When I was a Junior in High School, 1971,, a History teacher told us that if you want to make money and retire by the age of 50, buy 40 acres of land and plant it all in Walnut. In 15-20 years you can start harvesting the nuts ($$$), then when you reach 50, sell the trees as lumber.
That's the best idea man everyone loves black walnut
Tyler, I live in south western Ohio and walnut is very common here. The trouble is size and quality. The big trees are cut and as you know it takes ,weeks before they grow back.😊
Your black walnut is thick as flees here in Missouri , infact I killed one standing this last summer in my yard you can have it if you come get it .
Here in Alabama we see some wild walnut out in the woods but mostly we see them around old home places
That's why the nails. Probably a clothes line
Here in SW Missouri, we have an abundance of black walnut and buyers who go around trying to but your standing trees on a percentage basis. I obtain logs of other species to have milled to supply my woodworking projects. The agreement with the sawyer is I pay for ruined blades. A new mill I took to recently charges $100 per hr with a $100 minimum. And $50 per blade if he hits metal up to 2 blades. He quits after 2 blades and contacts the owner about sawing further into the log. Can get pretty expensive .LOL So, when I take a log to the mill, I make sure the sawyer knows if it was a yard tree, fence row tree, edge of the woods tree. or middle of the woods tree. Edge of the woods trees often have big nails from a deer stand that may have been there 50 yrs ago. I don't actually use much black walnut, but use all other native trees including white & post oak, honey locust, hackberry, elm, persimmon, sassafras, maple. I stay away from wood that changes color like red cedar, hedge apple, mulberry(looks much like hedge and turns brown same as hedge). Don't have much useable black cherry here.
Keep us in the loop on what you do with the rest of the black walnut .
I'm with Brit, both logs were beautiful but the black walnut is gorgeous. Look forward to your videos every Monday and Friday!
The walnut has one of the most beautiful wood grains in the world I think.
Wow 40 years I’ve been a fan of black Walnut custom pieces such as that beautiful piece you have! 👍💯🇺🇸🇺🇸
I love sawing walnut. Im in NC and it pops up quite a bit. I run a 0 Frick circle mill as a hobby and buy and log timber. I habe never sawn a big sigle walnut with out hitting a lot of metal. People used to love driving big ass nails in walnuts. I had a 40 in walnut that i ruined a whole set of carbide bits on.
Nature sure turns out some beautiful things! All that wood looks fabulous 🎉
Mich.has quite a bit of black walnut.i have one in my saw log pile.ya gotta love walnut n Daisy dukes.
Great video like black walnut tough on blades even with out hit nails stay cool
I follow a guy in Pennsylvania who has circular saw operation.
They use metal detector on every log they cut, flip with for lift.😊
Thanks for the cut, and awesome to see the video. Got it all stickered and stacked today.
I'll have to bring you some other cool stuff when we pick up the rest.
(Nail-free, of course)
You’re very welcome!
In southwestern Ontario. Walnut is everywhere Mostly sugar maple/ red oak. Some white oak. Lots of soft maple and white pine. That’s a beauty walnut log today my friend
Its wort it, I would never see this type of content here in Ireland if it wasn't for you guys 👏👏😎
Glad we can show you this lifestyle!
I live in the Pittsburgh, PA area and there are several Black Walnut trees by my Sister's house. If you want, I will gather up some walnuts and send then to you. That way you can grow your own 😂
I'd take a chance and chop the rest of the walnut up for wood turnings! Makes beautiful bowls!
Northwest missouri guys! Black walnuts are everywhere up here, every kind of white oak you can think of. Six to seven different maples, black locust, three or four different elms, and some Dunston chestnuts, some of us trying to bring back the chestnut trees. And a whole bunch other different species.
But how cold does it get there I'm from the Deep South and I don't want to live any place it snows. But I do wish we had those trees around here we just bought an LT35 and have been cut a bunch of pine for a new house we do have a lot of white oaks on our property .
@@johnm.robertssr.2953 Missouri is cold in the winter and it snows here. Some winters have a lot more snow than others. In the summer; it is classified as semi-tropical; hot and humid.
@@johnm.robertssr.2953 lol unfortunately we get the hottest of the hot and the coldest of the cold! It literally was 104° and 96% humidity yesterday and it has been -16° for a week in the winter. With snow. 🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️ i cant do this heat lol i want to summer in Antarctica! 🤣😂🤣
That's awesome man great work
That’s a beautiful piece of black walnut. Should bring a good return and would make a fine bar top, table top, counter top and and many others. WOW. We have lots of black walnut trees on our farm in southern Ohio and have milled some nice pieces but nothing quite like what you have. Really enjoy your channel and the variety you and Britt bring to UA-cam. E joy your weekend. 👍🇺🇸🚜
Call the Duck Dynasty guys with metal detectors to scan your black walnut log for additional nails!
