I've had to restart learning blender like 5 times now cause I didn't know what I wanted to do with it and just clicked on every tutorial under the sun. Not the best start to learning something new, but restarting a 6th time finally let me have some goals in mind. Excited to finally see a long term goal.
Remember that for skillshare, the first month might be free, but they charge you after 2 weeks so make sure to cancel it before that, just in case you are only looking to try it out.
Just starting out in Blender after years of having it downloaded, thanks for making this! All of it feels like not just a great guide for starting Blender, but for starting with any other artistic skill!
Progress is... going! A lot of it's an issue of trying to find the motivation while working on so many other hobbies, but each time I come back to blender, it takes less time to remember the shortcuts, less time to get something other than the default cube. And the advice in here did actually help me out with the art programs I mainly use! I would recommend learning blender, but keep in mind that you'll learn quickest if you already know what you're going for. Character modeling, 3d animation, environment rendering, etc. If you have an idea of what you want to be able to do by the end, you'll ask more pointed questions. More pointed questions means better answers and guides!

One of the biggest problems with learning 3d on my own has been finding a learning path. There really are no linear paths here and UA-cam tutorials often skip the "why" and "how" things work and instead rely on the result to speak for itself. The problem here is that this doesn't teach you anything. It's also frustrating that there is no supplemental documentation to carry away at the end of a tutorial or lesson to study and learn from. Instead, you have to skip through the memes and hope you understand the workflow because these videos aren't geared towards people becoming professionals. It's easy to re-post other people's tutorials (just look at how many copycat videos imitating Ian Hubert's style) or just re-post the skimming of the documentation for another "hey, guys!" video to earn dollars on UA-cam. Once you realize this you can easily find the areas you are deficient in and improve those skills specifically.
I can do shit in blender, yet im watching guides on characters, swords, arcs, barriers, pipes, overall modeling to just simply understand the process behind... Im getting the knowledge to start slowly, but still i feel helpless if i try to model something more complex than simple long sword.
I have tried to learn blender multiple times now and every time I would quit at the very beginning. It was frustrating making a mistake and sometimes having to completely restart. However, there is still this urge to learn blender and have fun with it. Watching this video helped a lot with convincing me to try blender one more time. Thank you.

Hi mate. I started learning Blender about 3 months ago and thank you for the video. Some things are frustrating and other things not so much but an enjoyable journey non the less. Animation gets a little tricky in my opinion1 Thanks for the vid!
This tackles the "tutorial overwhelming" issue head on, I've started learning blender about 4 different times, almost got a solid donut render last time, but as pointed out here, I needed the first 3 dumb projects, smaller, simpler, just getting to a point where I'm comfortable with the tools and, more importantly, FINISHING SOMETHING. I'm going back at it with this mindset now, and I've set up an alarm to 2 months from now to come comment here, hopes up!

I'm still learning and growing myself using your ideas for personal development. Although my business is primarily focused on branding and logo design; adding 3D to the visual presentations I share with clients has added a significant amount of value to my work. Now I feel like I'm actually LEARNING the game. The same applies with Blender. Im in a weird situation, I’m a video game animator for my day job, been using Maya for over a decade. I mentor people on game dev (basically help them along the path of making a game over the course of a year). Maya getting rid of student liscence a makes doing the animation modelling and rigging in Maya prohibitively expensive for students so now I’m learning blender, ironically to teach blender.
Everyone else’s beginner tutorials: “do it one step at a time, just make simple objects at first” Him: “to start learning, make an entire game level at first”
I'm in college and we have a subject this semester focused on 3d modeling. Honestly, we are not happy with our professor because he won't teach us anything, he left us to learn the softwares on our own and define what the final project will be. It's lazy, but also it's been fun to define what we want to learn and similar to what you said in this video, and I hope by the end of this semester I get much better with blender EDIT: so the semester is finally over, and honestly I guess I did learn how to get around blender. I'm not sure its what I want to work and deep dive in the future, but I really enjoyed using it for character and product design. I thank the gods of youtube tutorials for helping me through my journey, I learned so much yet I still know so little 🥲
@@derpderp9281I regret not reporting our professor that is kinda like that. I was excited to take the game dev subject expecting to learn a lot. But he just linked something and then after that, he was not present the rest of the semester. He gave us the highest mark in the subj but we didn't learn anything.
Do you have any recommendations for a beginner who desires an academic studying style of Blender? Any books or formal guides on learning blender? Thank you so much!
This should be titled "If I started Blender ever..." Nice video, Smeaf.
Lmao
Would love to see an Editing Tutorial by you :)
Same I’ve been meaning to switch to davinci but haven’t yet
Same
It will happen, not sure when, but it will
I order you to do it.
Please?
@@Smeaf Thank you 🌹
3d modeling is something i really wanted to learn just to make art for my music, i'll try it for a hobby and update you guys on my progress
It's been 2 months is it going good
@@Robo582-n4m i gave up on 3d art and music, i just learn russian and mess up with linux nowadays
Lol only few mins in and OSRS comparison hooked me. Ive played RS on and off 1000x since '04 crazy.
I recently lost my job and just decided to learn blender, I'm one week in and learning sculpting/designing things so I can utilize my resin printer.
Subscribed at the 3rd minute. I look forward to being a Blender Specialist and fly out of Kenya for a job. Lesdo thisss
Everyone else’s beginner tutorials: “do it one step at a time, just make simple objects at first”
Him: “to start learning, make an entire game level at first”
Love the Runescape analogies 😂
I may be addicted again 😂
@@Smeaf One never quits RuneScape. Only takes breaks 🥲
I'm in college and we have a subject this semester focused on 3d modeling. Honestly, we are not happy with our professor because he won't teach us anything, he left us to learn the softwares on our own and define what the final project will be.
It's lazy, but also it's been fun to define what we want to learn and similar to what you said in this video, and I hope by the end of this semester I get much better with blender
EDIT: so the semester is finally over, and honestly I guess I did learn how to get around blender. I'm not sure its what I want to work and deep dive in the future, but I really enjoyed using it for character and product design. I thank the gods of youtube tutorials for helping me through my journey, I learned so much yet I still know so little 🥲
Which college are you in
Your professor sounds either lazy, or an out-of-the-box thinker. He's basically teaching you how to think for yourself, which is pretty good.
I dont feel comfortable sharing what college i attend to, but i swear our professor only gives us links to youtube tutorials. he's a genius i think
@@derpderp9281I regret not reporting our professor that is kinda like that. I was excited to take the game dev subject expecting to learn a lot. But he just linked something and then after that, he was not present the rest of the semester. He gave us the highest mark in the subj but we didn't learn anything.
@Loniyke if I was paying tuition I would be mad too, unfortunately there are many professor like mine who are paid much more and do so much less
My guy dropping the osrs references 😂 I'm just starting out in blender and would love to learn Blender to do OSRS models but with my own style
runescape reference, im in 💯
I started blender 3 months ago
Just now I got how coller ramps work
I love that Donkey Kong 64 music so much. Almost distracts me from the video itself haha. But please keep it
The rs analogies are crazy my irl grind comes from not wanting to be a noob on rs
I need to learn Blender just so I can get this Skillshare commish!
You should write a book like a certain other Blender creator. 😳
It may or may not already be in production...👀
@@Smeaf Oooo cool.

those hard no's are what knocks me down :( but I know I just need to push through. thank you!
Do you have any recommendations for a beginner who desires an academic studying style of Blender? Any books or formal guides on learning blender? I am looking for a straight to the point learning experience with all the technical jargon that isn’t video. Much appreciated and thank you for producing content. 👍
Thank you it really helps
