You are just so funny, even in the worst of it. What everyone here is saying is true; we don't come for the travel literature, we come to watch you and live your adventure alongside.
The Dwarfie Stane is apparently a Neolithic tomb, carved out by hand long before metal tools. In centuries past people thought it was for small people, hence the name. Great video as always Steve!
I met your lovely other half at Kirkwall Airport the other day when she was flying home as I work there. I told her if you’re in Orkney again and need transport I’ll happily drive you around. Take it as a ‘thank you’ for the hours of entertainment and escapism your channel has provided me.
Steve, watching your videos during the pandemic inspired me to find a way to get myself to Shetland and Orkney. I finally managed it this year with two friends! We’re all university students so it was definitely a budget trip, but we had an absolutely fabulous time. Thank you for inspiring people to travel to these beautiful islands. I have loved your latest Orkney videos because all the sights and sounds are associated with such incredible memories now!
Super video Steve! I love the fact that you don't overdub rubbish music or Foley onto your videos. I always feel I'm 'on site' as a result. Your format is flawless. Thank you so much.
Better to try n fail than not try at all ! I was impressed at you filming while walking on that unforgiving footpath ! Nice to see what Hoy is like . Thanks for sharing
The Wikipedia article says that the Old Man formed some time after 1750 and may be in danger of collapsing. It might outlive us or it might be gone in a few years.
There's a video channel on UA-cam called "The Sheep Game". All about an itinerant sheep shearer in Scotland called Cammie (ie Cameron) . Four years ago he made two videos about shearing on Hoy. Entitled "Cammie and the Viking island of Hoy". Worth watching. C.

What incredible weather you've had on your Orkney trip! Not a wasted trip, I still enjoyed the scenery, mind you I didn't have to get wet, muddy feet in the process...
I remember watching a television programme on B.B.C in the seventies where Chris Bonington was actually climbing the Old Man of Hoy, maybe wrong but it was a great watch. Another great video from you Steve.
Here's the thing: If you can make a highly compelling video brimming with gorgeous scenery, historical and geographical facts and dark-ish humour, and keep me engaged for 27 minutes, only to show us a stock image you found on the internet .... well, then you are winning big my friend. Congratulations, I loved it! (P.S. 17:12 was a brilliant shot 🤣)
I think we all know that when Steve Marsh says "Oh no, I've failed..." What he means is "I'm going back and will succeed next time." Excellent video. Excellent channel. Excellent bloke.
The Orkney tourist board should be sponsoring you with all these great Orkney videos. Thanks for another great video. Youve made me feel very homesick and wow youve been very lucky with the weather.
Even sitting here, scotch in hand, watching you walk those uphill miles left me breathless. Thanks for doing the hard work and making my Saturday so much more enjoyable!
We never tire of being "Stuck in the middle with you", Steve! Also never tire of your Sat vlogs! Your trip wasn't a fail, did far better than I suspect, most of us would do! A fantastic day for your walk/sail. Orkney and Shetland definitely on my visit list. Nice one Steve! 😊 👍
You put so much into your videos. Felt your disappointment 😢 however you still as always made an excellent video which my husband and I enjoyed. Thank you Steve.
Aww, so sorry you didn’t make it to the old man Steve, you certainly gave it your best. I see another trip in the future with Alicja and a camp out over night. Really enjoyed your Orkney videos. Thank you ❤xx
Any trip that includes sheep and beautiful scenery isn't a fail in my book! 👍Also nice to know things don't go perfectly for such an experienced traveler as you all the time - makes me feel better when my trips go awry.😊
Another great vid as you explore another gorgeous and little known place. Very impressed with your level of fitness - it can’t be easy vlogging with all your kit while walking at pace on tricky terrain !
What a wonderful way to start a Saturday morning! Hiking a beautiful, peaceful Orkney isle with Steve Marsh. Of course, I am not sore and tired like Steve. I love that the ferry crew recognized Steve. So many people have shared the joy via UA-cam. Good work Mr. Marsh!
So entertaining yet again. Thanks Steve. I luvd it when you did the random race with the two in front of you to get ahead, I thought I was the only one to do that with commentary 😂
Steve you can always be relied upon to provide us with entertainment. You can make something out of nothing much and make it exciting. Will he get there, will he get back. Is he carrying water, what is he going to eat. Keep up the great work. Love the surprise midweek videos as well.
Great effort Steve. and "he has taken the lead!". An amazing island. Thought the Orkney islands where flat. How wrong was I!. Just love this Saturdays video. Thank you again for entertaining us and bring us along with you on your travels. Thank you Thank you. 😄

