Once again, man, you blow me away... I've loved, and been haunted by this song, since the first time I heard it... I don't know if I can EVER play it THAT well, but by God's grace, he's given us a talent like YOU to have a chance to watch someone else do it, and teach us.... THANK YOU, from all of us, that feel the same way about the guitar, as you...
Right you are Andy, about it being 'the 70's, and it wasn't about perfection...' the 'vibe' on a special performance or take was MUCH more important to a great number of recording artists than having to (or WANTING to) go back and change, or 'punch in' any overdubs...back in the day when the band or artist would all be in the same room at the same time playing together on the recording...what a concept!...THAT'S the magic of the studio recording...at least, it used to be...it means something completely different in today's recording sessions, where anybody with a laptop and ProTools can record 'perfection' and professional-sounding results... Dude, another WONDERFUL instructional video...your playing, performance, and delivery are such a pleasure to follow...thank you.....
Best tutorial I have ever seen on this song. Pro level playing too. I've been playing for YEARS, and just had a kid, so my acoustic is seeing more playing than ever. Really appreciate this video as this is a song I've always wanted to be able to play, and now I can!
I am determined to learn this wonderful song, the pinky on the 4th fret is a right awkward devil!! How Andy hasn’t got a million subscribers is beyond me, his song choice is second to none. Trouble is he makes everything look so easy.....
Just got my first guitar ( lifelong dream..I'm 70! ) I've just been trying to figure out exactly what my first song to aim for and HERE IT IS!!! Thank you for doing it!! If I dont ever play anything else- this is the one- loved it when it first came out! And never stopped.
From all the thousands of songs I´ve heard during my life, 70´s songs are the most expressive and artistic. Something happened along the way after those years that transformed music into dollar bills... forgetting ... art. Thanks S&P for this lovely lesson.
I’m not much of a player these days but I really enjoy watching/listening to you play. I love the history and tutorial. Great choice of a song. Thank you!
BY FAR the best guitar tutor on the web! I exclusively learn all songs from you now unless you don't teach a particular song I'm interested in learning.
You just learned to play it and when you played one note you heard that "there's something wrong with that"? It sounded great to me when you played it wrong. If I had a nickle for every time I played and I said "that sounded wrong" I could retire you. Great job from a song I remember as a kid. You're the best. Glad for all of us I can't retire you! But donations to that end are on their way. Thanks as always for sharing your expertise.
I love how you point out that it was the 70's and perfection was not stressed.. it was about the vibe👍 I love that. So stoked I found your channel. Thank you for putting together such exquisite videos! Aloha 🤙🤙
Thank you SO MUCH FOR THE TIP with the wrist, I was struggling so hard to figure out how in the world I was gonna get my pinky to run that bass line and you changed my life, lol.
Hey! I love that y covered both guitars! One can find some tutorials on guitar nb.1 but I did not manage to come upon second guitar tutorial thus far. Big thumbs up!
Thanks Jaye. I put a huge amount of time and effort into making these videos. I like to keep them free for all of those that just can't afford to pay, but if you're getting something from them and have the means please support what I do. Cheers, Andy www.shutupandplay.ca/donate.html
This is a real challenge for the untrained who have been playing for years and a perfect example of a tune that requires learning a variety of techniques. The wrist placement is key to the opening, but most of us never play in that position. The finger picking, while not overly complicated on its own, requires a lot of concentration as the licks move. Then we have a strange fingerings of common chords to accommodate descending bass lines that can't be done otherwise I'm going to have to play this 500 times just to get it to sound crappy. What a great job you did on this. In fact, all of your stuff is top notch. Wow.
