Great comment and lovely approach. Like you say, it's a beautiful journey first and foremost. Even with the "basics" one can find inspiration, connection, and create some great stuff. It's sad when self doubt/criticism or ego take away from the relationship between a person and their instrument. There is nothing lacking or missing unless we tell ourselves there is (and that's not to say there isn't room to explore and try new things).
You're not just a UA-camr. You're a screenwriter, filmmaker, and a cinematographer. Nice job, Weird-accent-guy. Edit: Guys please stop, he literally called himself that did y'all even watch the video?
Wow, for me it's the opposit, I always learned without a pick, my brain tangles when I grab one. So does that mean I'm in the new dimension and going backwards and becoming a beginner again? lol 🤣
This video format is genius, because no matter where you are in your acoustic guitar journey it likely catches up to you and goes from describing your past to providing suggestions for the future. So most beginners and intermediates can be included somehow.
Paul is so much better than I’ll ever be, but to be honest, I don’t want to ever learn too much blues or jazz sounds because it doesn’t do much for me musically, I just dig more modern sounding chords. The simpler stuff with more Major diatonic tonality is what grabs me. I kinda just dig punk rock the best I guess. But I did just order a small acoustic because sometimes I don’t want to deal with cables and electronics when just doing fingering exercises. I figure I’ll detect small mistakes better than when practicing on an unplugged electric.
Yes, it's great....you can spot exactly "where" you are and then see the next levels. I loved Paul's 'chord' video too....building up basic chords into magical sounding shapes and figures
Seeing it laid out in these stages made me feel a lot less overwhelmed to pick up the guitar again! So much to learn, but this was reassuring and a reminder that we don't have to jump in and try and learn everything at once. Thank you!!
I tried to learn decades ago, long before there was UA-cam. Everyone else around me taught themselves, were not advanced, and had zero teaching skills. The average learner gets bogged down or discouraged attempting to learn advanced things because everyone else tells you that’s ‘playing guitar.’ I’m thinking about getting a guitar again.
Yep. I’ve subscribed to a number of instructors over the last 8 years, & this is the first I’ve actually been inspired to attempt to pick up the guitar.
Just keep playing keep picking your going to realize things and before you know it your playing things that you want to turn into songs. Even when it’s just a small peace if you keep playing it and experiment with it you will say ohh that sounds amazing! When I was a young kid my brother would kill it. I started when I was 6 on a harmony acoustic and by the time I was 16 I was passed him now I’m 29 and my brother won’t even play with me.. sad to say but he didn’t put in the practice. And he feels as if he should just put his guitar down. His Les Paul has been locked in a case for 4 years now hasn’t seen the light of day in 4 years.. my poor brother.
@@amirkharrat9189 well maybe you could start with listening to blues. Then learning a few songs get inspired by different artists and find your own style. The best place to start is by listening to BB King. Just an opinion. :) All the best fellow musician

