I sometimes pull the "you know I was born in the 90s" card (with milennials and up, I don't want to get called a milennial by my slightly younger Gen Z friends). But Actually I Vaguely Remember if one had what's called "satellite" (with those BIG ugly dish looking things in the backyard, then they could get "Xtra" channels. So as a I grew up and got tired of the TV shows on MTV, I would actually watch what would be called "MTV 2" & Then MTV had it broke down into the genre of music, MTV Rap, MTV Rock, etc,etc... Fun Times At Band Camp.. LMFAO
I'm in that weird in between period also. Born in 91 remembered most of the mid to late 90s as kid growing up. But cherish the 2000s a lot. I have a bit of a Gen X Mindset with Gen Z Lingo 😂
Good animation seems to happen in cycles. The 1970s was the golden age of Hanna-Barbera. You just mentioned the 90s. Then the 2010s had shows like Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, and My Little Pony.
Rose-colored glasses dude. Go look up all the animated shows released in the last century - Wikipedia has one. There are _factually_ just WAY more great animated shows released in each of the last 2 decades than any previous. In large part it's because there are way, way WAY more animated shows being made in general. Seriously - there were a few gems but by and large Western animation was in a grim state until the mid-late '90s, early '00s. And though I'm not sure this is the reason, the timeline does sync up perfectly: Around that time Toonami took off, which was the first real introduction of anime to most Western audiences and a pretty resoundingly successful market test. So I suspect Western animation complain suddenly realized there was a market for cartoons with somewhat more adult themes, complex plots, and experimental styles - because suddenly those projects started getting the money thrown at them. Up until the mid '90s cartoons were JUST a) children's shows aimed at _very_ young kids, b) a few long-running, firmly established, formulaic, merchandise mule comic book serials, and c) _utter garbage_ literally only existing to sell toys. Gotta give credit to the likes of Animaniacs, Freakazoid, & Dexter's Lab for blazing the trail w/ more adult humor that gave kids some credit - but by '00 new more tonally challenging story-based shows like Batman Beyond & Samurai Jack were showing up... More networks started investing in cartoons... Adult Swim brought in the adult audience... And 20 years after cartoons were all... _barely_ disguised ads for the new Transformers or GI Joe toy lines, and the latest X-Men and Spiderman trades... The most popular kids' cartoon was about _the last human boy and his shape-changing dog in a post-apocalyptic magical fantasy/nightmare land having silly adventures that play out more like acid trips_ and it was equal parts delightfully creative and existentially terrifying- And... AND! THAT show competed w/ another MAINSTREAM KIDS CARTOON about siblings visiting a remote town crawling with cryptids and slowly unraveling a seasons-long conspiracy orchestrated for actual, sensible - but complex, sometimes conflicting, and initially shriuded - purposes; a conspiracy involving prophecy, hidden clues, actual cryptographic puzzles, government conspirators, pacts with demonic extradimensional entities, anomalous spacetime gradually unraveling the fabric of reality and ushering all of Earth into the shadow of an unimaginable eldritch apocalypse... That was on _The Disney Channel._ You know what their marquee cartoons were 20 years prior? That's right - the one about those spunky boy ducks protecting their rich uncle duck's money; oh or the cute chipmunk detectives helping their neighborhood police by solving cute little animal-size crimes. It's 6 years after that now, and the creators of both those cartoons have made *more* cartoons - plus there's a whole new set of cartoons, not just on network TV anymore but also dozens of streaming services, hundreds of independent production companies distributing content online, *thousands* of independent animators cranking out full-time work funded through crowd-sourced support. AND there's the TV Networks. And about a hundred new digital cable channels since the '90s desperate for something to distinguish themselves. Oh, and anime's fully in the US mainstream now, so don't forget all those Japanese production companies making more intentional forays into the American cartoon market. There's SO , SO MUCH animation being released nowadays. The sheer volume means there'll necessarily be a lot of crap; but it only seems like it's ALL crap when you're right in the middle of it. There was just as high if not a higher percentage of crap cartoons in the '90s, and especially before - but we remember the good ones. You look up that list again 10y from now... once the cream of this crop has floated to the top... you'll realize then what an animation golden age you're living in now
The best animated decade was definitely the '80s. The 90s has some cool shows, but the eighties was really the golden age. The 90s had a lot of very boring cartoons of just kids playing outside or kids solving everyday problems or kids doing boring stuff, where is the 80s had stuff like lasers and robots and all that classic Saturday morning goodness.
