    Since I knew this incident had a positive outcome, I couldn't help but think about the ground crew that just finished fixing up that runway ... only to watch a 767 drag its left engine all the way down the thing at 100 mph. But in seriousness, great job by the flight crew, tower, and everyone involved. That level of professionalism, even in a stressful situation, is inspiring to listen to.

      Heh, yeah I can imagine the runway workers watching in dismay as the sparks flew. But I'm betting that aside from the need to do a walkdown to find debris, the runway probably wasn't damaged.

    I was a pilot for United Airlines, and flew the 767-300 for 15 years retiring at age 65 in 2015. In those 15 years, I flew into LAX many times. Kudos to both the pilots and air traffic controllers for their professionalism and calmness. I have great respect with the all of the air traffic controllers I worked with (and still do) and thought LAX ATC was some of the best. They did a text book landing. There have been other instances of this same sort of 1 gear not down landing and they have all had good outcomes. It's just basically landing the plane as normal and keeping it as straight as possible and then lowering the left wing to the ground. When it can go bad is when the landing gear is down and all seems well till they land and then one of the gears collapse. There are other video's on here of planes landing with one landing gear not working.

    I witnessed a similar event back in 2001 with a passenger plane. I used to work directly north of PHX a few miles. When I got off work I looked toward the airport to see a passenger airline with its wings perpendicular to the ground flying over the runway. It turns out the landing gear indicator stated that one of the gear wasn't fully down.
    Airport crew had their binoculars out to see if the landing gear was down and it did appear that it was down. The plane landed without incident. A faulty indicator was to blame, not the landing gear.

    That landing was smooth as silk. It was nice to see the ground crew and the tower going out of their way trying to get a good look at this condition condition and the pilot willing to make such a low pass a couple times just to get confirmation on what he thought was the case. It's unfortunate anyone got hurt getting out of that airplane but he must have tripped over something because that landing was far too smooth to get hurt by any movement of the airplane. Glad to hear all souls are safe.

    Those gear-struts are borderline bulletproof… initially supporting the weight of the entire aircraft for 300-500m until it eventually let go and then the weight fell on the engine, equally as tough… as too much pressure pushing up from the bottom of the engine and it COULD have detached, flipped up… and caused a seriously bad situation with regards to fuel/fires etc. The strength of the B767 is clear for all to see and it’s no wonder why it’s still so common still. Built to last.
    Props to Tower for their offers of help and support, props to the crew for staying calm too… I LOVE a positive outcome!💪🏼

    • @jemand8462
      @jemand8462 2 роки тому

      I know right? I mean the pilot probably rolled to the right as much as possible, so there wasn't as much weight on the gear door, but still, it's crazy how well it took the "landing".
      About the engine: imagine how much power the engine produces, it has to be attached really good to the wing so that's not the most surprising thing to me. Plenty of airplanes landed on their engines before.

    • @cw8537
      @cw8537 2 роки тому

      Wouldn’t the weight of the airplane on the right strut just be normal? The left wing was still flying so there wouldn’t have been any extra weight. Increased dynamic load, but the aircraft still weighs the same. So, not extra weight.

    • @jemand8462
      @jemand8462 2 роки тому

      @@cw8537 Yeah it would have a little more then half of the weight of the plane I guess - more because it's lower then a regular gear. At the same time the pilots would probably have input aileron all the way to the right so that the right gear has the maximum weight possible as long as there's enough airflow over the wings. I think he didn't mean literally the whole weight of the airplane - he probably meant the whole "usual" weight of the left gear.

    • @ariochiv

      While I'm not an "expert," the 767 is an older design, first flying in the 1980's, when small digital cameras didn't exist. This issue already had a solution. the gear indicator system worked. If the lights not on the gear is not down/locked. The visual inspection was more of a hope that the gear indicator was malfunctioning. It didn't have any impact on the outcome.

    They might have merely been doing their job, but that is an exemplary professional attitude and one that deserves some kind of acknowledgement if not an award.
    No pilot would like to find himself in that position, but in the case he does, this is the kind of support he needs to have. And no matter how good and chilled that flight crew was, the smoothness of that touchdown must have been partly because of those guys on the other side of the radio.

It was there getting the main landing gears brakes replaced as well as other things and a trainee was the one doing the job. One of the support for the gear had an incorrect pin that had sheared off causing the support to come loose and it ended up binding up the gear which in turn prevented if from coming down either by normal operation or gravity.
