Mastodon are an American heavy metal band from Atlanta, Georgia. Formed in 2000, the band's lineup of Troy Sanders, Brent Hinds, Bill Kelliher and Brann Dailor has remained the same since 2001. Mastodon has released eight studio albums, as well as a number of other releases.

Art is a cyclical beast. The same can easily be said of Grammy Award nominated hard rock juggernaut Mastodon. The group’s four members recognize the importance of life’s omnipresent cycles on their sixth full-length album, Once More ‘Round the Sun. The band orbits around themes of loss and rebirth, twirling a sonic spiral of its signature robust riffing, hypnotically haunting soundscapes, triage of dynamic voices, and thundering seismic grooves.
At the same time, this particular collection proves personal for Brann Dailor, Brent Hinds, Bill Kelliher, and Troy Sanders. The very title says something slightly different for each member.

Glad you guys enjoyed it! Mastodon used to be a little more "traditional" metal when they first started in the early 2000's, but they became more experimental as time went on until becoming their current mix of prog/psychedelic/heavy metal. In some of their older stuff, guitarist Brent Hinds (red-haired guy with the face tattoo) would use hybrid picking and banjo rolls (since he originally played banjo) to create crazy bluegrass-inspired sections in the middle of some songs. Also, at 6:50, it's actually a bass! It's run through something like a light fuzz pedal and he uses a pitch bender like a Whammy pedal I think. Troy Sanders (bassist, guy with the long gray beard) also does the harsh vocals on this song. Fun fact: he is currently the bassist for Thin Lizzy (granted they've had enough members over the years to populate a small town) who were one of his inspirations. And a mastodon is (was) a big furry elephant native primarily to North America. Humans lived alongside them a 10,000+ years ago, but probably played a hand in their extinction because we hunted them. There are skeletons on display in a few natural history museums around the U.S. (I've seen one of the skeletons up close before, the tusks were enormous and unreal). It's crazy to think those creatures were potentially lurking in my yard tens of thousands of years ago.

iv heard of mastodon for over a decade now and iv always thought exactly what you said! I thought by their name they were a screamo band like gojira but when i heard more than i could chew and curl the burl and i was hooked a few months back

Thank you so much for opening up the rabbit hole...that is Mastodon. What a brilliant band...What a brilliant lastest album and track..I have loved them since the first album Remission was released 2002. It was more sludgy with gruff vocals. I can understand why you would say prog...their albums always have a theme or concept to follow..and the music has become more progressive . The second album was called Leviathan which is all about Moby Dick...a track to check out is Blood and Thunder.
Some other tracks to check out from various albums are.: Motherboard, Oblivion, Curl The Burl.
I could go on and on🤣🤣🤣.

Love Mastodon. Normally their music is way heavier but always very interesting, inteligent and progressive. Check out their other amazing songs like Ember City, Steambreather or their heavier side for example Hears Alive from their masterpiece album Leviathan. Greetings from Poland 💯💥

their first few albums were 100% heavy metal with growling vocals, but they've always had a bit of prog metal to them. "once more around the sun" was a really break through album for their prog style. absolutely worth the listen if you haven't yet. Opeth is another band that had deep black metal roots and made a transition to prog metal, taking a journey through their releases can be a wild ride.

Mastodon fuckin rules, this is very straightforward from them tho. Highly recommend checking out one of their epics like “hearts alive”, that’s from back when they’re were a lot heavier and used a lot of harsh vocals. Another great one with imo their best solo and some of their best lyrics and riffs is “roots remain”, masterpiece song. They actually have 3 lead singers the drummer Brann Dailor being the lead singer on this song with a little of singing from the bassist troy sanders, the lead guitarist does Brent hinds does lead vocals too, one of the things that makes them very unique. Anyway good stuff guys all mastodon rules, they’ve got the best discography in metal since 02.

I can see 2 future Mastodon fans in this video. I must say I was surprised when Dad said he'd never checked them out while wearing a DT t-shirt. Not exactly in the same genre for sure but still similar enough.

I only discovered Mastodon when looking for new music and finding Hushed and Grim which I bought immediately it’s great
