I love living in northern Maine nice and quiet and for someone who spent 20 years in the Marine Corps I don’t like being around a lot of people and I like being around the outdoors off the grid
I love northern Maine. However, after suffering some significant health issues, that's probably the worst region to live for healthcare. Northern Light, (formerly EMMC) in Bangor is the closest hospital for conditions necessitating any form of interventional surgery for a stroke or heart attack. So, yes, northern Maine is a nice and quiet place to live. But, I wouldn't recommend the northern region for anyone with serious health issues.
I relocated from Conwy in Wales UK, to Maine, near Conway US, 13 years ago and I LOVE it! Like my home town in Wales, I am surrounded by countryside, mountains and lakes, unlike my home town there are no endless green fields full of lambs & daffodils and there are no castles. I love rural life, I enjoy having plenty of outdoor space to grow veggies and walk my pups. I can wander outside in my pj's with my morning coffee and watch the ducks and the loon's on the lake, my pups can wander freely, I can light a campfire and snuggle up under a blanket with a good book, listening to the chipmunks and the squirrels running around. I can watch the boaters or I can head out on my boat or my kayak or my paddleboard. I enjoy the peace & quiet, I enjoy my own company and more than anything, I enjoy NOT having neighbours too close by. I can watch the sun rise and set and I can see the stars because unlike the towns, the lack of streetlights means the skies are clearer. In winter, I get to snuggle up in front of a log fire, watch the ice fishers out on the frozen lake. Sure, there's a lot of snow over winter that has to be cleared and yes it can get cold, but that just makes it all the more joyous when Spring kicks in. Nothing is perfect, but for me, Maine is close to perfect, all I need is fields of spring lambs and the odd castle and then it would be perfect :)
I'm from Bedford UK but live in Lancaster NH now but was in Maine for a while. Driving around it literally reminded me of Wales, except it's filled with trees round here. It's absolutely stunning up here ❤

@@eenebwThe obsession with politics is really messing with the social fabric. i'd say it's a "both sides" thing, but honestly city folks have always been a bit more engaged because they are so many more people around them and issues to deal with. The radicalizing of rural folks over the last 20 years depresses me. I have family way up north in Maine, and I remember how they were mostly invested in local affairs and the weather, and the red sox. And passionate about it. Now I see tons of Trump signs, bumper stickers, weird political t-shirts - mainly about issues they likely never encounter in their day to day lives.

I don't want to derail the good video on this topic, but I see the opposite here in NYC-LI area. "OMG it's so hot!" Yeah, it's always been hot and had droughts and forest fires; much of Long Island was a pine barren. We have indeed had a few records (especially "70 degree day in November") type records, but I go crazy when I hear people talking not stop about climate change when we have absolutely normal 90 degree summer days. Not sure why people suddenly expect forever-mild England style weather Sorry just needed to rant about transplants who don't even know what normal weather is or was like in downstate NY, now declaring it's worst than ever. Quite the opposite in some ways - we've have surprisingly few horrible hurricanes in recent decades. Worst hurricane in modern history was all the way back in 1938 ** caveat being the weather pattern of no rain and higher than average temps that repeated non-stop until late November. Time will tell if that was "weather" or "climate" since short term it is "only" weather but if it keeps happening it will indeed be climate.
I'm not part of the climate crazies crowd but something is up with the weather and personally I think it's a natural cycle but I live 40 miles north of bangor and it's not the same as it was in the 70's 80's as a kid and have pictures to prove it...We might be getting snow but not the Temps to sustain it..
@@ericallen8263 After looking into the historical details you are correct ... Bangor Maine was colder in the 1970s than the 2010s. However the warmest decade on record was the 1930s. Interesting. I will list the average temperatures by decade below 1930 - 1939 = 58.38 1970 - 1979 = 52.67 2010 - 2019 = 55.48
@@ericallen8263 it's not "climate crazies" it is the consensus of virtually 100% of career scientists in the field. And they rely on the fact that weather patterns are quirky by nature to fool folks. As if the climate scientists didn't consider that as a possibility.
Wilderness survival living a ool snow plowing activities for 9 to 10 months out of the year! Car rust from fridges temperatures and salted roadways. But its one of the Most beautiful places in the United States

