That's a pretty good quick summary. Really, the two states are very similar. The climate, the topography, the culture, the cost of living. Their populations are about the same but Maine has much more land area so it is much more rural once you get past Portland (awesome city) especially. Once you get north of Bangor, there's practically nothing but forest as far as the eyes can see in every direction. It's rugged country, for sure. NH does have a lower overall tax burden but utilities are very expensive. Portsmouth, NH has an incredibly strong economy for such a small city but it's very expensive too. Housing in NH is impossible to find nowadays. Overall, I'd say it's a wash; maybe a slight edge to Maine.
I live in Maine, 1 mile from NH..I get the best of both..low taxes and no sales tax..Maine is way more liberal..
Gentrifiers buying up the southern coast. Those are culture invaders.
I like the comment about ME being more liberal which I didn't realize. I've been to Cape Elizabeth and Portland and both are lovely. Coming up on retirement in about 1 1/2 years I am very focused on the tax situation and clearly need to make a mad exit from CA
How is being "liberal" a good thing at moment?
@@jmarie28 Cape Elizabeth is repulsive.
Thank You for these videos. Maine for me.
Thanks for the kind words! I agree!
Are you collecting welfare?
I could be wrong, but the architecture seems quite different. Maine had more the shingle or clapboard wood structures (with the exception of Portland) whereas NH has more brick(?)
I like shopping in Portsmouth, but If I could afford it, I would like a place in Kennebunkport near Walkers Point with a view of the coast. Also on the dream list is a summer house "in-town" Bar Harbor.
Sounds lovely 🌈
As one who lives here, this is a good explanation of the differences between New Hampshire and southern Maine.
Hey thank you! I appreciate that!
What’s better for a remote worker? Planning to move from New Jersey to Portland Maine or Manchester New Hampshire but I am confused. Need to save money on rent and pretty much everything else.
Like you prefer Maine, but also love Port smith, NH. Have to compromise with wife so not so isolated, but both excellent quality of life, thank you for your channel, all the very best.
Doesn't shopping in NH to avoid paying income tax just screw over the small businesses in ME where you live and the "community" you were praising in ME in your last video?
Doesn't House Bill 1097 state that NH residents cannot be charged income tax if they are 100% remote employees even if their company is in Maine (or any other state for that matter)? I believe what you are saying in video about remote employees of Maine may be incorrect.
As always, we recommend that you speak with your own personal tax advisor for this information. Thanks for the comment!
Maine tax law has a provision that if you purchase goods in New Hampshire, you are required to report them to Maine Revenue and pay sales tax on those goods and services. It's on the Maine income tax form. When LePage was governor, Maine Revenue sent letters and forms to all residents for them to "own up", report their purchases and pay the tax. Honestly, I wouldn't be broadcasting that you shop in New Hampshire to avoid the sales tax because if someone from Maine Revenue happens to catch your video, they would likely send you a nice letter telling you to pay up.
Impossible to prove..only on big purchases like appliances or furniture, lumber..Cash is still King..
@@nadyaroy4159 Depends on how much you value honesty.
@@lmen255 As much as "SCOTUS" these days !
Maine is a left wing state. Their taxes are extreme. Everyone is on welfare. When I lived in Portsmouth NH, I would see busses from Maine and Canada in front of Marshals, Macy's etc. It was really sad and pathetic. They all looked so poorly dressed and hungry...... Hint to Mainiacs.......get a job, vote Republican.
@@qazzaq248 Wasn't LePage a Repuglican for a couple of terms ???? How'd that work out ?
I'd like to know about the difference in schools systems and quality. We are seriously thinking of moving to the area next year and would like to connect.
Thank you!! I responded to your e-mail, looking forward to connecting.
We are looking into both states.
I appreciate your point of view.
