This latest mess and doping scandal at the 2022 Olympics just makes me love both Tara and Michelle even more. They both skated to the best of their abilities with no knee bashing nor drug screen failures. And to think Richard Callahan said he didn’t want Tara to even think about winning this. I miss those days 🥺😢😭
A well deserved US Nationals win for the great Tara.
What a joy to see Tara skate 😍😍 well deserved champion
She didn't deserve it.
@@TT-ee4qpYou need to get a life.....Really ???? 26 years ago Tara won and you are still upset Michelle lost.......AT BOTH OLYMPICS !!!!...... Michelle participated in the old scoring rules too ! Have you forgotten that??? Michelle lost fair and square. Why are you so bitter ? Michelle will always be remembered as one of the best US female skaters of all time. She didn't need medals to prove that. Your CRUEL denouncement of Sarah Hughes and Tara Lipinski is disgusting and very rude. They trained and worked hard just like Michelle. Please take your keyboard vomit off these you tube comments. Michelle is an ambassador to Belize..... had a baby and apparently very happy. Sarah Hughes is a lawyer. Tara has HAD her own personal struggles until recently.....( she had a baby) and doesn't need verbal bashing from anti-semitics like you. I love Tara. She is delightful to watch
She is an absolute delight!!! ☺️😊🥰
She became a joke. (∩▽∩) The ISU raised the age limit to 17 NOW, which means Tara Lipinski should go to the kid's Olympics.
Fan C - TT is a racist - she only likes Asian skaters. It's rather pathetic. Tara was a phenomenal skater, but her bubbly personality and megawatt smile made her even more fun to watch!

Hey everyone this is gorgeous
I don’t think MK ever learned to take defeat
What’s so bad about saying she’ll “nail the championship”?
Tara didn't deserve to win because she had no artistry.
Nothing. Crazy Tara-haters on here.

The ISU raised the age limit to 17 NOW, which means Tara and the Russian girls today all should go to the kid's Olympics.
Tara was a great skater with amazing presentation BUT the WORST Lutz....every one is off that clear inside edge! And was never marked down on it!
Kwan was classless not doing the interview. 👎🏻
Michelle was a SORE LOSER ! Glad she didn't win. No manners and no class.
I love watching her because she had such joy and showed it when she skated.
LOVE that roar from the audience when they saw she had won!
Have never been a Lipinski fan but by golly she skated brilliantly and deserved the win! Oh yeah, she certainly did!!!
Tara was a jumping bean, her performance always liked a Disney cartoon........so boring.
@@TT-ee4qp STOP THE KEYBOARD VOMIT GO AWAY
This scoring was a mess. The judges got it so wrong that the crowd was openly booing? Good thing the winner skated well enough to leave no room for doubt. Well done, Tara!
Wow her roller skating background definitely gives her an advantage over the other skaters of her time. Such a cutie!
Go Tara!!! I always loved the joy Tara and Sarah Hughes displayed when skating! Good things happen to good people. Both are class acts. Tara looks great commentating at Sochi too.
ITA!
One thing I noticed about Tara here is that her lutz jumps were actually not flutzed; they were truly off an outside edge (you can clearly see that on the second one at 3:53. I wonder why it changed the next year?
She clearly switched over to the inside edge before takeoff!
I have to admit I was one of those stubbornly pro-Michelle Kwan fans for so long, but more and more as I look back on Tara's performances, she was phenomenal and deserved every win she got. She could have competed with the little stars Elena and Yulia today! I think it's interesting the paths MK career's took versus Tara's - both great in their own way - MK was always 'the diplomat' and is in politics - Tara was more about show business and is still entertaining today - I love her and Johnny Weir - she is so talented! I love her!
I believe Tara is the reason little stars exist at the senior level today. Her career was quite short, but she made an impact. She raised the game. Kwan was my fave in those days and my heart broke for her at Nagano, but without bitterness or anger for a little dynamo who deserved her own chance at glory.
What happened to Michelle was growing up and losing her technical ability at Jumping as she grew more and more she completed her jumps on the ice not in the air. While her artistry improved,This is common in ageing and a lot while her Olympic program was Technically inferior to Tara's who didn't have that ageing factor.I think Tara winning was better for young skaters in the sport giving them hope they can achieve like Tara.Tara also gave us all the Joy of the sport by not being a Diva. But just enjoying skating and with a Ear to Ear Smile.