I have lived in Maine all my life and absolutely love it here. It is quiet, has 4 seasons and very very nice people who mind their own business but help when needed. Whenever I leave the state I experience culture shock- the garbage along the highways, urban sprawl and bill boards do not exist in Maine. The terrible summer traffic is in the southerly most tip of the state- York County ( which is not the most populated as you assert, Cumberland County is) Most Mainers live north of York to experience the calm culture of this state- we avoid that whole area in the summer, knowing it is where most of the tourists are and instead prefer to vacation at family owned lake-side camps. The crime rate is extremely low here and we are fine with the winter keeping anyone who can’t handle a shovel- away. I’ve been to Florida… and am always so glad to come home to Maine.
i moved from the swamps of southern ga . last dec. 3 i could not agree more as for the loving maine its amazing happy holidays good morning and have a amazing day its cold and beautiful

Your assessment of Maine is on point for the most part. My only different thought is there is no way I would want to spend any time in Florida. I have visited there a number of times and saw absolutely nothing that interested me. A flat, over built, boring state with boring beaches and wall to wall highways and strip malls. I'll take any number of beaches in the Caribbean over Florida's beaches any day. There is a lot to do during the Winter in Maine, all kinds of activities and events. Like any other state, if you live in "rural" areas you have farther to go to get to things. Maine is no different. I have visited many other states, Maine is paradise compared to most from what I'vs seen.
Electric Bills are outrageous.....we barely put any lights on and the bill is on average is 200 dollars a month......and ticks are everywhere, in your lawn and on the dirt trails......lets talk Lyme disease ........other than that its a great place like any other
There is no perfect place. You just have to identify where you want to live and make the best of it. There will be disappointments no matter where you live.
It really comes down to how you want to live. I live in central Maine, north of Augusta. My husband and i moved to AZ and lived there for 10 years. He passed away, and i came home. AZ was a culture shock. I didn't care for city living. Everything is on top of each other. I liked the weather most times. Here in Maine, You can live in the southern area and have the city life. The more north you go, the quieter it gets. Winters are harsh and very cold. It really depends on how you want to live. I love my privacy and secluded way of life at my age. As for the tick population, you just need to learn about them and protect yourself. It's no worse than dealing with scorpions, black widows, ants, and roaches. Every state has its ups and downs. I found out that im a true Mainer and wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
Moved to oxford york county line near NH border 6 years ago I love it, couldnt afford a place on the lake but i bought on a state road at junction of another state road with atv/snowmobile trail on edge of property its great (other than cmp electric co. buy a generator youll need it!) the state dot plows the roads. If your buying here and gonna stay year round Id definitely reccommend living on a maine road plowed and maintained by the state its a huge difference compared to the side roads
I feel stuck in NYC but love when I get away to hike in the exact cloudy cool weather in pine forests exactly like you're walking in in the beginning. That's my version of Heaven on Earth! Especially with the pink haze between 3-5PM in the sky
Lived here all our life an make a fair living selling campfire wood in so Maine to campers and campgrounds . After the summer rush is over we head north to get away for a bit . We also do the UA-cam thing twice a week .
great video. ive been living in maine since 2022 and visiting since 2018. winters can be long and boring but also cozy and charming depending on how you see it.
I grew up in Sanford. If you don’t like Maine…leave. It’s just that simple. Maine is home. It will always be home. Time moves on and things change. There’s nowhere better, just different.
Southern Maine is not my Maine. Love it here and when we go south, I can't wait to get the hell out and go home. I don't lock my doors and sit in traffic or pay ridiculous pricing. Most of my relatives live in Boston and they can keep it. Paying to park my car or to go through a tunnel pay ridiculous rent not my cup of tea. 5 bucks for a ten-cent coffee and they live a shorter life according to the statistics. I also think you are much wealthier than the average Mainer, so you have more options then most not nocking you. You didn't get they're by sitting on your ass now that's some Maine talk right there. Good videos have a great day.
I love coming up the house in Wells during the Winter. By August you need a hooded sweatshirt on the beach and in October - windshield and you can enjoy the quiet and sun. After over 60 years in Wells, we know all the back roads during the Summer and where to go. Plus, being a year rounder (part time) get some consideration into restaurants in Summer

