    I have no sympathy for Canada for not having someone to qualify to worlds after how they treated Chounard. She could have easily finished top ten at 96 and at these worlds.

    • @alexsdb9712
      @alexsdb9712 6 місяців тому

      It's a fact. And the truth and sense is that Chouinard was ranked third in the world in 96, as the Grand Prix/Championship Series is basically the best of the best, and her making the Grand Prix finals and finishing third. It was inexcusable for the Canadian figure skating federation to not even consider Josée's entire season, and how no one in the Canadian ladies field was even close to her, maybe Susan Humphreys the closest at that point.

      And so many people at the time thought she was a whimp.

      Besides Susan Humphreys' health, what's tragic and an injustice is how Canada had no ladies figure skating entrant at the 98 Olympics, because the truth is, it's now with IOC and is beyond the ISU and the World's. Susan did skate and completed the short program fair and square. This alone should have given Canada one spot in the ladies field at the 98 Olympics. That should have been a medical bye situation, as there are even people who are given medical byes even without skating at all. The other factor is what others have discussed - the root of it all being that Canada's skating federation didn't send Josee to World's 96. She would have most likely finished top 10, which would have given two spots at World's 97, and possibly Josee staying in the amateurs and going for the 98 Olympics.

    I know if Slutskaya was 2nd in the long it would have given Kwan the win but if Irina herself wins the long does she win the gold now? Or is it Kwan, or still Lipinski even with only 3rd place in the long now?

    • @ohioweatherguy
      @ohioweatherguy 2 роки тому +3

      If Irina had won the free skate, Lipinski would have still won the gold, Slutskaya would end up with the silver, and Kwan with the bronze. The factored placements would have been:
      1) Lipinski: (1SP=0.5)+(3LP=3.0)= 3.5,
      2) Slutskaya: (6SP=3.0)+(1LP=1.0)= 4.0,
      3) Kwan: (4SP=2.0)+(2LP=2.0)= 4.0
      (Slutskaya wins the tie breaker over Kwan by placing higher in the long program)

    • @matthewpargeter-villarreal3538
      @matthewpargeter-villarreal3538 2 роки тому

      To win gold, Kwan would have needed to win the FS (which she did) and have Lipinski finish no higher than 4th (similar to what happened when she won in 2000)

      Unfortunately, Michelle Kwan grew up during 97 ~98 , her body changed and she tried to find a new balance.......Or she could skated better.

      Tara was lucky, she was a kid, with a kid's body and weight .

    I think there was a lot of criticism at the time that Susan went to worlds. SHe knew she had an injury and we know she wanted to go to worlds but her decision cost Canada a spot at the olympics. It is tough because the chance of goin to worlds is a huge honour and rare. She knew darn well she could be knocked out by one of about three Canadian ladies at the time. I know Susan has a huge faith in God - one wonders how she would truly explain her decisions/conduct? At least they didn't have the rules that had skaters fined if they hid an injury.

    • @heavenlyjoy8218
      @heavenlyjoy8218  3 роки тому

      Susan's injury happened at Worlds, not before and she didn't hide it. You have so many of the facts wrong here.

    • @skaterboy-cz9wj
      @skaterboy-cz9wj 3 роки тому

      @@heavenlyjoy8218 That's what I read. Didn't Susan have another chance to qualify Canada a spot later and that sadly failed? Regardless Susan has had a successful transition in life it would appear. A time when Canada was quite strong in top 10 type ladies from Lisa Sargent Driscoll to Josee Chouinard to Karen Preston and Susan.

    • @heavenlyjoy8218
      @heavenlyjoy8218  3 роки тому

      @@skaterboy-cz9wj Susan was fine when she went to 1997 Worlds - if you watch the video, it's actually covered on there. She had a blister on her foot and it got infected while she was at Worlds. She never hid it from anyone. Canada had another shot to qualify another skater and they chose to send Susan. She came originally came within three spots and enough skaters withdrew that they were ultimately within one spot, although due to Canada Olympic Association criteria, they wouldn't have sent anyone anyway.

      In those days, artistry was the deciding mark in the FS. Even though Lipinski had a much more technically difficult FS, she was still 14 and couldn’t compete with Michelle artistically. She still couldn’t in Nagano IMHO, but the judges couldn’t ignore a programme with two triple-triple combinations

    • @TT-ee4qp
      @TT-ee4qp 3 місяці тому

      @@Dylvente
      Actually, Michelle had better artistry and technique than Tara.
      Unfortunately, Michelle grew up during 97 ~ 98, her body changed and she tried to find a new balance.
      And Michelle got hurt ( her toes ) before the 98 Olympics , so she couldn't make triple triple combo there.
      Lucky Tara was a kid with a kid's body and weight, made her triple triple combo easier.

    • @rolandgreen7484
      @rolandgreen7484 3 місяці тому

      Tara was given the higher technical marks and Michelle the higher artistic. That about makes sense. And why it was close between them (and Irina who also skated very well).

    Tara Lipinski’s routine consists of jumps and some hand flailing followed by more jumps and some more hand flailing. She’s a great jumper but she lacks grace, beauty, artistry. and emotion. Likely due to age but she could have learned so much from Sasha cohen tho Sasha came after her

    • @elizabethhurley1129

      @nmelgar74 9 місяців тому +1

      @@elizabethhurley1129 I don’t have an issue with her winning. I actually liked her. It’s just that when you compare her artistry to others you can see that she lacks it though she has great jumps. I have always thought that judges score higher for jumps than artistry which I think takes away from the sport. Same thing happens in gymnastics and I think the sport loses beauty cuz of that

    • @canyoubelieve2167
      @canyoubelieve2167 8 місяців тому +4

      But the one thing Tara did have was the “it“ factor. I don’t think anyone’s going to disagree with you that she wasn’t the most artistic skater. I loved her though. I loved her joy and her nerves of steel.

    • @nmelgar74
      @nmelgar74 8 місяців тому +2

      I agree with that too. I think she developed more artistry as she got older and did really well on the stars on ice shows. I wasn’t talking about her performances as a whole. Just about this one performance. I liked her too and enjoyed her later performances

      The two programs Sandra Bezic did for her that year were absolutely perfect for where Tara was at that age, really took her skating up a notch, and cleverly hid her weaknesses.
