gamify it. Thank you!!!
This is such an informative and comforting approach to how to learn Blender. Thank you for sharing your experience, I definitely think this going to help many people, including myself! Keep up the good work💪💯
I find the most valuable content online (ew not content the most valuable VIDEOS and TUTORIALS online, yeah that's better)- are the ones where you take the approach of "what would[are] you going to do?" And actually set an action for the viewer to find out yourself with your knowledge. As well as and VERY important- You are so genuine and have a great timing in humor, great lighting, great editing, great everything man I'm hooked. And for that, I am thankful to have gotten this retrospective insight Smeaf I tip my hat and offer a subscribe inside for when I exit college I shall try
I was in the pit of despair or whatever, I could do THINGS but I couldn’t build myself up from it so this video is nice to reevaluate my reasoning and use that as a way to figure out what I have to work on from now I’m at the stage where I’m following tutorials but when I try to do it myself I feel so inefficient
This is what i have done, but on different's softwares, now i could understand why it was easy for me and thanks for re explaining it to me. Nice room by the way.🤘
The most valuable video I’ve watched in years. I’m actually closer to the music side of things, but I can see how what you’re describing also applies to music making, or any art form for that matter. Thank you for all the effort you put into this video. It shows.
Thanks for this wonderful video, friend! We often forget why we do what we do and most of the time it is what keeps us moving forward. To learn Blender or anything else. Thank you and I hope I can start learning Bender soon.
My experience with Blender, I subdivide every topic I wish to learn, searched about the best courses about every topic and ask to google gemini organize the content by complexity, now I'm following that list, help a lot the things and the sense of progress , hugs from Brazil
It was REALLY nice of Smeaf to take time out of his day to sprinkle in an in-depth Blender learning guide in his "What is Skyrim" video 😂 Never really knew what the game was or why people love it more than actual family members/friends, now I get it 🤣 Seems like a fun game I might one day pick up and play! 💝👍🏽
Hey guys, I’m at half of the video. And I agree working everyday and get a discipline will make your skills blow up. But please note that it takes time and don’t be to harsh with yourself, you will also need sometimes to take a bit of time for you and to go out of 3D. And it’s ok, you also need to take care of yourself if you want to reach the top !
Hey dude., before I lose time on this, I would just like to thank you for posting this video. I would. love to dip my toe into Blender. As you described, I started by watching tutorials, and copying the projects as best I could in order to learn. I put aside my own ideas, goals, and passions (briefly) to grasp techniques and concepts that I knew that I would later use. Then I hit "the WALL". I had watched so many different videos with artists teaching differently, or skipping important basics, that I became overwhelmed and defeated before I really even started one project of my own. Like you, I'm a gamer, so I began with Blender there but FROZE with a head full of confusing technical JUNK. Much love, Smeaf, for showing me that that is kinda NORMAL and a pattern that can be broken, for me or anyone.
This video is great. Despite my 5k hours in blender, I can always start using these ideas in my learning. Cleanest editing NA. Have a diddily good one Sminth
Bro this video is so deep 👍🤓 most who use blender won't have a clue what you just drop man bro your going deep so happy to see someone making videos like this please keep sharing and growing 🙏..... Time to watch it again 😂👍🤓 see ya
I'm learning to organize my day more with tmypur videos that with any other motivational videos I've watched. You explain it so easily and like if we're doing quests iin real life like we do in games. I love it. Thanks for the tips
Hey love your videos! I also studied in SAE in Jordan, and started 3d with blender in 2017, learned Blender in my extra time and I fell in love with it... my method of learning it was just random, I've spent time doing sculpting, texturing, modeling, etc. I applied what I learned into actual work, like I used After effects to create videos and then I started slowly combin my Blender knowlige to video, VFX, products and more.
This is the most helpful video I've ever seen on how to tackle a project, thank you so much for making this video!!! The only annoying thing in the video (and no, it's not the Skyrim references) is the silver play button glitching in the background
My domain is 3D printing. I just created my first 3d printable model. It took me over a year. It's interesting to me how closely my learning methodology (at least for skill-based learning) is to what you've presented here. I think it's near exactly what you recommend. 😅 Anyway, this methodology can apply to ANY skill-based learning. Learning Blender is not unlike learning its own programming language.
Thank you for this video! I think it’ll be the perfect template for me to work off of. I plan to go the full nine yards and build out a game for Blender, similarly to your video. Once it’s done I’ll post it to r/blender and go into more details there. I think it’ll be a very useful tool for me.

This is an amazing content, a very in-depth explanation of a very concrete way of learning Blender! I recognize myself in those steps
Great stuff as usual, nice to see an approach to learning that actually makes sense. Although it got a bit confusing down the line with all the levels, steps and sub-steps. Need a cheat code to remove the fog of war from the world map. :D
I took the path of Udemy learning, that’s how I can finally find blender useful but the texturing part in it actually learned through UA-cam tutorials.
the problem with this is i cant just have a "niche" to achieve what i want i have to learn everything. lighting, animation, character creation, sound design, modeling, rigging, sculpting. you take any one of those things out.... and I will never see the goal i want. no i dont want partners or to share any of the burden. the entire goal does not include a single other person.
I had the same thought. but i think its still helpfull to start focusing on a niche. i like to make a game in Unity all by myself. i dont need polished high end grafiks for my idea. but it will help to start learning a single thing up to a point till i think im familiar with it before going to the next "step"
Same. Want to game dev on my own and have something presentable to hire or recruit others in the future to help. First I need a foundation across the board. So this is kind of a help.. but not the answer.
i know that it's very unlikely you'll see this comment, but this video helped me a lot. ive been really struggling with motivation in blender and i rely way too much on tutorials. after this video i realize i had no direction with where i wanted to go, hopefully after this i can really improve and gain confidence in my own skills again. ill be coming back to this video a lot i think.

