Had to be impressed with Hot Rod Charlie being there at the end my reaction to the first quarter mile fraction was too fast going a mile and a half. Congrats to connections of Essential Quality.

TRUE! Especially after putting up opening quarter fraction and to remain in front on Old Sandy shows some awesome endurance if I have ever seen it.
Gets me a bit mad that some people think this crop is bad or weak. Even though all three triple crown races are on the faster end when it comes to time. That said, there has been a clear divide on which horses we should look forward to though that could change depending on how some of them develop into their later 3 year old and perhaps 4 year old career.
Hot Rod Charlie set such a fast pace, going 1 1/2 its amazing he finished like he did!
It definitely put the rest of the field away besides EQ

He was kicking so hard to keep level in the stretch too. Hot Rod Charlie was much more impressive in defeat, a very intriguing pedigree as well.
he ran the first 1/4 in 22+ ,second and third 1/4 in 25+ and a mile in 1:12 that's hardly a fast pace. Essential Quality is clearly the class of this bunch with HRC second best.
Never take care the lead in the Belmont...he did a sterling job to finish second.
Now this is an old-fashioned horse race !

He was so caught up in the match race between EQ and HRC that he was calling Rombauer, Bourbonic.
Hot Rod Charlie was almost, if not more impressive in defeat! This, this is horse racing at its finest.

Just a little too fast too early for HotRod Charlie.
The top 2 put about 12 lengths on the field, both had tons of run left at the stretch run. Excellent race!!.

Whichever horse has the longest rest will be the horse that wins the Travers.....and it will be hailed as some significant accomplishment. These thoroughbreds today are a watered down version of their great ancestors. Nothing any of them do today could ever be considered great when you go back and see what their magnificent ancestors did.

My father Jack use to take me to Aqueduct and Belmont park horse racing when I was younger and watching the horse races brings fond memories of my dearly departed beloved dad.

Great pun! But really, Hot Rod Charlie was SO far above the other also-rans that it's essentially an unfair statement. If these two horses are this closely matched (will take some other races to determine that) we could be seeing a rivalry like Easy Goer and Sunday Silence, or Affirmed and Alydar. I do think EQ is the better of the two, but Hot Rod Charlie appears to be a terrific racehorse himself.

I watched both race and started it simultaneously..Big Red was about 12-15 lengths ahead of EQ when he crossed the finish line//
Different era. Allowance horses were breaking track records in 1973. The tracks were all hard and fast.
Secretariat was king but his belmont was run on a much warmer day and faster track to be fair? that time will never be matched, easy goers belmont was ultra impressive too.
@@mikeylikey6176 Good idea - I just did that, and interesting comparison. It was hard to tell the number of lengths because the camera on Essential Quality didn't show the finish line when Secretariat crossed.

Dude I couldn’t agree with u more ., his ky derby ride was a joke,. He was probably on his cell phone in the gate then his left foot slipped the iron . So the 2 horses on his immediate left and right closed in on him after 10 to 12 feet unfortunately. I thought that was an infraction., but I will never bet on a horse ridden by Lose -r-raioooo 👎

Everybody had their favorite, I was there the year Secretariat won the triple crown, and it's different when you are there, at that time, in the past!
Essential Quality would have won the Triple Crown.
1) Kentucky Derby : Bad luck at starting gate.
2) Preakness : Trainer's bad decision.
3) Belmont : Complete Proof.
Great race but I doubt we will see another horse match or beat secretariats time in Belmont

This race was won by the Stradegy played out by Essential Quality's jockey. "Hold Back"...Then "release the kracken"and give EQ his head, and just let Him Run!...What a Beast!!
I still don’t understand Flavien Prat decision to go to lead with such urgency. At worst he would’ve been 2nd in the first half of the race. He only had one horse to beat in the Belmont and he literally handed the race to him. That was a terrible choice in mile and a half race.
He might have been worried about Rock Your World. Letting Rock Your World get the lead would have been a mistake.

Great race. Essential Quality showed up. After watching it back a few times, Hot Rod Charlie came out and stayed out. Quite impressive horse. Kept the lead nearly the entire time. But this was Essential Quality’s race to lose.
The Celestial Sectetariat is further untouchable.
Looking at Essential Quality, he looks like a man running against the boys. He's grown even more since the Kentucky Derby. Definitely Horse of the Year.
Idk horse of the year isn’t a lock. Silver State is making quite a case for that himself.