So I'm way behind where I should be at playing guitar. I figured since it's my 48 birthday I'll just start over with this song because it was recorded the year I was born. I'm going to practice for 3 to four hours a day. I'm going to mix in some Troy Stetina books so I can go over some basics again and work on my rhythm. Fall down seven times with guitar stand up eight times with guitar. Support Andy and buy a coffee mug, I did and my coffee tastes so much better now.
YOU'RE THE BEST!! I thought it would never happen or it take forever when I left a comment asking if you could do this song, but it wasn't long at all. Thanks so much for this.
One of my favorite songs of a lifetime !. Thank you for including it and teaching it in a great way, as always !. It is a delight to hear and see how you play the guitar.
I hate that I'm missing my pinky on my chording hand. Especially, when I see a video like this. I always have to figure out a compromise. I've always loved Croce. What an absolute tragedy. 😥
I love your videos! A brief note on the History of this song...There was a Made-For-TV film entitled "She Lives" and it aired on ABC : Sept. 12, 1973. That's when the Nation had it's very first wide exposure to the song "Time In A Bottle". I was in High School at the time and that's where I first heard the song (as did my friends) and we were bowled over by it....an instant classic. I went right out and bought the LP "You Don't Mess Around With Jim" because it had yet to be released as a tie-in single (...it was released as a 45 in November of that year); and then, literally a week after "She Lives" aired, Jim and Maury perished in a plane crash...that was, and remains still, a huge tragedy....So, just before Jim and Maury died, this song was being played on the radio all over the Country....Here's an outtake from a documentary where Tommy West makes reference to this History of the song "Time In A Bottle"(and the ABC TV movie, though he doesn't name it as I've done here...): ua-cam.com/video/OJcvvEhQcpg/v-deo.html Hope this was of some interest to you! I know, Boomer History, right?
Thank you for another excellent, well-videoed, and well-recorded tutorial! Your explanations are very helpful, and thanks to you, I eliminated mistakes I’d been making for decades, and can now play this song correctly.
8:10 He says that Jim Croce miffed a chord on the first verse in the recording; not necessarily so, just keep in mind what Chet Atkins used to say, “All mistakes are intentional”
Andy you are a phenomenol guitarist, brilliant fingering patterns it will be a real challenge to learn this, also a beautiful sounding Taylor guitar always liked the Taylor sound keep up the brilliant work.
I remember reading somewhere that shortly before the tragic crash that took Jim and Maurey from us, Jim had been meeting with a then unknown Jimmy Buffet and they were planning on touring together or collaborating on something, I wish I could remember what it was. It would have been interesting.
An outstanding music lesson video!!! I enjoyed learning Part 1 of the song!!! Interesting variations in the song. Some beautiful chord patterns. Thanks!
A brilliant lesson as usual, especially as both guitar parts are covered. I would say however it makes no sense to use your thumb on the G string on the verse I would just keep using your index (pointer/first) finger on the G string as it is for the rest of the song. This also helps with the 'extra note'
If I could save time in a bottle The first thing that I'd like to do Is to save everyday 'til eternity passes away Just to spend it with you And if I could make days last forever And if words could make wishes come true We'd walk through the fields of ripening corn And time would flow through us and you And I'd save everyday like a treasure and then Again and again I'd spend them with you And I've looked around enough to know You're the one I wanna go through time with (ooh-ooh) Through time with (ooh-ooh) Through time with If I had a box just for wishes And dreams that had never come true The box would be empty except for the memory Of how they were answered by you So if only I could save time in a bottle The first thing that I'd like to do Is to save everyday 'til eternity passes away Just to spend them with you And I'd save everyday like a treasure and then Again and again I'd spend them with you (spend them with you) I've looked around enough to know You're the one I wanna go through time with (ooh-ooh) Through time with (ooh-ooh) Through time with