Couldn't be more right with the "pit of dispare" as that's where I am at the moment, really wanting to get back into it again so after this video I will jump back down the rabbit hole 😅
Thnaks to you! I watched this a few hours ago and I'm dragonborn with infinite powe and max level!!❤
Great video, thanks 👍🏻
Side note, I like the AR “UA-cam comments” text you used. I’m learning AR development, which is actually why I’m here 🍻
Thanks!
It's actually tracked in with Blender!
This is how I have been learning blender for films trust me it works smeef knows what he is talking about.
can't believe the intro. SAE literally my dream college. you make me doubt get in there.
Anyone can get in there, it's just whether you want to take that route or not :)
Omg you didn't just explain how to learn blender but how to learn anything, learn any skills and even achieve any goal ! This is an awesome video !
I love the Wii music, soundeffects and the hand :D nostalgia is hitting me
the amount of effort put into this video is insane!
One of the best learning guide video I have ever watched on this platform! Thank you!!!!
This is quality content, I mean so much work and effort has been put into this video
This is such an informative and comforting approach to how to learn Blender. Thank you for sharing your experience, I definitely think this going to help many people, including myself! Keep up the good work💪💯
I find the most valuable content online (ew not content the most valuable VIDEOS and TUTORIALS online, yeah that's better)-
are the ones where you take the approach of "what would[are] you going to do?" And actually set an action for the viewer to find out yourself with your knowledge. As well as and VERY important-
You are so genuine and have a great timing in humor, great lighting, great editing, great everything man I'm hooked.
And for that, I am thankful to have gotten this retrospective insight Smeaf I tip my hat and offer a subscribe inside for when I exit college I shall try
YOUR EDITING AND ANIMATION FOR THIS VIDEOS ARE CRAZY, i need to learn how to do that
I love this video!!! Mostly because the first step is so general. You can use it for anything you want to do. Thank you
Ps.: Love your Skyrim links
Honestly, this roadmap could be applied to so many aspects of life. Its really good. I'm definitely going to give this a go.
What a content. This is applicable to all skills out there, and it resonates so much with me. (currently stuck in the Dunning-Kruger hole)
I was in the pit of despair or whatever, I could do THINGS but I couldn’t build myself up from it so this video is nice to reevaluate my reasoning and use that as a way to figure out what I have to work on from now
I’m at the stage where I’m following tutorials but when I try to do it myself I feel so inefficient
It shows.
one of the best video you have made!!
Thanks for this wonderful video, friend! We often forget why we do what we do and most of the time it is what keeps us moving forward. To learn Blender or anything else. Thank you and I hope I can start learning Bender soon.
My experience with Blender, I subdivide every topic I wish to learn, searched about the best courses about every topic and ask to google gemini organize the content by complexity, now I'm following that list, help a lot the things and the sense of progress , hugs from Brazil
this is such a good video not only about learning blender but learning really any medium of creating - thanks for this !
It was REALLY nice of Smeaf to take time out of his day to sprinkle in an in-depth Blender learning guide in his "What is Skyrim" video 😂
Never really knew what the game was or why people love it more than actual family members/friends, now I get it 🤣
Seems like a fun game I might one day pick up and play! 💝👍🏽
Love your videos, even I'm a ''Mayan'' myself lol. Always a satisfying and fun watch!
Good explanation of how we learn things, not just for blender, but can apply to many things.
Not sure if this video helped me with blender or helped me understand skyrim more.
This style of editing is awesome. Good video, thanks!
Amazing video as usual. Took me a hell of a lot longer than 1 hour to navigate the UI though, more like a month.
Even when I'm getting lots of new information from your video , the way you present it makes it super engaging.... especially the joke/meme part 😂❤
comic timming ...........
nailed it brother
This is one of THE videos
Thank you for making 🎉🎉
Yes, this video is philosophical and one of my new favorites
The second he said the WAY method, I nearly cried. Beauty
This is the most helpful video I've ever seen on how to tackle a project, thank you so much for making this video!!!
The only annoying thing in the video (and no, it's not the Skyrim references) is the silver play button glitching in the background
this is brilliantly made video
plus you make it not boring to watch it till the end
thanks smeaf
Skyrim is actually a really good example!
Bro just made a video that applies to every aspect of life. I am gonna use this to navigate in the worlds of blender and bumble.
i know everything after finished donut tutorial, and everyone else still figuring out
not gonna lie this is the advice I needed, thanks man
Glad I could help with my silly little video 🫡
My domain is 3D printing. I just created my first 3d printable model. It took me over a year.
It's interesting to me how closely my learning methodology (at least for skill-based learning) is to what you've presented here. I think it's near exactly what you recommend. 😅 Anyway, this methodology can apply to ANY skill-based learning.
Learning Blender is not unlike learning its own programming language.
Honestly, this framework is true for learning anything! :D
Man that's all i need in one place thanks and you have great editing skill too :)
Great stuff as usual, nice to see an approach to learning that actually makes sense. Although it got a bit confusing down the line with all the levels, steps and sub-steps. Need a cheat code to remove the fog of war from the world map. :D
this is a
really great video Smeaf! I really thought i was alone in all of these things. especially with ADHD struggles. keep up the great work!
Thank you.
From the bottom of my heart, you have opened my eyes
i know that it's very unlikely you'll see this comment, but this video helped me a lot. ive been really struggling with motivation in blender and i rely way too much on tutorials. after this video i realize i had no direction with where i wanted to go, hopefully after this i can really improve and gain confidence in my own skills again. ill be coming back to this video a lot i think.
Thank you so much i just saved this on a new playlist for learning. Well. Anything i guess? And its so well explained! I really needed this :)
