- John Browne of Monuments took a trip up to the EMGtv studio last month to give us some exclusive instrumental versions of his band's music. John makes excellent use of his EMG 81-7, showing the wide sonic range of this 7 string humbucking pickup.

hahahaha, make no mistake, this guy is the picking master.
He does have a flawless technique. I'm truly Jealous
lukas balmer Don't be jealous, be practice.
Wow go back to school man.. You seriously can't count or you're blind.
AttilatheThrilla ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Somewhere, a single tear is rolling down James Hetfield's cheek.
yes!
Down being the operative word in this joke. Get it.
Nah. 1) did it when heavy music was acdc and deep purple 2) wrote numerous immortal riffs and inspired thousands or millions 3) humble guy who supports and helps new talent 4) perhaps the best frontman and voice ever. But yes, this guys right hand is something to behold.
Good God, finally, we are rid of the abomination that is James Hetfields last several albums' worth of disappointing overly macho garbage.
@@braddavis4377 No one asked you, just like no one wants to hear a 7 string chord with distortion.
I pride myself in a fierce right hand technique....
But holy shit.
Yeah this guy has some crazy right hand technique.
I was watching this thinking that I saw nothing special then I got to 1:51... Damn.
Eric Sangimino Right?
They say Browne only needs to use an upstroke once every hundred years. The rest of the time, it's purely for his own entertainment.
I recommend checking out his playthrough of Monuments's song The Uncollective for Blackstar.
Cailum Finnegan They say Browne can play the Meshuggah back catalogue with just downstrokes. But he rarely does this because the guitar can't keep up with it.
2:08 - 2:44 continues to be one of the sickest things I've ever heard played on a guitar.
Agreed my friend it’s nasty
@@chopholtz4950 that riff isnt even chugging though what are you on about? he's muting and playing a dissonant chord, and this one is super melodic, because dissonance is still part of a melody
@@chopholtz4950 show example of similar riff
1000% in the .1% of anything that will ever be played on guitar. Just how the fuck could anyone write this
Coheed and Cambria has gotten a lot heavier than I remember
You win
+Leisure Muffin lol
+Leisure Muffin hahahahahahahahahahaha xDDDDD
hahahaha omg yes lmao
That's gotta be some of the most confident playing I've ever seen.
His right hand, just damn..
1:00 my favorite riff
1:51 Incredible right hand technique
1:51 is my all time fav monuments riff id say tbh
2:25 is the best thing I've ever heard
Then listen to The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza. A bit heavier than this, but Josh Travis does that all the time.

no one is comparing, it's like saying "well if you like that, then try this"
Jonathan Keeler Rudy X3 has been my jam for awhile haha
Jonathan Keeler
or you know listen to sikth, the guys who actually pioneered that shit in modern metal
I'm blown away by this guys talent.
saw it live... unbelievable
Browne away*
I love how he's sitting on a stool as if he's gonna play Flying Without Wings. Would like to see him wearing a knitted woollen sweater to enhance this magical effect.
Jon Gomm likes Metal??! =D
His playthrough of Agarthian on his channel has him in an incredibly comfy sweater, i think that fits this.
Jon Gomm Dude! You listen to Metal as well?! \m/ I can’t believe it! A godly acoustic player listening to a demonic shredder... It’s just so awesome
JON GOMM
MY FRIENDS AND I ALL LOVE YOU PLEASE DON'T STOP MAKING MUSIC
@@migz-kun4326 I mean he even collabed with Dan Tompkins of Tesseract.
That right hand.. holy shit.
not yet released but already a classic
You could hear Admit Defeat like 3 years before it was released, that's what Monuments' about lol
6 years later, it is indeeed a classic.
9 years later and it is indeed a classic
10 years later. Still the sickest right hand heavy riff with good poly strokes. 😑😑😑🫥🫥🫥🫰🫰🫰🫶🫶🫶🔥🔥🔥🫣🫣🫣
I was scared for the next guy that comes after Devin Townsend on EMGpickupsTV but John holds his ground :D
Devin's run was vocally impressive, but not that much in his playing. The guy has a unique charisma.