Been playing for over 50 years, all self taught. It was a joy watching this video and seeing 80% of my own playing come across in your playing. I never felt accomplished but now realize that anyone who stays with it will eventually discover all the stuff you have just laid out. Good job, I’ll be watching more of you. Thanks
I realised these stuff too somehow by myself, like playing a chord pattern way up the fret board. About 30 yrs been playing..thats a long time and i'm still so clumsy on the guitar, oh my
I felt the same. I can't do all of this stuff, but I can do most of it pretty well. It's reassuring to see that represented as significant progress. Because, while you're doing it, you're always comparing yourself unfavourably to the next level. Young folks are in a great position to skip a lot of frustrating road blocks with the learning resources now available.
@@thecaveofthedead Same here. I never felt good enough really. 50 years or back n forth practicing sometimes and sometimes not, or even playing for that matter. Until just recently at a family dinner this past Christmas, my brother was talking about how good he though I was on guitar. I looked up at him and said "Who me". I was shocked. Still don't take the time to play much yet. Work and life get's in the way, but I still pick it up a few times a week for 15 min. to an hour. Hope to play more when I retire. I'm sure I will.
And then you realize some 21 year old Indonesian has already surpassed this video by 10 more levels. Josephine Alexandra. She can play rhythm, lead, percussion, and vocals--all at the same time. ua-cam.com/video/b0LkG52V-lI/v-deo.html
You can always become good on your own but with teacher it's faster and you can correct mistakes from the beginning. But Its always fun to learn things as a foreigner👍
Paul is a super talent. Not only is he a fabulous guitarist, he has that rare ability to impart his knowledge in a wonderfully accessible and engaging manner. Josh Turner rates this guy. That’s some endorsement!
This is the kind of instructing I need. I practice scales till I'm blue and then go back to playing the same lifeless stuff. Following along with you here shows how to bring something to life. Great job Paul
This is incredibly accurate! As a 29 year old who now makes a living playing traditional country songs (mostly in bars, mostly solo shows) this is almost exactly how my guitar progression went over the last 20 years. Love your videos Paul!
@@shahir1395not sure if you’re good yet but you start as slow as you need to over a single chord to properly hit all notes. Also watch a video on proper right hand position. Ramp up speed till you’re a pro. It’s really that easy
Can I just point out that Paul has mastered the guitar and is able to demonstrate what he is talking about, while talking about, while it took me a year to learn how to play and sing at the same time
This about made my eyes water up. I recorded an albums-worth of my old songs a couple years ago then after nearly 20 years of playing I just stopped. I had this burst of creative energy after recording and wrote about 30 songs in a couple months and then imploded. I’ve barely played in 2 years. Watching him basically recount my formative years reminded me of the intense joy and thrills I had each time I broke another plateau. I put my guitar back out within reach a few days ago but still haven’t touched it but I think this little stroll down memory lane might break the ice. What a great and *accurate* video!
@@888kaddy Great idea I was kinda doing that when it bottomed out. Can’t believe this comment is 5 months old. I’m still not back on it. Couple days ago, I brought it back out into the living room so it could stare me down. Not really working. I worked out a lot of trauma on these guitars. Apparently the stinking thing is trigging my ptsd. Now that I think about it, when I started therapy a couple years ago is about the same time I stopped playing. A lot of my songs are old enough now that I myself somewhat have gotten lost in the metaphors. But facing all this crap brought back what all those songs represented in the day. Anyone ever experienced anything like that with an instrument? I sure would like to pick him up again. I have a bunch of lyrics now with no music. Hey thanks everyone 👍🏼
I have gone back to basics working on rhythm, learning the right chords vs forcing the ones I know and doodling and then feeling stuck. Also bought a new acoustic guitar as a show of commitment. It feels good to show myself this matters to me!
i am 15 years old, live in germany and play the guitar for more than 6 years now. I started with classical, then continued with electric guitar (as a great fan of RHCP). A few months ago i bought an accoustic and I love playing this fingerstyle blues stuff. I am about at stage 12 now and wanted to thank you for your videos! You taught me a lot of things like playing under the bridge „the right way“ and my first blues song: nobody knows you when youre down and out.
Frusciante is an amazing player to learn from! Such a broad catalogue of different feelings, yet always has that Frusciante sound to it. I believe in you to continue playing and improving. Keep playing because you love to and not to impress other people -- I made this mistake as a young guy around your age and it killed my progress in a lot of different ways.
That just changed my life. Ive been stuck in a rut for like 2 years just learning songs but never understood what i was playing and i think you just showed me that i can love playing again.
This is probably why you do not have the capability [capobility XD] to do so.. :D but he definitely deserves to featured or beatured on guitarist's magazine along with Justin Johnson
Want to a take a moment to shout out all the kids that started out with the piano and are already familiar with some basic musical concepts, that struggle with impostor syndrome, yet are still here. We got a long way to go but every step brings us closer to our goals.
Oh... I never thought about my lack of confidence with my playing as impostor syndrome, but on hindsight it totally was. I'm getting better though, so I'm more confident now
Always remember that the stronger your imposter syndrome the higher your potential. If you weren't being called to something you wouldn't care enough to question it. And know that if the call is strong it's no use resisting: contentment will elude you until you surrender and get to work. The soon you accept this the better.
haha omg that´s so me... i ´ve played the piano for like 14 years by now and picked up learning guitar like a year ago. In my opinion piano is a lot easier to learn/play than guitar and I feel soo bad because my guitar skills are still not that good. I mean I can play open chords and bar chords, a little bit of blues stuff and can more or less play some scales but that´s it and it´s already been a year. I feel like I should play much better by now but yeah still... But I hope I will reach my guitar goals any time soon haha

