- So...I'm trying to make my own wardrobe. Why? Mainly because this is something I've always been interested in, but also because I have had this real desire recently to learn as many practical skills as I can. I think learning to make my own clothes definitely feeds into my desire to live a sustainable lifestyle and be a minimalist that incorporates colour and fun into their wardrobe.

The more I learn how to make my own clothes the more I value clothes. Its an art
It’s been said that as birds will find north, as bees will find flowers, knitters will always find yarn. Immy, I’m so happy to see that your knitting journey has taken you on to circular needles, as well as those absolutely gorgeous colours of cotton yarn. I am loving the small glimpses we are seeing of this jump-ah (🤣), and I am 💯 stoked to see you wearing the final jumper! Love DIY!! Love Vlogust!! TYSM, Ⓜary💕
I would consider myself an experienced knitter but it takes me weeks if not months to finish a sweater so don’t be hard on yourself that it’s taking longer than you thought! It’s a wonderful hobby and I hope you will continue to enjoy it and share your knitting journey with us.
I’m about to be 70, and have been knitting since I was 6. It’s the best thing I have ever learned. It’s a wonderful skill. Have fun.
I've recently picked up knitting, and have been crocheting for a while- I'm so excited to see what you create! I'm also glad to find another sustainably minded vegan who is knitting. I get really hung up on yarn choices- cotton's properties aren't right for many of the garments I want to make, and though there are other plant based fibers, they often don't have the necessary stretch of wool. I've been trying to find a method of obtaining wool yarn that I am comfortable with and that I don't believe supports animal cruelty, and there's just a lot of varying information out there. Not to mention a lot of vegans are uncompromising and just say to use acrylic yarn; but it being a plastic rules it out for me. I believe there are sustainable and non harmful ways to produce wool- but is any wool yarn on the market /actually/ cruelty free, and how can we know for sure, etc. etc.... all that to say, making for yourself is such a valuable and sustainable skill to have and I would really value hearing your opinions about yarn fibers!
Knitting: two pointy sticks and a ball of yarn, and two stitches… knit and purl. Oh sure, some may say that knitting has many layers of complexity, but from these simple tools and the honing of a few basic skills, one can make so many amazing things. Knitting is complex simplicity!! Immy, I am feeling the knitting love… and the late night hours spent lost in the love of learning and the joy of creativity. Your knitting journey is inspiring and I am here for the full ride. This is so cool!! Perhaps you will love Autumn even more now that you will have two fabulous hand knit jumpers to wear. Ⓜary🧶
As a younger woman, I knitted and sewed my own clothing and then made cute little dresses for my daughter when she was little. Then a slew of Barbie doll clothing for little girls in my life from left over scraps. During Covid lock down, I sewed woven rag rugs and quilt tops which was great fun using up old clothing items and the rest of my cloth scraps.
Now, I'm taking an indefinite break from those hobbies. I need to get out more now and socialize. And,
unless one uses recycled materials or yarn, making clothing items can get pretty expensive!
But I love how you've landed in the U.S. and "hit the ground running" to try new hobbies and interests in your new environment. No shrinking violet you! But a full grown English rose!
Immy!! I love the video! Within the first 20 seconds, I noticed the carabiner holding your overalls and that is such a cool repair! You've inspired me to try knitting again :)
I love crocheting my clothes maybe one day I can try knitting. But I prefer using 1 hook :)
You've inspired me to pick up an old knitting project: white fluffy scarf with flippers that looks like a baby seal 🦭
For neater sides in knitting, just slip the first and last stitch. Looks great. Can you please create a playlist for the knitting and crocheting 🙏🏻💕
Also, for faster knitting for those that don’t knit continental style, I discovered Portuguese knitting. Very Pink knits has a series. I can’t get over how much faster it is. It has made top down sweater knitting a delightful experience. There are loads of UA-cam videos for the technique. It’s relaxing and somehow just works with my brain better. My continental knitting was a chore. I’m self taught English style knitting but being left handed it requires quite a bit of hand movement. Portuguese knitting doesn’t. I hope that makes sense. Hello and a new subbie from Alaska. I used to watch your videos, especially your diy skincare, and love the content. 🙋🏻♀️🏔️💕
I make all my own woolies and now onto my husband's too but I'm feral, I just can't stick to complications such as patterns so have a formula of making a rectangle for the back, then halve it for the front if a cardigan with decreasing where I feel it needs to or make a rectangle again then the top bit flips over like a collar. But for the arms I completely stopped making separate arms and just pick up stitches around the arm hole with a crochet hook and go round and around until desired length is reached. It makes a novel original garment but it's so much fun just to have something like no other. Endless creativity and something for the many rainy English days xxx plus I use leftovers to make a hat ;)
I love knitting too! Something else that might help you is a safety line - has saved my projects a few times 😊
I’m so delighted that you’ve discovered the meditative joy of knitting (and circulars!) knitting UA-cam is a wonderful thing, bmandarines, creabea, knitting traditions, orchids heart, Kat weaver are all an inspiration. I also urge you to look at cruelty free wool check out knitting for olive and woolly mammoth fibres, some natural dyers get to know the flock that their wool comes from. You’ll not regret this skill 🧶
Hi Immy, I’m so excited to see you knitting!
