    Mastodon fuckin rules, best discography in metal the last 2 decades Imo. FYI the lead singer on this song is Brann Dailor who is their drummer, guy is a god tier musician. Mastodon deserves all the love so anyone reacting to any mastodon is a major positive.

    Mastodon isn't young by any means, they've been around for over twenty years now. But they keep getting better, and it's one of the few bands I know of where the fan base actually likes that they experiment with new things and expand their influences and styles.

    I am super impressed you have moved on to Mastodon...they are an insanely talented prog metal band that I think you will enjoy. It's a bit of a different listening experience...I think it's best enjoyed when you focus on the entire band as one giant piece of music...hope you liked them!

    Mastodon started becoming big in like... 2004-2005, but I think the 2009 album Crack the Skye was when they broke through to a different level.
    Anyway, The Motherload is probably their catchiest song, The Czar or The Last Baron are probably their most epic songs, March of the Fire Ants or Blood & Thunder are two of their heaviest songs, Sultan's Curse is my favorite song at the moment. All good stuff 👍

      Oh, also there's an acoustic version of Teardrinker that's really cool.

    • @PaulGuy
      @PaulGuy Рік тому +2

      Yeah, there's a big change from Blood Mountain to Crack the Skye. It's when they started to embrace melody and long-form songwriting more. The best part is the chops are still there, but it's not 100%, 100% of the time. They've learned to breathe, and that adds so much nuance.

    The members of Mastodon are in their late 40's now... this is their latest record 'Hushed & grim' in 2021. 3 of 4 members of Mastodon sing lead for the band - Troy Sanders (bass), Brann Dailor (drums) and Brent Hinds (guitar)... only Bill Kelliher (guitar) does not sing vocals.
    The band was formed in the late 90's in Georgia, USA... Mastodon is a very raw, heavy band w/ the heaviness of Black Sabbath... the darkness of Alice In Chains... and the grit & grime of Eyehategod... interesting combo - southern flavored sludge metal.
    Mastodon were an indie band that started releasing songs and EP's by the early 2000's... it was their first full album 'Remission' that was released in 2002, followed by the 'Leviathan' album (based on the novel 'Moby Dick') in 2004 that got them touring w/ Slayer and building a following.
    Major label interest got Mastodon signed to a major label in 2006 for the album 'Blood mountain', an album that has sold over 150K copies... it was followed by the album 'Crack the Skye' (2009) that scored a big single 'Oblivion' on MTV; it charted at #11 in the US and has sold over 200K copies... The band had gotten more melodic w/ 3 vocalists giving their music layers of sound that increased their popularity.
    Mastodon has continued to release successful albums and tour constantly as a headline act... they released 'The Hunter' (2011)... "One more 'round the Sun" (2014)... 'Emperor of Sand' (2017)... Their latest 'Hushed & grim' (2021) is a double CD that charted at #20 in the US, #14 in the UK, #10 in Germany...

    Mastodon are one of the most important but weirdly overlooked bands of the last 20 years, think pink floyd meets stoner rock! Amazing talents! 3 of the 4 band members sing, this was the drummer on this track, in my opinion he has the best voice!
    Unlike many other bands, mastodon get better with age..and that statement was considering how awesome they were in the early days!
    Loved your reaction to it!

    Welcome to the world of Mastodon! I suggest you watch the videos for "Pushing the Tides" and "More Than I Could Chew" (both from the their most recent album, Hushed & Grim, the same one this song is from), then proceed backwards to hear their catalogue. Can't go wrong with them.
    By the way, Brann Dailor (drummer, main singer in this song) really has a 70s vibe to his voice, but you can also hear Troy Sanders (bass) doing the harsher vocals here. Brent Hinds (lead guitar) also sings lead vocals for the band (with a more Ozzy Osbourne meets southern music approach).