This is a roadmap. Your ability to break things into levels is spot on.I went on a similar acoustic path, although I was lead guitar in the band playing acoustic on the unplugged nights. ended up studying classical, getting into Michael Hedges and fingerstyle steel string, jazz and folk. There are many paths on the acoustic,
Steve...also work on vocals....masterful guitar playing is awesome, but you have sing to hold a crowd. I dont play anywhere near as good as I should based on how long I have played, but I practice singing everytime I drive. I will never claim to be a great vocalist, but I have been hired, and hired back again.....it is never my guitar playing that seals the deal. It is competent vocals along with the guitar. It also helps that I have 120+ songs commited to memory. All styles, pop, rock, folk, country. Cheers
@@joeshmoe7967 yeah, i dont think practice is a problem, i got my first guitar this xmas and have been playing and singing for between 40mins and an hour and a half every day without fail since then. When the singing is bad (which you can witness for yourself over on my channel - Ive been recording my progress) it is usually because i am choosing songs which are out of my limited range (or at the moment hayfever!) because they are great to play. I have considered singing lessons but at the end of the day its just for fun for me, i am not planning to do anything professionally or anything and my youtube vids, which probably come across as a vanity project are more for confidence really should i ever feel crazy enough to do an open mic :D
You nailed the progression of the guitar perfectly. I could specifically remember each of my own discoveries as you went through. Amazing and fun video thank you.
I think i must be doing something wrong? I played lots of bass guitar in highschool, but that was like uhhh Jazz style. The teacher didn't know I was essentially strumming out my own improv parts. My father gave me both my old bass and an acoustic and i want to play certain things so I just keep fingering out individual notes. I don't really know any chords. I don't even know what the names of the strings are. I can kinda tune out some differences that make good melodies but they're always single-note.
What a beautiful, passionate and inspirational video. I'm a campfire guitarist "pro", so at stage 2 and this video just showed me home much I cannot play and do. Two weeks ago I started learning my first fingerstyle song, having a hard time but don't want give up and afterwards I really want to dedicate myself to become better in general, to be able to play around and jam and experiment in general, not just with one song. Thanks man! Wanna learn that Travis picking you mentioned as well
I purchased your acoustic guitar course. Im so impressed. Just what I was looking for. Your instruction is so thorough and covers in detail all the subtleties of each lesson. Thanks for putting this course together. It is extensive and gives me so much to practice and learn while improving my skills.
I've never lost the pick I started playing with. I've lost so many over the years, but the one I started with is still around and it goes with me everywhere I go
one of my favorite sounds in the world will always be the sound of fingertips brushing against the guitar strings. This video wasn't only true and entertaining, it was so sweet and nostalgic, even though it was my first time watching it. It took me through all the stages of my self-taught journey, and though I am at work right now, I can't wait to get home and pick up my Ibanez :)
Just the other day I was in a real rut on guitar. Ive been playing inconsistently for 5 years and feel like my progress is as slow as can be. This video really helped me realize I knew more than I thought. It's just great the way you laid this out in stages. Makes me feel a little better about my playing thanks for organizing it all!! Your the best!!
I just started playing guitar and although Paul is motivating, I am confronted by the thought that I don't have enough years of life left in me to achieve such greatness.
I'm 63 and I've been lost on the same plane for 50 years of guitar playing. Suddenly in the last 6 months I've found that I progressed so much and developed both in theory and muscle ability. Don't give up...CB
i have been playing for 3 years and i do all of this stuff on my own, you start trying things out and you stumble and start playing good after a while, the guitar saved my life
Paul, you are inspirational, multi-faceted as to the different styles of music, and were born to teach (and, of course, play) the guitar. I remember your video of the day you quit your job, the spring in your step, the excitement in your voice, and the sense of freedom that you conveyed. It took real courage for you to do that, but you boldly went for it. It sets an example for all of us to follow our dream. I am not surprised you have so many subscribers (including me, as of today).
Watching videos like this makes me realize just how many gaps I have in my guitar learning journey. Sure, I can do the rhythmic slaps in the last step almost perfectly, but I feel like I don't even have the campfire pro level mastered yet. Paul also has such an amazing feel for the instrument and I've had that feel when playing piano but am yet to get it down on guitar.
Bro... it's absolutely ridiculous how 100% accurate you are in nailing my EXACT road to learning to play. In 13 mins you went through my exact path that has taken me (thus far) about 18 years. I've played shows since I was 15 and played everything from punk (still my favorite to play on stage) to blues, country, rock and now jazz. Thank you for all the years of making amazing videos! I always love getting an alert about a new upload from you.
I have recently got started in an acoustic duo and I have learnt that being the only guitarist (and without a band) that there is absolutely nowhere to hide any mistakes. So as a consequence my playing has become cleaner and more accurate over the past few months (I also play in a rock band too). I got up to about number 10 on your list as far as being able to play those techniques, and even some of the later components too but with a little less confidence. Lol I have also discovered being the only guitarist in our duo, I need to learn to fill the songs out a bit in certain songs so I am learning to play chords and lead lines together, which is more about what you were talking about in your later points. I have a new appreciation for the skill level required to play acoustic guitar cleanly and confidently and it is also improving my electric guitar playing along the way. This is a great video for explaining the different levels of acoustic playing and I hope I can one day share some video of my playing with everyone. 😃🙏🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Paul, ever since I stumbled upon your UA-cam videos, I've been filled with hope to dust off my guitar, my long-forgotten favorite instrument. After six years of neglect, I'm now making an effort to reconnect with it and explore new musical horizons with an open mind. That's why I decided to purchase your Acoustic Adventure course, and I must say, it's fantastic! I also have your Next Level Playing course, which is equally impressive. Congratulations on creating such great content!
Thank you. I was actually at the Impostor stage. I don't know what to do next. It felt like did I really know anything? Did I really play a guitar? Everything felt so wierd that I am stuck whether what do I do to improve more. But, after watching this it helped me gain focused again that I lost along the way. Once again thank you Sir Paul Davids.

