How to deal with anxiety by shifting your attention

  • We often try to deal with anxiety by trying to argue with ourselves. Maybe trying to convince ourselves that things will be ok. It doesn’t always work, and instead we are then lost in our own minds, and not in the room.
    This is a different approach.
    Just noticing when your mind has disappeared off into the future or the past and - gently, kindly - bringing it back to the present.
    That’s not always easy to do, so using your senses to help is useful. Touching something, listening to sounds, changing your body position.
    Your mind will still drift, but you might get more from your life.
