A concise summary of use of ceramic restorations in modern dentistry. I found this video useful

Very nicely explained and easy to understand. He was my restorative course tutor at Uclan, his style of teaching has always been like this and evidence based.
    Thank you

Can I use monolithic zirconia as a bridge? It will be minimal prep and no risk of chipping.

Yes monolithic zirconia can be used as a bridge.
The data is only up to 4 units so I wouldn’t go longer than this.
The risk of chipping with monolithic zirconia is low and it would tend to break rather than chip but success rates are very good/
There are good guidelines at downloadcentre-gb.ivoclarvivadent.com and good guidelines for E.max too.
Be careful in grinders and with patients with small teeth where metal ceramic would often still be considered the better option.

Are emax press bridges also at risk of chipping?

Press only emax are suitable for bridges but rather than chipping they break at the connectors so I don’t recommend emax bridges and never at the back of the mouth.
For bridges monolithic emax is best but if you want aesthetic bridgework then layered zirconia is best.
Layered zirconia is less liable to chipping at the front of the mouth as occlusal forces are lower so is acceptable.
There are a number of reasons for chipping of zirconia but the labs are better with it and avoiding the reasons why it chips and for highly aesthetic anterior bridges I use layered zirconia.
Bond the zirconia with a resin cement like Panavia V5 which has a MDP primer (this is also in the new scotchbond)
You can also use gold ceramic for aesthetic anterior bridges but the cost of gold is prohibitive and not many labs do gold ceramic.
Unfortunately there is no perfect material but I hope this helps

Personally since doing your course I’ve fallen in love with monolithic zirconia.
I don’t advertise myself as a high end cosmetic dentist and to be honest unless you are doing a single central incisor with shade matching patients can’t seen any difference. To be able to do 0.3mm margin (the 360 degree veneer prep) as you called it has honestly changed my dentistry for the better

I know zirconia doesn’t bond aswell as emax. However so far I’ve had no issues for the last 3 years. And I use panavia for the reasons you mentioned