@@king_fresh27 the '90s had barely anything. I don't care about your precious SpongeBob or rugrats or hey arnold, or all the generic shows about kids playing outside at recess. Yeah, some of the '80s shows were a bit generic, but at least they were cool generic instead of just a simulation of what you could do with your free time instead of staring at a screen.
Yep good old 1981. I was 6. But, my brother was 16 so I knew more about MTV than some kids my age who should have been sleeping instead of watching shows like headbangers ball love that show ❤❤
This hurt. I was born 98 and had two older sisters and nostalgic nerd parents. I grew up on reruns of almost everything my sisters and parents grew up watching, but when I get irritated about something from the 90s, that I watched too, getting remade into a shadow of its former self, it doesn't count cause "I didn't grow up with it like they did....
Daria!!!! Dead level my favorite show anytime I could catch it (remember actually having to watch shows when they came on?!) Anyway, next on Sick, Sad World . . .
Yeah my brother & I named our family’s new kitten (in the 90’s) Daria, partly because the show was so fantastic, and partly because our parents were ultra conservative & had no idea who Daria was, so we thought it was hilarious
I’m not man, Gen Z can start at early as 96’ I would rather be the first of something different than the last of something else. Just a personal association
@@marcuslevis The younger millennials were arguably the last generation to have an internet-free childhood. Internet Zoomers don't understand Millennials. Millennials are the last generation born in the 20th century. Generation Y/Millennials, the generation born in the 1980s and 1990s, comprising primarily the children of the baby boomers and typically perceived as increasingly familiar with digital and electronic technology. 83.1 million people or more than a quarter of the U.S. population, can be considered Millennials by most definitions. The younger millennials were arguably the last generation to have an internet-free childhood. The generation's size exceeds that of the 75.4 million baby boomers. Born after the year 2000 is considered part of iGeneration (aka Generation Z/FORTNITE KIDS). It is so-called due to the technology that existed during the time of their births: iPhone, iPod, iPad, iTunes, Wii, etc, and the way that they are used: individualized. Zoomers! tiktokers, QuaranTEENs, Omegle kids, fortnite kids, tide pod babies, jake paulers, logan paul kids and streamer twitch kids are those born between 2001-2009 and beyond. They all grew up on the same stuff. Generation Z/Zoomers, the generation born in the 2000s and 2010s, comprising primarily the children of the Gen X'ers and typically been raised with screens, smartphones and are the most tech savvy, very much influenced by vloggers and internet celebs. More facts on my playlist and community post
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 it belonged to both, we all lived through that era. Everything meaningful to Millennials is also meaningful to Gen X. However, I love the Gen wars, keep it coming Brian😂😂😂
Try being the youngest born in 94. I kind of technically remember the y2k panic but that's literally the only thing in the 90s I do remember and that's basically the last month of the entire decade lol. I don't feel right calling myself a millennial but since my family didn't even own a dial up computer until I was almost 10 & I had cassettes/vhs' I don't really feel like gen z either since I didn't grow up with more advanced tech and watched basic cable so my tv shows were mostly reruns from the 90s. It really does seem like those of us born in like 92-96 should be our own mini generation since we have a weird division of both millennial and gen z experiences.
@@lilithlaney1759 95 here and yeah relate so hard but it's weird because I remember all that shit and grew up in it. But here's the weird thing even with the being a basically a year apart from Gen Z their mentality is definitely different from ours. It's actually outstanding how little we have in common with them compared to the older Millennials
@@lilithlaney1759 in essence the "mini" generation you mention grew up in the booming of technology. We literally grew into multiple iterations of vhs, DVD, and digital. From small boombox radios with cd players to the iPods then outgrowing those in like 1 or 2. Hell I still remember using the floppy disk 💾 before using a flash drive and now we have SD cards.