Trainer Frank Wright said it best on June 9, 1973 and I will quote him, “Secretariat OWNS the test of champions”. All others are inferior.
Haven't heard Frank Wright in a while he bought a painting off of me and tried to get me to come to New York... Belmont when he was training there had a limousine waiting for me at Central Park and I had the lifetime member on Millionaire's row, lifetime racing commissioner driving me up there with my mother we went to every art museum in New York but I couldn't handle New York too many people....so I ended up in Ky to try to SAVE my ole racehorse that had won me 30 races! I trained three race horses for him at Hialeah while he was still in New York doing the CBS TV stakes show, they were all New York stake runners

Actually no, it was advised they put blinkers on him as a 2yr old after his first start when he was super distracted and looking around. He needs his blinkers to keep him focused, that’s what they are for

I like Essential Quality, but every single Belmont since 1973 will always be compared to Secretariats MAGNIFICENT run.
Nothing has even come close to Secretariat in the Belmont , including these horses.

and to think that as fast as this was, and the incredibly fast track conditions....Secretariat in 1973 would have beat Essential by over 3 seconds. 48 years later it remains a stunner.

@@timturner3481 and to think that Lucian Lauren thought Angle Iight was a better horse of the two the only thing is I claimed an Angle Light filly and when she win at Keeneland we were in the test Barn an old doctor Roach told me that all the Angle Lights were bleeders so I guess that's what stopped him ... She was a notorious breeder I cared it with herbs the old Indian way she only paid $49 and when I run her back she paid $45 to run second and she broke down and they hauled her off in the meat wagon her first foal still held the track record for 7/8 River Downs when it closed Ambassadors Image I only claimed her for $6,500

@@montanawarren8462 Lucien Lauren never thought Angle Light was the better of the two horses! Secretariat was the champion 2 year old and Horse of the Year in 1972. Lucien was just as shocked as everyone when AL upset the Wood Memorial. He wound up finishing 10th in the Derby.
Once again Essential Quality proves his dominance. I've now learned that no horse should get into a dogfight with him in the stretch, cause that's twice now he's been in a stretch dual and prevailed

How many times has he run? When Secretariat won the Belmont it was his 15th lifetime start? Same with Affirmed and the same with Seattle Slew...No, I think Slew was making his 12th start at that point.
I just like to put things into perspective because these horses today are nothing like they used to be.

perfect trip & distance for EQ. HRC is a tough SOB. travers should be a great race. I think HRC would win at 1 1/4 miles again vs. EQ. it's just that little bit further that EQ excels at. Curious to see if they try EQ at 1 1/2 miles on the turf.
If I remember correctly EQ beat hot rod Charlie at 1 1/8 too. Any distance over a mile and I think EQ wins.
No horse should get into a mid stretch duel with Essential Quality. This is the 2nd down the stretch race he has been into and won it. Go Eq Go

Racehorses have been getting more and more athletic over the years but it still baffles me that no horse has beat Secretariats time at Belmont yet
It looked to me like Rombauer came in third not Bourbonic but whatever.
Collmus made several mistakes while calling the race.
I knew I wasn't hearing things - he said Bourbonic was third. And I thought I'd lost my tri until they posted the results. For Rombauer to finish 3rd going 1 1/2 miles on 3 weeks rest was admirable.
Impressed really with how Hot Rod Charlie run.. all credits to him.But the best horse this year for me just won it... Essential Quality!!! 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭

The progenies of Tapit have been dominating the Belmont Stakes in recent years. Tiz the Law, Tapwrit, Creator, Tonalist and now Essential Quality....Soon they will rise the statue of Tapit at Belmont Park to honor his pedigree's dominance @ Belmont Stakes.

Knew essential quality would be hard to beat in the belmont, he had a wide trip in the KD or might have won? the second ran an incredible race to run those fast early fractions on a slow surface and still be there at the finish and the front two were well clear of the rest.

Prat lost the race at the start. Inexperience in the Test of Champions. In the final 16th his mount had nothing left. Why? Check out the break. Prat pumps on Hot Rods neck sending to the front. Look at how long he pumps. This causes his mount to run a 22 and change first quarter. Done. No need to send like that in a mile and a half race.
If you’ve watched racing for decades as long as I have then you would’ve known at that point entering the first turn that he’d have trouble fighting anybody off in deep stretch. Plus if you’ve ever been to Belmont--it’s huge. Prat is used to riding sub 23 first quarters in routes in sunny southern CA at Santa Anita.

Agree and disagree with your comments . Prat, Ricardo Santana, and Irad are the most promising younger jockeys out there and if I owned a horse and had a chance to use him I most certainly would. I believe this was his first mount in the Belmont and he probably did use him a little too much in the beginning but I’ve saw much more experienced riders try the same tactic especially Mike Smith and his crazy fractions in several Ky Derbies. I figure trainer wanted him on the lead at all costs and Flavian followed instructions .

I felt bad for Hot Rod Charlie. He tried so hard but just went crazy fast at the beginning. But, man, Essential Quality!!

The better horse one but I'm just saying if I owned hot rod Charlie I would put him down until the Pacific classic. I loved him and this is not favoritism but he ran a bang-up race. If he shakes rock your world early he wins the Belmont. Essential quality was the best horse.