As a yarn dyer and also serial knitter, crocheter and sewist, I hope some of this may help: -
Cotton, although vegan, is incredibly heavy on water consumption as is the cotton dyeing process. Cotton has a tendency to sag and stretch as it has little elasticity. So once you’ve washed and blocked your jumper, continue to lay it flat to dry when washed and store folded, rather than hung on a hanger.
Cotton will also not be an ideal choice for all projects. For example, non-superwash wools are perfect for colourwork jumpers.
Superwash vs non-superwash is also something you may wish to look into and the treatment itself also varies between Europe, which has stricter practises and elsewhere.
Wool has a fantastic range of properties and you may also be more likely to find producers local to you. In terms of merino, check for those using non-mulesing practises.
This is a lot and as usual, I don’t think there’s any truly perfect answer. Hope this helps, there’s so much more I could say, but I think this comment is already long enough!
Oh, I also meant to add, Ravelry is an excellent resource for patterns for both knitting and crochet.
It’s the carabiner on the overalls for me haha❤
Wool and the Gang is perfect for 1 of your 1st projects. I can't wait to see if you fall down the knit socks rabbit hole.
I have been knitting for years, but still need to write everything down, and constantly measure.x
Tincan knits is amazing for beginners. Recycles waters bottles are great as well.
Really loving this summer series, Immy. Cheering you on and the jumper looks amazing so far!
Been following you for a while and wanted to say I’ve been more conscience about sustainability thanks to you. I commend you on making your own clothes, however it seems to me that going to a second hand shop would be sustainable rather then making your own
I am super impressed with your knitting considering you are a new knitter. Even I could not have finished it all in one day, and I am a fast knitter. You are doing such a great job!
I have knitted since one day 7 years old, I told my grandmother I was bored. Especially knitting socks I have a feeling of magic when 5 sticks and a ball of yarn forms a sock.
I started knitting last autumn, and I’m loving it. So far I’ve made a sweater, some socks, a cardigan and a few linen tops for summer. Learning new techniques is so fun, and I find that I really appreciate my handmade pieces and take good care of them ❤️ such a lovely hobby fit for slow living
I can knit socks thats about it, have not knittet anything in years. I enjoyed it in Winter.
How fun! I love this!
Love the knitting content. Your cardigan looks so much better than the first garment I made, which I still have purely to look back at. It’s been said that in Nordic areas a mistake in the knitted piece brings protection and good luck. So don’t stress about mistakes.
Aw thats so sweet, makes me feel better about my little mistakes ❤
I don't know if I'd be able to try something like this, but more power to you! It's looking great so far and your persistence inspires!
So impressed with your knitting journey! I'm gonna dust mine off now and join you:)
You reminded me that I love knitting ❤
Hi Emmy so far the jumper is looking good. Great job.👍👍❤
Love that you've started knitting! Loved this vid :)
This video is so exciting ! ❤ I was inspired by Lena too and I’m knitting my first hat at the moment.
Also green really compliments your green eyes because red and green are opposite on the colour wheel.
I’ve been knitting and crocheting for many, many, many years and never made a garment. I’m so impressed with you.
im so glad you said your yarn was made of cotton
The colors look wonderful!
I love knitting to the colours of the season. I find a colour i like, then the pattern. I love the idea of the three colours you are doing.x
had to stop the video to mention that i love your carabiner clip hack for your overalls😅 i think one is the hardest parts for me is just getting a project started. once i get over that hump, I'm usually good from there😁
The colours are beautiful! Enjoyable video ♥
this is so cool!!
also you looked great in that black silky blouse!
I'm not interested in knitting myself - but i still had fun watching you dive into this new endeavor. =)
I love that you are using what you learned in making your first sweater to make this next one even better! Also, those colors are lovely!
