The first time I saw this musical number I was in history class. The teacher put the video for us and the whole class found it cringey and made bad jokes. The professor felt quite sad about it, but it honestly sparked something in me. Now I'm studying performing arts and it's probably mostly thanks to this.
Well then you better tell that professor what you told us! It could’ve ruined their day, week, or year to share something they loved with their class of kids and have them make fun of it; I hope you let them know it was worth it!
Yes, many times the most worthwhile things take time to develop a taste for it, to sharpen the palate, to discern the nuance measure as it takes a learned sense to appreciate it. You and your fellow students were exposed to something fantastic and sophisticated and didn't have the life experie ce to know it. It took some years if not decades to realize what an amazing performance you were privileged to see.
As a student I worked in a cinema as a side job. Cabaret stayed on for weeks and weeks. While the movie was playing you could spend your time however you wanted. While my coworkers were hanging around in the foyer, I watched this movie again and again, i knew all the dialogs and all the songs by heart. I practiced the dance routines, I tried to look like Liza Minelli. I was obsessed! I still know all the routines and songs. Years later I went to see Chicago, and that movie hit me in excactly the same spot.
My parents had the soundtrack on tape so I listened to it as a kid many times before I actually saw the movie. This song was my favorite on the tape and I’d listen to it over and over
My favorite song as a child was, Drink! Drink! Drink!, sung by none other than Mario Lanza in The Student Prince. My mother would fuss every time I played it. It was not until just recently that ever saw that part of the movie.
My #1 Hollywood movie. Entertaining and thrilling at the same time. This is the picture once seen you'll never forget. Each scene has it's purpose and they all are composed in perfect way. Did you see the countryside trip then some random boy in front of local pub was singing seemingly innocent and harmless song "The Future Belongs to Me"? And the only one old man in the enthusiastically applauding crowd who's face tell us that he exactly knows where this all leads.
As the rest of the song should go: "When you haven't any coal in your stove And you freeze in the winter And you curse to the wind at your fate When you haven't any shoes on your feet You're coat's like a sheet And you look thirty pounds underweight When you go to get a word of advice From the fat little pastor He will tell you to love everymore But when hunger comes a rap-and-atap-and-atap at the window (Spoken At the window! Who's there? Hunger! Ooh, hunger? (fainting music)) (Sung) See how love flies out the door! (raspberry) Money makes the world go around the world go around the world (clink clink) Money makes the (raspberry) go around that clinking clanking sound Oh money money money money get a little get a little a mark a yen a buck or a pound that clinking clanking clunking sound is al that makes the world go around it makes the world go round!
We had a talent show at school when I was in the 4th grade. This is the song I preformed! I drug my chair out to the middle of the stage in my best Sally Boles costume and got to the “man by man” lyric when I heard the Principal screaming No!!! I was carried off the stage and had no idea what was wrong with my choice of song!!! Yep I really did that!! 😂
it is creepy but that was the Weimar Republic (which is celebrated in the zio media). Berlin was full of drugs and rich men paying for young German prostitutes.
@@kaposipal Michael Yorke is bisexual in Cabaret and sleeps around. it is actually a very gross movie. I'm surprised they let their guard down the by making it but most people miss this aspect.
My parents had the eight track cassette and I remember singing this song as we rode in our used luxury Oldsmobile 98. I sing this song to this very day. Love it.that clinking, clanking sound❤❤
There have been many performances of this number in the fifty years since this film was recorded - and many of them have been absolutely spectacular. But none of them will ever be this magnificent it’s iconic.
"Кабаре"вышел на экраны кинотеатров в СССР в 1988 году.В то время не воспринимался так остро,как сейчас.Понятное дело-мы жили в другой Эпохе.Хотя фильм зацепил.Этот номер Лайзы Минейли помню до сих пор,как самое яркое пятно.
Этот проход с 1:06 наверное останется вечным шедевром в анналах театрального искусства. Я когда смотрю этот эпизод у меня сердце куда-то глубоко проваливается.
Right around 1:29 ...that is the moment i always thought we should send to represent musical theater to aliens. And they are not even singing! Minelli's eye roll is the supreme moment.

well yeah, but at least it wasn't your dad singing it.

This scene is so electrifying.

nice :)
What's the movie about?
Just for this performance, Liza and Joel both deserved their Oscar’s. Such a delight to watch. Best number I’ve seen in 100 years of motion pictures
👍👍👍👍👍👍
I agree with you...100 times!

I agree. Such a watchable film, seen it umpteen times but love it
Don't forget the magic of Bob Fosse! 👍
An era of Broadway and movies never to be seen again. Priceless!
It's so expensive to mount Broadway shows today.
I spent like 2 years watching nothing but old movies on TCM. Some of the best times of my life
Got any recommendations?
Which ones are your favourites?
I miss having that channel
Sounds like Heaven!
The entire film is a work of art.
Liza looks so much like her mother and has her talent too. She was never just a nepo baby. This performance is amazing!
Indeed!
Don't forget her dad, Vincente Minelli, who was a pretty successful director.

I LOVED the dancing number Stevie and Patrick did.
moira is sobbing rn
That's what brought me here😂

Me as well!!
People who find this cringe truly don’t understand musical theatre
Lots of people don't get a lot of things.
the point of cabaret is that it’s a campy, run down club. if it was the ritz, they wouldn’t have hired sally lol
People who write "cringe" truly don't understand creativity.
Don’t blame them! The lack of culture has no limits!
Cringe? It's perfect.
This iconic scene MUST be one of the best EVER in films. They both deserved the academy award they received even if for this scene only.

Bob Fosse dragged the American musical kicking and screaming into the latter half of the twentieth century.

I had forgotten just how funny this scene was. Thanks for posting it.
Bob Sibson played the MC in Cabaret in 1969 in Vancouver, Canada. Thanks for the memories Dad.
And Joel is still working! He's directing a Yiddish language revival of Fiddler on the Roof.
Yes, and I just saw him in a TV show. Such a talent.
I’ve never seen anything so creepy and yet so catchy…
i did, when a bisexual pathologist statisfies my over sixty oncologist neighbor at 3 am...and both of the give out loud noises...

This film still stands the test of time. Just the songs alone are brilliant.

What a joy this great and unforgettabel Musical is!😊 Liza Minelli was a great singer and actor!❤
I'm not a huge fan of musicals, but this one is a favorite. Necessary for the plot and gist of the movie. A perfect rendition of the play.
Same here. I like few musicals. This is one of those few.