Hello from Fayetteville TN.🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
Here in Iowa we have all kinds of walnut trees. I have 7 good sized ones in my front yard and 6 or 8 voulenteers growing around the property.
Missouri has a lot of walnut. Beautiful stuff.
I bought a $20 handheld metal detecting wand on Amazon for the logs that you get from peoples yards and along fence lines, and with just a quick pass over a questionable log I feel a whole lot better!!! Like you said about not getting many with nails, I get it, but you still get some that you can't be sure of, and for less than the cost of a blade, I feel it's worth it!!
She makes the whole channel.
Black Walnut is very common in Iowa. They are as common as Oak in many areas.
Love the hard work you both put in cutting hard wood logs outstanding love the smell fresh cut wood as well
Fellow with a portable sawmill that milled my home/woodlot made clear up front that any metal hit brought a charge for an immediate blade change and a presumed sharpening. I agreed wholeheartedly. Stay hydrated. Be well.
my dad had a mill he would not saw a log from around house//fence row unless owner payed for damage i,ve seen him saw any thing from bolts to r/r spikes you cannot make money tearing up saw blades love you all mrs britt on the ol ford is a classic
I live in central WV..I have very many black and white walnuts on my 160 acre farm..They are all over the state..and black cherry..
thats good the wife helps thats hard work
Brittany you are a princess!
Very nice wood guys .
I saw Black Walnut very often. More often than not, I hit nails in Black Walnut. Usually towards the pith of the log. 50 years ago, everyone must have driven nails and RR spikes in the trees. Wish I knew why? I always charge the customer for all the damaged blades. Happy Sawing.
Hi Kids,
GREAT VIDEO! You got my vote your wive has a Perry Toss
Had to leave to go get stitches taken out of my shoulder but back and watched to rest. Beautiful but I got into much the same deal with Beautiful Black walnut. Sawed a 6X5 X 8 ft for a couple and made a custom candel holder for their wedding. 7 months later they seperated and he cut it up and burned it in the fire place. Good jmob and you still have the best partner you could get. Be thankful. Stay cool was 93 in East Tn today.
Been away from the channel 4 awhile, but now I'm back watching and I see you gotcha some tats going. Nice looking log but way 2 much trouble for the beauty of the wood. Good luck going forward.
Why not get a small metal detector? Looks like it would pay for itself in saw blades... Love your videos - keep 'em coming!
Here in West Virginia we have plenty of Walnut. Keep up the good work.
I'm one of those people who sees a lot of black walnut. I've burned black walnut for 45 years. For 40 years, I've got cut-offs from a sawmill about 7 mile from my home. I also have two groups of 6 black walnut trees in my back yard, and probably 200 3 year old seedling that I need to thin out after letting them grow instead of mowing the area. I live in Indiana, and we have a bunch of black walnut trees. We have a lot less English or " carpathian " walnut trees here, but it isn't uncommon.
I've definitely cut some beautiful pieces of walnut up over the years.
I also aquired a lot of the wood that had metals in it because the sawmill didn't want to run it. Over the years I've only broken one chain, and knocked off three teeth on my chainsaw chains, but I've had to change chains a few times while cutting logs.
Something rather odd here. Around 3 or 4 years ago I got done cutting a piece of wood, and I had cut through three 9mm bullets and never knew it until I was done and loading the wood. It never effected the way the saw cut. I'm guessing it was copper case lead bullets.
Back in the day for some reason you will always find nails in a tree log , it’s a wonder that you didn’t find any lead ball from gunfire way back.
Beautiful walnut. Trade walnut foy blade cost.Thank you! Phil
Plenty of black walnuts here in Indiana.
Indiana has walnut trees. The property I use to own had a half dozen on it. I live on the west side of Indianapolis and a couple of our large farmers planted a couple of groves of walnut trees. you have enough property to plant a few to give it a try.
Walnut is EXPENSIVE!
I was told basically the same thing.
SW Missouri, we have tons of Black Walnut. I’m a woodturner and get tired of turning it.
We have a bunch of black walnut in Michigan 🙂
I love woodworking
Here in SE Wisconsin, they are just as common as oaks, hickory, maples and cherry. My local sawmill always has a huge stock.
Good Old Box Turkey Call Material There🦃🦃🦃✝️✝️✝️
I always enjoy watching your videos!! I have a question?? What is wrong with your Barko 160 loader, never seen you run it and wonder if it’s operating and if you just don’t use it?
Tyler take a bucket full of that black walnut dust and put it on a plant that you want gone lol it’s about five times stronger than round up
I'd bet you could make some awesome pieces with that type of wood
It’s a beauty just like Brittany😊
Oregon had a lot of them here
I do have a hard time trying to finding someone to make true number sizes
I live in southern West Virginia and we have a good bit of black walnut here. Most of them are short and we normally get maybe 12 foot or less logs.
We have tons of Black Walnut here in Kansas.
