I love how you can hear just a bit of Judy in Liza. Like their voices sound related, but that their styles are different and liza’s is just a little higher and sharper.
I loved Judy growing up and wanted to emulate her voice and mannerisms terribly. But as I got older and heard Liza sing it made me think how beautiful that she carried her own talent yet it’s obvious she has her mother and father’s creativity flowing through her.
And you can see Judy in Liza's face so well there. Amazing for there to be two generations of such incredibly talented, charismatic women. There are generations of actors who are really good, but not as special as these two.
This is her mirroring her mother's moment in the Man Who Got Away. I think the Oscars saw that too. Giving Liza an Oscar was like giving it to Judy too.

This!! I have known and loved this movie all my life. Yours is the perfect analysis of her performance for me. She gives this to every performance...just like her mum did before her.
Vulnerability but like an ignorant vulnerability, it’s very subtle. Not like the “vulnerability” of modern movie musicals that’s just so sanitized and self-aware constantly, (like, say, just blurting out what you’re feeling and why you’re feeling it and then adding the appropriate emotions alongside it) it’s much smarter than that. Liza Minnelli is an incredible actress because it’s like she’s showing us a secret that sally Bowles doesn’t know. And it’s just gut-wrenching to see her go from this to cabaret, it’s like the worst turn her character could have taken. I was just revisiting bojack horseman and remembered the elements that align with cabaret that the show makes direct reference to (don’t stop dancing +reprise) and cabaret is like the bojack horseman for a modern audience to relate to.
it's a telling scene: here's Liza singing arguably the best song in the show, and singing it better than anyone could, and the audience offers a few polite claps. There's only one reason, I believe, why Cabaret didn't win best picture, and that's because The Godfather came out the same year.
Also, FWIW, I think the idea isn't that the audience isn't impressed/interested, but that she is trying out the number for the club owners. The place is dark and nearly empty.

the energy building up throughout this song... this song is my home. every time I feel lost in life, I come back to this one and I remember exactly who I am and what I live for. always a "maybe this time" person. always failing a lot, feeling like a miserable loser for a few days and then being ready to do it all over with the most open heart to life and with a fresh, endless, childish hope. always thinking I found my place in life, realizing I was wrong and picking myself up to try somewhere else without any regrets.