@@unfortunateRM 97 here. We're Zillennials. We're the Gameboy Advance SP to the Millennial Gameboy Color and the Zoomer Nintendo DS. The MSN Messenger to the Millennial AIM and the Zoomer... everything. Our first phones were slide phones, Motorola Razrs and Blackberries, compared to Millennials with Nokia 3310s and Zoomers with iPhones and Androids. Old enough to remember Friends and Buffy, but too young to watch either. Raised on Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, the Star Wars prequels, and Doctor Who. Too young to really understand 9/11, but old enough to remember life was different before it. The early-00s were just a really weird time to grow up. Obviously we saw the tipping point of about a billion different technologies, but culturally the late-90s and early-00s were just a fucking mess. Obviously there's 9/11, but everyone knows about that. We were born just as Girl Power reached its cultural peak, and then just as suddenly, it crashed and burned before we were old enough to enjoy it. We grew up in the backlash, where women were hyper-sexualised and scrutinised to a greater degree than ever before - an environment where we got to watch Lindsay Lohan, Britney Spears, Amy Winehouse, Demi Lovato, Amanda Bynes, Miley Cyrus (and MANY more) each get successively raised onto an impossibly high pedestal, before they got worked so hard, and hounded so aggressively by the press, until they eventually were cracked and broken and made into punchlines. Forget "divorced, beheaded, died...". We grew up with "Rehab, conservatorship, died, rehab, conservatorship, survived". We became teenagers as the Great Recession hit, then graduated high school as Trump and Brexit happened, and then graduated from university into a global pandemic. Millennials were already adults when a lot of those things happened, while true Zoomers don't remember a time before any of them. It feels like we were born right at the crest of about 4 different tidal waves - technological, cultural, economic, and political - watching the Zoomers about to get hit, and the Millennials already getting washed out to sea. Meanwhile the Xers are surfing and the Boomers are drinking champagne on a yacht, both sticking their middle fingers up and yelling "Why don't you just try swimming harder?"....but I'm not bitter. Not at all
I was born in '84, but I remember flipping (or watching my older brother and sister flipping) between MTV and the jukebox channel. I specifically remember when Weird Al was a VJ on MTV and introduced his "Eat It" and 'I'm Fat" videos.
As an Xennial, I can’t choose who’s right. I loved Daria, Celebrity Death Match and TRL *and* most of the 90s NickToons. I got the best of both worlds.
Oh damn, you hit the greats. There were also some Effed up cartoons too like Ren and Stimpy and Courage the Cowardly Dog. I do kinda miss Rocko's Modern life but nothing as much as Daria. Daria is the best!
Thank you for the hardworking memories, ahhh how I miss the 90's, hot car manually wind down the window and drive fast, rewind VHS tapes, waiting for your reservation time when videos came out months ago, when everyone generally got along together even if they had different opinions, time to cranks the time machine.
Are you me?! Lol. Most of my cousins are either a decade older or a decade younger. I just claim Xennial and call it a day. #LiveConfortablyInTheGrey 😅
If you like us, then you know we don't respect you unless you're willing to fight us, at least a little bit. This short is so good because it's true. And both sides did present some good arguments. I think it boils down to what top comment said about being 90's kids vs. owning the '90s. Gen Xers were, at their youngest 11 to 21 in the '90s. That's a whole coming of age period. The older Gen Xers, meanwhile, were young adults and essentially had a brief period of setting the trends of the time. Gen X owns the '90s. Gen X shaped the '90s. but Millennials have some good arguments about being '90s kids.
Older Millennials, like myself, were in our teens in the 90's, so I'd say we have equal claim to that decade as Gen X. I watched BTAS and X-Men after school and Celebrity Deathmatch before bed.
Oh, you're that Gen that's technically between Gen X & Millennials. That's a pretty cool one. Yeah, you got a good mix of 90's childhood and 90's culture . And I like your Handle and Avatar.
@Larry Davis if you were born in 88', you're 100% a Millennial. Technically Millenials include anyone born between 81' and 96'. The confusion lies with older Millennials that claim they are Gen X because they don't want the stigma of being a Millennial. I was born in 84' and a whole bunch of people I grew up with like to claim that they are Gen X, when they very clearly aren't.