I loved it when you said that everyone's path will be different, so true! I see people all the time arbitrarily saying that it's best to start out on acoustic guitar, not if all they want to learn how to play is metal!
Honestly this is exactly what I have been looking for. Only playing chords and tabs can really be limiting when it comes to learning the guitar and it just does not feel as good as improvising and playing all over the neck. Hopefully this will help me to better grasp the fundamentals needed to play freely all over the neck.
And all that in 13 minutes....from talented progressive performance to film making, acting, be funny and entertaining. Men you rock and getting better and better. I want to grow old like you (and I am already 57...).
I started playing about 25years ago. Living in the desert, no phone,no tv, I would practice some nights for 6 hours straight. 24 years later frustrated that STILL couldn't play a song lol.. I got my fingers working quite well though. This year, I made it my goal to learn a song finally lol... I have been practising relentlessly and even wake during the night and pick up my guitar . All that practice for years and hours on end is paying off :) Every time I pick up the guitar, I am making breakthroughs with my playing. So happy as I never gave up and finally getting my rewards. It's been a loooonnnnggg....journey but so worth it. My motto , never give up :) You are a brilliant teacher and look forward to learning as much as I can from you. TY:)

What you give for free is unbelievable. I cannot imagine how great your courses are! I will be buying an acoustic and your courses.
16. You decide to try classical guitar and discover you've been holding the guitar wrong since you were a child, but at least now you can finally play an F chord without a problem. You also learn that almost nothing you've ever learned applies to the classical repertoire, so you're pretty much starting over. 😭 That is a gorgeous guitar, by the way.

I signed up for this one, just this morning and after this I might try the Next Level Playing. The video quality amazing and lessons are well done. Go for it !
This pretty much describes my journey as a self taught guitar player! The only thing I would add is alternate tunings (open d, open g, etc...) it's amazing how exploring those will broaden and deepen your guitar universe!
I took a few lessons as a little kid and I’ve wanted to pick it back up recently and you have shown me so much and inspired me to learn more thank you so much

This video format is genius, because no matter where you are in your acoustic guitar journey it likely catches up to you and goes from describing your past to providing suggestions for the future. So most beginners and intermediates can be included somehow.
I play fingerstyle •_• , but I agree the video is cool
I very proud of you.
Thank you!!
take it at your own pace! learning acoustic is amazing because it's raw and fully you, what you play is what you hear
I tried to learn decades ago, long before there was UA-cam. Everyone else around me taught themselves, were not advanced, and had zero teaching skills. The average learner gets bogged down or discouraged attempting to learn advanced things because everyone else tells you that’s ‘playing guitar.’
I’m thinking about getting a guitar again.
he's very good
This actually made me feel kinda overwhelmed and disappointed with how little I’ve come in the span of 9 years, but I’ll get to work
This is probably the greatest add for playing guitar ever
Yep. I’ve subscribed to a number of instructors over the last 8 years, & this is the first I’ve actually been inspired to attempt to pick up the guitar.
@@sunshine3914 how did picking up the guitar go?