Wasn’t it the same case with mein herr? Looked it up: and yeah! That seems to be the case. Mein Herr was written for the movie, and was finally added to the stage production in ‘98. Which is insane to me.
I've always been a fan of the film and earlier this year (before Covid) I went to see the stage version. Loved it, although nothing can beat the film version. This song actually stole the show, Kara Lilly Hayworth played Sally Bowles and this song was her shining moment, she really gave it her all.
"Sally" in the original stage production just was not presented as being this vulnerable and even kind of sweet. Played by Jill Haworth then, she was also a bit rough and even gravelly-voiced, a second-rate singer in a third-rate revue. It's actually "Cliff" (original name of the BF) as played and sung by Bert Convy, who had the main love songs and inner conflicts over the ever-changing attitudes of Sally and their relationship. The entire show was re-imagined for the movie with more balance of their PoVs, and I don't think it was even LEGAL to have Liza Minelli portray a really cynical character-- has she ever? Except Renee Zellweger couldn't sing for sh*t!! I get so upset when they cast non singing mediocre actors in musicals. It makes my blood boil!! Like WHY?? Emma Stone sucks too! We need REAL voices back!!! What happened to the GREATS?!! LOL my rage is not directed towards you... I get very upset about this stuff because I am a singer and it's just ridiculous. People want to hear a voice that will MOVE them to FEEL. Very few people have that kind of voice...I do and I don't say that to sound conceited. I was born with a gift from God and I knew at 2 years old I was supposed to be on Broadway before I even know what Broadway was.....I spent my childhood singing on big stages around Los Angeles but I gave up on my dreams for a stable job and I am now 41 and thinking about trying again... it's never too late for Broadway ;) My name is Erica Horne ....maybe one day you'll hear my name and remember this comment. Gotta put it out there right? ;)
I showed this movie to a friend who never watched Cabaret before and didn't know anything about the film or the musical, and after we watched this scene she told me: "can we see that scene again!?" I was so proud !
How PERFECT was Liza for stage & musicals? Good grief. She is perfection in this role and should have been tapped for more like this. Agents asleep.
Maybe this time, I'll be lucky
Maybe this time, he'll stay
Maybe this time, for the first time
Love won't hurry away
He will hold me fast
I'll be home at last
Not a loser anymore
Like the last time
And the time before
Everybody loves a winner
So nobody loved me
'Lady Peaceful', 'Lady Happy'
That's what I long to be
Well, all the odds are, they are in my favor
Something's bound to begin
It's gotta happen, happen sometime
Maybe this time, I'll win
'Cause everybody, oh, they love a winner
So nobody loved me
'Lady Peaceful', 'Lady Happy'
That's what I long to be
Well, all the odds are, they are in my favor
Something's bound to begin
It's gotta happen, happen sometime
Maybe this time
Maybe this time, I'll win
One of my all time favourite tunes. Liza was never more beautiful than when she sung this. Truly iconic, and Legendary to boot.
Fabulous Liza along with her unmatched vocals and talent
Stunning, gorgeous and timeless with her amazing vocals and control. Love her!
Glee & Schitt's Creek gave this song the respect it deserved.
Also...I pretty much cringe at the idea of interpersonal contact with other humans but this is one of my spirit songs.
Never seen the movie. Heard this song years ago.
Then I looked for it after it came to my mind again. And I must say, I was completly mesmerized.
Fantastic Liza Minnelli !
Liza at her best.Beautifully sung !
God damn what a gift. Thank you Liza. I wish I met you earlier in life. It would have been grand.
That voice can't be beat for this song
One of the best movies and performances that I've ever seen in my life.y
Great film and probably the best song and performance in it. Liza at her peak!
You cant argue with GREATNESS
The greatest concert I ever saw or ever hope to see? Liza in the 70's, hands down, no question. Her standing ovations got standing ovations.
La canzone più bella ,nel film più bello che io abbia mai visto.
Grazie Liza.
Goodness she'Judy Garlands daughter alright..... just close your eyes @its magic 👍💋💞💖
Watching this magnificent performance by Liza gives me goose bumps and I find myself emotional. Bob Fossee was a genius and Lizas performance deserved the oscar. Just wonderful!
Wow! I've never seen this movie and never heard her sing before, but this was great. The first half of the song I swear I heard her mom's voice. It's crazy!
Liza had such a huge bundle of talent! Really incredible voice, great actress, giving and generous.
WOW...what a song and what a singer!!! This song is wonderful on so many levels. LOVE LIZA!
I cannot get over how much of her mother I can see in her...both talented beautiful ladies!
No one can do it like our Liza!
I SECOND THAT.
Dog Lover except Kristin Chenoweth
I nominate Lea Michelle
Kanakalala🌺 lea michel is too flat for this song but she tried.
Didn't see Schmitt's Creek loved her from the 70's how lucky am I check out more she's amazing
If I was a woman this would definitely be my 'torch song'
Then again why not!
Liza was never more beautiful than when appeared Cabaret ♡
watched the play 3 times different actress none of them have this voice . Amazing clear and beautiful
Why is it that songs resonate more when you're older. I saw this 20 years ago but today it has moved me so much bc it is timeless. And I see why Liza is revered....she's simply captivating and unforgettable. ♥️🎼🎵
watched the whole movie yesterday on my 24 birthday. Liza showed the world what a real star is.
I guess we'll never have singers or musicals like this... A Star Is Born is great, Gaga was awesome, but I didn't I didn't feel the magic that I feel hearing Liza in Cabaret or Barbra in Funny Girl....
Ik know what you mean, but a start is born was more of cooper’s movie and not so much of Gaga’s . Abby was not the main character
If that was straight off the bat...wow! what a performance; wonderful voice..
Thank you.
This song was my life I messed up so many times, but finally found a man who loved me with all my flaws. It will happen.
MY GOD!!!
Truth and Beauty have never thus been displayed.
Wonderous film.
May their Gods follow them well...
And all...
STAND TALL!!
OMG--Liza was fantastic in this movie, and esp. in this song !
My eternal gratitude to those enormous talents: Minelli. Joel Grey. Michael York. All brought together by Bob Fosse. Unforgettable and wonderful. All my life at your feet. From 1972 until this precise moment in 2014.
Riverdale did this song dirty, Schitts creek revived it lmao
And the epic performance by Kristen Chenoweth in Glee.
@@ThanurshanRajarajan liza owns it always will
@@WelshHomo87 Who said that she didn't .. argh??? Did I??? Did I??? Lol, hel no... Liza will be always No.1 so stop jumping into conclusion without annalysing the statement.

.
One of the best movies ever made, in my humble opinion. True class Hollywood at it's finnest.
Actually, the BEST MUSICAL Ever. Bob Fosse and Liza, the perfect combination. Sounds even better today than 50 years ago. Flawless. Perfection.
YES IT WAS A SUCH A GOOD MOVIE..
This is so incredible
Sang Liza. What heart ❤️. She said lady peaceful lady happy that’s where I aim to be beautiful.
This movie needs to be brought up much more nowadays. It’s such a soulful, beautiful, breathtaking, haunting and tragic story, there’s anything like it.