I do not watch your videos for the destinations, but for the travel. You are my favorite travel vid. I have visited so many places with you as my guide. Thank you for being a present day adventurer
We may not have seen the old man of Hoy but we did see the old man of Montrose (you are a youngster compared to me)😉Cracking video Steve, its a beautiful place👌
The last few days of your Orkney adventures have been fabulous Steve! As I've said before, Orkney is one of our very favorite destinations in the UK and your trips have reinforced some great memories. Sorry you didn't get to the Old Man, but I truly admire your attempt. For us, we took the "easy" way, car ferry from Houton terminal to Lyness, drove to Rackwick, and then the trek to the Old Man. Either way, Hoy (and the rest of the Orkneys) is a real treat. BTW, for anyone taking the ferry to Lyness, highly recommend a looksee at the newly refurbished Scapa Flow Museum. Thanks again for your fine efforts. Cheers.
Lovely adventure Steve on a lovely tiny island. Such a shame you didn’t reach the Old Man of Hoy but that just means you’ll have to return at some point. 😂 I loved the acoustic stone. I am surprised you do not have a day backpack with essentials such as snacks, water & a lightweight extra layer/waterproof to take with you. Safety first and all that! 😊
Steve, hope, you find your happiness again! Yes, you didn't reach the point you wanted to reach, but: SO WHAT. 😊 Hope, you nevertheless enjoyed your walk. We did!
Excellent film and what beautiful weather you have had. You have to come back now to reach the Old Man! Island hopping is such fun, especially with those great little ferries. Hoy is one of the few islands I have not yet visited - but maybe next year?
These orkney vids are the most beautiful, entertaining and an example of the fascinating, glorious parts of the world that I'd never have seen without you. Another excellent video. Never ceases to amaze me how constantly cheerful you are and respectful to everyone. Love the way you talk to all the animals. We stayed in a hotel in North Yorkshire once and every morning my husband would go out and commune with the local sheep. He would baa and they would reply!! Probably telling him to go away .
Another great video, I've enjoyed all three this week, it's good that the weather played ball so you could show us all the wonderful scenery. If nobody else has mentioned it I checked online and the "Dwarfie Stane" is a megalithic chambered tomb carved out of a single block of sandstone. I look forward to the next one🙂
Steve, Thanks for the video as it brought back many memories of Stromness . I was an engineer on the Hamnavoe on its' first visit to Stromness; it actually sat in Leith for a good while before entering service. Somewhere in somebodies album is photo of the ferry, during that visit, with me being one of the souls 'perched' just below the bridge. That was many moons ago (22years+) but still in my many memories of the Northern Isles ferries. Time never allowed a visit to Hoy but the Old Man was seen from the sea, just a couple of times ... Looking forward to more of your travels. Thanks once more.
To be honest, I just enjoyed the walk around Hoy 😂 It looked a great day for it, but definitely needed more time to explore it. Just another reason to return 😊 Hope you're both well. Andy.
The crewmen sounded like decent folk and it's always good to get that extra local information, which is not only helpful to you but now you are sharing with us. It's not a fail in respect of giving us an opportunity to see such beautiful terrain and a part of The Orkneys which for some like me would no longer be accessible despite my love of the outdoors. So thank you and I am sure just like your 3rd time lucky shortest plane journey you will be back again to succeed and tick another achieved mission off your list! Cheers.
My weekend is not complete until I've had my walk in some exotic far flung location accompanied by Steve and as always I wasn't disappointed. Thanks Steve, see you next time. 😃

It was robbed by the 16th century, and some guy left some Persian graffiti on it, and his name written backwards. Bit of a show off apparently.

I couldn't agree more - I love the puffing and panting, and the crunching of footsteps (which the subtitles seem to think are "Applause"!)
My mother was a wireless operator in the Royal Navy based on Hoy towards the end of WW2. Her home was in Kent at the time!