Tourists here are minimal compared to FL which is infested with them. I will totally disagree with you about affordability- I have saved on moving to Maine with my insurance on home and auto. Florida is crowded, green all the time, hot, humid and a traffic nightmare...let us not forget the higher insurance rates, property tax and groceries in FL. It is better to rent for a week or 2 in FL if you need the warm, but FL is a cesspool of strip malls and privileged drifters. I am so glad that once I retired from FL that I was able to move to ME and enjoy 4 seasons-the same season for over 30+ years(in FL) gets monotonous. ME needs to bring medical and tech jobs and not more tourism which pays a pittance
Dude, I live in Wells! My wife's job suddenly transferred us here 3 years ago, and it's been a HELL of a culture shock from southern Connecticut. Is there any good Chinese buffet within 20 miles?
@eugenewalton7336 Um....yeah. Wholly disappointing. Even the kids didn't like it after Chinese food in Connecticut, Fitchburg, Worcester, and Canadian Nagara Falls. Honestly wonder if they're even trying around here.
I moved from Merritt Island, FL my home state to Caribou, ME and I haven't been back since 97! My kids all love Maine and say it is where they wanted to raise their kids!! Only thing I wish for is country property and to be able to live off the land!! I love Maine, happy to have 4 seasons (even if its a lot different) than when we moved here.
As someone from Mass (please don't start throwing rocks) I just sold a cabin in the woods in western Maine after 18 years. I love the state and have been going up there for since the 1980's, camping and hiking around Moosehead Lake and Baxter SP. We were considering retiring in Maine, but now that the wife and I are in our sixties and now retired, we decided to bail on the harsh winters. Planning to relocate to a warmer climate from Mass, but definitely not interested in Florida. Looking into the Ozarks in MO/AR, maybe southern Utah.
Southern and Mid Coast Maine is a wonderful place to live. And by the way, the food and local restaurants can be terrific and affordable. Health care is ok but Boston and Portland are not that far away. The locals tend to be somewhat provincial but it is a purple start by and large. Personally, I found the summer heat in Florida and the South much more restrictive and keep you house bound a lot more than the winter cold in Maine. And the boating in Maine from having a row boat to a larger boat is incomparable.

Love Maine in spring, summer and fall. Have a cottage on the coast that we bought in 1995 and its still a 3 season cottage. Taxes have only increased $200.00 in 41 years. How can you beat that! We get to enjoy the ocean, dinning and lifestyle that I could not get on Cape Cod. The locals are the best, though I'm not accepted as a local but they do watch out for us and our property. Best decision I ever made. Now my children and grandkids can enjoy this place long after I'm gone.
I married my late wife back in 1997 she was from the St.John valley Frenchville, anyway after we got married we moved to Maine from my home state of Kansas. Anyway we had two sons our oldest son was diagnosed with severe autism. My wife died at the age of 45 just shy her 46th bithday in 2016.
I disagree about job opportunities, at least for blue collar people. We have an extreme need for talent. In my area electricians are booked for a year ahead. Same with plumbers, contractors, and so on. Admitting housing is a challenge but the work is there
I just read that ME tourism is down 9% in 2024. My husband and I moved our boys to Bangor 5 years ago. Just bought a house 30 min north. Northern ME is way different than Southern Maine. Some of us want to feel a little isolated. Society has been getting pretty sketchy these days.
Been in maine for almost over 10 years from New Jersey .Major culture shock. I do like the slower pace now being older..Im convinced people born in maine do not know what good food is.I did find a few decent places but unless its seafood most food quality out here is lack luster at best. Also for the love of GOD you know the thing in your car on the right side of the steering wheel that blinks left if pushed up and blinks right if pushed down that's only a finger length away .could we please use it lol all jokes aside.all places haves pros and cons .it took a while but I like maine but if your into the hustle and bustle its prob not the place for you