Just did. You are truly a blessing!!!

I don't know who could ever dislike this. The song and the lesson are unassailable.
one of the best guitar tutorials i've ever watched on youtube. you are a fantastic teacher. thanks so much!
Mesmerizing. I think you've outdone yourself this time--who hasn't wanted to learn this song? Absolutely beautirul.
Best tutorial I have ever seen on this song. Pro level playing too. I've been playing for YEARS, and just had a kid, so my acoustic is seeing more playing than ever. Really appreciate this video as this is a song I've always wanted to be able to play, and now I can!
You have by far the best guitar lessons on youtube, thank you so much.......it will now take me until eternity passes away to learn this....lol
Great Job! He was such an underrated guitarist. And to sing and play that stuff at the same time? Crazy..
I am determined to learn this wonderful song, the pinky on the 4th fret is a right awkward devil!!
How Andy hasn’t got a million subscribers is beyond me, his song choice is second to none.
Trouble is he makes everything look so easy.....

Thank you for this! I've been playing this for years, purely by ear, and have never got the embellishments right. This is a keeper!
From all the thousands of songs I´ve heard during my life, 70´s songs are the most expressive and artistic. Something happened along the way after those years that transformed music into dollar bills... forgetting ... art. Thanks S&P for this lovely lesson.

BY FAR the best guitar tutor on the web! I exclusively learn all songs from you now unless you don't teach a particular song I'm interested in learning.
I've been playing for about 50 yrs but this one would be too hard for me. Andy makes it sound beautiful !
When I search for a lesson on a song, if I see there is one from you (or in this case two!), I know that will be all I need. Many thanks!
Good work splitting out the two parts. I always tried to play pieces of both as a solo act, but never really knew either part correctly lol.
I love that you separated the parts in stereo, it's a friggin' eargasm!
The way you explain things is just brilliant. Thanks for spending the time and for putting it up here.
Thanks my friend again and again from Ireland u are a treasure 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🎸🎸🎸🎸brian
one of the best guitar tutorial pages out there... respect, and thank you.

Ask and you shall receive, thanks for making these tutorials you've made learning guitar much more enjoyable!
Great playing as usual ! Jim was a top notch guitarist, but adding to it he sang while playing this!!!! Beyond amazing he could do that!!!
The ad I watched was a guitar ad and the guitarist was playing this song! Lol

You are a brilliant teacher, all your tutoring is absolutely first class thank very much for going through this kind thanks
I love this song and i love that the guitar parts can stand on their own even if without jims beautiful and sincere singing
Please make “I’ll have to tell you I love you in a song”! Both parts!
That is pure heaven. may he see this comment and bless us all with a ill have to say i love you in a song tutorial. Amen.
Hey! I love that y covered both guitars! One can find some tutorials on guitar nb.1 but I did not manage to come upon second guitar tutorial thus far. Big thumbs up!

Your Theory is impeccable - Great Teaching Style = Great Video Lesson, Thank You Sir!

Oh man, more Jim Croce please, very nice lesson thank you
I’ve been waiting for a good tutorial on this song, and this is perfect! I’ve been waiting for this for a long time! Thank you so much.
Absolutely brilliant. My search for a lesson for this song ended here 👏👏👏

YOU'RE THE BEST!! I thought it would never happen or it take forever when I left a comment asking if you could do this song, but it wasn't long at all. Thanks so much for this.
Is there any way that you could explain the picking at 15:18 in a little bit more depth?
How wonderful it must be to be able to play like that. Thank you from those who try to emulate.
If I can only play the first 10 seconds of this I'll be happy.
your tutorials are really the best dude. help me understand these songs in a way i couldnt before
\
One of my favorite songs of a lifetime !. Thank you for including it and teaching it in a great way, as always !. It is a delight to hear and see how you play the guitar.
I love how the simplified version is just as hard as the complex
I hate that I'm missing my pinky on my chording hand. Especially, when I see a video like this. I always have to figure out a compromise. I've always loved Croce. What an absolute tragedy. 😥
Man that sucks, but stick to playing man
Where there’s a will there’s a way brother, keep up the effort.
I cant relate directly. However, my pinky is too short for the stretch 😂 keep it up you'll do great.
Kyle s i found a way to play the main lead guitar without a pinky without missing a note. if u want i can record a demo for u guys
Doesn't Django play without using his pinky as well? 🤔
This is the second time I decide to learn a song and you put a lesson on that song that day. Great lesson as always

Woah..you just blew my mind...have to learn this for sure...and it forces you to hold the guitar properly :D
Thank you for another excellent, well-videoed, and well-recorded tutorial! Your explanations are very helpful, and thanks to you, I eliminated mistakes I’d been making for decades, and can now play this song correctly.
Super vid as always & got the tab to help the channel. Many thanks.
I requested this so long ago and now it’s here. Worth the wait thank you so much!

Wonderful job. Thanks so much for the heads up and the link to the article on Mix.
Best tutorial ever!!!
Bless you , Andy … you are the man.
I’m glad I found this channel!

