I just moved here with my wife and a lot of people warned me about all the " cons" of Maine.
For me, I'm an introvert who is a homebody and when I go out it's for farmer's markets, craft fairs, festivals and long day hikes. If this sounds like you, you will love it here!
Also, I've never been in a state that is so welcoming to me and my wife (same sex couple). I have lived in Pennsylvania, Texas, Nevada, Minnesota and have visited 48 states. And so far maine has been the most welcoming.

Kittery. Right on the NH border. Nothing personal but not representative of Maine. If you really want to experience Maine you need to at least get up to Portland or further north. I wouldn't want to live up in Northern Maine but you owe it to yourself to get up north of Bangor or over towards Bar Harbor.

@Amputee Marksman I totally agree! It's impossible to make a full representation of Maine from one person in one video. Having vacationed in Northern Maine for most of my life I can definitely agree that there are some beautiful parts of Maine past Portland. Maybe someone who lives up there can make a video of what it's like to live up there haha! I can only speak from my own experience. Still love living in Maine and wouldn't want to be anywhere else....

One thing I have consistently heard about Maine, and I’ve never been there. I have my first vacation up there planned this fall, but I would love to hear from those who either do currently live in Maine or have lived in Maine: I’ve heard consistently that Mainers can be quite insular, nit impolite, but it’s very difficult to get into a circle of friends if you’re not also from Maine. basically that Mainers often don’t really care for outsiders. Any truth of that?

Living in Maine 10+ years. So, three thoughts:
Weather: down on the coast, about the same as Pennsylvania. Tolerable. But winters are long...
City persons: there is an extremely limited scene re: Fine Arts, Films,
    things to do, great restaurants...
Mainers and tourist: truth be told, although folks are very polite and friendlyish, they actually have a
deep hostility to " people from away"
I lived there quite a while, and never developed a deep friendship with a local....all my friends there were not Mainers.

The winters are long and very frigid because it’s colder than other places even colder than Boston. It does rain a lot, and gets cloudy fast like often and there’s not much diversity as far as cultural events or restaurants and the food places that are available they don’t season the food like Chinese food sucks in Maine and there’s hardly any good food that is seasoned right but Portland Maine has some diversity so go there to eat and it is beautiful here in Maine. It’s gorgeous All the seasons and although I live in Maine and I have a house here it is quiet and the people here pretty much keep to themselves there might be a silent racism going on because when it comes to people of different ethnicities they’re not mean and they’re not gonna hurt you or put across on your lawn but they definitely don’t say hello or make an effort to make friends with people of different ethnicity at least that’s me and my families experience. The cops pretty much leave you alone. If you have all your stuff up-to-date on your car, they pretty much don’t bother you regardless of your race, and when you go to work for the most part, Mainers are cordial at work and professional. The food here is overpriced. I feel compared to other states that I’ve lived in and I was an army brat and military wife so I’ve been to a lot of places and the Mexican food is way overpriced out here and so is the Chinese food and like I said it’s not that great but El rodeo is a great Mexican place in Portland. It’s authentic food Chinese food you’re gonna have to go to Massachusetts for that one.😂😬

I think you need to update your knowledge about Portland Maine a little more if you make another video and you really need to rethink about affordable housing as well I'm not speaking for everyone in the state of Maine however from what I've seen in the people that I've met I've lived here my entire life if you are upper class course it's affordable, middle class it's pretty comfortable they can still afford buying houses, however a lot of middle-class are struggling as well and you didn't even bring up the lower class in the streets of Portland they are amazing there is a lot of homeless people and yes I know there's a lot of homeless people around way more other states then here, if you're only looking at statistics then you're one-hundred-per-cent right on the ball with buying an affordable houses, renting wise however a lot of these landlords in the new apartment complexes if you choose to get an apartment are requiring their tenants to have two times to three times the amount of the cost of rent, most artments do not include utilities or heating, there are definitely jobs available however starting rate is minimum wage unless you are actually working in an actual business type place even though some people that have to have two jobs working in office businesses just to afford their homes actual homes not apartments

And if you are of ethnicity background, and you live past Portland, Maine, and you want to raise your kids who maybe of mixed ethnicity good luck finding representation up here, because there’s not going to be a black cop or a black principal or black teachers no there’s no Hispanic people in management. Hardly you will not see them there’s no concerts for Black and Hispanic people there’s no one it’s all 80s rock pretty much Caucasian bands singing all over the place but nothing for Black people as far as live entertainment. Maybe there is Portland that’s what you’ll find some diversity there as far as live music events so for me personally, I like all music so I can attend all those different places, but I just felt odd and alone because there was no one that looks like me in any of those places to hang out at so I didn’t feel safe like , is an off vibe they give you like you’re not welcome but they won’t say it and they won’t touch you or hurt you. you’ll just be alone so just be aware of that. Past Portland there’s no mall they turned it into a flea market. There’s hardly any shopping stores for women there’s very few and there’s like three or four restaurants past Portland like Lisbon, Auburn Lewiston there’s like nothing for women. It’s a predominantly men up here. It’s kind of depressing in Lewiston. If you drive by there it looks really rundown. Lisbon looks industrial looking tractors on the lawn and tires and pools and all kinds of equipment just doesn’t look aesthetically pleasing also most of the Black people in Lewiston or Hispanic people like myself I never see them like I said in higher positions they’re all work in the kitchen or the maid or the housekeeper they keep the black and the brown community at a lower income level so that they have to get on the system. Hence then the mayor don’t take care of the Lewiston city And it’s very trashy looking and yes, maybe the residence don’t help ….. anyway. This is just my opinion and my experience so far living in Maine for over 12 years.

If you can’t find decent food in any reasonably sized city, that’s on you. You’re either a food snob or horrible at finding places. Here’s something to help: Yelp

Maine is nice, but living in Idaho is so much better.

@@MaineWoman1959 Absolutely right. Because I love what I'm learning about Maine. Seems nice and low key.

I’m black, from Philly. Went to Camden, Maine in August. My Airbnb hosts (white couple) were amazing to me. I got a few awkward stares while walking through town, nothing i didn’t expect. Did a boat tour on the ocean, the crew was great to me. While at dinner, i was sitting at the bar alone, looking at my phone, totally minding my business. There was a white guy between 40-50 years old (from Texas) who i caught looking at me, multiple times. I guess he couldn’t hold it in anymore and flat out asked me, “what are you doing here” 😭😭😭😭 i said, “eating”. Although i knew what he was alluding to, i wanted him to say what he wanted to say. He said, “no, i mean in this area”. I said, “visiting”. Looking back, i should’ve told him i lived there. But anyways. As a black man who visited for a few days, i was treated really well by the staff of every restaurant, bar and shop that i went to. But there will definitely be some awkward moments.

One of the whitest states (93%, which is a decrease from just a short while ago) means many of us simply don’t know what to do or how to act around someone with a different look/culture. That said, awkwardness should not be mistaken for dislike. Yes there’s racism here, but by-and-large anyone who works hard, deals honestly, and isn’t arrogant is accepted and treated the same (minus the awkwardness). “Same” means we leave you alone and you mind your own business, But if you need help I’ll be there. In short, anyone is welcome but don’t come here trying to make it change to your preferences.😊