I have lived in southern Maine for over 30 years. I came from southern New Hampshire on the Massachusetts border. Southern Maine is becoming Massachusetts. Woke, crowded and yes there are no people in the trades here. No plumbers, electricians, carpenters, etc. that is unless you are loaded.
Please go visit where you want to live before committing. Visit in July or august. My late husband and I just uprooted and moved to AZ. It's a very big culture shock. Don't expect the same food as here. Weather is nice except it gets Hot as hell in the summer. Housing is very expensive out west. There's a lot of crime. A lot of major car accidents. Plan on spending a lot of money on pest control. Ants, scorpions, black widows, and roaches are a big problem. These states you mention do have their good points, too. Just please research and go visit for a couple of weeks. I moved back to Maine after my husband passed and even though I Hate winter, I appreciate the way of life here and regret moving out west. It was a big mistake.
Let us not forget if you go clamming you must pay for it. You must have a license to do so. Clamming is not always an option due to red tide. You cannot legally go and dig clams. You cannot just go on your boat and pull up lobster or crab traps. It takes years to be able to do that. All freshwater lakes and ponds require a license if you fish. Some saltwater fishing requires a license. Tuna fishing requires a license. It's expensive, I think. That should be mentioned as well as other things. If you go swimming on the coast, make sure you know where the undertows are. People are stupid about that sometimes and lose their life because of it. You cannot hunt here without a license. Everything you do requires a license and most places do not allow tiny houses. Only a few towns allow them. Just saying. People can legally carry concealed weapons here. Most people have guns here. They do not brag about it but most outside the cities have them and I am pretty sure they are in the cities too. Not much crime here. We did have a mass shooting in Lewiston awhile back. I believe that was the first and only one. I hope it never happens again. I feel so sad for the families. Terrible. Some people here are not nice and are hard to get to know. Taxes are bad here. Prices are high. Yes you can find very cheap real estate here but if it's that cheap be checking the foundation. Be smart about it. I do not live in Southern Maine and I don't know what they do there anymore. I did live on an Island off the coast or Portland growing up. Island life is like a soap opera. Not thanks. I worked in the seafood industry. I am a lifer here in Maine. I would never leave the gorgeous state. It has it's issues like any other state except population. Summer people do not bother me. I know we need them here. Most Mainers do. I stay away from high tourist areas. Southern is little Boston. Northern is it's own world. I would never live in Portland.
Another bait & switch realtor offering. I’ve seen a number of these click-bait promos from different Maine (and NH) outfits. And they’re usually coastal community boosters, excuse me coastal realtors, at heart. The title to the video is, well, like this one, “Why I left Maine, etc.”, only to discover one or two minutes in that your guide is in fact a realtor who wants to sell you property in, where else, Maine! I saw the kiss of death, in terms of true intentions, at the 1:54 mark here, when our guide says he makes his videos with his daughter, who, surprise, is a local realtor. Then, switching, the emphasis shifts, and he’s really telling us why he leaves the state he loves “for a few months every year.” And the down low, as if we already didn’t know, is Maine isn’t for you If you don’t like winter. Enough. You get the picture. It’s really an advertisement for the state, and their business; and what they really want the viewer to do is Buy! - while the bait of the title of their video suggests just the opposite. Viewer beware.
I've lived all over the country, Germany, Texas, PA, Saranac Lake, NY, R.I., SE. Mass, and Maine is a pain as far as winter as I get on up in years, but it is the safest place to live around, even in the Sebago Lake area, which is more heavily populated. We have a lot of issues, but a lot less than most places.
@johnc1848 oh ok, yep I pass through Swansea once In a while. Judging by where you've lived I'd make a wild guess you're career military? Just a guess, Germany and TX tipped me in that direction and I like guessing lol

