Sham ran easily 2 of the fastest ever times at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Just happened to come in second to the horse with the records at both tracks. Probably would have run a much more conservative Belmont against a different field, but then again, maybe it was just too far for him, especially after maximum effort put forth the previous two races.

The first day I worked at Belmont. I got a case of beer and sat out on the camera stand at the top of the front stretch. I am an old man now, and I never saw Man O' War run, but I saw Secretariat live and he was the greatest horse who ever ran. I was not a fan of Horse racing until that glorious day when i witnessed history in the making. Of all my earthly blessings, it remains as one of the greatest days of my life. I still get chills watching it. When i watch this i am taken back to a fantasy like trance and remember all the wonderful times of those days for me. I think of my young and beautiful first wife, the colorful leaves and the soft moist dew of a morning. I even feel the strength and well being of my youthful body and the days of fun, love and laughter. This is what that awesome athlete did for me back then. One of the best feeling of my life. It was a surreal time of freshness and life. Secretariat had the power to make a person dream. In many ways it represents a better place in time for many of us. It shows what can be and what is always possible as long as we hold on to possibility. God bless him for filling our hearts with the outlook that we can all punch above our weight and do the impossible. He really did that for millions of us.