Hello this is Johnny ,I see u learn cedar and black walnut dust off a band mill will kill u lololo. We got a lot of black walnut here in east tenn . If the logs r dry the dust will choke you too dead . Stay safe and keep them videos rolling .
THANKS!
Black Walnut is pretty common here in Indiana.
Классное, интересное получилось видео! Мне очень понравилось! Круто Круто!!!👍👍👍
She is a beauty, oh the black walnut too. LOL
Lots of black walnut in the finger lakes region of new York
we have plenty of walnut up here in east TN
Nice wood
West Virginia has a lot of them
Oregon has a lot of black walnut
Female Sawyer love it great video
Could you sometime explain the settings on the sawmill? I enjoy watching the videos. I use to do a lot woodworking before I got to the point where I had problems standing. Thanks and don’t get over heated in this heat.
Here in western North Carolina,,black walnut trees are everywhere,,I have around thirty on my three acres
Hi❤❤❤
Thanhk you I like your life 😊😊
We have quite a bit of Black Walnut here in my area of NC. I couldn't blame you for cutting your losses. With yard trees, you never know whether they will be full of nails or not. That was pretty though. I've got a rare persimmon log that i'm going to get someday. They usually don't get very big, but this one is ususually large in diameter. The persimmons have never been any good. Bitter! I'm hoping to quartersaw this up for acoustic guitar backs and sides and maybe some electric guitar blanks. The diameter is around 30". Thanks for the video!
Never heard of it used for guitar backs..interesting
it got up to 106 here yesterday. Global warming or as they say here in Texas "Summer Time". I loved sawing music.
Helo im from Brasil
I live in Northeastern Pennsylvania, and oddly there are plenty of black walnut in my area but not a single one on my father's almost 500 acre farm. Even a few of the neighbors adjoining farms don't have any. Not sure why 🤷
When sawing customers' logs I always make it clear that blades damaged by imbedded material will incur a $40 fee for each blade damaged.
We`ve got lots of black walnut hyar in arkansaw. (no nails)
The customer should help you with the damages to your blade's. Or work with you and come to a happy medium on blades.👍 Great You Tube Channel.👍
ever thought about 50 gal drum on wheels to catch your saw dust
😮iowa has a let of back walnut
99 degrees here in Greenwood Ar. Northwest Ar is lousy with good Walnut.
Good old yard tree. Salvage what you can and the rest is firewood
Yes sir!
Keep that black walnut saw dust separated from you other saw dust.
We will be putting this dust in the burn pile.
The Amish in this community in central Ohio have two mill that saw nothing, all day five days a week, but black walnut. The mill I help buy standing timber for often buys whole lots because of the high percentage of walnuts.
Wecsell all we buy to another community where they pay top dollar for walnut. Sawing walnut on the circular saw is not the best use of these logs.
alot in illinois
ya just gotta charge for the blades and let it be known before ya start, nice stuff but they have to pay for it if they want it sawed i have some white walnut in my woodlot and i planted 3 black by my barn for the nuts
I hope that in the future you must inform customers that if you hit a nail or metal; “the customer pays for the blades”. I think that’s only fair, just my opinion.
I GUESS YOU GET THE COMENT I'M ABO TO MAKE OFTEN FROM KNIFE GUYS, IT DONT TAKE MUCH WOOD TO MAKE KNIFE HANDLES, LIKE YOU DONTHAVENOUGH GOIN ON, GOOD LUCK, THAT BLACK WALNUT IS BEAUTIFUL PIECE OF WOOD
By the board foot, and a $50 premium everytime you hit a nail.
With lumber of that quality 2 or 3 hundred dollars for saw blades should not be a problem the slabs are worth a lot of money
😍
It's a shame about that walnut. That is some beautiful wood. In all my years of saw filing for an industrial mill, I learned that nail strikes can be funny. I've seen my 11" wide headsaw blades hit 16 D nails and keep right on cutting like nothing happened. Then I've seen it hit a much smaller nail at a different angle and I have to change the saw blade because of it (as opposed to fixing the teeth while the blade was still on the wheels and finishing the shift).
My dad was from Tippah county Mississippi and he told about some black walnut being in this area of Mississippi. What county are you located?
If it were my log and my mill I would set it aside and as I get blades that are worn and no longer useable for customer work.so with nothing to lose try some more cuts, you may gain some good pieces yet. .
Bet those walnut slabs are worth ovet200 each ought be worth a extra blafe
Joe from California here; why don't you buy a metal detector and give the logs the once over with it. Doing that would lengthen the lifespan of your sawblades.
Sawyers in the Brookhaven area charge $25.00 for each blade that hits a nail or metal.
Same here!
Here it's 35 bucks per blade Tyler. Customers are let known prior to milling
We do 25$ here. Told up front.
Have customers volunteered to buy a new blade for the ones destroyed?