@@blackmark2899 Your a millennial any one born between 1981 and 94/96 is Gen Y or millennial. Gen.Y falls into two groups the older leans towards the X and the younger towards the Z not really clicking with each other completely.

Nickelodeon launched in 1995…. So we shall give that to the millennials. MTV on the other hand must be remembered for playing music videos and that had stopped by 95 if not sooner
In 1983, we would have house parties (if your folks were out of town and you had cable) and mute MTV on TV (we were fascinated by the videos, but didn't care so much for the songs) and then play loud party music over it. Def Leppard, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, and then Rush and always, Van Halen! And we had drinks in red Solo cups, even back then. Signed, pre-GenX
Dude I’m so glad you finally addressed this the 90s are generation Xers and thats that. I was 15-25 in the 90s and you all already know those are the best years of your life… yeah the 90s are ours

I don’t understand how Millennials own the 90’s. They were kiddies in the 90’s or just born. Gen X were young teens in the 90’s in middle/high school. Gen X was all up and through 90’s culture. As far as I’m concerned, everything started with us. Gen X all day baby!!!!
Not all of us I turned 23 in 1990, the 80’s was ours. First Generation Gen X and we don’t want the 90’s. In my opinion if you were born after 80 your a millennial and the 90’s is yours.

Batman the animated series is my personal favorite show from the 90’s. That decade is easily the best animated decade of all time
Good animation seems to happen in cycles.
@@Bored_Overthinker what, you mean the generic “robot with gun shoots alien in space” shit?
90s and 2010s had the best animated TV shows
@@king_fresh27 the '90s had barely anything.

@@lilithlaney1759 in essence the "mini" generation you mention grew up in the booming of technology. We literally grew into multiple iterations of vhs, DVD, and digital. @@unfortunateRM 97 here. We're Zillennials. We're the Gameboy Advance SP to the Millennial Gameboy Color and the Zoomer Nintendo DS.
Not at all
I honestly feel like older millennials and younger ones are different. I was born in 1986 so im part of the older millennials

No we’re not. I’m wasn’t a day care entitled brat. I was a latch key kid doing my own thing independently.
You obviously aren't a Gen Xer.
I guess I’m a millennial but I grew up watching Borge gen x and millennial shows. Celebrity death match and daría were my favs. Boy meats world so many good shows
1989 was the last good year. It's been down hill since then.
Yo Daria! Man I had a crush on her friend Jane's Brother. I think Trent? For like. Ever
If you were old enough to retain actual memory of where you were on 9/11, You're a 90's kid.
Most morbid way to settle the debate.
Yeah millennials are 9/11 kids
That stops at 1996 and anything after is Gen Z
@@myrekium9785 Gen Z were born in 21th century not the 90s. Go to my playlist and Community post for more info
Sadly this is true.
@@myrekium9785 For most people, long-term memories start forming when we are 5, so while you're technically correct, I really hope very few kids this young have that kind of memory of 9/11.
I don't give a damn cuz early 2000s kids is where it's at. We had some bangers come out like Kids next door, Billy and Mandy, and Foster's Home for Imaginary friends, not to mention my personal favorite Star Wars the Clone Wars show :)
the 90's is owned by the Xennials FTW
I loved Daria and still have a VHS tape of the visiting college movie
Pff, clearly the 90s belong to us xennials all those things are ours lol
Are you high? 90s belong to us 90s kids. You had the 80s to grow up in.
@@myrekium9785 Agreed 👍
All your base are belong to US x
@@myrekium9785 Only part of the 80s. We were still kids in the 90s too.
@@myrekium9785 I was 7 in 90, plenty of childhood left.
Celebrity deathmatch was awesome. that is one show i wish was still around. just imagine how crazy it would be now. lol
I'm a millenial but my two older siblings were gen x. The 90's is really THEIRS but all of the childhood nostalgia from the 90s is ours. So yes, Nickelodeon and the kids shows. But the music, MTV, all of that was theirs. We were just enjoying it in the background playing with our lite brite and etchasketch.
Anyone remember duckman and The Head? Now that 90s nostalgia.