John there blew my mind with his playing...
Impressive but borrrrrring, dude if that's how he is live.....I'm good, I'll see devin townsend instead ANY DAY....why?.....because I actually get my money's worth. I get to see a real show! I know many guitarist who can play this shit blindfolded, we all have seen unbelievably talented guitarist but it gets stale after several minutes. I can see an amazing dude saying on a stool anytime and its free.
But seeing a Devin townsend live....now that's worth paying dor.
Nobody said Monuments had anything on Devin. He's a living legend anyway. Still... This song is amazing!
Who is Devin?
Townsend is garbage
I feel like if he played this at the beginning of ANY mainstream music award show, it would be all anyone cared about the rest of the show. this is true talent, and its fucking unbelievable.
They would all be vapourized dead and he would be arrested for 7-string murder. Mainstream could not handle this magnitude of excellence at the moment.
infinitesimotel "Yes thats right Christie, i am standing outside this mainstream music awards where everyone was KILLED !!!....by a g-string !
mrtalkative91
No vocals so no mainstream audience would care
+Hessian420 no vocals on this demo, but this song has vocals.
You’re severely overestimating the ability of a top 200 listener to sit through more than a minute of heavily distorted guitar.
I slowly forgot this was a playthrough and not a studio recording playback. How... sooooo SOOOO tight.
in case you didn't notice: that man has some delicious guitar skills
Even 6 years ago John was on a whole other level! I absolutely adore his playing style.
Those down pick dynamics are soo sick! Fuck!
About time John got some proper recognition. Monuments are a really great band, but John's been making awesome music for years on his own!
I Fucking lOve This!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Bang u bang
Liking the harmonized minor 2nds on the taps at 2:28. The chords in the chorus are great too. Not only intricate, but with a unique progression.
@@johnvice4066 lmfao that's harmony. harmony can be dissonant or consonant. not least of all because what is considered "dissonant" has changed throughout history and in different cultures. Major 6ths were once considered dissonant in western music, but now they are one of the most common consonant harmonizations.
@John Vice I also took theory in college as a music education major. Just because something is dissonant doesn't make it not harmony. I have no idea where you got that notion from. Not to mention your apparent confusion between the concepts of "harmony" and "consonance."
@@DirkDjently You're 100% correct and your edited comment helped elucidate that further. I was indeed mistaking harmony and consonance. I'll delete my comments to avoid confusion. Thanks.
holy crap, this dude is an amazing guitarist.🎵🎶👍
yep
Amazing band. Best out there.
this is the eeenddd!!!!
That guitar tone is amazing.
It's not that riff or another... it's whole piece on top of mixing and composing thinking. Violently overlooked masterpiece.
Definitely one of the best performances/tones on EMGtv. This was pleasantly surprising.
The way he blends it all back into the main riff is nothing short of sorcery
The part starting at 1:00 is absolutely awesome.
1:18 is beautiful
God damn! I'm STILL blown away by his playing
Atonal tapping?
I think I just came a little bit.
One second, I can't even manage a barre chord. Then, low and behold, I put in EMG's and I play and sound exactly like John Browne. And they match the curtains.
\m/
robin cosby it’s not atonal there is still a melody it’s just the harmonisation that make it would like it but it’s not atonal real atonal stuff that is not listenable is from the vienne school where guys like shoneberg where pushing the boundaries of atonality
@@henripech5276 it's a second minor
sounds amazing and his phrasing is aweomse.... loved the big chords he uses too.. lots of great techniques... but yeah damn those finger stretching chords.... wish more people played and wrote like this...
Oh my god this man is beast when it comes to picking. During the chorus you can hear his picking picked up by the cab mics if you hear closely. Incredible.