STEPHEN Nowinsky I agree. Well said
@@stephennowinsky3218 Tara left, because she couldn't stop grow up and it changed everything. Years, Michelle was so stable and gave us so much high quality works, Tara never could do it .
awww her reaction is sooo adorable!!! and GREAT performance!! totally deserving of the title
And you can find the 1997 Skate America competition on UA-cam.
Hard to believe this is the same music Tonya Harding skated to, haha. Slight upgrade here. :) In fact, I think this is a better program than her Olympic one the next year.
This is a MIRACLE CHILD !!! WONDER GIRL!!! SHE ALL EVERYTHING DOED PLAYERS AND ON CHILDREN "TAKE" SUCH COMPLEX JUMPING AND COMBINATIONS !!! IT IS A MASTERPIECE!!!🌹
What is so telling here, in my opinion, is the little word her coach has with her right at the start that makes her laugh and go onto the ice with confidence. Clearly he has the ability to get his young skater into the right frame of mind, as well as treating her in an age-appropriate way. Great to see.
+fantastischfish I don't see that in the video. What are you talking about?
+Matt G. A few seconds into the video, she goes over to her coach. He has a quick word with her; she smiles and off she goes to do a great performance. Excellent coaching and relationship.

ok, thx
young and fearless-a winning combination
The event judging was terrible. Kwan was ridiculously gifted, deserved 4th in the long program at best.
I think it's a bit odd to criticize Kwan for being upset after her free skate disaster, considering it was truly her first meltdown ever on the ice at a senior event. And let's remember, Kwan wasn't 23 at the time, she was a teenager (16), so give her a break. When Tara skated at the 96 Worlds and bombed the short, she admitted in a recent interview that she ran to the locker room and cried hysterically and was inconsolable. It's normal. But b/c Kwan did it, you must criticize it of course.
Matthew C Sh*t! I experienced like Tara something very similar after a great program and still don't know how that happened and why. Teenager things i guess, catharsis. People can be very rough judging athletes, i wouldn't do that as a fan. People don't know what they've been through
I think she's one of the most artistically gifted skaters of all time! But I think people criticize Kwan because she'd already won both Nationals and Worlds once, and they/we/I are accustomed to competitors that "suck it up" when things don't go their way. Her 1996 year was one that people dream of - she'd won just about everything she entered, but a year later she's inconsolable at being second, despite her being an automatic qualifier to Worlds. It does seem to me that the VERY FEW losses that Kwan had, she seemed to be almost unable to put on a brave face. Sure, she wanted to win. So did everyone else! It just LOOKS like she can't handle not being first in everything all the time. Maybe I'm wrong, but it just feels like she gives off that "sore loser" vibe more than anyone else at the time.
My bad, I meant 1998 Nationals.
The crowd was booing Michelle moved ahead of Nicole. While Michelle was grossly overmarked for her long program skate, I think alot of these fans arent very knowledgable as they seem to forget there are 2 programs. Nicole did still beat Michelle in the long even with her gross overmarking, but she was too far back after the short to have any chance to pass her (even if Kwan had been marked properly).
💯
where are the ordinals. Did anyone have Kwan in first
I don't think so... and Nicole was 2nd in the free. But pretty sure Kwan was 2nd overall with every judge.
How did Kwan end up in second with three falls? Do they not deduct for falls on non-obligatory jumps?
She actually finished third in the free but second overall (she won the short program).
@@matthough3590 Yes Nicole bombed the short and was 6th coming in. Angela should have been 2nd in the free skate which would have jumped her to 2nd overall. Nicole would finish 4th overall with her 3rd in free skating, and Kwan 3rd overall with her 4th in free skating. Although I guess you could make a case for Nicole 2nd in the long over Angela, in which case Michelle still finishes 2nd even with only 4th in the long, and Nicole still 3rd.
@@robdurdain5912 I would go with your scoring: Tara-1st in long, Angela-2nd, Nicole-3rd, Michelle-4th. Might have been interesting to see what Angela would have done at Worlds in 1997.
@@matthough3590 Yes, Angela would perennialy be underrated in the U.S. Even after she had a huge artistic improvement to go with her rock solid technical abilities, she had virtually no shot at the 2002 team even had she skated perfectly. Of course she did herself no favors by making errors at crucial times in the future. Since for whatever reason it was clear the USFSA were not vested in her she had to take every opportunity to force them to notice her and didn't do that.
The short program matters
Scores?
