- Maine is often an overlooked state, when one is searching for a new home, but maybe it should be put at the top of the list. The state is full of natural beauty and plenty of outdoor activities. It's consistently ranked as one of the safest states in the nation. It also borders the ocean, but it isn't nearly as expensive as other coastal states, like Massachusetts and Rhode Island. In fact, some communities in Maine are really affordable and safe, so in this video, we're taking a look at five of those cities and towns.

I once met a retired couple in Myrtle Beach from Maine. They went south from October/November to March/April to avoid the winters.
Not anymore...
So they do same as any other rich white couple/family that live here in The New England Area.

It is, but crime is rising and housing has become less available and way more expensive in the last 5 or so years.
Half of my heart was left at Presque Isle and Caribou, Maine; I was in the Coast Guard; yes, there was a LORAN C station there back in the day. I spent three winters during my tour of duty. I retired from the Marshals Service in December 2017, and I am waiting for my wife to retire next year to go back to Maine. Yes, I know about the brutal winters, but COVID taught me to live inside my home, so I am not worried about that. One problem I have is where to live, in the woods or on the coast; I have a year to figure it out. I will consider the towns shown in the video. Thank you very much, and stay safe.

As somebody who grew up in Dexter, avoid it like the plague. Most of the town screams poverty even as of last summer (2022). If you are an outdoorsman I'd suggest more along the lines of Millinocket or even Greenville area, unless you prefer being more solitary in which case there are a ton of options. Oh and as hunterthelord said, buy a sled, a 4 wheel drive wouldn't be a bad idea either.
I would like to choose woods
We spent a week in Maine in September 2019 and loved it. We mainly stayed along the coast, while we were there. We live in central Arkansas and I'd love to have a summer home in Maine. I'd leave Arkanas around Memorial Day in May and not come back to Arkansas until November.

Those are Jordan Hotdogs. My dad imported them from the State of Maine to sell in his meat market in Bristol CT years back. The best Hot Dog there is. I can still get them about $36.00 for 3 lbs is steep for me now. Originally I grew up in Caribou, Maine in the early to mid 60s. I wished i could go back there. I have very bad RA now and have to stay put in Tampa. The VA is taking care of my health needs now. I am in an electric scooter to get around.
What was the name of the meat market? I grew up in Bristol CT.

I have lived in Gardiner for the last 12 years and it's one of the best places to live if you can deal with cold winter weather. The air smells better here too. Nearly all of the violent crime is domestic related, that skews the statistics. It's not uncommon to see someone open carrying a pistol, and concealed carrying is legal without a permit. 98 Maine Law Enforcement Officers have died in the line of duty going all the way back to 1811 which was technically before Maine was even a state.
Yes. Maine is high on my list of relocation considerations. Went for the second time in April and was captivated by vacationland USA.

Getting bad here too bub. Sorry to burst your dream relocation bubble. To bad really, this used to be such an affordable place to live if you were a hard worker and played your cards right. Now? If you're just starting out, you gotta make 70 to 80k a year just to pay the mortgage and bills.

Nowhere in Maine is affordable unless you want to live 2+ hours inland, but then good luck with a job and the bugs!

Grew up in Caribou Maine. Seen it thrive scene it die down when they close Loring Air Force Base. That was a sad day. I live in Tennessee now Tennessee's a lot like Maine just a whole lot warmer😅😅😂
Central and East Tennessee are comparable to Maine. I'd disagree with the western part of Tennessee though. I lived in Memphis and some of the satellite communities for several years; glad I relocated to Maine.

Right? I'm moving to Maine from away because it's so peaceful; I don't want for everyone else to follow me. I think I'll be safer from a crazy influx north of Acadia.
Unfortunately, it is not peaceful anymore in Southern Maine. The influx of people are buying up every available house. It’s too much-there are not enough resources for all the people.😢
My fiance and I want to move to Maine. She is a massage therapist so we need a town with a spa for work. Gardner seems good since it is so close to Augusta. What do you recommend? Thank you!
Augusta is kind of dump lots of crime etc. Being closer to Portland or ots suburbs would probably be better.

Good video. I am considering a couple of cities you mentioned. But the $550k upper quote for Rockland is not correct. There is a $725k beautiful home for sale now in the city proper and one for $1.285M a mile away. Belfast, Northport, Lincolnville, Camden and Rockport are all the same for safety with similar pricing to Rockland.
I made this video in March, and at the time, that was the most expensive one on the market.

It wasn't a stupid comment. I think it highlights how quickly home prices can escalate. An area that's affordable today may be out of reach for an average person tomorrow.

The problem with Maine is the people that live there. Trust me they don't want you there unless you were born there

It seems that the colder the climate, the colder the people. You can keep the beauty of your nature. I prefer the beauty in the warmth and kindness of people.
I moved to Maine last year after living the previous 45 years in Florida. The people in Maine are some of the nicest people I have ever met and it's not uncommon for people to start conversations with me in a parking lot or inside of stores. I think that if you are nice and respectful to people you will get that back in return. I absolutely love it up here!

The only issue with Maine is that it's full of Mainers. Other than that it's beautiful state to visit.