I'm on a huge John Browne kick, been watching his videos for the last couple of days. Amazing player, I can barely understand what he's doing for the most part.
I'm happy that I've recently both guitar with 81-7. Now all I need is just talent :)
i love the chorus,all the chords,perfect tone
Man, John Browne is such an amazing songwriter and rhythm guitar player. It is just nuts how tight his rhythm playing is!
EMG, your camera work and music production is killer. This is quality.
Whenever I see these kind of things my hands are urging to buy a 7 string guitar.
They are a great tool to have
@@isaiahgrandt5305 I'm glad to say I got a 7 and 8 string now :)
the melodies this guy is playing are unbelievable, it has this indescribable quality it's minor toned but so triumphant sounding..
Truly astonishing overall control and technique... gave me chills
The chord progression at 1:35 is mad. Getting my fingers to do those acrobatics on the fretboard would take me forever to get right.
The chords are so awkward to play
Pretty sure John is the inspiration for anyone who downpicks.. so everyone really
This song is such a great evolution of how audio has evolved over the decades. A culmination of great technique, music theory, electrical engineering, and (of course) the guitar. Truly inspiring.
I'm so glad I found this. Incredible.
I still think that's one of his best tones and rig to this day. Sounds great.
2:17 to 2:25 such an awesome riff
The chorus riffs are the best part, love the emotion.
Amazing!! John is on another level!!! Keep it coming!!!!
1:51 is so fricken cool. That octave that he hits makes it hit so hard
That Chorus progression is
so crazy good. CANNOT wait for new monuments
SO much guitar noms... Brilliant stuff.
Holy shit that was phenomenal... Great songwriting and amazing sound
1:52 holy shizwinkle
This is the tightest, chunkiest, sickest sounding track. I love how Browne can get such a unique sound out of the guitar. And the mixture of those big chords and the djenty stuff is killer.
Also, dat picking.
Monuments' new album is the most anticipated release of 2014 for me. Just can't wait.
That tapping at 2:29 always gives me goosebumps
More than a hint of Sikth in there. Which is an awesome thing.
so glad I've seen this. incredible song!
met this guy when he played with Tosin Abasi at a clinic in the UK...such a nice guy and fantastic player!
this dude is on point. great playing and song writing
This kiddies, is why you do not scoop mids. I love the bark of his rhythm tone, man how I need this engl preamp
+Dan 2c plus It's a Laney Ironheart Studio 15 he's playing through, with a couple of pedals
Wow! I love watching John absolutely shred!
So amazing!! I loved it! Great playing!
Pretty sure all of the dislikes are old men who listen to nothing but Iron Maiden & Dio. "This isn't metal!! BRAHHHHHHWHARRRRRGARBL"
What the fuck is wrong with Maiden and Dio?
***** NOTHING AT ALL! I was hoping people would culturally understand the joke. Sorry.
Id have to agree with you, just respect the generations of metal pls
Wet Sigh Well I have just about every album from both bands if it helps any. I just happen to know people who literally cannot move past that era and it's funny to me and my mates. Good grief, lighten up guys. It's youtube. #respect \m/
Or, maybe they just don't like it, which is their basic right ? You know, tastes, opinions and all... Do you know these words ?
dat picking
The odd timing is so funky and musical. Just recently discovered your band and thats all I've been listening to. Thanks Spotify for your recommendations
completely amazing stuff!
Must be on my 8th listen now.
2:26 so sweet
i'll watch this over & over again just to increase the number of views! So Good!
damn, gotta say I'm PUMPED for the new Monuments material!!
Wasn't this song supposed to be called "The Indulger?"
btw, incredible performance. looking forward to the new album!
I'm guessing they changed the title after Chris wrote lyrics to it!
Yeah but that was disappointing. I expected a new monuments song haha
Haha, that makes two of us! :-)
I love how, at 1:53, the UA-cam frame rate can't keep up with Browne's God-like down picking.
