Kevin wondering why the books were demanded. Historically speaking, books were extremely valuable as they were hand written on parchment, taking a long time to write and bind. Usually the book covers were made of leather. All lot of them had illustrations. Pigments for these could be also very expensive, depending what colours were available and what you had to import. There are also a lot of books from the middle ages using gold for illustrations. And as reading and writing was not taught at the same time (Charles the Great could read and tried some writing. But writing was mostly trying.) being able to write a book is a craft that only a few were capable of. So all in all, that's why books were valuable. (EDIT: fixed some grammar errors as writing on the phone is meh...)