I lived in Maine for my first 30 years. I left & will never go back. I suppose if you move there with money, can afford to buy, don't need a job, enjoy driving everywhere to do anything, don't mind unfriendly people who will make sure to mind your business for you, and love miserable weather, it's probably pretty great. Of course, you can fix the weather part if you can afford to live on the coast. But if you're not a movie star or corporate exec, you probably can't afford to live on the coast.
As you can see from other comments on this video, a lot of folks who live in Maine, especially once you go outside of any of the towns that are dubiously called "cities," hate anyone who they dub "from away." They blame people "from away" for all of their woes. Even in a "city" like Bangor, where they're less hostile to visitors and folks who've moved from other states, they still blame all their problems on southern Maine (Portland & Augusta) or on Massachusetts (people moving from New York City have been added to the list post-pandemic). Nothing is ever their own fault or a result of generations of bad and self-sabotaging decisions. Nope. It's those darned out of staters, always messing things up with their foreign ways. There was a Simpsons episode about a Hollywood production coming to Springfield and all the locals being evil, greedy monsters; jacking their rates and generally trying to fleece the outsiders for everything they could get, and that felt like the most Maine thing ever. A common sentiment I heard my whole life something to the effect of "welcome to Maine, now give me your money and get out."
Anyway, again, if you have money and enjoy isolation, I'm sure Maine has its charm.
But for this Native Mainer, who was working 3 jobs when he opened a pack of ramen noodles and realized he had no more food of any kind, no money, and no chance of ever actually doing better if he stayed, I'll never regret leaving & have no desire to live there again. I visit family every couple years and by day 2 or 3, I've had my fill of depression and scapegoating from the locals.
That said, Gardener is cute. The A-1 Diner is pretty good. Also, if you're in the Belfast area, I really like Young's Lobster Pound.
As the old saying goes, "it's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there."
Hey Matthew, for a while now I have been wanting to visit Maine; it was on my top two states to visit on the East coast. I am from Southern California where there is beaches and mountains and I love nature. In my state it is really expensive, and prices keep going up. I was in New Hampshire (my first time in the East Coast) doing some work for about 9 days; my flight back home was late, so I got to go to Maine for a few hours. I visited York where I got to see the Nubble lighthouse, shop at Stone kitchen, and eat at The Goldenrod where I tried lobster and blueberry ice cream for the first time. I really loved being there and would like to go back. It seems calm (much calmer than where I live) and it looks like a close-knit community. I am not used to cold weather so I do not think I would do well in central and northern Maine. How is the overall quality of life and what are some good places to live that do get freezing cold? Also, is it easy to make new friends?
@@michaelmosquera4709 He may be the completely wrong person to ask as he is obviously jaded from a bad experience. I grew up in Maine most of my life until my early 30's when I moved to Minnesota. Last summer I went back to visit and realized how much I missed it and missed all the opportunities for outdoor activities that aren't available most other places including here in Minnesota. Far as places to live, avoid Dexter. Nothing screams poverty quite like it. I would also avoid Portland, Augusta, Lewiston, Auburn, and Bangor/ Old Town areas unless you are a person who likes city life where people tend to be a bit on the ruder side. If you like polite people head to the country and don't fret to much about winters you get used to them just make sure to always put on a good set of snow tires and take your time. The part I will agree with is don't go there looking for a career, its true that its hard there.
Doesn't seem like you have been many places but if you want to see what rude is to outsiders come to Minnesota where you will be stabbed in the back the second you turn it to anybody here. My fiancé who is from here went to Maine for the first time last summer with me and she was shocked as to how nice EVERYBODY was compared to here even upstate New York was better. The only people she didn't like was the Canadians we ran into at OOB and all the people from Mass. Oh for places to eat next time you go back, hit up Big G's in Winslow for a sandwich that will blow your mind.
The housing market in Maine is bad compared to 4 or 5 years ago. For anything close to civilization and jobs, it's 250K minimum for a half way decent house and more like 300 to 400 for a decent house and those sell very quick with little negotiation...BIG time seller's market right now. Oh and all of the affordable housing is quickly being scooped up by house flipper companies and so there is NO availability of fixer upper houses with good bones. That house in Gardiner for 99K? It was bought by the flippers and is now 390K. Maine is no longer affordable and we are seeing a major uptick in homelessness and sanctuary cities and all that comes along with that.
I was born and raised in Maine and would never live in any of the towns in this video. They are pits. (Except Greenville, which is not a pit, but I still would not move there.)

Its cold as hell there stuck in the winter because of the cold winds buried in snow in the Winter.do not recommend living there its not all that great and fall dark raining not always sunny 😮

left Gardiner, Maine for New Zealand 30 years ago. I get back to my place of birth every couple of years to hunt birds and deer Oct.Nov. You can take the boy out of the country but ya can't take the country out of the boy :)

If the, major industry is medical, you might not want to live there. Why? That means that the overall populace is not that healthy. Remember other than low crime if you're relocating, the number one thing you want to think about right now 🤔 is the populist you're going to wealthy and healthy. Because the friends you make in a city you move to, dictate your future health status. If you're really in a bad health situation I recommend Dr Gabriel cousens.
What an absolutely weird video to feature many of the lowest crime towns in one of the safest states in US. Maybe next video about how to bubble wrap your children and pets too?

There is no safe place in Maine. There is a level of evil in Maine. When I arrived in Maine in September after selling real estate in Colorado a corrupt cop went to the car dealership and verified I had money in the bank. I was attacked with an electromagnetic (microwave) weapon at my hotel in Old Orchard Beach in the slow simmer. It took a week for me to recover. I purchased a house in Gardiner and it came with complimentary illegally installed surveillance equipment inside, around the perimeter and five to seven directional speakers. It allows corrupt police to broadcast in extortion rackets in surround sound when voice over power line communications where ac motors are used as speakers and live-streaming. In addition there is illegal electromagnetic microwave weapons in the surrounding houses. I was a defense contractor for 25 years and was immediately compromised as soon as I arrived in Maine. Everyone in Maine goes around wishing each other long prison sentences with their raised index finger Nazi salutes. Maybe wishing each other long prison sentences are also included in their Christmas cards. I put my house and plan to move to Europe. I am 60 years old and have no criminal history and my son-in-law is both USMC military police and was Long Beach PD from 2015 to 2022 and my son is USMC. I’m selling out of Maine and moving to Europe.