I came here to see / hear this right hand everybody's been talking about .... wasn't disappointed.
Amazing technique, flawless!!! That Ibanez sounds so sick!!!!!
How can anyone dislike this? Even if you're not into heavy music you gotta respect this guy's immense talent! What the fuck is wrong with people?
1:50 one of the most disgusting looking guitar parts I've ever witnessed, the man is truly, truly skilled!
That descending riff? Definitely cool sounding, but the breakdown type riff that follows is significantly more challenging...and awesome.
Yeah his hands just looks so awesome! I agree, it sounds a lot more murderous I'll give you that
I think it's also because his picking technique makes it look like he's doing more work than he really is.
Alkalilee I totally agree, his right hand technique is absolutely phenomenal.
met john after a show about a month ago. he's an extremely nice dude, and an amazing guitarist.
Great musician. Love the music.
It seems like people who actually like Djent call it Djent... People that don't get it say it's not a genre. Just leave it to people who like it guys.
Yeah that's so true man. ***** I also refer to it as progressive metal usually.
The weirdest thing is people who say it's not a genre know perfectly well when a song is djent (which is not a genre, of course).
***** "Progressive" has bad connotations in the UK. It's stupid and a classist thing, but that's what it is. That's why people are often more comfortable saying "djent" than Prog Metal
***** The think with simply calling it progressive metal is that bands like Amorphis also refer to themselves as progressive metal, and they are like, you know, totally not Djent.
I usually say Djent, but since nobody knows what this is i would say modern progressive metal or something like that...

Love how his stuff is so melodic
Every time I listen and watch....I find little nuances that keeps me a learning listener.
F'n A !Solid!!!.
everybody how says EMG can't Djent need to watch this video
+Chris Meier It is not the pickups that djent, but the soul.....
+Colm Donnelly the axe fx helps a little too lol
+Chris Meier pretty sure it's that axe fx lol
fuck djent, it is not a sub genre, this is progressive nu metal more than " djent"
+layla buenfin darko chill the fuck genre Nazi. He said the EMG's can Djent, which is still accurate to what Djent is. Its just a term to describe a noise.
Damn, that guitar sounds huge! Too bad he didn't get to keep it :(
What an awesome right hand! Awesome groove. Skills. Respect, we need to reward these artistic efforts. Done.
love this dudes writing sounds amazing very tasteful
wooooooooooooaooaooaoaoaooaoaooaoaoaoooaooaoaaooaoaooaah! New generation.
So Hurley has lost weight and picked up the guitar I see.
so much melody!
I saw them on resurrection fest and they are amazing!!! Love Monumentss!!! The show for me was too short...
It's really hard for me to distinguish the chords used in the chorus. I mean, I can in the guitar under what he is playing, which is rather simple. I t almost sounds like inversions of the same chord haha Maybe it's the tone?
Is it just me?
+Jack Gough if you check out his playthrough of the indulger ( same song, but pre production) you can here the chords more clear
Is that true that if ill eat him ill get high?Browne lol
He is amazing!
You speak da true true
This is the work of a madman. A beautiful lunatic. These riffs hit so hard I had to wear a helmet while listening.
Can't wait for the Monuments' new album!
I had a fine time learning this song, then the riff at 2:08 murdered me. :'(
Ain't that a bitch? lol Learning a song that sounds so tits and then a musical cockblock just ruins it! :P
I feel you pain all too well! Good luck finishing the song!
Schatje79 "Musical cockblock" - this is a bold yet accurate statement of what happened there!
Laney Ironheart?! They can djent?!
Anything can djent in the hands of John Browne lol
Steve Neil I think you're right. I reckon he could even make my goldfish djent
Philip Twidle He made my goldfish djent.
Stephen Smith he djented my goldfish to death.
Mine too. But my beta fish is now an alpha fish.
This is the video that made my want to buy a 7 string a few years ago. It's still so badass
Awesome performance!! Great job