I have lived in York county, southern Maine, as well as living in Manchester, NH. People like me moved from the north to this area for the good paying jobs. Definately a plus for this area. Myself personally, I cant stand the horrible traffic in either one of those places. Only 1 major highway in and out of the whole state of Maine goes right through this area. Friday night, everybodys jamming the highway northbound, and Sundays sometimes the tollboth in York southbound was backed up for miles in the summer especially. Boston was only an hour away, but I think I went to visit Boston maybe a couple times for all the 8 years I lived there. I live in central Maine now, back where I came from. The price of houses here are half the cost of what it is anywhere in York or Cumberland county, and NH is even more expensive for houses from what I saw, on top of the higher property taxes. Now the house price increases are starting to hit this area too, there's not much for sale, which is driving the prices up. If you're lucky you might find a house built in 1900 that some old lady passed away and her kids are selling just to sell.. not to flip or make a profit. The cost to build a new one has gone way up, building materials are expensive, and inflation hit that market hard. Cant even barely buy a new single wide trailer for less than $100,000. I remember when they were less than $50k usually, not anymore. And building a stick-built house will cost a small fortune unless your a do-it-all carpenter with lots of free time, and you'll still pay inflated prices for building materials.
Beware... New Hampshire has VERY high property tax...
Thank you for the comment!
Worse than pa?
Nothing compared to Illinois!
I would choose whichever has the lowest priced apartment.
I'd say Maine
@@LivetheseacoastPortland ?
Nothing in that area has low rent. The housing is through the roof in Price and even rural areas to the north are on the rise. Some cheaper areas in Maine. Rumford/Mexico, Jay, Bingham/Skowhegan, Milo, Howland , Machias/Calais, Sherman/Island Falls/ Houlton. Mars Hill/Caribou/Fort Kent.
I'll stick with Rhode Island. We have been cuisine, thanks to the very prevalent Italian population! However, I might be looking for a secondary residence in Maine.
Is it true 100% P&T veterans are exempt from property taxes in New Hampshire?
live in maine, shop and work in new hampshire, got it. ✍
With the exception of CA and IL, taxes are the same in every state. They just rob you in different ways. It is a good benefit to live close to borders. I get the KY-TN tax break. It will save you a few hundred dollars per year in groceries.
So true and I'm the expert - from Chicago and been in CA for over 20 years
Both states are truly beautiful places... in Summer... I don't think there is much pressure for folks to move to the Northeast... everyone is going South. Maine and New Hampshire are visit once in you life time type places much like the Grand Canyon... if you look at the numbers. That said... thanks for the info and I see a few videos of "don't come here" I don't think they should worry... Maine is never going to be Florida unless Global warming suddenly goes crazy :) That said I like it that states like Maine exist... it is kind of unspoiled... and will probably stay that way forever.
Do. It forget about impact fees on your vehicles
Thank you so much 😊
I would like Maine. I’ve live in small towns and countryside most my life out west.
The State of Maine requires on your State tax return to report all purchases you made in NH.
Honestly I’m just gonna have to visit both. My priorities are how good the geography and surrounding cities are. Maine seems to win the nature battle but Nh is closer to Boston (but maine isn’t that far either) But Greenville SC is also on my list because there are beaches and Mountains near the city (albeit way farther than maine and Nh)
Beaches> Greenville is in the upstate. Mountains are 45 minutes away.
Greenville SC is very touristy with millions of visitors each year. Something to think about 🤔
Umm. New hamsphire got just as much percentage of wilderness area. Like wtf u people talkin bout.
One reason is the taxes and mostly my pension from NH. Maine will tax my monthly pension, which was earned in NH. I also hate sales tax on goods. I do love Maine and the seacoast but for these reasons I won't live there. Too bad, I do love the State of Maine.
It may not tax your pension. The rules are changing, but not much info on the web. Found out on my taxes my small pension is not taxed by Maine.
Maine, since '05..
BTW Portland is a GREAT city...Big, but not too big...Has everything, not as trashy as Manchester...
Portland is a great city!
Portland is a trashy city for sure. Ruined long ago.
If you look at the real metrics of the average workers salary having a state that has no income tax is a horrendous deal for the average tax payer who pays that difference on average. NH as a whole unfortunately has the 2nd highest tax burden in New England behind Connecticut 😮 the overall burden for a average person making $80k a year with a $350k house and one child is about 14% Connecticut is 16% Massachusetts 10.5% Vermont 12% RI 11.5% and Maine is 10% overall. The only benefits of these states in New England other then Vermont is job opportunities, education and more land development. The bureaucracies are bigger as is the tax burden. Nothing is free especially convenience. Most of these town taxes go to the overly funded and poorly performing, giving the price being paid, school systems. Education shouldn't cost millions of dollars a year which 95% goes into the pockets of administrators and lucrative benefits. $150+k on average for a school superintendent is Insain 😮 and most have assistants making $80+k. Education has become a scandalously monopolistic system that unfortunately gets willfully ignored for the sake of pie in the ski theories which prove to work minimally or not at all, wasting funds that can go to metrics that actually work. So something to consider when moving into any town, city or state. New England is beautiful but unfortunately you will pay erroneously high for it. Basic human weakness, spend foolishly on things just because...