Bezic was wrong. The music was from Much Ado about Nothing.
It was from both.
People are ridiculous! lol, Michelle was disappointed and she handled it with class. She even said you have to learn defeat to get on the podium...well, take that haters, she won the next 8 in a row, lolol
Well, she took the Gold medal home for 8 straight years but won? Hardly.
The lol in your comment is so appropriate....Michelle Kwan: Legendary Olympic Loser...when she had to actually compete she didn't do so well now did she? The Olympic judges gave her all the help they possibly could but see, the other skaters were used to competition....to having to earn their marks....to throwing caution to the wind and going for it...they didn't have the advantages Kwan had. She made off with Sasha's bronze in SLC....the judges threw her a pity bone...and boy does she brag about her two 'lympic medals...she has no class...watch her in SLC....look at how she treated Frank and Lori...and 2006 should really ring a bell even the most fervent Kwan fans could hear...
lol, everything in your post is wrong, crazy, and ridiculous.
lol, yeah while fallin on her ass all the time...sure...
@@locomadre3520 I heard so much rave about Kwan. When i started to watch figure skating I would always find myself saying I dont get why Michelle is such a star and favorite. I didnt watch her when she started seniors, but over the years she never moved me.
Sasha Cohen ways bombed over pressure, but she moved me when she skated.
I like her 1997 programs much more than her 1998 programs. This program had maturity and was fun. In 1998 it seemed she was trying to be something she wasn't...Both Michelle and Nicole landed 4 triples. Michelle really wasn't overmarked.
Nikidinov and Corwin landed more triples than both Michelle and Nicole. While it isnt just about jumps the long program results should have been:
1. Lipinski
2. Nikidinov
3. Bobek
4. Kwan or Corwin
Nikidinov would have come 2nd overall under these long program results and deservedly so. Bobek and Kwan were both overmarked comparatively, especialy Kwan. Kwan would have been 3rd overall even with a 4th or 5th in the long program.
Who is Shelly? Never even heard of her.
At 1:43, Dick Button must've been psychic to say that. Or he must really know his stuff :) I jut love this performance.
Were people booing her at the beginning?! 😨
I don’t think so
They were booing the scoring of Kwan that had just been announced because Kwan scored higher than Bobek which she didn't deserve.
@@gregklein7640 Tara should go to the kid's Olympics . Tara had a kid's body and weight so easier to jump, nothing more.
@@gregklein7640 Tara skated like a happy puppy running in the park....(≧ω≦)/
if you look closely her edge changes to an inside right before the jump, it looks like an outside edge but an easily made mistake :)
And they never marked her down on it!
Also the judge who actually marked Tara behind Michelle should be banned from skating for life. I hope to hear she was if anyone knows.
Absolutely ridiculous judging.
:)
She is sooooo cute
Oh yeah....Kwan is really classy...even the audience booed and then since she didn't get the Gold she was all upset and wouldn't be interviewed...of course when the stage was all hers and she didn't have to contend with Tara and Nicole then she allowed herself to be interviewed....I don't know why people think of Kwan as classy after all she has pulled throughout her lllllllllllllooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnng 'career'....I take great comfort in knowing that unless a 'new' rule is made and the powers that be make an exception and give her Olympic Gold while she rests on her couches..that Michelle Kwan will NEVER wear Olympic Gold!!! Love Tara Lipinski...youngest National, World, and Olympic Champion ever and she earned every single moment in the spotlight and sun that she gets....what a wonderful awesome night for Tara....
loco madre a lot classier than YOU Could EVER hope to be!
loco madre She was classy as hell on the podiums (podia?) at Nagano and SLC
Tara was overrated and Michelle was robbed. Tara had a kid's body and weight so easier to jump, nothing more. Tara retired because she couldn't stop grow up and everything changed. Michelle's artistry and technique were better than Tara . Michelle finished no lower than 3rd place between 1995~2004, Tara just retired because she's not a kid anymore. Michelle's performance was classic, beautiful and womanly. Tara's performance just like a kid.
@@michaelgarceau4813 Tara should go to the kid's Olympics.
@TribleButz OK, I hadn't, thanks. I still don't see what she had to collect herself for except for not winning. I LOVE Michelle's skating, but she is so unpleasant to watch when she doesn't win something.