Man what a brilliant piece of music. Love it! Love it! Love it!
You’re just plain amazing!!!!
Not really, but thank you. Cheers, Andy.
Jeez man this is difficult. Really good playing love your vids.
Love this kind of tutorials! Thanks a lot.
You are an exceptional instructor. Can you PLEASE give a guitar lesson tutorial on Operator by Jim Croce.
Thank you!
If I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save everyday 'til eternity passes away
Just to spend it with you
And if I could make days last forever
And if words could make wishes come true
We'd walk through the fields of ripening corn
And time would flow through us and you
And I'd save everyday like a treasure and then
Again and again I'd spend them with you
And I've looked around enough to know
You're the one I wanna go through time with (ooh-ooh)
Through time with (ooh-ooh)
Through time with
If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true
The box would be empty except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you
So if only I could save time in a bottle
The first thing that I'd like to do
Is to save everyday 'til eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you
And I'd save everyday like a treasure and then
Again and again I'd spend them with you (spend them with you)
I've looked around enough to know
You're the one I wanna go through time with (ooh-ooh)
Through time with (ooh-ooh)
Through time with
Brilliant I love this song I started to learn it 25 years ago and didn’t get far but I’m gonna have another go thanks
Your invisible man style is amazing
Beautifully played Demo!
I love this song so much 😊 Thank you for such a wonderful performance and the tutorial!❤
Could you do “I got a name” by Jim Croce I am struggling with other lessons and yours a just perfect
BEAUTIFUL!! Wonderful lesson AS ALWAYS!!
Once again...brilliant choice of song and also finding interesting background on the song and it's composers....bravo! I really enjoyed this one a lot...thank you for your dedication to giving attention to the details on technique and the multi-guitar sections and blending that makes these songs so beautiful and lasting in our memories. I remember when the song came out I did buy the single and practically wore out the record...playing over and over to get the fingerpicking and dual guitar parts just right...brings back really good memories too...and also the sadness I felt when this talented artist's career and life got tragically cut so short. The article you found was especially interesting from a guitarist POV... thank you for that too!
Superb explanation and so crisp and pure playing Andy !
You’re amazing man
I’d suggest the chorus key change or modulation is to D mixolydian where the G is so prominent
The run down to ending with the G5, D9/F# - Emin7 is amongst my favorite parts transitioning back to the D major rundown again (or back to the intro after the 2nd cycle)
The modulation creates the D9 (open high E), the Dsus (open G and high E), thenE min 7. The G is a G5 since there’s no third but the songs complex enough let alone start talking about theory
I know you know all this and just saw no need to bring any of it up but the point is I would suggest the foundation of these changes and progressions are all a result of Maurys influence . I would guess Jim came up with the initial idea and basic building blocks of the song and Maury escalated it to a whole different level
Maury seemed to be such a humble easy going peaceful guy ... he didn’t seem to mind being in the background and let Jim have 100% of the spotlight
Of course with Jim’s voice how could you not ... but seems to me people of today are much more about themself and not the whole being greater than the sum of the parts attitude
Oh well I digress .. awesome awesome job 👏 👏 👏 👍🏻👍🏻
Ok, so, really well done mate! 'Been playing quite a while and was looking for a teacher for players with experience. So many sites try to be something for everybody; cant be done. Folks starting out need to get the basics before jumping into stronger tides. I got the right hand for this and needed a good view of the left. Taking Maury Mulheisen's on is just the best. Haven't subscribed but a few times so yours is at the top...
It would be amazing to have a tab to guide me in addition with your hands, but still the best tutorial I found of this song
I love this song.
Thanks for doing this great song and for the link to the article which was terrific as well. I was a freshman at Villanova when this single broke so the article dredged up all sorts of memories. Who knows what Jim Croce would have gone on to do.
So much great content! I’m a beginner all over again at 58. I’d like to pick a song to begin learning in addition to re-learning chords, picking, etc. Is there a particular song on your channel that you feel would be good to start with? I like the idea of learning classic songs instead of nursery rhythms! Thanks!
wow - what an awesome channel !!!!! why have i not seen this before ?!?!?!?!?
🎵 For more information on this lesson, for part 2 and the TAB: www.shutupandplay.ca/time-in-a-bottle--acoustic.html
Always so cool lesson, thank you Cat Steven
Congrats!!! Amazing class, please try with *A long time ago*. Thank you very much
Another great breakdown of a fairly technical arrangement. Thank you once again! :)
Thanks! Always loved this song.
Some parts go to fast, something with b4, a4 and b4, but I only have 1 b-string 9n my guitar
Could you do 'Wichita Lineman' by Glen Campbell?
Have always loved this song and I can now say I can play it thanks so much off to learn Maurys part
One of my all-time favorite songs thank you so much!
Still on 6:15 on this lesson this sure is hard 😅
Excellent rendition. I'm struggling to create a decent solo version, but this helped tremendously.
The intro riff is so beautiful
Wow oh man how beautiful!! Thank you!! (Always reminds me of...Chim chiminy chim chim chiree😍)