Forget those to move to Florida to help us make it legalized
I would say Maine and New Hampshire share a dislike for Massholes! I am actually thinking about buying some raw land in Maine. I want to research zoning ordinances etc. Probably mid to Northern Maine.
I wish when I was younger I had bought up a bunch of it. Land was dirt cheap up there.
Research it. I believe things are so bad in northern Maine they pay people to move there, plus free land.
PS The whole country hates Massholes.
Maine human rights look better. Courts more rights and prisons nicer than my current life. Probably no fishing license and do things fir free. That's free food and free fun. No taxes. Maine courts are for human rights so you probably just dont volunteer for incine taxes . Trade and farm stands , fishing hunting . Lotta non taxed living ... great videos.
Never move to Yankeeland!
I wouldnt move to either. Nice to visit period
Northern Maine is losing population, everyone is poor and on welfare, it is getting worse every year. The only money in Maine are rich Massholes with fancy summer homes. Central Maine is similar to Alabama except there are no Black people and it is really cold. The people are not very bright. Crime is much worse in Maine than New Hampshire. Native maniacs are weird. Maine taxes are significantly higher. New Hampshire Real Estate taxes are about half of what MA, CT, or NY. Most of the property in Maine is pretty worthless so it is not really taxed, since it is losing population in most of the state. There are no jobs in Maine except waiting tables and cleaning toilets in the summer.
PS I have lived and worked in both states.
That’s a candid but true analysis
That was an honest review. Mmmmm maybe NH is a better choice for retirement. Still have a ways to go before deciding where to hitch my wagon or my Miata 🤦♀ One does get spoiled residing in CA
A lot of what you are saying is objectively false. Maine has a lower crime rate than NH, the state of Maine has a growing population overall, and it seems like you didn’t get along with people in the state because you are obviously very rude and don’t respect the locals.
@@AA-il9pc Murder rate in Maine is 2.6/k, NH is 1.8/k. Again, Mainiacs are not very bright. (Nat Ctr for Health Stats)
If you like to smoke your mary jane , go to Maine not NH. You can grow in Maine too.
Compare human rights. Taxes more legal battle and control how and where what you buy. Be a tax on my own beef or from farmer ? Farm stands gardeners taxing you? Trade . Look into court system. Maine wins . I think new Hampshire has view taxes and weird taxes. Go around all taxes and so forth... court system and prison is what look at. Ny state go after you lock you away for life first time. Just fir fun . In cement cell . Lights on yelled at by guards ... evil state of aggressive people. So maine looks like best place . I don't see how could be arrested in maine even. Court defenes could drop most charges... more you do just living generates money and jobs . It pay taxes in other ways. Fuel tax , buying things you helped the state ... looks nice.
The bottom line to the answer is political, these two states are opposites, NH is a masculine state, Maine is feminine. Decide by that metric.
OK I'll take Maine
I don't even know what he is talking about but i would dare him to come to town here and say that...i am sure our feminine guys would be happy to show them what it is.@@EdTheFed77
Omg… smoking too much smoke??
Libertarians are moving to NH while "progressive" gentrifers (MA,NY,RI Democrats mainly)havie been buying up Maine's coast. If you like liberty go to NH.If you like bigger government, seas of rainbow flags, disregard the 2A,etc please *refrain* from going to Maine and stay in MA,NY,RI etc...already done enough damage to Maine.
NEW HAMPSHIRE IS A STRIP MALL WITH TRAFFIC LIGHTS EVERY 300 FEET!
Maine is a few rich Massholes living on the coast, the rest of the state is collecting welfare when not having sex with with their cousins.
Sounds like florida
That sounds most unappealing. Goodness where does one move for retirement 🤦♀ And I wouldn't even step foot in FL much less live there
