This is the first ever completion of Trust Fling in 0 portals (Portal 2 Challenge Mode).
In November 2022, Nidboj132 demonstrated using a simulation that it is possible for the turret to slam into the scripted momentum trigger and be launched to the player. Recent simulations by j_p_smith showed that the probability of this occurring is around 1/30000.
Demo: 1drv.ms/u/s!Au...
Full 3-hour run: • [Full Recording] Trust...
GETTING THE TURRET:
The first time the button is pushed in a run, the dropper drops a sphere, then five items of garbage (in a random order), then another sphere. According to j_p_smith's simulations, the turret can only feasibly be launched to the player if it is one of the first three items of garbage (not counting the spheres). If it isn’t, the level can be immediately restarted for increased efficiency.
To launch vertically off the first diagonal panel, I use a lineup found by Black_Semka: I position myself next to the third faith plate at an x-coordinate of around -526, look towards the faith plate at around -90 degrees, then jump and move forwards. (This setup is quite lenient, as it works when landing on the faith plate within about 0.6 units of -526. Some have also claimed to be able to get the vertical launch consistently without a lineup by strafing a certain amount between the third faith plate and the diagonal panel.) When I reach the first diagonal panel, I spam jump and then strafe towards the lower end of the second diagonal panel to trigger the scripted momentum.
AFTER CATCHING THE TURRET:
Once I have a turret, I lay it down and jump on its head until my hitbox receives a small amount of negative rotation (a glitch known as reverse PPD). I know I have the required rotation (≥ 0.02°) if I get launched away from the turret a little (sometimes sideways, or in this case, upwards). If you are unsure whether this rotation has occurred, you can continue with the route and return to this step if you don’t have noticeable rotation by the end.
Next, I lean against the black door frame, decrease my y-coordinate to somewhere just over 1325.6, zoom in to aim at a horizontal angle of around -179.9, then hold the forwards key until I begin to move forwards. I repeat this at least 15 times to ensure that I have enough rotation (≥ 0.1°) for the next step to work consistently.
I then perform this one last time, except that after I begin to move forwards, I keep my view angle constant and walk sufficiently far backwards and forwards that I increase my rotation each time that I pass the door frame. I walk back and forth at least 60 times (60 backwards and 60 forwards), to ensure that I have enough rotation (≥ 2°) for the next step to work consistently. If you prefer to be safer by walking less far forwards each time, it will take more than 60 repetitions to get the required rotation.
Still keeping my view angle constant, I walk forwards until I am slightly past the door frame, and then stand still for around 83 seconds to ensure that I have enough rotation (≥ 20.5°) for the next step to work consistently.
I then lean against one half of the door (not the middle of the door, as this causes a different rotation speed) for around 87 seconds. I now have between 55° and 70° of rotation, which is optimal for clipping through the door. Having less than this increases the risk of getting stuck inside the door during the clip, which may cause a softlock.
To perform the clip through the door, I first lay down the turret and then position its head near the centre of one half of the door. I then lean against the other half of the door, being careful not to step up onto any part of the turret as this could cause me to lose all my rotation. I don’t wait here for too long, as being close to the door is increasing my rotation. I jump (not step) onto the head of the turret, which causes me to clip through the door.

SuperAiderton, several hundred hours into grinding: *_“NO!”_*
Context?
@@bluetintedchromee3881 getting the turret to fling to the player is complete luck and only happens once in every several thousand attempts. SuperAiderton spent hundreds of hours pressing the button waiting for the turret to do this map with zero portals, otherwise it takes 2.
Finally, no need for an asterisk in LP spreadsheet! Fantastic job!
What? Sorry, ik you're jargoning

I feel like the hundreds of hours of resetting before to get the good rng are more impressive than that tho
I love speed running. 3 hours of jumping on a turret/running into a door just to subtract 2 from a number.
Actually an incredible job though o7
And over 7000 attempts that made it through to the button press before luck allowed them to execute this wizardry
3 hours? The turret getting to them was pure rng, this run in total, took hundreds of hours
Consider how low the chance even is to get the turret, it's much much more than 3 hours.
until i saw the end, i thought it was some kind of a rick roll video.
Me too, I thought it was gonna be a screamer like old times lmao
Here is what I understand about the run (yes, I know its all explained in the description)
Start-1:00 - basic runner go fast stuff, very clean
1:00 - 5:00 - wtf is happening, why did this take 3+ hours
5:00-end: wait, did it really take 3 hours to setup this clip!?
More time u take more the physics engine drifts of so collisions will thinnen up or get more thick
for those of you confused, he was killing time waiting for the atoms to align just right to phase through the door. this is an extremely rare occurrence and has not been documented to happen naturally in real life yet.
Did you know it’s a 1/(10^3,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000) chance for a single atom to quantum tunnel through another atom?
(1 in 10 to the power of 3 undecillion)
man literally wtf is going on
First trick is air strafing, to slightly change air momentum and direction. Same as in Counter Strike, hold movement to the side, and gradually turn the camera to the side also.
Second is the Scripted Fling Trigger Abuse. Basically you're meant to use portals to fling yourself, but to make sure the fling always works the same way the devs added a trigger box that gives you exact speed and momentum if you enter it from the portal surface side. You can abuse that box by entering it kinda sideways but not really, to get that speed without actually doing the fling.
Next is the prop luck. That is actually pure luck and Source engine random physics. For some reason the props also react to the fling trigger, so the junk Turret gets flung to the player.
After that, the turret is laid on the side, and a Physics Hitbox Deformation is performed, in which the players' hitbox is moved in a rotational way, because it's colliding with an object in a specific way. If you were to put a cube to where the player is standing, the cube would tumble off, with rotation applied to it at the point of contact. For some reason, the players' physics hitbox works the same way, so you can just rotate it sideways, and then use that new hitbox to phase through doors and thin walls as soon as you're no longer colliding with a physics object, because the physics hitbox (that's been rotated to be way past the door) is replaced with a fresh Movement hitbox (that's set to vertical by default, and spawns at the center of the old hitbox) and the players' position is always set to where their Movement hitbox is. Or something like that, I'm not an expert.
tl;dr: it's a lot of silly glitches and source physics jank

@@sergewind2208 Are the 3 hours of tomfoolery necessary for the hitbox displacement or is that just the speedrunner doing calculations in their head ?

I actually think I had the turret come to the platform and caught it on one of my few playthroughs. I were confused as what I needed to use it for.
You need the turret to glitch against the platform in the perfect way to be launched back without any portals which is MUCH more rare
Did you get there without the portals or move the portals before it came?
I think it’s a 1/30,000 chance for that to happen or smth like that.
@@rtxagent6303 I used portals, as it was just for the sake of nostalgia :)
Impressive dedication. I'd found that going fast onto the first faith plate allowed for getting over to the button in 0 portals, which would make each reset quicker. I never had any idea of how to do the rest of the level in 0 portals though.

incredible
can a source engine nerd tell me why was it necessary to wait that long for this to work?
He did a glitch by jumping on the turret that rotates the players hitbox so that if he stood next to the door and pushed himself the game would think he was supposed to be on the other side of the door and teleport him through.
Since you can’t actually see the players hitbox rotating, it takes a long time to get it just right. If you look at the timer it took around 3 hours.
Also the reason no one else has done this before is because the chance of the turret glitching over to the player without any portals is 1/30,000. It took him around 7,300+ attempts to finally get it.