Maine is an unaffordable place to live now. I'm an eleventh generation Native Mainer. People like me and my family are being squized out by people swarming in here from elsewhere.
Central Maine is great, they still get enough snow for winter activities and you can still enjoy a wonderful rural lifestyle without being to far from the big box stores.

Central Maine IS nice of your on the outskirts of the more populated city/town.. The cost has gone crazy $$$.. Augusta Waterville on outskirts is nice.. Lewiston Auburn outskirts is nice as well. It puts you close enough to Portland Boston & other areas of you need to get places (airports, hospitals, other states). IMHO I would not move 20 miles north of Waterville or you will have to travel to get anywhere.. Land is cheap up there BUT it cost $$$ & vehicles rust out quick & forget keeping anything clean. Food cost more. Less restaurants & less portions for your money.. Locals know your from away & compare you.. it's a different way of life
Lived here my whole life and it has certainly taken a turn since Covid. The biggest frustration is people will flea from those areas they voted to destroy, but continue to vote for more of the same once living here. No lessons learned.
Crime in Maine is picking up. Since resortareas have increased and the locals are becoming obsolete. We are being driven out by money. We built a ranch home on 9 acres on a dirt road in 1977. It is now 2024 going on 2025 and multimillionaire homes are going up. It's not unusual to hear on 1 rich home coming down to put 1 up much grander. The rich are stripping the goodness & polluting the land. Sucking out all the water & mudslides erosion being caused by not caring for the land. Roots bushes trees they hold moisture and suck up run off. Take it away and erosion occurs. NO thanks from me. We need to learn to live with what we need and limit the wants. Owning 5 homes is excessive.
Lived in Maine for 10 years and still do. We have a great school system. I love it. Can you move elsewhere with lower taxes but we have great police, schools, winter is awesome. We have plenty of liberals and conservatives. It’s super white so that may be a plus or a negative for you. Hope more people want to move to a most right wing state, don’t let the door hit you.
I love Maine where i live in the country. Good and bad everywhere. But the bad here is not that bad. Traffic is bad year round because everything funnels. But that's the worst thing. Ticks and browntail moths, that can be managed. The cost of living is outrageous especially given the median household income. It is a perfect setup for paycheck to paycheck living for most. A lot of rental property owners are lazy too and they only do enough to get by legally.
😂 FLORIDA.. your joking? I live in Weston Florida and the heat and humidity is so bad you can not leave your home.. think of it as the same effect as cold and snow.. you are trapped inside. ,, my advice go where the weather is mild year round. Or at least not as severe as far north and far south
Maine is very affordable compared to boston and Connecticut. Thats why they are all invading our state to work remotely or retire here. Its a huge problem for our real estate values, health care facilities and infrastructure. Southern maine is now pretty much northern Massachusetts. Thankfully you can still experience real maine further away, for now.
Great video. I've got mixed feelings about allowing mobile homes on any available lots. Yes, they can be more affordable but at the same time allowing them to plop down anywhere can also change the entire dynamic of a neighborhood or town and usually not for the better. Either way, it shouldn't be up to state lawmakers to force localities to comply unconditionally. It's also interesting that one of the State Reps backing the bill is the director of the Manufactured Housing Association of Maine.
What makes you feel you're entitled? If a person, a couple with children for say, can only afford a mobile home after buying land in Maine. Why does that matter? Does God judge people like you?
@@dwaynedee529 Yes, that is a very good point. I don't think anyone really needs to worry much about this new law. Most people who choose to invest in a mobile home can't afford $1M lots near the ocean and if a person can afford it, this law allows them to place a single wide mobile home for example right next to a $10 home. I don't have an issue with this. People who don't want to live next to a certain type of home have the choice of buying the land or investing in subdivisions where they have dwelling restrictions. I think people should have this choice as well. I don't think town gov'ts should be empowered to play a god or king role on what is allowed to be built on residential lots. Planned communities however, is a different story.
So you believe that the government should have control of how and what you live in on someone's property unless you agree with it that's not allowing Americans to have their pursuit of happiness unless you deem it ok that sounds more like you want Maine to become a giant HOA.
I have visited Maine for 60 years. Northern Maine is awesome. Southern Maine is another story. Portland is the armpit of the state. It is an awful place to visit . I have a son that lives there and I can’t wait to leave Portland after visiting him. It’s so woke there and so liberal, they have ruined a once nice place.
Armpit? You are being generous. I'm leaving. I literally can't wait . Reasons, jackass Janet, massholes summer and massholes permanent ergo jackass janet.. and rigged elections.
The sign “Welcome home” will be soon replaced by “land of overpriced houses and minimum wage jobs” now if we can only fit that slogan on our license plates.
I absolutely love the winter. The early sunsets, the cold, the snow. All of it. I moved to Hermon last year, and we are loving it. I do wish we'd get more snow, though. Maybe I need to move further north, like the North Pole.

The radicalizing of rural folks over the last 20 years depresses me. I have family way up north in Maine, and I remember how they were mostly invested in local affairs and the weather, and the red sox. And passionate about it. Not sure why people suddenly expect forever-mild England style weather
Sorry just needed to rant about transplants who don't even know what normal weather is or was like in downstate NY, now declaring it's worst than ever. Quite the opposite in some ways - we've have surprisingly few horrible hurricanes in recent decades. Worst hurricane in modern history was all the way back in 1938
** caveat being the weather pattern of no rain and higher than average temps that repeated non-stop until late November.

There is no perfect place. You just have to identify where you want to live and make the best of it. There will be disappointments no matter where you live.
Yup, you got it!

I've been to San Francisco several times. Sitting in traffic regardless of what state we are doing it in, isn't fun.

Maine is very affordable compared to boston and Connecticut. Thats why they are all invading our state to work remotely or retire here. Thankfully you can still experience real maine further away, for now.
No its not 😂
@@killacram7150 Yes it is.
Yes, I have mixed feelings. The gov't seems to think it will help address the housing shortage but, I'm not sure it is the right strategy.
Discriminate much ?
My state has never seen better days. See my local progress playlist, maybe you'll want to join us! 😎 📈
If I lived in southern Maine I'd move north.
Welcome to Maine now please go home.. born and raised in Maine

Sure Maine is t perfect. But Connecticut? Lol
Try living in massachusetts 😢
Beautiful family
LOS ANGELES---Now its dark by 5.15.
Interesting, I never would have guessed that because they are so far south. Thanks for sharing.
I love Stanford’s Marden’s!
Ha ha ha. yes, it is a popular store in Sanford.
Alas! Maine seems to be, in its way, the "Washington State" of New England.
I absolutely love the winter. The early sunsets, the cold, the snow. All of it. I moved to Hermon last year, and we are loving it. I do wish we'd get more snow, though. Maybe I need to move further north, like the North Pole.
I love New England
An especially long winded intro, then you ask me to subscribe. I made it three and a half minutes into your vid. You'd do better to get to the point. I think I'll pass on subscribing and give you a down vote instead.
Because Fenway is too far away.
