    For today's guitar lesson we will take a look at "Time In A Bottle" by Jim Croce.
    Originally released in 1972 but then re-issued as a single after his tragic death in a plane crash in 1973, "Time In A Bottle" went on to become a No.1 hit.
    In this Time In A Bottle guitar lesson I will show you the complete song in it's entirety minus the lead guitar part that is played along with the rhythm guitar parts taught in this lesson.
    What I wanted to teach in this lesson is basically Jim Croce's parts, or the ones he would play live.
    The entire song is fingerpicked and can be quite intricate. However, if you follow along with the lesson slowly, you will notice fingerpicking patterns start to emerge. I will point them out when we get to them.
    Memorizing these patterns will speed up the amount of time it will take you to memorize Time In A Bottle drastically.
    As with most songs, I suggest you play everything at a slow to moderate tempo before raising it up to full speed. This will insure that you play all of those intricate fingerpicking passages cleanly.
    OK.. Good Luck!!
    Carl..

    FYI at 1:55. The 4th (pinky) drops from the 4th fret to the third. If you switch the 3rd and 4th fingers as you transition to the new chord you will lose the second string D (3rd finger). If you listen closely on the recording you will notice that there is no abrupt change or loss of sustaining D on the second string. Overall, great job!

    • @PrimeRsoul
      @PrimeRsoul 9 років тому +56

      accioahobbit If your hands are really too small, you will probably run into this problem more often.
      Rather than buying a smaller guitar, where the frets are placed closer together, you could tune all your strings down (to drop-D for example, or even lower). Now all notes you need to play are located around an area where the frets are narrower. Place a capo on the fret that allows you to comfortably use your pink, while making sure your guitar is still tuned properly for the song.
      It's not the most beautiful solution, but it does offer a solution. Just needs you to think outside your box of wishes. Once you're comfortable with playing the song, try tuning the string up one step, and see how your pinky feels about it. Good luck.

    • @davidlayton5054
      @davidlayton5054 9 років тому +35

      accioahobbit I doubt your hands are too small. This is a difficult shape. I struggled with it until someone showed me how.
      First make a Dm shape. Place your thumb behind your ring finger (which is quite far down). Push the neck of the guitar out so far that the neck is pointed away from you like your guitar grandpa's shotgun. Now reach with your pinky to fourth fret by bringing your elbow toward the guitar.
      From here it will still take some practice but should no longer feel painful and too awkward.

    • @ktwiatt3189
      @ktwiatt3189 9 років тому +3

      +accioahobbit If you were to capo it up the frets would get smaller and you'd be able to reach. My fingers are too long to get most bar chords right.

      Yeah… I’m still wondering if Maury actually played those stretches and Jim played the middle D minor section without the minor 3rd throughout the verses. You never know in the studio and Maury seemed like it didn’t matter who got credit. There’s a lot going on - a lot of notes weaving in and around - there’s even a harpsichord in the mix. It’s a shame they never got to play it live (that I know of)