Pick it back up! Don't feel pressure to go overboard and record stuff... Just play what comes to you and enjoy!
Screw around with tunings or even partial capo stuff. You'll be hooked in no time.
I can relate. I have done something similar. Now I am trying to come back with the purpose of improving vs just playing what I know.

The soon you accept this the better.

i taught my self the guitar and he literally named each and every stage i went through and that too in a chronological order its freaky af
To me the first few steps were dead on too but then I noticed that after a certain point, by paul's description at least I skipped to a few steps ahead, went back & picked up some remaining stuff multiple times :D
For example I'm still not that into getting that good at playing multiple lines at once so I skipped on it a bit but, that's because I want to play certain stuff on different instruments. I'll probably get a bass and a keyboard or a bow instrument too eventually.

Lol
I have also discovered being the only guitarist in our duo, I need to learn to fill the songs out a bit in certain songs so I am learning to play chords and lead lines together, which is more about what you were talking about in your later points.
I have a new appreciation for the skill level required to play acoustic guitar cleanly and confidently and it is also improving my electric guitar playing along the way.
This is a great video for explaining the different levels of acoustic playing and I hope I can one day share some video of my playing with everyone.

The Next Level Playing course (which I used to concentrate on electric guitar improvement) was a real game changer for me and I can see this new course being just as good. My acoustic skills definitely need some work and I have a feeling this'll be the place to do it.
I took a few lessons as a little kid and I’ve wanted to pick it back up recently and you have shown me so much and inspired me to learn more thank you so much
At the beginning I was like “alright I got this kind of things” then it slowly became a “wtf how”
So, music if your major, too, then...? Lol.
Don Music character from Sesame Street is our daily life. (*bashes head on keyboard*)
😂
His teaching style is totally unique with full of humour sense !!! Loved it ❤
I used to play - with - a guitar.
You are teaching me to actually play the guitar. Your love shows so well and is very contagious. Thank You
I couldn’t wait to get the email this morning. Signed up immediately. One lesson in, I’m in heaven! 😃👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Aw man. I'm pandemic pinched, but definitely want to explore lessons and online seems the most convenient given the times... plus this guy really seems like he'd be an excellent teacher, he's clearly very well rounded as a player and he's got me second guessing my entirely hetero sexual identity on occasion. Might have to find a way, 200 bean is a good deal if it provides good structure and aids adherence to a proper practice regimen. I'd really appreciate if you commented again further along the way, but if not then best of luck along the way!
Rocky Evans It’s an awesome deal in my opinion. Everything Paul puts out is high quality, super inspiring, well explained, and fun to learn. You should definitely make the investment, if you enjoy the acoustic guitar. You’ll love this adventure-go for it! :)
@@Gerdisan have you purchased something before, or are you referring to his online vids? I definitely enjoy what I've seen on UA-cam from the disappointingly tall guitarist, his knowledge is mixed nicely with humor, I will have to investigate further. Just curious as to what to expect from the program, I'm certainly eager to learn and evolve and more than willing to put in the work, just don't want to waste more time putting in the inefficient, unguided work I'm currently doing lol
@I McLeod thanks for the tip, I'll have a look there as well. Agree with your string selection, elixir is my favorite for acoustic for sure!
Was the price in USD? I think i’m about to buy but the currency isn’t clear
The more you learn the more you understand how infinite this universe called music is ❤️
This is, without doubt, one of the best acoustic guitar fingerpicking videos I’ve seen. Thank you 🙂
I’ve been practicing day in and day out. It’s all I think about. As soon as I think I’ve made some progress I realize I have so much more to learn. I think it’s finally time for me to just accept that I’ll never be able to do your accent, no matter how hard I try.
Brilliant. That's the best progression of skills I've ever seen. Brilliant
I love the way Paul constructs these video. It's an excellent teaching technique while making it so much fun. Thanks Paul.
Am learning via Learn Practice Play currently. About half way through. Really excited about the new course.
Dear brother, I've been adventuring on the acoustic guitar for decades, just slowly developing my own strange finger style approach, and low and behold, all this super cool stuff recently fell into place for me in a very new and fun way. Always knowing where I am and what I'm actually doing. Your videos are an excellent validation for all that I've intuitively learned, finally falling together for me.