@cheaklist,
These are facts. Nice try on attempting to call me a bad loser though. Didn't work. As for Tara skating cleanly at 1997 Nationals, she wouldn't have won. Michelle was brilliant from a technical and artistic point of view. Tara is not known for her artistry. She's known for her JUMPS. She wasn't close to being a well rounded skater like Michelle was. Skating is a blend of athleticism and artistry and Tara is athletic. NOT artistic.
If Tara is not very good and not even a competitor to your idol why did you come all the way here and tried so hard to defend your idol for the events occurring almost 20 years ago? A fan boy is a fan boy who can not handle the truth that tara is the youngest skater to win the Nationals and the Olympics for single event and is the person who kept Michelle from getting 1998 olympic gold.
I don't need to defend Michelle Kwan. Her legacy speaks for itself.
Then why are you here for? Making so many defending comments? You didn't even realise you were contradicting yourself. Feel sooty for you....
+cheakist Love Lapinski - great joy in her skating!!
cheakist Sooty? What does that mean????
This is when she peaked. By next year she could barely h8it her triple flip. It's probably why she quit after the Olympics. She wasn't getting any better.
Not true. She got much better. Most people "retire" after winning an Olympic gold medal. She continued to skate professionally for about 4 years and continued to do triple jumps, although not the 3Loop/3Loop which damaged her hip.
@@elizabethhurley1129 nah. The following year she was struggling with the triple flip that she was doing when she was 12. Nothing about her skating improved ex for for the triple triple combo she barely landed.
@@elizabethhurley1129 Tara grew up and everything changed.
@@snopesshop1903 Bless your clueless, hate-filled heart.
@@elizabethhurley1129 Excuse me? Are you actually Tara's mom?
@Edna Red,
Let's face it: if Michelle skated cleanly, Tara would NOT have won Olympic gold, a world title or a US title.
you can assume as many ifs as you like. The fact is Tara won Olympic gold, a world and us title.
I dont have to assume. Look at 98 Nationals, 1997 Skate America. We both know Tara wouldn't have won any competition she entered in with Michelle, especially when Michelle skated a clean SP and LP. Tara is known for her jumps. Nothing else because her artistry is inferior to Michelle's.
1998 Olympics michelle did skate cleanly and still did not get gold. 1998 nationals tara didn't skate cleanly. 1did not watch 1997 skate America so no comment. Your rule could have appled to michelle: if Tara skates cleanly, michelle would NOt have won 1998 nationals. But it is pointless coz it is not fact. Don't be a bad loser
Michelle would have won Nationals because she is a balance between athleticism and artistry, whereas Tara is only known for her jumps. I give Tara credit for attempting triple/triple combos, however she is not a legend and never will be.
Michelle didnt skate cleanly. She had to hang on to the landing of the triple flip. Plus, her Olympic performance wasnt even close to the freedom, speed and attack that she displayed at Nationals.
Tara is the youngest National Champion ever..enough said.
Will you please STFU!
And World and... Olympic Champion. ^;^

Tara had to be the youngest one , she had no choice. A kid's body and weight help she could make 3+3, when Tara grow up, she couldn't win the Olympics gold.
Explanations and tears @ 97 Nationals, 97 Worlds, 98, 02 Olympics. Take a cue from Yamaguchi after she lost 90 and 91 nationals, praising the winner and watching with smiling approval of Trenary and Harding's long programs on camera, but then again Yamaguchis and Hughes display of sportsmanship is a rarity. POOR SPORTSMANSHIP on Michelle Kwan’s part. Declining the post championship interview. That was the inclination of a poor loser. I so absolutely love Tara Lipinski, she’s so UNDERRATED and people seem to forget that she’s OLYMPIC CHAMPION. I wished I knew what Nicole Bobeck was doing these days. She had the talent to achieve greatness, but personal demons plagued her career
Michelle kwan never give up and kept top for more than 10 years with great sportsmanship. Tara was the poor sportsmanship one , after won the Olympics Tara retired because she grew up. Tara had a kid's body and weight so easier to jump, nothing more.
Tara didn't really make a correct 3+3, more and more people thought Tara shouldn't be the winner. Actually, Michelle's artistry and technique were better than Tara, Michelle's performance was classic, beautiful and womanly. Tara's performance just like a kid.
She did it later, when she stopped crying. She was 15.
Tara was way better than Michelle Kwan ever was.
Michelle's artistry and technique were better than Tara. That's why Tara retired. Tara won the 1998 Olympics gold just with good lucky, because more and more people thought Tara didn't make a correct 3+3 .