As a long time knitter I wish my first sweater was a fraction of that well done!! Good going!!🧶🧶
Wow! My Mom could knit (not any longer because she has arthritis in her hands). But I never figured it out (my tension is horrible!) I sew instead (I have made clothes, but not in awhile now). I'm just SO IMPRESSED with your progress! So a huge WELL DONE YOU! from me! (and I LOVE the colors!)
I wouldn't know the number of times I'm so grateful I learned to make clothes in childhood & developed efficacy throughout the years ongoing & just want to say Good for you & us all , as it is Truly Never Too Late to learn anew ! As creators of the New Age Natural Do no Harm world this is the way we co-create ! Thanks for more inspiration ❤❤❤
Well done you! Learning to knit is one thing but reading a pattern is a whole different language. I enjoy knitting and crocheting more during the winter when I spend more time inside.
Im so excited about this ! I have been knitting for 3 years now and I am obsessed! 😍
Currently knitting whilst watching this video 😂 After watching your last video about the cardigan you knitted I suddenly felt the urge to take up knitting, so thank you for giving me a hobby, I lost my creative spark a while back. I'm using chunky wool and 10mm needles and going to knit a really basic scarf. I tried using thin wool and 4mm needles last night and struggled with it. Might even give crocheting a go 😁 Knitting or crocheting, which is easier peeps? I have some thin wool which I can't knit with so going to try crocheting with it.
This is inspiring me to advance beyond the scarves I learned to knit during the pandemic;) Those colors look amazing!
Love the colors!
Ok, so I love this. The colours you have chosen are 👌The thing is, the end result will be so much better than anything machine made in my opinion. A really enjoyable series Immy x
So cool to be able to watch a video from you everyday this month !
Damn, girl... would NOT know you haven't been doing this for years. It looks so pro to me. Congrats and your sweater's gonna be gorgeous!
That is very good for a second attempt, slow is good because it means that you will wear it and look after it, well done looking forward to more clothes making
So inspiring!
Been subscribed and liking since you were in London......Love being on your creative journey with you makes me want to revisit past hobbies like fabric dying and batik. Your cardigan is nice don't stress Immy finished is better than perfect 💜❤
Your stitches look so neat and uniform for a beginner! As a knitter since age 7 I'm so happy to see you tried and have enjoyed knitting thus far.
I really enjoy watching your channel..Cotton is definitely vegan, however the amount of water the cotton growers have a huge impact on the water wild life and surrounding produce producing farms.
Mills for cotton have a huge carbon foot print...I'm an Australian, The Murry Darling Basin is experiencing all sorts of environmental issues, including thousands of fish dying... All up and down the River.. frightening..😢
Thank you for your patience ❤
I can't wait for you to discover socks❤
Excited to watch you go on this journey!
Wow it looks too beautiful!
That cardigan is BEAUTIFUL 🥰🥰
yay!
I wish l could be a knit😮 you so talented ❤
The yarn is beautiful. It’s so hard to find cotton yarn 🧶
you are going pretty fast, i once knitted a scarf (granted, it was wide and very long), and i think it took me almost a month to get it done. knitting is HARD
what was the cardigan pattern? I really like it, quirks and all.
Lovely video once again, Immy!
How did you start getting into knitting? I’d love to start knitting but I’m so overwhelmed with all the resources
it always throws me when you call a sweater a jumper, lol.
hey sista you own the deep wine colour xx
Your knitting is great! I'm so impressed! For some reason I just can't work knitting out. 🤷♀️🙈
Hello there… high school sewing teacher here from northern 🇨🇦. I love to hear that you’re creating your own anticapitalist wardrobe with your sewing and embroidery skills. Just wondering, have you heard of (or tried) Sashiko? It is the Japanese art of mending fabric with beautiful stitches. It is functional repair combined with hand embroidery using visible stitches and sometimes visible patches. I’m new to this skill, but my older SIL does amazing Sashiko on plain denim shirts that she buys from the thrift store. I just did some Sashiko mending on two pillow cases, and I love it. Have you heard of Sashiko? If you like embroidery, I highly recommend. I hope you are having a great day. Ⓜ️ary
Hi again, second comment from me. I am not sure if my first comment is suitable as I wrote it when you had originally mentioned using your sewing and embroidery skills to make your own wardrobe. Now for some strange reason I cannot delete my comment. Sorry about that, Ⓜ️ary
where do you order your kits for knitting from? I love to knit
Man, it took me months to knit a sweater 🙈
Could u do a tutorial for the same pls.❤
There are different knitting styles. The continental style is the quickest. ua-cam.com/video/bOyzsHp3Quc/v-deo.html If you plan on knitting more jumpers you might be interested in checking that out.
